A new adventure, and as always, a mix of excitement and nerves. It will be the closest stage race I've ever done to home, just a plane ride away and just over two hours away.
This summer, with the high temperatures, there are days when training has been a huge mental and physical effort. Despite the fact that having this extreme heat and humidity will help me get more acclimated to what we might find there, I know it will help me get there. And the few days off I have from work, I have no choice but to take advantage of them thinking about Greece.
I tolerate the heat very well, but it's still been difficult. I'm a sea person, and the combination of how bad it is in these temperatures, combined with having to skip a day at the beach, has made it difficult on some days.
Even if you're not an elite athlete, any athlete has to give up things to reach the starting line or participate in a competition.
The important thing is that it's always worth it. That's why, in my case, I need to truly want to compete in a race; otherwise, with all the years I've been competing, I wouldn't be able to handle everything it entails.
Of course, to make up for it, I've also treated myself to a few good days at the beach ;) Being mentally fit for a race is more than necessary.
