Namib Race (2011) blog posts from Geoffrey Heald

07 October 2011 02:00 am (GMT+02:00) Cairo

It was very hard!

But I did not expect anything else…..

At check point one my shin splints started to flair. By check point two I was hobbling. By check point 3 my sense of humour has disappeared.

Blisters seemed to be the name of the game and only a shuffle was my mode of movement.

It was very disheartening, as I have been able to run/ walk most days and now all I could do was hobble.

I am so pleased that I trained with poles as these were my saving grace.

I teamed up with Lorens (one of my tent mates) as he too was taking strain.

It is amazing how far 10km’s can take when one is literally crawling it.

But giving was not part of the plan.

After check point 4 the evening  had arrived. This was a welcome relief from the heat of the day.

At check point 5 we stopped for supper, where I emptied the contents of my dinner over my clothes and pack so, I not only felt grim but I smelled of Roast Lamb and potatoe freeze dried food.

From Check point 6 to the end check point it all just seems one big blur. And the only goal was to meet the next check point.

By the end of check point 8 my ankles were so swollen that I could not get my gaiters off. So I cut them off, slipped on a pair of flip flops and readdressed the desert. What a dream, no running but the hobble moved to a fast shuffle.

So, here I am back at Base Camp.

It is really hot here and the flies are something special as they love fresh opened blisters.

Tomorrow we pile into the busses and head back to Cairo to the pyramids. The smell is going to be special.

Here we will go over the line for the grand finale photo shoot AND THE REASON I DID THIS RACE- Free beer and pizza.

Thank you once again to all of you who have followed my progress and your amazing support.

Thank you also to all the wonderful people who I have met on this race.

Thank you Lorens, for your companionship on our long day out.

Thank you sweet Princess for you.

Thank you Phoenix and Faith for making my life so rich.

So, I guess that is it and all that is left to say is Adieu and I think that crochet and bowls is my next big mission.

I am not sure that there is anything more for me (or us)to say that has not already been said in my earlier e-mail messages or in Sue\'s blogs. What an utterly incredible, amazing, body breaking, soul enriching, live changing experience this must have been. We have all followed you, every step of the way, with a an ever changing mixture of joy and heavy hearts. BUT, it has all been done from the comfort of our homes. You and you alone know the agony, the heat and the toil You are an inspiration Geoff. A bloody inspiration! (and not bad for thirty nine and three quarters eh!!!!) Words cannot convey how Sue and I feel right now. Bathe your feet. Enjoy the beer and pizza (you little cheap-skate!) Enjoy your beautiful wife and children, as I know you will, enjoy your forthcoming travels and until we mee again at the end of year, go safely and go well.

Thank you all for the amazing messages, they are amazing and really are keeping me going.
Today was interesting.
It was one of the easier days?!
But seemed to still go on for a long time. Today I spent most of the day by myself which was really nice as I was able to work out one of the "Advanced Mathematics equations" that I have been toying with for time. I think that after 4 marathons consecutively through sand, heat and the general body odour which wafts around, one is able to find the solutions to such equations.
I
t is very hard to write about the days as my fingers are as tired as my body. There is a host of things that need to be done before bed, one of which is draining blisters.
BUT! I am good, in high spirits and look forward to seeing a few sand dunes tomorrow with a splash of heat thrown in. I have no plan for the big day tomorrow - I just know that the stars will guide me and my soul will be fed by the moon.
I feel alive and so happy that I entered this race.
What to do next?
Andy thank you for your lovely letter.
My sweet Pea, Thank you soooo much for the endless, photos, letters and you.
I was thinking today how blessed I am to have you in my life and was wondering who on this planet would have such fore thought to put those amazing packs together and with such love. I realised. Only you.

Travel safely to Cairo and I will send a last blog after I have rested from the long day.

I will sms you when we leave the camp site with an ETA for when I stick to your lips lips like chewy at the Great Pyramids of Giza. Big kiss to Monkey and Faithy.
Love as always
Desert Warrior
x

Good Morning to you Desert Warrior. I'm wandering what I'll do to start my morning (with coffee in hand) once you've completed this epic journey. For now I check in on you each day. Aaah well, will just have to go back to FarceBook and see what other less adventurous humans are up to;-)! I wish you cool winds behind your back to push you thru to the end. And a wondrous oasis to rest in when you arrive (guess that's the best way that Christine's arms have ever been described...) Much love to you, K (and co)

For once Geoffie I am speechless except to share one observation with you. During this last week your loving family and wonderful friends worldwide have travelled with you on your amazing journey albeit from the end of a keyboard. Daily Sahara 2011 has been an emotional roller-coaster and totally all-consuming for us all. But the observation I want to make is coming through these international keyboards you can feel so much love, pride, admiration, and resepct we all have for you. You are a true hero and a giant amongst men. I hope whatever pain you are going thru will now be numbed by the fantastic satisfaction of finishing stage 5. What an achievemant. xxx

We are sooooo proud of you... you must be going through some life altering things and that you are keeping strong. All of a sudden it feels like the things that we struggle with each day seems little in comparison. The basics are still most important. Take care and run well. We are with you in thought.

