Last night had to go down as one of the scariest nights of my life!  You can only imagine how bad it could be when Sim and I hit the sack at 8. Every wave felt as if the ship was going over,  every noise was a potential iceberg crashing through our cabin.  Searching for the rescue remedy at 12 in a cabin that looked as if a hurricane had ripped through was met with both tears and hysterical laughter!  We decided to go in search of comfort, no not in a wine bottle…but the captain of this insane ride that we really wanted to get off of.  With his beautiful Spanish accent he assured us all was just fine,  we should go back to bed, and this was nothing compared to what was still coming!

We made it through the night, had breakfast delivered to our room ( something that has never been offered to anyone on this ship, don’t know what Simone is promising these guys in Spanish) and now just watching and waiting for the next big storm to hit.  Can’t wait for dry land and a meal that doesn’t keep sliding away from me.  Another game of scrabble and a fine glass of chardonnay and all should be fine.  Time to celebrate my overall position of which I am really delighted, some of the men….not!

I think that was the last song I heard playing at 4 am this morning!  Boy did we have the party of a life time!  But before I talk about the party, there is a reason I did not blog for the last two days…..sheer exhaustion and pain!  The hours and hours of pushing my body more than I have ever done so before took it’s toll.  The sloshy snow, much tougher than  sand and the freezing cold, give me 50 deg heat any day…..but the conditions out here in Antarctica were insane!  To keep the mind focused and strong over the wet and cold was the most difficult thing I’ve ever done.  Yet with my good ol iPod (thanks auntie cas ) and head down, sometimes planted face first in the snow, I would get up and forge on!

Simone and I decided to tackle all 4 Deserts  in 2008.  Drinking Champagne on a yacht on the Nile after finishing the Sahara race, we made pact to finish all four.
Two more unlikely individuals you could not find for this challenge.  Yet here we are on a beautiful ship, sipping champagne and celebrating our achievement.
One thing I’ve learned through all of this is you do not understand how powerful you are.  I have met some of the most amazing human beings through doing these races,  my personal best was yesterday as I watched Ryan Sandes cross the finish line.  He is simply one of South Africa’s most amazing sportsmen.  You have no idea the power he has in those legs….to run behind ( yes, always behind  ) and watch him run up snow covered hills was a truly awe inspiring sight.

I was proud of South Africa yesterday,  proud of Ryan being the first person ever to win all 4 deserts and proud of my beautiful friend who really has taught me how to suck the bone marrow out of life.  A special thank you to my two beautiful children who inspire me in on every level every day to be the best I can be, and to Pam Golding  for supporting me in every possible way.  My advice for anyone sitting out there reading this who wants to do something like this, all you have to do is put one foot in front of the other………and soon you’ll be walking out the door……  Oh, and buy a good pair of Gortex Socks!

Oh and the party made it all worth it!  Cant say much more, as they say what happens on ship……stay on ship!

Well done! First SA woment to complete all 4 races is an amazing accomplishment - not sure there are any other women out there mad enough to try and outdo you. I am sure the significance of what you have achieved will slowly sink in over time and what a story to tell the grandchildren when you are rocking on the porch with a glass of cold wine. This accomplishment deserves enormous respect. See u soon. Richard

Yesterday had to go down as one of the best and worst running days of my life so far!  I was like a race horse gunning  for home, loved the feeling of the cold wind filling my lungs.....hated the ice cold water filling my shoes.  If no one has ever thought of this as a great torture treatment....put this in the book.  Every time your toes would feel like they may survive this torture, you would be treated with yet another dip in the Artic Sea.  No words can describe how cold and cruel this is. Today I though I would beat my torturer and wear plastic bags over my socks, it worked until I stepped into a puddle that turned out to be a lake! OMG  you can not imagine the shock!! Words, mostly swear words, escape me!
All said ,we are having the time of our lives.  We are so blessed to be here doing what we love to do and getting the support from people all over the world. You guys all rock!  Thanks for the mails and the support..it's as good as rocket fuel.

