Hi Everyone,
Well here we are Friday 26th. Well rested and getting “cabin fever” This is our third day on the high seas and a bit of a anti climax after being so occupied, mentally and physically for the last 10 days.
As I said yesterday, I am so blown away by the amount of friends who emailed me and my amazing family who literally kept me going during the entire trip. With those good wishes, stories, jokes and prayers, there was no way I could not finish.
At last we can see land as we leave the infamous Drake Passage and head in to the calmer waters of the Beagle Channel. In about two hours we are due to see both the picture and the dvd show of the race, followed by the prize giving ceremony. Then after that a meal. I think we will actually dock in Ushuaia late tonight, stay on board, in the morning, breakfast, then it’s disembark. I fly from Ushuaia to Buenos Aires tomorrow, stay overnight, then fly B.A. to London Heathrow and then back to Cork.
I am just being called to a briefing. Catch you later.
Hugs,
Dave xoxo

Race finished today everyone YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS. JOB DONE ! and I finished and in style. Had a great run and finished strong.
Firstly can I thank each and every one of you for the amazing emails and blogs. I can not believe the amount of them. All of you kept me going, focused and strong. It has been such an important part of the race for me. Every evening I am always excited and can't wait to see them all. I promise all of you will be hearing from me to thank you individually.
Back to the race today. We dropped anchor at Dorian Bay, a penguin colony. AMAZING.
We were running on a block of ice. Of course my poles had no circular bits at the end which meant that they sunk in to the ice, got stuck as I was going forward and knocked me off balance. The snow was so deep. One step you would sink 6 or 8 inches and the next step you would sink up to your tighe. However each foot print left this amazing blue color beneath. I have never seen color like that in my life.
So we all had to start in single file each of us trying to put our foot in the footprint of the competitor in front. I could see the penguins looking and shaking their heads in amusement as if ti say something like.. Humans ?
Just to walk without falling over was a huge effort in itself. However as the race progressed I got stronger, not handling the poles any longer and getting to adjust to the snow. Once again this was a loop course and after a few laps it became a little easier. I finished lap 9 in 33 minutes, but as the cut off time was 9pm. I was told that I had to do a final lap in 31 minutes, two minutes faster, not a problem. However, passing the finish line the organizers called me back. It didn't matter, I definitely left my best until last and got my medal.
Three 35 in the morning and daylight here of course. Passing all these miniature icebergs with penguins on them. Just great.
We are due to get in some sight seeing tomorrow.
Will touch base with everyone tomorrow.
Nighty night and big hugs.
Dave xoxo

Well done Dave. What a truely remarkable and magnificient achievement. Across four deserts in several continents, and in the one calendar year, you pitted your physical and psychological fitness, sanity and safety against the most inhospitable and diverse terrain of the searing heat of the sandy desert to the sub-zero temperatures of the Antartic and came through with flying colours - and all this with the cheerfulness and humour that we all have come to enjoy and which endears us to you in no small way. My very heartiest congratulations to you for a truely mesmorising, mind-boggling fabulous adventure and attainment and my thanks for letting us share this incredible journey with you through your Blogs.

Well done Dave. You've done it, you've completed 1000km across some of the harshest terrain and environments on this planet. Amazing!
Enjoy the recovery mate!

Dave, we finished the long day together in Atacama towards the start of your journey this year. Your sense of humour that long night got a few of us through, I'm absolutely delighted for you. Great work. Nick

Hi Everyone,
Back on the ship after a long 50K day on Deception Island. What an amazing place. 11.5 hours. Finished strong.
We landed on the island in heavy snow and chilling winds at 6am as planned. (Now this is the Antarctica I came to see. Bring it on J) Deception Island is the base of a volcano in a horse shoe bay.
I took the poles with me, (the first time I have ever used them) and fitted the crampons(spikes) on to my shoes. Three hours later the wind dropped and the sun was beating down on us. So off with one layer, my fury hat, scarf and glasses and on with my JP+ hat. However once again the weather changed, bit of a storm came in and the wind was chilling again. This time I wore my ninja balaclava (with my JP+ hat on top) and changed my ski glasses to ski goggles. I have to say that I am using all the equipment.
It is amazing how quickly your hands freeze when you leave your gloves off to do something small.
Sorry to interrupt, but a massive wave almost threw me off the chair. If we thought Yesterday was bad….. jeez. There is ice dripping down the windows. The waves are literally throwing the ship all over the place. I have never experienced anything like this.
Not one bit sea sick thank God, thank you Eithne Griffin for sending me the homeopathic remedies and advising me to buy the “slippery Elm”
Anyway back to my story, freezing hands. No wonder, freezing winds, everything was white with an amazing backdrop of mountains all around us. Every now and then a couple of Chin Strap Penguins came to see what was going on. I watched them for ages, so different from the tv or even the zoo. Just to see them in their natural environment – truly amazing. Then they had to alter the course a little as a seal decided to bask out on its back, flippers out, head back, not taking a tack of notice, except the occasional curious eyeball at the lot of us passing by.
Great experience, great run … happy.
So another day down, two to go.
Okay, time for bed. By the way, the ship was not able to get any mails or blogs to us today or yesterday.
Will catch up again tomorrow.
Hugs,
Antarctica Dave xoxo