Posted On: 06 Oct 2011 07:26 pm

Lover, this is me signing out for the night. It is nearly midnight here and I hope you are strolling through that desert and enjoying the vastness while the sky twinkles back at you, winking its praise at your magnificence.

In case those of you following Geoff haven't seen this, the following is from a Stage 3 update: "When South African competitor Geoffery Heald appeared at the checkpoint, he unleashed his trademark high energy. As Francisco García, the official photographer of the event summed it up, “As soon as he arrives, he always brings laughter and entertainment”. Yay, go you desert warrior. I hope you are sliding down moonbeams.

Monkey: Dear daddy. I wish u very good luck and I wish you a monkey that can take you across the desert. Mia: I wish you very good luck and I hope you are okay. Kim: You living legend. Would give anything to hug you at that finish line. Christine: Hope you're having a um, "whale" of a good time tonight. Hitch a ride on a humpback if you're knackered. It has been so hot here today that every time I stand up I have to hold on something I get so dizzy - and all it makes me think of is all you mad buggers racing/running/walking/stumbling/crawling/cursing/tripping across the Saharan sands. My hat off to you all. I cannot believe you are doing this in this heat! Your strength of mind and beautiful character makes me proud Geoffrey. The day is beginning to cool off and with the setting sun, I wish you strength for tonight. Luna power is all yours! Moon dance across the dunes and unleash your inner wolf.

Big day on stage 4 bru! You smoked all around you by like half an hour. Hopefully the image of the bitterly cold black Label draft figured into the equation. You will be finished your mega day when you read this. Im sure you went well. Dominating!! U the man!!!!

Posted On: 06 Oct 2011 07:57 am

Well done Guffy, keep it up skipper. Not sure if you've been receiving my emails, I hope not. I've been following you to the detriment of my business. Hurrah. Anyway, easy day coming up. Enjoy it bad boy.

good languid cooool morning from us. (a thought: if you're planning to stick lips to my mate at Giza then keep them well protected - none of that blistered, skin-peeling action please). Halfway mark passed, all downhill from here!? So enjoying your enjoyment...with the benefit of no blisters and all my toenails in tact! So much love and good will to you...you inspire me...your love of life and your family inspire me. Stella says: "Good luck Geoff. And hopes you're having a good time."

Geoffrey Heald arrived at Checkpoint 1 at 8:43 in 60th place looking and sounding cheerful as he came to the reality that "In January I hadn't even run a 5 kilometer race and now - am running around the Sahara Desert in board shorts" FOUND THIS ON BREAKING NEWS EMAIL - YOU ARE FAMOUS!!!!!! AWESOME PROGRESS - SOUNDS AMAZING - KEEP THE FAITH!! I THINK YOU GONNA BE HOOKED ON THIS CRAZY STUFF. LOVE THE MINI BAYLY'S

04 October 2011 02:46 am (GMT+02:00) Cairo

Because it is a satelite download I have only just got all these amazing messages from everyone. Thank you, thank you, thank you.....
Happy birthday Debs, Pen, Adri and happy anniversary Kate and Travis.
I have to get my feet rested.g I am shot but in good spirits . Today has been hot and tough. What amazes me is these sub-sonic humans who pull over the line in four hours. The heat is so disabilitating and a few of the top guys are falling which makes them seem that much more human. Everyone is sore and blisters are part of the daily ritual.
My sweet girl, I hope that the Emiratest is good and that you rest well.

Just to let you know my game plan of running first thing until the heat comes seems to be working.Ufortunately by 9.30 it is already in the mid 30's.
Love you long time sweet girl and lots of love to our beauties.
Tomorrow is day 4 and then all I have left is a little night stroll in the desert......
Thanks once again everyone for the messages they mean so much.
Geoff

Posted On: 05 Oct 2011 01:19 pm

So tomorrow is the little one. Am so glad you have transcended the physical and are now able to spirit your way through the upcoming day and night. This is your final push. So Happy Birth Day sweets. The you you'll find at the end of it will be worth every step. That said, enjoy your day at the beach. If you get tired, build a sandcastle with a nice bedroom and crawl in for a zizz. (By the way, I had a word with the big guy and you're promised cool winds, small dunes, hard sand and some spunky people to play ball with.) Beer and pizza have been ordered (might be warm beer and cold pizza, but hey, who cares) so arrive hungry. God speed, safe travels, and I'll see you on the other side;-*

FAR BETTER IT IS TO DO MIGHTY THINGS TO WIN GLORIOUS TRIUMPHS EVEN THOUGH CHECKERED WITH FAILURE THAN TO TAKE RANKS WITH THOSE POOR SPIRITS WHO NEVER ENJOY MUCH OR SUFFER MUCH BECAUSE THEY KNOW NOT VICTORY NOR DEFEAT

Seems like you're flying our flag high.... "When South African competitor Geoffery Heald appeared at the checkpoint, he unleashed his trademark high energy. As Francisco García, the official photographer of the event summed it up, “As soon as he arrives, he always brings laughter and entertainment”. Think of you often as my very ordinary day gets underway and wonder what the sunrise is looking like in your very extra-ordinary day.

