Yahhhooooo we did it All of us got across the finish line. It was a real struggle and tough stage. I am really proud of the guys who had never even done a maraton before yet alone something like this.

Kaspars is a really strong and tough guy. Lots of respect for him. At checkpoint 3 he told me his right foot was so swollen that he had 2 options: 1. Cut the side of his shoe off to provide room for his foot to expand (we were not even 1/2 way).  2. Cut his small toe off. After he finsihed his shoe work things went ok for him.

Nikita managed the entire race without a blister. Past that he wore hiking boots. Really. Heavy and fairly clunky they got him to the finish line without a scratch.Chris wont believe this.

The 3 of those guys did shots of whiskey starting from CP5 (50k roughly). This helped them speed up on a few parts which helped them get through to the final bit as the day started and the sun became strong They also teamed up with some Chinese guys for shots at one CP who were so impressed they took pictures. Amazing Baltic toughness.

As usualy Dainis and Nikita sped through the first few parts. They always start out really strong. Past CP4 we all got together. Dainis then began to run. I followed and we quickly got to CP5 - anteother 10 ahead. At CP 5 Dainis decided to sleep for a few hours so I took off. I started walking but seemed to feel strong. I then started to run bits. I felt stronger. I then passed every I could see to the finish line. I barley stopped at checkpoints and felt great. Actually one of the most rewarding runs i have ever had. I have hardly any feet damage and I feel fine. Really. I feel tired but I could run today. Contrast this with Atacama where I was really in bad shape. So I actually finished 64 out of 123 that finished. I might say for an old guy thats not too bad.

When I was running alone - for what was about 7 hours - lots of strange things happen to you. The demons come out and things also get funny. I had taken 3 Immodium so far that day to prevent a stomach leak :) I spent from 60 to 65k running and deciding whether I should fart. I weighed the consequences. I even tried a tester. Everthing seemed to say no. I finally decided no. Good decision in retrospect. That might be too much detail for some of you but Randy, Lisa, Chris and a few others will relate.

Well we are off to Cairo tomorrow for a 2k fun run to finish in front of the pyramids. Then to the hotel. I really look forward to brushing my teeth. Shower and beer after that.

Thank you so much to all of you guys that posted. It was really fun to read those ever night. I really really appreciated it. Love to all you guys.

Lisa you would have actually been impressed with my final 35k section. A Chinese runner I chased for what was about the final 3k waited for me at the finish line. He said I kept him going as he did not want me to pass him. I told him he made me use all of it - everything I had trying to catch him. We cheered our finish together. Was cool. Love u and call you tomorrow!!!

Congratulations Fred and Team Bite!!! sorry for the late reply, have been in rural Saskatchewan for the weekend, even likely more remote than the Sahara!:)) That has GOT to feel good!!!?? Oh, as Steve said: Booze and running... that takes a very, very special talent!!! Completely understand the visit by the demons, they seem to show up at the worst time! What a great achievement, for you, the 2nd of a major ultra and for your team ... an impressive first endurance event...truly courageous. You have since trotted around the Pyramids of Geezer (haha, I know, not quite right, rather, you are a geezer, but not at heart!!) Thanks for sharing this incredible journey with us, we have grown through your endurance, suffering and victory! Relax, rest and replenish! re·plen·ish/riˈpleniSH/ Verb: 1. Fill* (something) up again. 2. Restore* (a stock or supply of something) to the former level or condition. 3. * Does not include wine, beer, spirits (especially expensive wine) or otherwise Love from all of us on the couch in Regina, Saskatchewan!

Guys, as I'm catching up on race details, especially the last 3 stages, I am in awe of your achievement. Absolutely inspiring. Incredible. Courageous. Crazy. This is something that nobody will ever be able to take away from you. Bruno

It doesn't get any better than this. Btw Fred, you always make good decisions, especially the weighty ones :)

Posted On: 08 Oct 2011 05:33 pm

Wahoooooo!!!! Way to go! Like everyone else we are in complete of your determination, physical and mental strength and your courage. It brings tears of joy and pride to my eyes. And I agree with Amanda, cut the old guy crap. You will never be an old guy. Thanks for keeping the blog, we absolutely love reading it, laughing and crying. Love you and pass along congrats to the others on your team. Sarah, Connor and Brodie. PS: when are you coming to do the west coast trail, maybe you can run that?