Way to go Dave O'Brien. Heartiest congratulations. You're the Man. What an incredible achievement. You're now one of an elite band of Ultra endurance runners and a 4-in-a-one-year Racing the Planet athlete to boot. Can't wait to get together to hear the account in minute details. I'm so impressed I'm getting a tattoo to honour the occasion, but as I know I can't stand the pain, I'll get one on your dog Murphy instead. But Hell, it's the thought that counts!!

Hey Dad,fantastic you are doing great, half ways there.Hope you are feeling ok.Bout time you started using the poles,if only you had the nina spimoni snow shovel with you,tis a shame that Mum and Kev smashed it to pieces! I'm a bit confused as to why mum and Eddie b are communicating through your blogg(...Ireland to Antartica and then back to Ireland ..)rather than picking up the phone,i mean don't they know that this is all about you....selfish...that's all i'll say! Best of luck with the next stage, keep taking your SLIPPERY ELM, talk soon, love and hugs Jack xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

I and my golden send you the very best he a wrof-wrof pant pant from a slimy lick-lick!!!smile it truly is a honor too know you and to witness you going after one of your dreams!!!! In my line of work you were a winner the day you were born!!!
Posted On: 23 Nov 2010 07:05 pm
Yeaahhhh Davey. You're only cruising. Well done so. Keep it going as is. AHEM!!!, just to clarify one important statement for both you an' Mar. When I said "can I have your babies" I meant can I have Jackie, Colin and Ian. With Fiona married and flown the nest, Aoife in Oz, Brian in Dublin and Aidan always out, it's reeaaaallllllly lonely here. So Mar...what did you think I meant???? Eeeek, 1) I don't think that's possible, 2) I think I'd find that rather painful in the attempt somehow.
Posted On: 23 Nov 2010 06:47 pm
Hi Dave, you are a remarkable man. I struggle with the odd frosty morning.
Our whole JP team is willing you on. you are a winner.
Stay safe.
Warm regards
Derek

Hi Dave,
I spent the weekend with Aisling, Terry and family in County Down. We have been following your progress with great interest. Just read your blog: Antartica sounds like an extraordinary and beautiful place. So, you're over half way there. Stay safe and have fun. Cheers from Dublin,
Damien.

Hi Dave,
another one down and two to go, sounds like you are totally on top of it.
I hope you manage to get some decent sleep.
I'm running off to a meeting about the book launch ( we are launching it on Friday at The RDS, so we will raise a glass of bubbly in your honour)
Stay warm, be safe and no unecessary heroics..........
Talk later,
Peter.

Good on you Dave your playing a blinder you are down at 77.50 so I think you are doing better than you realised. Great to hear that Eddie B has offered to have your babies, as I have retired. We are all thinking of you here. Oh by the way it is very cold but dry here so I was wondering could you paint the outside of the house when you get home - thanks a million.
Love Mar. xx

