Equipment

The Last Desert is the only multi-stage race across Antarctica and requires some specialised gear and clothing. Competitors must bring 48 mandatory equipment items for the entire week. You may bring additional items, but you cannot bring fewer than the required minimum.

Review the Equipment List carefully to ensure you have every mandatory item in the correct quantity. The list includes detailed descriptions, photos, and recommended makes and models.

Mandatory Equipment will be checked during Competitor Check‑In on the ship as we sail through the calm waters of the Beagle Channel before reaching the Drake Passage. Missing items may result in time penalties or being unable to start or continue the race.

An equipment list will be provided each day indicating which items must be carried in your backpack (this list rarely changes each day). A 25–32L pack is recommended, and you should aim to keep the total weight under 10kg / 22lbs.

Some items can be purchased through the RacingThePlanet Store or Expedition Foods. Competitors receive a discount (email us for the code), but please note that shipping is not available to all countries.
