Namib Race (2011) blog posts from Yosuke Kurosawa

07 October 2011 02:21 am (GMT+09:00) Osaka, Sapporo, Tokyo

I completed Stage 5, "The Tethis Ocean March", totally 86.4km for 13 and a falf hours.
This long stage is called as an overnight stage, because many competitors have to run & walk from the morning to the midnight or to the next morning. It also entertained us with very varied views and environments.

Fortunately my left knee was far better han previous stage. I started running from the start point with cheerful mind. The gods of knee, thanks a lot! HIZA NO KAMISAMA, ARIGATOU!

Also, I was very fine with healthy stomach, while some competitors have been getting feeling bad due to tired internal body. The gods of stomach, thanks a lot! ONAKA NO KAMISAMA, ARIGATOU!

There are 8 check points (CP) in this stage. I ran until CP4, but I walked and somtimes walked from CP4 to CP7 due to hot and windy weather. On the way to CP5, I met Ono-chan who was feeling bad due to stomach issues. As he was walking slowly, I passed him but Nakamura-san catched up to me at that time. On the way to CP7 I followed and catched up to Nakamura-san again, and we ran and walked to the finish. I met him for the first time before 6 days in Sahara, but we enjoyed conversation until the finish. As the sunset came on the way to CP8, we have run supported by head lights and the half moon. There was a very fantastic world. Suddenly, someone had catched up us with very high pace, "BAKUSO" from the dark deserts. He was Ono-chan! He had recoverd and started to run to catch up top rankers. As a result, he finished at 11th rank and Nakamura-san and I finished at 12th rank at around 8:30pm. Shana was ranked at 9th. I admire Shana's mental toughness and Ono's FUKUTSU spirits.

By the next morning everyone of Japanese team mates could finish. Also, everyone of my tent mates did. All of we are happy! I like and admire all of them.

At this stage I tried some musics. U2 must be one of the best music to listen running in the deserts. Guns'n Roses also excited me. Lady Gaga is dangerous, because she made me not only high for tentions but high running pace.

BTW, trail food is critical to retain good physical conditions. I prepared powders of sports drink, salts, mixed nuts and some kinds of power gels. most of foods made me healthy conditiion, but nuts are tough. During the race, we simply continue to drink water, eat salts, eat a piace of foods like nuts, and repair lips with lipstick regularly. Very monotonous. Sometimes I wanted to drink beer, eat YAKINIKU, and sleep in the soft bed. I really hope usual activities in the unusual world.

At dinner and the morning, cup noodles and DONBEE are quite nice! Alpha rices are soso.

Today is Day 6, a rest day. we are taking a rest and enjoying slow time in the deserts. SUKOSHI NAGORI OSHII NA.
We stink, but we don't care because all of us stink. tomorrow we will be able to go to shower!

Thanks for reading this blog and/or writing message for me!

05 October 2011 02:35 am (GMT+09:00) Osaka, Sapporo, Tokyo

Completed Stage 4, "The Gardens of the Castle", totally 40.4km! The course is along a wide valley with many rock formations. It was fine with strong sunshine as usual, but slightly cooler than yesterday. It was below or equal to 40c degree.

I can run!
My left knee has been getting better than yesterday. I tried to run from the start, following Shana. Shana was so fast and looked to be confident with this competition, so I gave up following him but kept running most of this stage. finally, I finished with 5 and a half hours at 12th rank!

Shana was at 6th rank and Ono-chan was at 7th rank. I'm very pleased my friends competes in the top rank and I'm very encouraged. While I enjoyed trail walk with nice view with my friends until 3rd stage, I enjoyed "the competition" today. My tent mates were pleased my early back to the campsite. Most of my tent mates are very fast and they always finish the goal and back to the camp far before me, but today I met them in the course and encouraged each other. CHOTTO URESHIKATTA.

Nakamura-san, Shin-chan, Sanshu-san have finished earlier than the previous stages. We'are very happy most of Japanese team mates are keeping good physical condition.

Listening music makes me more powerful! I understood mariage of deserts with the Rolling Stones is quite cool!

BTW, last night it was very windy and our tent was partly broken. Some staffs came right away and fixed it, but we were very concerned the tent might broken again, listening strong windy sounds. However, Shana, my Japanese tent mate didn't know it. All of my tent mates were surprised that. His sleep must be as deep as a child.

During the race a good idea of comments for my blogs offten pops up in a sudden, but I usually forget that. So, KYOU WA KORENITE!
Again, thanks a lot for your reading and/or giving comments. HITOTSU HITOSU SAHARA DE YOMUTO, NAKISO DESU!

Stage 5 is the overnight stage, totally almost 90km. I will take a deep rest tonight.