Posted On: 08 Oct 2011 04:06 pm

Huge congratulations on an amazing run Fred! "might have a beer"??? What??? Have a six pack of wobbly pops and a 24 ounce steak. Maybe some ice cream. At least....

Loved your last post Fred. Congratulations. What an amazing feat of physical endurance and ferocious mental tenacity. You are one of a select few on the planet who would even consider doing this type of race; and you kicked ass! Great job for the rest of the team. I am truly in awe of the shots of whiskey during the race. Enjoy the sites of Ghiza and have a safe trip back to Riga.

All in and accounted for!  Dainis and I went off ahead of Kaspars and Nikita after about 25k. Dainis was super tough – even though he had a sore knee he pushed me all the way to check point 4. I left him there and got in a bit before 4. He was about an hour later and the boys shortly after.

We had a blessing today – a fairly strong wind from the side. Kept it pretty cool but hard to notice you were sweating. Then we turned into the wind. For about 14k. Felt like I was not moving. I did the last nearly 10k in 1.5 hours so somehow the headwind helped me. I am still trying to figure that out.

I feel quite strong. One small blister.  Even though tomorrow is 86k I may actually go for it. Well maybe not.

Kaspars counted 10 blisters today. Nikita with his hiking boots has none. Really unbelievable. Dainis has a few but thankfully his knee seems ok. Nikita well he is just tough.

Thank you so much for the wonderful messages. Lisa had to talk me into the blog thing and truthfully I like it.

The guys from Japan do a very very inspiring and cool cheer in the morning. It raised the hair on the back of my neck. It was somehow part warrior and part just Japanese. Uber cool. I stopped by their tent today to thank them and ask them for it again. They said my words were a very big honor. The smallest things sometimes are really the most important.

I keep snoring fairly hard and loud. Last night I woke up and noticed one of guys standing over me with a pocket knife. In case:

-          Dave M gets my Bang and Olufen hifi

-          Matt gets my mountain bike

-          Randy gets my motorcycle but only if he promises to ride it round the world first (I put this on my list today)

-          Lisa gets a husband that does not snore

-          Val gets my hiking equipment (good for her new home and life!)

-          Chris gets my running equipment – finally it will break 1:50 for the half marathon

Well love to everyone. Really appreciate your comments. Very huge hug to my fantastic wife Lisa who actually registered us for another 250k ultra while I am still running one. Now if that’s not love what is?

Lisa I love you deeply.

See all of you in 86k.

Fred

Great work Fred! Wow what a day! That is a grrrrraaaaate time and outstanding accomplishment! Hope not too much damage was done today... tomorrow will seem like a walk around the block compared to today...okay, maybe a sore walk around the block. Noticed your team mates don't have a time as of yet, hope all is okay with them. We're all very proud of you and I know Amanda and Sarah can't wait to hear about our plans (Steve, glad you are in) for a looooong motorcycle ride.... you could use some time off yer feet!!! Hi Fred! I just talked to steve and he told me you finished stage 5 in 18 hours!!! That's so incredible. You are having a great race! Steve parents are arriving in a few days so I've been busy cleaning our suite downstairs. I have some advice; never live in the same house you have rented, people are disgusting! I had my own marathon on my hands and knees with a toothbrush! Congratulations on an amazing race! Truly inspirational! Love Sarah, Connor and Brodie

Posted On: 07 Oct 2011 04:38 am

I just saw the results from stage 5. You guys are machines! If you are riding around the world with Randy, don't leave without me! Congrats on the strong finish time yesterday and have fun with the rest of the race.