A NOTE TO YOUR BLISTERS: Hey guys. Hit the highway. You're nothing but a bunch of freeloaders and this race has no place for layabouts like you. I mean what are you contributing? Nothing but hot air (or warm piss if you're trying that one Geoffrey?). Really, fork off. Go do something useful - like annoy a camel or burn out on the desert sand.

Dear G, you appear to be 5 full hours ahead of a one legged North Korean and 10 hours back from an Englishman wearing springs. This is pretty good going for a man having his mid-life crisis in the sahara. Enjoy the collective madness. We are thinking of you. Chilly & green here in Grabouw. Love from S & Lolo too.

02 October 2011 02:21 am (GMT+02:00) Cairo

Whew!
Day 1 down, 5 more to go.
Before I start, I really want to thank you so much my Princess for my treasure trove of gold, it makes streams of tears roll down my cheeks each time I look at them. Thank you everybody for the lovely photos, they mean so much to me and your well wishes keep me strong. Monkey and Faithy I love your pictures and have put you pictures on my bag today which gave me strength so many times. Princess you are in my heart and you gave me so much strength today.

So, here I am wanting to get off my legs though I thought I would get the blogging done and then put my shredded feet up.

I am in tent number 11 with 9 other people around the planet. They who are all becoming good friends. Today I also made some great friends out on course. It has been really good to meet people as they while the hours away that much faster.

The morning started off at a beautiful lake where we had spent the evening- there was no hooter or siren but the countdown and the energy made for a great send off with the Egyptian’s beating their drums as we headed off.
After about 3 km’s into the day my middle toes nail cracked which was not great but I have learnt to deal with things as they happen. With my pack being a bit on the heavy side and the heat feeling like the centre of the earth had opened up – I settled into a good march. The check points are very welcoming relief and can’t come soon enough. There are a bunch of Taiwanese folk celebrating their 100th year of drum banging and as such are running in a huge puppet. A very brave feat.

When we left this morning they said that it would only reach 38 degrees. However, at the ”Valley of stinking socks and camel turds” the tempreture was up to 46 which is when things start getting rather cosy.
Spirits among the competitors is high amongst but the blisters are taking their toll.
So all in all a good day. I feel good, my legs are a bit sore but my spirits are high and I am licking my lips for my freeze dried nosh later on tonight.
Thank you once again everyone for the support and love.

Last but not least I love you so much Christine to my two little cherubs dearly. Fly safe tomorrow and know that you will be in my thoughts!I am counting the days till we are all together again.

xxx

01 October 2011 02:08 am (GMT+02:00) Cairo

We arrived to such a beautiful evening at El wahibi baba loo bala. As the sun disappeared over the many dunes of the Sahara. One of the challenges with being in the cyber tent is that there are 150 others wanting to send their big news about arriving at El wahibi baba loo bala.
With a great serving of freeze dried food in me I am off to bed to read the last pages of my book which has to be binned in the morning. Tomorrow is supposedly the easiest of days a mere 38 km of sand, dust and long expanses.
They have imported a bunch of Egyptian drummers in for the night to bash the night away.
Everybody is very chilled and the awesome thing is that front leaders are scattered amongst the plebs.

What I really like about this event is that they have a swim up cocktail bar with hooka pipes for athletes to toke upon. I have decided to not partake in such delicacies as it will effect my tumbleweed effect tomorrow.Du message.
Due to the long line of other people waiting, I am going to disappear now but would like to thank all of the support and amazing message.
AND I LOVE YOU SWEET PRINCESS and a big kiss to those to wonderful children.
xx

What you are doing is extraordinary. Have been thinking about you all day - and having just watched that mad englishman on the Moroccan race popping blisters and staggering around the place I really hope that you are walking a bit and drinking a lot. also finding out things you never knew you had in you... keep going strong! We're watching you and cheering you on. xk