04 October 2011 03:06 am (GMT+09:00) Osaka, Sapporo, Tokyo

I completed the 3rd stage "Through the Sand Valley", totally 42.6km without any problems!
This stage is constituted with a lot of sand dune ridges and I enjoyed trailing real deserts which were somewhat different with stage 1 and 2. I got known the world is beautiful!

I have walked from the start to check point 4 with Shin-chan as yesterday, but I tried to run from the last 5km. Pain in my left knee has been calming down while I don't why. I could did last spart to the finish.

All Japanese team member completed until 2nd stage. Some team mates finished 30 minutes to 1 hour before the cut-off time. However, Abe-san has decided to give up to join the 3rd stage due to his bad condition. We respect his smart decision and we swear we do our bests for him.

My fun in the deserts is to get a lot of friends from varied countries. Mark, who is a British living in Osaka, is also get known with each other. He is very unique and AHO! He will come to Tokyo to drink with us.

At the first night I could slept well, but last night I couldn't. We need to drink enough water even during the rest time or sleeping. So, I need to go to toilet in the midnight, but I was surprised at thousands of stars and galaxies in the sky, I have never seen.

I'm really encouraged with a lot of messages in this blogs. I can see only this site.
MINASAN, HONTO NI ARIGATOU! TOTEMO TSUYOI POWER WO MORAIMASHITA!

Anyway, I will enjoy rest of 3 stages.

You are amazing, Kurosawa! Have more fun!!!

03 October 2011 02:32 am (GMT+09:00) Osaka, Sapporo, Tokyo

I finished the 2nd stage, “Sandy Horizons”, 41.6km with hard packed sand. It was fine with strong sunshine and temperature gained to 45 at peak time.

I was not able to run due to pain in my left knee, but I could walk. Today I have continued to walk from start to finish. It takes 8 hours with 53th rank, but I really enjoyed today’s varied course with Shin-chan (Shinya Sasaki) through this stage. There is few pain in my knee so far, I may complete the race on Saturday.

To be honest, I aimed to be ranked at above 30th in my mind, while public comments of mine was “completion of  the race”. However, I changed my internal objective to completion, too.

During this stage I tried to listen music with i-pod in the deserts for the first time. I chose a custom album “marathon song” edited by my best friend, Napa. It really made my emotion skyrocketing! I have almost to dash despite my broken knee. A song of our friends recorded at Soukou-kai on 28th is left for the critical overnight stage.

I was surprised there are many kinds of sands in Sahara. As this area was deep in the sea millions of years ago, I saw KASEKI of crumbs and crushed bones of fishes. Also, I saw exxxxxxxxxxxcellent view like Great Canyon!! I take many photos during this race, I will show you after back to Tokyo.

Most of my tent mates are very fast ranked at above around 20th . Eric was a champion of Gobi March 2010. So, when I finished and went to my tent “10”, everyone was here today and yesterday. So, I can’t get pole position in the tent every day. I have to sleep surrounded by big and tall American, British, and Germany.

Except for my left knee, I’m very fine and relaxed. I can eat everything fully.

Anyway , I have to say thanks for my senior and colleagues, because they were willing to make me take long vacation for the race despite very busy seasons for our business.

I will prepare for dinner from now. See you tomorrow!

02 October 2011 02:31 am (GMT+09:00) Osaka, Sapporo, Tokyo

As it's fine and over 40c today, I felt tougher than expected.
It takes 6 hours and a half to finish at 57th rank, but I felt so far so good, excluding one concern over pain in my left knee.

After the start, I felt I'm in the good condition until check point 1. I enjoyed fantastic view what I have never seen yet. However, I felt something wrong around outside of my left knee (IBT?), where I injured when I was a university student. I thougt I should be careful especially for injury because Sahara Race will go on for 7 days and we need to run every day except 6th day.

I decided not to run and to walk to goal through cp2 and cp3 today. However, pain in my knee has getting harder as I walked, although I used poles to support heavy weighted back packs.

In terms of temperature, of course I felt it was very hot, but I could endure until middle of 40c degree because there was no humidity.

In the middle of the way, I was alone for about one hour. No humanbeing was in my sight during this period. Fortunately I didn't missed the pink flags which are the marks of the course and are set every 100m. If I missed the flag, I could not advance no more, or I may be wondering in the deserts still now.

Finally I fiinished and my friends invited me at the goal.
Ono-chan and Shana, Thanks a lot!
Also, thank you for all of you reading this blog!

I will take a rest for the next day, stage 2.

Today I'm flying to Cairo in Egypt. This is my first desert race. I have started running just 6 moths ago, and decided to participate in Sahara Race 2011 just 3 months ago. I just wanted to challenge inconceivable competition and cumulate precious experience for my development and spreading to my family, friends, colleagues and acquaintances, whom I render thank to. It's my pleasure to be in desert with fantastic athletes from all over the world. Yosuke