Hey Hey, Congratulations all of you on finishing the Monster day! Amazing...86km in blazing sun & heat through sand & who knows what else...truly awesome & inspirational. When I was running this morning I thought of you each step I took, how long had you been out there, what was the temp, how you were all feeling... trying to send you some energy. Can't wait to read all about it tomorrow. I can imagine what camp will be like tomorrow...another MASH episode...attention incoming wounded! Seriously though I hope you're all ok & so happy to be done that daunting long march..now its gravy & you can look forward to some rest & the victory lap on the last day .... and yes then some COLD Alus! Fred & team, just amazingly inspired by what you guys are doing out there. I guess you will be looking forward to Nikita's cigars and cognac at the finish line! Hope that you make it through the long day today in ok shape. Craig

Great to hear you guys are doing well! I will follow up tonight to see how the big one went today!

Posted On: 06 Oct 2011 03:22 pm

Freddie.... tell (okay, beg or bribe) that Spanish photographer that we want more photos of you and your team... and use some fill flash so we can see your sweet grizzly face!!! ... and why are you not shaving? :) BTW, what the hell is written on your hat??

Posted On: 06 Oct 2011 03:11 pm

I'm so glad you're maintaining your sense of humour! Randy riding around the world! Again, your blog made me laugh and cry! But then I started to wonder whether you were actually leaving Randy your bike because it's Randy or are you doing it for me? Months of peace and quiet! I cannot believe you guys are getting close to the end of the race. We are very proud and so glad you listened to Lisa about the blog. We can do so little to support you so following your amazing progress and making the "odd" comment means allot to me!

Posted On: 06 Oct 2011 09:41 am

Your LFF (lazy fat friends) David and I laughed out loud at your blog! We are hoping your next run does not impact the consumption of Glu wine and sausages at the Christmas markets! Thinking of you and your team. Way to go! xo D & D

Hey guys! Reading your blog i am usually laughing out loud :):):) Looking at your photos (full of energy and happiness) i actually cannot believe you're writing this blog, but you guys are full of surprises! Posted On: 05 Oct 2011 09:56 pm

Yo Freddie (aka Latvian Running God) and guys!!! Wow, you guys are trucking right along! So good to hear you are grinding it out. Decitin called me and said they want me to do a photo documentary of you in your next race... well, not really, but it would be cool to do!! Good luck on the monster tomorrow, just 1K at a time ... add you and I doing a MC trip to your bucket list! I think we also have to do some kind of bike enduro... why run when you can roll!!! hahaha Eat and drink lots, stay focused and from all of us in Regina .... we are so proud of you and the team!

04 October 2011 02:07 am (GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi

All boys arrived safely - around 11 hours though so its a bit hard to walkaround and I was nearly sick while trying to eat. Temp was over 40 and at times it was really just too hot. Kaspars and I went together and Nikita and Dainis were together. We drank easily 11 liters of water today.

Only 1 crisis today for me and it was just 10k into it. Felt like i was low on energy and wobbled a bit then seemed to get it together.

A few notes on the course and day:

- todays course was named - Sea of Sand - perhaps a touch too accurate. it was endless mountains of sand which was mentally painful
- you know you are really hungry when someone drops a jelly bean at a checkpoint and you pick it up and eat it when they are not looking
- Kaspars sings really loud when he has his ipod on
- we saw a scorpion and a scarab beetle - that was cool
- this morning I had to hide in the poo tent because i did not want to reveal that it was me that made such a horrific noise

Some replies to your posts:

- I was not the one farting
- decitin and sheepskin are in fact dangerous combinations - slippery fur...
- no locals selling beer although we kept praying
- if no pain no gain: some of my body parts fell off today - what do I get for that?

Really appreciate all of your comments. One last thought. Most of the day I thought about my wife. I am really luck to have her especially because she likes to do these events together. I missed her a lot and cant wait to give her a hug.

Fred

Kaspars singing sounds strange.. Is he ok? :) Keep enjoying your adventure!