Hi everyone,
At last, I am getting all the emails and blogs. Fantastic. I am just blown away. They mean so much to me. As always, all the emotions in there. Boys have I got some catching up to do when I get back.
Well day two down, but little to report. Like yesterday, still on King George Island, we couldn’t get our 6am start because of bad weather. We eventually got going at 10.30 (1.5hrs earlier than yesterday).I had a Zodiac (ship to shore craft) all to myself as Sevan was filming me. It was great as the guy on the craft booted it. We got to the shore in no time.
This time I took my poles and fitted the crampons on to my shoes for grip as yesterday I used a lot of energy slipping and getting proper footing in places. So armed to the teeth like a true pro, I headed out…. Only for the race to be abandoned, I kid you. Storm coming in. We only got 9k done. So only 51K completed with only 3 running days left.
Tomorrow they are hoping to get 15 hours in ! We will see.
We are sailing now for Deception Island and will start racing there at 5am. As I am up in 6 hours so I am going to hit the sack now. The boat is listing all over the place and a good few are sea sick. I am fine but feeling a little coming on from the typing.
Sorry it is so short but if you we sitting here with me I think you would understand.
Hugs and kisses, catch you all tomorrow.
Love Dave. xoxo

Hi everyone,
Well day one down and what a day. We were supposed to start a 6am, however the weather was so bad that we didn't get to start until 12.10. If you saw all of us wrapped up to the gills as we boarded the Zodiac craft. We were all like Everest climbers.
The weather went from snow to sun to ice cold wind. The running surface also was as diverse. Snow at various depths, turning to slush/water also at various depths. Thick mud and a stoney in parts. Lots of climbs and always windy. It just sapped every bit of energy out your legs. There was also a fair bit of slipping and sliding. I think tomorrow I will try out the poles I brought.
My socks were soaked as a result of sinking in to snow, ice, water and even mud. Thanks be to God I brought the second pair of shoes. However my feet were not cold. Because of the activity they heated up straight away every time they were wetted. (and that was a lot) Having said that, they are a great gortex shoe and I am really pleased with them.
So Ryan Sands finished 8 laps, four others did 5 laps, myself and most of the field did 3 laps, a few 2 laps and two people taken out. For staying to long at checkpoints. They said they had frostbite ! I am not so sure.
So I covered my marathon distance today, knackered, but pleased, however not before I photographed a bunch of penguins and a seal who passed quiet close to me. There are very strict rules about the wild life here as we are not allowed to approach them. If they approach us though that is okay.
Enough about that for now. It is 20 to one in the morning here and I have to be up in 3hours and ready to run an hour later. So I am going to hit the sack. Thanks to everyone and a big hug for sending me messages. As always it means so much to me and I know you all know who you are. Forgive me if I don't answer tonight, but will try during the week.
I am thinking of you all and particularly Ian at you party bash tonight.
Big hug Mar

Hi Dave. Well, what can I say? I'm hard pushed to walk to the village, let alone run in the conditions you are facing every day. Also as you are so much older than me, I mean A LOT older. Tee hee. Mam is counting the days for you to get home. Tomorrow is May's birthday, so say a special one. Just like everyone else,I am so proud of you. Loads and loads of love , your one and only skin and blister. Janxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Penguins and seals? How cool!! I'm totally jealous. I'd ask you to put in a good word to Santa for me, but you're at the wrong end of the earth. LOL
Keep up the phenomenal race! You're amazing!
Joyfully and Warmly,

Hi Dad,great to hear that stage one is done thank god!As for the two competitors that pulled out did that have anything to do with my little eye drop trick that i gave you in the previous blogg?????? We had a great night last nite at Ians party but we missed you and your bag of props ,no doubt you'll make up for that at Barry's 50 th.Just a quick question for you ...do you know who the penguin's favourite aunt is? Answer...Aunt-Artica....thought you might like that one! hope all went well with todays run, best of luck for tomorrow and make sure you don't sit on the ice for too long cos you wouldn't want to get POLAROIDS! Millions of love and hugs Jackie and Kev

Hi Dave, congrats you are playing a blinder so far you seem to be able to tolerate the cold better than the heat. Last night was a great one your antics were missed. Hope today went well for you. We are all tracking you here so keep up the good work - proud of you.
Lots of Love Mar. xx

Hi Dave,
well done on your first day. Despite the difficult conditions it must be astonishingly beautiful to see such a landscape and all that wildlife.
Here in Finglas with Mum and Pepsi, Mum says 'Hi and stay warm', Pepsi seems oddly unimpressed with your blog.
Jan and Kate on way back from Ian's party so I am sure they will fill you in later today.
It's fantastic to get your updates Dave, so keep them coming.
Well done again, be safe and keep up the good work.
Peter.

Well done Dave.
What another great achievement for you to get day 1 under your belt. This will hopefully prepare you in good stead for the remainder of the campaign, at least you finally know now first-hand what's in store.
Hope you're getting my emails and jokes.
PS
Nice one putting the blame on that poor Orca for attacking the crab eating seal !! How's the seal coat by-the-way?

