The Last Desert (2014) blog posts from Janine Canham

09 November 2014 10:12 am (GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi

Very happy to report that we have completed our running and are now back on the ship for the 2 ½ day trip back to Tierra del Fuego – plus another 2 days of travel time to get to Hong Kong.

Winds of 50 knots prevented us from running yesterday and the captain did his best to find us a sheltered island – but to no avail. So after about 36 hours of sailing around, we finally managed to get ashore today for our last run.

This was a 3km loop. The courses are short for safety and environmental reasons. But it’s a complete mind @@@@ running loops for 7 hours or so.  It was pretty windy on today’s course, again with deep snow. It was beautiful but we are now all exhausted and happy to be heading home.

I will be spending 30 hours in Buenos Aires on the way home, which my Dad arranged for me, since he used to live there. So I am really excited about that. The adventure is not over yet…. Thanks Dad!

Looking back on the week, it has been an incredible once in a lifetime experience.  The landscape is phenomenal and the wildlife has been almost within touching distance. Penguins have the right of way on the course, and thought nothing of waddling up to us. I was really nervous and apprehensive about this event and cannot believe I have just completed an ultramarathon in Antarctica and survived…! An emotional experience.

Big hugs Josh and Sam – I will be home on Friday.  Miss you lots xxxx

Literally and figuratively.  Day 3 and I was brave enough to shed some layers, which meant I was able to move faster – which worked amazingly well. So I am going out in a thong tomorrow…

Wish I had tried that sooner, as I was 2nd placed woman yesterday! And jumped lots of places up to 44th overall after my mediocre first day of shivering.  But I can’t complain as that is what these endurance races are all about: working out clothing, nutrition, pain, mindset etc…. Felt really great and ran hard and REALLY enjoyed it as a result.  Huge difference from the misery of Day 1. Conquered my fear of extreme cold and learnt from my mistakes (and from lack of training in cold climates) and just flew.  Sod’s law but the weather today has been so terrible with winds of 50 knots, so today’s racing was cancelled.  Just as I am finally warming up …!!!!

The course yesterday resembled a red piste in a ski resort. We had to zigzag up a steep mountain, over the top and slalom back down. In knee deep snow.  Beautiful icy blue icebergs and penguins. Just beautiful! I had such a great day.

Alison, the North Face 100 course has been perfect training in terms of putting in the hours for very few Kms!

Having a lot of fun on the ship, especially with Belinda and Ryan who are great company.  The ship is crashing around in the waves right now and we seem to be one of the few not struck by seasickness today, and eating everyone’s share of the buffet.  That’s what I call Relentless Ingenuity!

We are now heading for King George Island where we hope the weather will be good enough tomorrow for our last and longest day.

Thanks to everyone for the lovely messages! Again huge thanks to Natalia for the loan of the ice ultra gear J. And thanks to everyone for the donations to Room to Read. x

Today was just out of this world. We raced on an island populated by thousands of penguins. It was just incredible. The course was really tough: 2km loops on a steep hill, but the view was spectacular from all sides. I learnt from my mistakes yesterday and did a better job with clothing and nutrition so had a more enjoyable experience.

There is a well kept secret that noone tells you about a running an ultra: the running is the easy bit !

I am about to commence my journey of endurance:

1 hour from home to airport

2 hours in Hong Kong airport

17 hours from Hong Kong to New York

3 hours in JFK airport

13 hours from New York to Buenos Aires

4 hours in Pistarini airport

4 hours to Ushuaia

48 hours buffer in Ushusaia (in case miss any of above connections)

2 1/2 days by ship across the Drake Passage

Zodiac from ship to shore

250kms run is beginning to look appealing

What does a girl pack for a trip to Antarctica? The mandatory kit list is a shopaholic's dream. It runs to 12 pages of A4 and will earn you a lot of airmiles on your Visa card. Unless you are a closet fan of Shades of Grey, you are unlikely to have the equipment in your closet, some of which would not look out of place in Christian Grey's Red Room!!! The neoprene balaclava with tiny slits had my dogs running out of the room yelping in terror when I tried it on. The kahtoola snow spikes resemble an instrument of torture and will probably get me arrested at airport security. If you are picturing Agent Provocateur, think instead Abominable Snowman. Even my layers have layers. I am now proficient in the many different thicknesses of merino, down and caprilene. I will be waddling around the course behind the penguins. I owe a big thank you to all those kind friends who were generous enough to lend me kit for my race, thereby saving me endless hours of retail torture: Natalia, Alison, Simon & Candice. Huge thanks especially to the lovely Natalia Watkins for the loan of all her super technical cold weather kit - which she wore in the Arctic while towing a sled and sleeping on the ground.... Christian Grey, now that's hardcore! I have however packed a few 'fashion' items, proving running is not just for nerds. I have a gorgeous pair of AMO technical sunglasses with polarised lenses. And lots of ultra cool (or rather lovely & warm) technical 2XU clothes: thermal compression tights, sub-Zero running gloves, micro climate fleece, etc. Let's hope these clothes fit me as I have not had a chance to wear any of them, living as I do in a hot and humid climate. Running 101: Never try anything new on race day. Oops.