...and in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 YOU'RE OFF! Monkey, Faithie and I are huddled around the computer as the 7 bells chime. "Hello Daddy. I wish you the best of times on this big seven day race. Love Monkey" (He typed in the "Monkey" bit because he wanted to sign off himself and give you his strength. "Good luck Dad! I wish you a happy birthday.faith" (not to be outdone, she signed off too, and in some way, I guess this is your birthday.) So IT is here. The long awaited day. Your heart must be pounding. The gun goes. 150 eager participates move forward as one, each with their own dream, goal, fears, much thought-about pack. I trust you are walking for the first 20 minutes. Every day. You've got a long way ahead of you. That slow warm up will serve you well. I am sprinkling perfection into your knees, courage into your heart (mine is full to bursting I am so excited), calm into your mind, peace into your spirit. Enjoy this babe. You have waited so long, and worked so hard. You are so capable and creative. Weave your magic on this time of yours. Celebrate. Surrender. Succeed. But mostly, enjoy. Enjoy. Enjoy. Enjoy. I love you. Mwah!

"Ground control to major Tom
Take your protein pills and put your helmet on........"

In the words of Bowie, what else is there to say.....

Trying to make decisions like:

Should I be eating loads of pizza, rice and bread or should I be getting my stomach smaller for the protein pills and yummy freeze dried food?

Should I be eating lamb schwarma's at the road side vendor or should I be sticking to "Charboiled Burgers?" - yes they have a fast food outlet claiming such fame.

Should I be lounging at the hotel swimming pool or slogging the streets getting aclimatised and desanitised to the heat?  which is not here - but I am promised is sitting out there waiting for me.

Should I be doing push up's to keep my core strong or is it all a bit to late now?

Should I repack my bag again? - nothing wrong with 23 repacks

............"This is ground control to major Tom, you've really made the grade
And the papers want to know whose shirts you wear
Now it's time to leave the capsule if you dare!"

Breathe, hyperventilate, Breathe.......

This is ground control to Major Tom. Your circuits dead but nothing's wrong. Your protein pills are packed (again) and your helmet's almost on. 10, 9, 8, 7... Vaseline those feet like there's no tomorrow, velcro those gaiters (oh Lord I hope they work!), slap on that sunscreen and get out there. Yeah boy! Show that sand who's boss. Aaargh! I'm so excited for you. Wish I could be there to do a Tsunami wave. Love you more than there is sand in the Sahara.

10 September 2011 03:24 am (GMT+02:00) Harare, Pretoria

With only 3 weeks to go, I have to say that a feeling of complete panic is settling over me.

I feel like a young school boy about to enter an exam not knowing whether he has studied enough!

I see this process as a women would being pregnant for the first time.
My training has taken 9 months and I am sure that I it is going to be a wonderful journey BUT not really knowing what lies out there.

I am not a runner and as such, found it hard to keep the enthusiasm going over the months. My programme has not always been spot on but at least 8 and a half months later I am still going to be on the starting line.
I do believe that the mind makes up 80% of this race and that if one follows the words of Lord Baden Powell " Always be prepared ", it will help in the race.

I met with a fellow competitor,David Barnard, this week and it was awesome. We were able to share a few tips and tricks which I think are good just to make one that much more prepared.

Here are a few things which I have learn't over the month and I hope may help you on the big day out. Obviously they may not work for you but if they do, I am only happy that you have one more thing in your bag of preparedness:

1.) I put vaseline on my feet before putting my shoes on. This has resulted in a lot of beach sand and bad shoes not giving me a single blister in 9 months. It does not make one's feet sticky and after a big day out one's feet are smooth and soft. It really works!

2.) Try nothing new on the race day. I suggest trying all freeze dried food and kit before arriving.

3.) Wear good sunglasses.

4.) Do not wear Blue it attracts insects. That is why in butcherys those fly zappers always have a blue light. I have sourced white shirts with long sleeves. Light colours are best. I have found a sunblock that is both a 50 and an insect repellent. Cirtronella oil is also great.

5.) Even if you are using the same make and type of shoe try them out before the race.

6.) Macedamea nuts are an awesome source of energy and date bars.

7.) No washing for 7 days - find a few wet wipes and soap that needs no water.

8.) A nautral way to wash a way the aches and pains is arnica

9.) If a cup of coffee is your thing then a few hotel sachets are awesome. Small packets of  Miso soup are also great as they are light and delicious.

10.) Pre-mixing muesli and nuts and powdered milk is a great way for breakfast. In South Africa they have a product called Future Life which was developed for HIV patients. It is super light and only needs water to be added.

11.) David was telling me about having salt and vinegar crisps crushed up into a bread roll shaped about the size of a small cigarr is an excellent munchee to have along the way.

12.) Have an awesome sense of humour and see this as a journey and that the race is only as long as the next check point.

I really look forward to meeting all you fantastic people in Cairo in a few weeks time, where we will meet as strangers and leaveas friends. Having experienced something very special, in a very wonderful place.

Laters,

Geoff

This is a great blog and some very good tips that you've learnt along the way. I can vouch also for the crushed up crisps and a spoon is useful for eating them with.