Hi everyone,
Wel day three here and almost two days on the boat. When I look from my porthole window the constant sea swelling changes as the horizon disappears and is replaced by a wall of sea. However really getting used to the rocking to and fro.(except when I am blogging. It is like reading in the car, after a while you feel a little sick.) That "slippery Elm I bought and the remedies that Eithne sent me are really working. Most of the other competitors have these patches which do have side effects. Tiredness and even blurry sight in some cases.
We are due to see land around midnight tonight. We then board the Zodiac's (ship to shore crafts) at 5am. We start our first figure 8 loops at 6am. All of us will run for 13 hours and then stop. Racing the planet will then work out the mileage and speed of everyone and then work out over the week roughly how long the 250K will take each individual. Weather is key here and will dictate everything.
There is a Shackleton lecture about to take place I am going to go to in a few minutes. Before then can I thank everyone so far who has emailed me. I have got a few. Thanks to Eddy, Eric, Robbie, Dylan, Brian, Everything is slow coming in. I have no bogs response yet and the emails seem to be days behind. So if I don't mention anyone, it means that I probably haven't got it yet.
Most important is my sons Birthday. HAPPY BIRTHDAY IAN. Big, big hug. I will be thinking of you and will celebrate with a couple of Juice Plus+ Complete's. Even though I may not be there in person for your 30th. I will be with you.
Big hugs also to Mar, Jackie, Colin, David, Mum, Janet, Kate, Peter, Barry and Damien. Thinking of you all. And all my friends who have sent me such good wishes and prayers.
Love you all.
Dave :-) xoxo

Yo Davey.
Just caught the update. Looks like the 1st day was tough indeed with 2 having to pull up early because of the cold. Time to put on those penguin slippers I think. The 'Breaking News' said that a local crab eating seal was supposedly attacked by an Orca, but we all know that it was you looking for extra clothing :-) Keep the faith and hang tough.

Thinking of you all day Dave. This first leg will give you a good idea of what to expect for the rest of the race but look to the light at the end of the tunnel - what a fantasic experience and achievement. Best wishes Eddie B in Cork.
PS
I have unearthed those old VHS videos of the twins Taekwondo bouts between the ages of 8 and 15. Hours and hours and hours of tape - I'm so exicted I can't wait to get together. We can then hear all the full 15 mins of your 4Races escapade and then play the tapes - sure you're more than welcome even to stay over for a few days to watch them all :-)

Hi Everyone, my second attempt to blog today.
Well day two on the high seas sailing through Drake Passage following the route of many famous explorers. Left Ushuaia yesterday after a restfull two days there. Even though the ship is dipping well side to side, it is considered calm. Copeing okay with the sea sickness, however I can only get a few lines and I have to break. It is like reading in the car, I feek sick. So the messages will be short but often. Like now....
Catch you later.
Hugs,
Dave

Hey Dad,
or should i call you the final frontiere or FF for short ?
Now,i hear that there are 8 other grand slamers so we'll have to come up with a plan to take them out,i mean we don't want anybody else stealing your thunder,i hear a couple of eye drops in someones drink can give really bad diarrhoea without too many other side effects so that's a little trick to keep up your sleeve !
Well the best of luck for tomorrow, have a blast and take it easy, lots of love Jack and Kev

Hi Dave,
it all sounds very exciting, don't think I would be too keen on boat heaving from side to side.
Jan and Kate heading down to Cork tomorrow for Ian's birthday and I'm off to Casement to hang out with Mum.
Keep doing the blog and keep us all up to date.
Am keeping fingers, toes and everything else crossed for you on this the final leg of your big adventure...........
Lots of love from Dublin.
Peter.

Yo Dave,
Have been waiting for you to set up your Blog. Very best of luck on the Final Frontier. However, if I were in your shoes I think I'd enjoy the sea-sickness, as looking over the history of past Antartica races, it's going to be more pleasant on the sea than running the race itself!! Hope you got my first joke. Had to send it to you in two parts via "Email a Competitor" for obvious reasons ;-). Let me know if you did. Will be thinking of you and willing you on all this coming week. Will send you on a few more jokes also to help keep a smile on your face and your heart up.
PS
Any chance you can post me on some Antartic ice?