Posted On: 05 Oct 2011 09:25 pm

well done boys, almost there keep it up (tell Kaspars this is nothing compare to playing basketball againt Lietuva :-) , we are already training 8 am as usual) so we need him back in one piece

Posted On: 05 Oct 2011 05:49 pm

By the way...many people make references to you and beer....hmmm....do you by chance LIKE it? I'll drop a path of jelly beans from your house to Bite in late October. Let's see if the jelly bean theory still holds. :) Go, go! xoxx

Posted On: 05 Oct 2011 05:43 pm

Dear Fred - You guys are amazing. Sweating just reading about your heat and endurance. Thinking of you every step of the way, even feeling the sand crunch in my shoes. Valmiermuizas will be waiting for you upon your return to Riga, but think of the many cold and perfect refreshments you'll have before then. Keep going! You're all power and we're all proud of you! Big hello to Dainis and your team. xoxx

Posted On: 05 Oct 2011 04:11 pm

BTW Freddie...Do you know what today is? Happy Anniversary...13 years ago today we were getting hitched in Oia! Hope your day was a good one. Good luck tomorrow...the long march day! Will be sending you guys extra energy & cool thoughts. xo

Posted On: 05 Oct 2011 03:34 pm

You guys are sounding strong. Keep it up! I wonder what pain you are enduring as I type this message. Amazing.

Posted On: 05 Oct 2011 08:52 am

Just amazing, Fred! Wow. Now I see why you did the hill behind the house here TWICE in one day.

Posted On: 05 Oct 2011 07:39 am

WOW..you guys are doing really awesome...as Chris said just a few more days! Freddie how is y our stomach? How is Dainis's knee? How do you feel the Sahara compared to the Atacama...maybe not a question to answer while you're deep at the mercy of the Sahara desert! BTW we're registered for Jordan 2012 :o) , Frances Chan sent a funny email asking how it was possible that you were registering for another race while at that very moment participating in one... How are your feet? Your blog made me laugh & cry ... I was hysterical when reading about you hiding in the poo tent...I am pretty sure you're not the only one :o) . Doggies are both good, weather here has been nice, today typical beautiful baltic fall day...you'll be happy to know that i finally took the coffee machine in (yes I found the place) & so I hope it will be fixed & fully serviced by the time you return. Ok thats all for now I hope day 4 was good as I read the sand is a bitter harder on this day so slightly better then the deep soft sand. Looking forward to your update. I'm uber uber proud of you & the guys, I am happy you are there doing what you love & the fact that you have motivated & made such a huge difference in the lives of 3 friends! Love You xoxo

Posted On: 05 Oct 2011 07:01 am

Great to know you are on the good mood:) I wonder if Kaspars singing is one of the main reasons to keep you going fast:) and Fred, when everything will be over, not only local beer will be waiting for you, but also Latvian Valmieras Alus in your fridge:) best wishes to Bite team from Latvia!

Posted On: 05 Oct 2011 03:26 am

Way to go guys! Sounds ridiculously difficult, and amazing. Well done. Just a few more days left! (and then the beer from the locals...).

Posted On: 05 Oct 2011 02:39 am

fred, very tough day...very loving words. i agree with amanda...i laughed and cried too, as i also imagine lisa did. soooo proud of you all (even tho i don't know your 3 other team mates, it doesn't matter, i am rooting them on also. so go team bite!!!) i wish i had an inspirational quote right now but i don't...so in the mean time i hope this will suffice..."go team go!!!"... (and keep the sand out of your gitch!!!!!) love val and scott

Posted On: 04 Oct 2011 10:26 pm

Hi Fred, I laughed and cried reading your post today. I bet Lisa did too. You and your guys are amazing - really strong, physically and mentally, even though t clearly didn't seem that way at times. "All men dream: but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds, wake in the day to find that it was a vanity: But the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, For they may act their dreams out with open eyes, to make it possible. ...This I did." Lawrence of Arabia (i felt quite appropriate for the day! Love and hugs, Amanda

03 October 2011 03:25 am (GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi

Well that was a tough day at about 43k and again probaby in the 40s for times.Thankfully we had some wind most of the time. Kaspars and I were around 4:23 and Dainis and Nikita around an hour later. Simply incredible course. Very dramatic views except for the 4km hill in the sand - that was a bit tough.