P.S.  If anyone has any suggestions for keeping my feet dry.....please send me your suggestion!

Hey K, how's my little diamond girl? Oops, silly question! Want you to know that have been thinking about you and want to wish you all the sparkly luck in the world. No suggestions at this stage regards keeping your feet dry (maybe rub vaseline / wax into them). Your blog is fab and just shows how important your mental state of mind must be so you go girl and say hello to the penguins for me. BTW, what wine did you take? Rgds, Candleman

Posted On: 22 Nov 2010 01:49 pm

Howzit K.. WOW!! Sooo impressed!!! Checked out the results today..Well Done, 58 Km yesterday, Little Legend, thats a loooong way on a bicycle never mind doing that on foot under those conditions. Keep going strong DRM, youre doing so unbelievably well! The race pics look insane hey, very harsh terrain, great pic of you racing up on the site, looking very strong! As for wet feet, what a bugger.. in theory, if only you could get hold of a bunch of candles and melt wax and cover the porous parts of your shoes! x

Posted On: 22 Nov 2010 12:38 pm

Lying under a fan in the bush......hot! Actually wishing that I could be in your place for a day. Please look after those battered toes....no Ranulph Fiennes stunts out there. Holding tight for you!

Posted On: 22 Nov 2010 09:59 am

It is very hard to imagine the conditions that you are racing under when the sun is shining in Cape Town. I don't have a solution for the wet feet other than to watch where you put them - which is not very helpful! For the rest, positive throughts continue to fly across the miles from here to there and I hope that you strive on. Richard

Posted On: 22 Nov 2010 09:58 am

Keep your feet dry --------stay on the boat!!! :)

Posted On: 22 Nov 2010 03:55 am

Kimberly did you go barefoot yesterday?! Mmm - other than Goretex trainers, which I assume you have, plus some self-styled gaiters that seal around the bottom - you could use plastic bags for that with super glue - but you'll get condensation...so see if any spare goretex windproofs you can use the arms and fashion into gaiters. Someone will have a sewing kit and superglue... Obviously if I was there I'd have sorted it for you! x

19 November 2010 06:10 am (GMT+02:00) Cairo

After a night of thinking the ship might sink and how we would survive the cold seas, we woke up to the sun shinning  and a few hours closer to our 3:45am wake-up call to the start of our long day. As most of you who know me know that's when I'm usually getting home....no worries, we'll just have to party all night tonight. So tomorrow we will be FRONT LOADING, a new word in my race dictionary!  I did not know you could front load a race....this really is a new one! And attempting to achieve a 100 miles on the first day is also another new one, along with snow and ice and wet ect..... I wish I had a front loader to just push me along!

My beautiful cocoon will be replace by open territory, cold fingers and toes and hostile penguins. Life on the ship has been so much fun.  We have a beautiful luxury suite with a huge window, 380 tread linen, hot showers and what every girls needs on an endurance race, a hair dryer!  This is the best race ever....

When reality hits us tomorrow at 3:45 we made feel a little differently.  I have yet to go outside and feel the ice cold smack my face, perhaps this afternoon I'll give it a bash....or perhaps not! I might just go to the sauna and dream this is all over, got the medal and am headed home to a fabulous beach holiday!

18 November 2010 07:11 am (GMT+02:00) Cairo

It's amazing when you figure out how things work!  it should be the simplest thing in the world, open your camera option on your blackberry and record a video....how cool ha! I didn't even know my phone could do this! What  surprise when simone and I discovered the video option while waiting for our flight to Ushuaia. we were like two crazy kids who had discovered how to drive....we could do anything! I can not disclose the contents of our first video, but boy did we laugh!

