Stage 1 Navigation by Rock was a challenging start to the race being at altitude and in the blistering cold and windy weather the night before.  Beautiful scenery soon melted the initial shock of heading out into the cold morning.  Stunning canyons and beautiful mountain landscape made the day pass quickly!

Stage 2 Slot Canyons was as advertised.  Many river crossings in icy cold water, followed by a tunnel passage and climb to a stunning ridge top. The descent down the san dune from the top of the ridge top was a truly memorable experience.  When do we ever have the unique opportunity to run down a long steep sand dune!!

Stage 3 made for unique challenges that ended up halting the race at several checkpoints due to a significant sand storm that resulted in course markings disappearing and challenges with sand blasting you as you navigated the course.  Due to an unfortunate fall during from Camp 1-CP1, I ended up well behind where I had anticipated.  As I reached CP3 having navigated the course without any course markings, the decision was made to have competitors remain at checkpoints until the sand storm dissipated. The ultimate decision was made to end the stage with competitors at their CPs and evacuate camp to an evacuation shelter.  Now we await the decision as to how to proceed with the final stages.

The end is near in sight and I am looking forward to the greatly anticipated (or dreaded) long march……

This race has been a long time in the waiting. Since 2020 when I first embarked on the journey and decided to race the Atacama Crossing!  I am excited to meet everyone in San Pedro in a few weeks and make new acquaintances in this journey across the desert!