Tomorrow is a real test - as we start off with 250m of incline in soft sand. If we can get past this day 4 should be somewhat easier although one should never underestimate the desert.

A few thank you messages:

Randy the Decitin idea saved me today. Really. I look a little funny from behind now but in no trouble.
Margret the sheepskin really works and all of the team from Japan wants one it seems.

So far no  blisters for me - Kaspars has a few good ones. Dainis has a pretty sore knee
from around 10k so hes a tough guy for finishing today.

Nikita says hi to Anna and Tatjana. He also says to say to Tatjana that his gear is really great.

Thanks for all of the message everyone it is really nice to read them. I got to go as someone close to me in the cybertent keeps farting pretty bad.

Fred, Kaspars, Dainis and Nikita

I hope you guys are fine and gonna finish all stages ;) Hoefully Dainis's knee will get better and he will be able to finish everything. Have fun and enjoy your time if I may say so ;)

No pain no gain, guys! You're taking amazing challenge on way of self improvement!

Posted On: 04 Oct 2011 08:41 am

Great Job Guys! Keep up the hard work and remember pain is just a figment of your imagination:-) All the best, Matt

Posted On: 04 Oct 2011 05:46 am

Sounds nothing like Baltic beach. Good luck guys, keep it together!

Posted On: 04 Oct 2011 04:14 am

Way to go Fred and everyone! It still blows my mind that you are doing this again. I hope all your training is paying off. I guess all that's missing is two blond babes with a cooler of beer and snacks when you finish!! Half way there! Congratulations! We are thinking of you and cheering you on every step of the way. Love Sarah, Connor and Brodie xoxo

Posted On: 04 Oct 2011 03:32 am

Oh Fred, BTW your dog is being an absolute monster at night...velcro dog won't let me out of his site. He misses you a lot. 2 days ago he was stung by a huge wasp in the park & it really hurt him & within seconds he was really limping but on the opposite side, so not sure what happened but I think he was confused over what happened...he is totally fine now! And Zuli is Zuli...learning quickly it seems from the master, adopting his stubborn ways..she has definitely taken a turn this week of independence from the Sammy school of 'i hear you but i'm not listening to you:o)". xoxo

Posted On: 04 Oct 2011 03:28 am

Hey Freddie & team, Great job guys! One step at a time, one check point at a time, one day at time! Can't imagine how intense the heat is. Fred how are the gaitors working? How is the camp atmosphere & your tent mates...are you having a great time? Dainis hang in there! Please tell the guys i'm sending them lots of energy & a cool breeze from Riga!! Seen any desert creatures yet? Good luck today! GO BITE GO ! xoxo

Posted On: 04 Oct 2011 03:27 am

Well done Fred. Keep it up. Happy to hear that you guys are all doing well. Hopefully, you will be up the hill this morning before it gets too hot. Have a great day.

Posted On: 04 Oct 2011 12:46 am

Riiiiiiight....someone close to you is farting? My guess is someone REALLY close to you, like so close HE is actually sitting on your chair! Good work to Team Bite, especially their leader. Two days completed means you're almost at the half way point! Maybe there is a new business opportunity in extreme racing - combining desitin and sheepskin! Wait - that sounds like a baby boutique. Doing this race confirms you are no baby!!!! Love you and best wishes to the Bite guys! So far I found one pic (#85 day 1) of you Fred, looks like you're listening to instructions but I haven't looked at day 2 yet. Love Amanda

Hi Everyone, For some reason Fred has not been able or doesn't know I have set up his blog yet. I received an email from him yesterday & all 4 of them finished Stage 1. He said it was incredibly hot, peaking at 46C with no wind..brutal. Haven't received any news today yet but I hope to get an email from him overnight. I will update his blog tomorrow if he hasn't already. I know he super appreciates everyones well wishes & following him & guys along their journey. Stay posted...Lisa xo