The laughing was more of the nervous kind.  As we watched 120 passengers board the plane to the end of the earth ( the other 118 passengers all over the age of 70 going luxury style onboard cruise ships to Antarctica....why do some of us have to take the road less traveled ) guess who the two to board were? Like old bubble gum stuck to the bottom of the chair we looked at each other peeled our intrepid bodies off the seats...looked each other straight in the eyes as said " LET'S DO IT

Thanks everyone for all your mail, you have been so amazing in your kind words and support! xxx

Wanna Be Schumacher by Kimberly Dods

The drive to the airport is probably going to go down as the scariest part of this race.  Give your 23 year old the keys to your BMW and you have a Michael Schumacher wanna be.  It’s Sunday morning, eyes barely open (not for long) and there I am being driven by Schumacher down the M1 at 160 kms per hour.  Remind why is she driving?  Oh, I forgot...I don’t know how to drive..hummmm.  Quiet mom!  I’m driving and I know how to drive, not like you..hummm...I stay quiet because I know she’s right.   Please just get me on the plane in one piece, I silently pray as I untangle my new angel wing necklace. I want to get it on asap. I really think I need it, not so much for the race but for this very scary drive.

I think the kids were delighted seeing me pass through the doors of the airport.  After the usual lecture, if anything happens to me look after each other, have a fab party and don’t spend all the cash in 7 days and give some to charity.  I waved goodbye to my beautiful Schumacher and her equally beautiful co-pilot brother and off they raced.  I think the last thing I heard them say or scream...was yea, HOUSE PARTY!  Who do you think is going to have more fun? The penguins and me or the Schumacher’s.  Have fun guys, please don’t break all the glasses and save a glass of wine for me when I get home.

Penguin Talk by Kimberly Dods

What a way to pack for the adventure of a lifetime!  It’s the night before departure and here I am looking at the mountain of equipment that has been lying on my bedroom floor for weeks.  Why oh why do we procrastinate and leave the most important things for the very last minute.  The decisions that lay before me are just so difficult....what does a girl wear to the coldest place on earth!  Give me Ibiza or Cape Town, but Antarctica....so many penguins to impress!

Looking down at the two piles  before me,  what’s in and what’s out, I’m feeling as if I’m making progress and then as if some god with a warped sense of humour decided to play a practical joke on me, I’m in total darkness.  You know the kind of African darkness where all you can see is nothing. No matches, no candles, packing comes to an abrupt halt!  Shit, and I thought I was doing so well.

Time ticks past....I’m feeling anxious, I need sleep, I need to be rested, I haven’t slept for days...I need to PACK!  Why do we always leave the most important things for the last minute? Why?

My intention was so good, for weeks I had begged, barrowed and broke the piggy bank to get the 57 items of mandatory equipment....now my new bedroom carpet. Every day I woke up to it and every night I kissed it good night....it just whispered back to me....please....pleeeeeze., No I had to wait for the perfect moment, a romantic candle lit moment to pack.

So there I was, with my glass of delicious Chardonnay and a room full of candles, I said farewell to my 40kgs of stuff I think I will need to survive the Last Desert.  I hope the penguins are impressed!

The countdown has begun!  The sleepless nights, endless questions racing through my brain and doubt plague my days.  All I do is run.....run when I wake up, run when I get to the office, run to the shops to buy yet another piece of equipment I think I need to surrive Antarctica and then run home to yet another sleepless night!

And then I see someone coming towards me in the office, and I can see they have that look on their face like they have to ask me something, and I know what that something is....AM I CRAZY! No.  I am not crazy.  I love the thought of running around in circles in Antarctica freezing my but off.  But most of all, I love that they think I'm crazy.

Thanks guys for all your support.  I will try and be a good blogger and keep you all up to date as this journey unfolds.

Sorry to say you do need to be a little mad to run around in circles with penguins....whilst your 'normal' work colleagues may not get it, be re-assured I do understand :-) Well done to both you and Simone on getting there, raising all the money for charity and seeing it to the finish. I got cold in Africa, so no way would I have survived down there! Rx
