Namib Race (2012) blog posts from Tara Gaston

05 November 2012 09:03 am (GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi

So the Sahara Race 2012 is officially over. The aching hips has subsided a bit, the balls in the calves have gone down, the dirt and sand has been washed away (and I realize I am sadly not as tan as I thought I was haha), and my stomach has been moderately satisfied with a well done cheeseburger from the hotel pool bar (although I cannot describe how much I wished I could have been ordered rare---but beggars can’t be choosers when mad cow disease is a risk factor…ha ha).  The final stage was a short 2km stroll through the Pyramids of Giza and did not count for time, so technically the race ended at the end of the final stage two nights ago. However, for me it’s all about walking through that final banner, getting the medal, celebrating with everyone, and enjoying pizza and beer. We unfortunately finished stage 5/the long day out in the desert, so had to wake up Saturday morning and take a four hour bus ride back towards Cairo. It was a bit of a mood dampener (not to mention extremely stinky and cramped) but once the Pyramids came into view, you remembered how lucky you actually were to go be out here. So we exited the buses and formed this mass of strange, dirty people in backpacks. Guards on tall, white camels surrounded us and attempted to keep some local vendors from pestering us with nonsense postcards and hats for “vedy good price maam.”  The camels were so interesting though—they stood so grand and proud, chewing on spit with these enormous teeth. Quite a sight.  Then we marched off for the final minutes of the race. Everyone pretty much walked it and took pictures, enjoying the Sphinx, and the Pyramids around us. Unfortunately the day was completely gray and overcast—go figure we have gorgeous (and uncomfortably hot) sun for the past week and then on the last day when we are seeing one of the ancient wonders of the world we are given a totally crap day—oh well, once again it is hard to be disappointed when you look at the big picture and realize how amazing of an opportunity this has been…and incredible year in general for both me and Jimmy.  Anyways, the 2km walk through the Pyramids took a lazy 20 minutes, as we shooed off young Egyptian children welcoming us to Egypt. They kept calling me Shakira and then told me I had a beautiful husband (aka Jimmy..haha but it was definitely not worth trying to tell them otherwise so we went along with it). And then the funniest part was when they asked Jimmy how many camels he had paid for me….of course jimmy thought this was great and responded, a half of a camel. Of course…

The last 50meters was up a hill and then it opened up to the finish line and everyone celebrating waiting for all the competitors to come through. Obviously for this last bit we had to play “Running Roulette” so at any point either of us could start sprinting for the finish line and that would mean the race was on…loser had last shower at the hotel…I wonder who that was going to be??haha. I started and of course Jimmy easily cruised right by but slowed up at the very last second and we were able to come through together. Pretty awesome moment since we have yet to come in to a finish line or even single stage together. AND THE BEST PART……as we were laughing and charging through we did not even realize our magnificent mother standing there with our medals to put on us!!! She surprised us and wow how freaking awesome that was! Definitely the most memorable finish yet. So good to so her and have her experience the celebration with us. So we wolfed down some pizza and beer/sodas and enjoy the final moments of the Sahara Race as competitors came through the finish and everyone laughed and danced and hugged and cheered in relief and joy that they had made it.

So with that, here are the summary points for future racers:

What you absolutely want:

-bigger size shoes (feet swell a lot). I wear 8 and had a 10 shoe and it worked out great.

-gaiters—silk, parachute fabric ones that have drawstring around the ankle and higher up almost to the knee. Also have them sewed on professionally by a shoe smith. This will save you lots of time and prevent blisters 100%.

-if you plan to walk at all bring some poles…also helpful with the big dunes

-fly swatter, fly net, anti-fly anything haha. This isn’t really possible but the flies are a huge pain in the ass and get pretty nasty by the end.

-hydration system so you can carry electrolyte water but also just plain water.

-food that doesn’t spoil or that still tastes good in the heat..lots of bars melt pretty bad and go down like slime—not fun after day 4. And a lot of the beef stews and such just don’t appeal in the heat. Buffalo chicken=the absolute way to go!

Overall, what an incredible week. I admit it went by the fastest yet, and as odd as it seems to say, I actually feel like it went by too fast!!! Looking forward to Antarctica in less than 3 weeks!!!

Tara, loved reading your blog! I would love to do the Sahara race in 2014 and was hoping you would answer a few questions: You started and finished with the same shoes, yes? Was it difficult starting in shoes that were too big? When you say to have your gaiters sewn onto your shoes, what exactly do you mean? Any chance you have a pic of what they look like? Did the weight of your pack include your sleeping bag? Did you wear shorts or were your legs covered? ANY other tips would be so helpful. Thanks so much!

Helllssss yessss!! We did it we did!!! I am still in awe at what just happened. So the long day….phewph, glad that is over. Woke up feeling pretty strong actually—thinking its bc I took stage 4 pretty fair just because the long stage was still one third of the race so I thought I should save some for that (that fact was very scary though and I tried not to think about too often). So did a solid pace up until the third checkpoint. The weather cooperated too so that was a….score. Sorry to hear about all the weather crap back in the states…cant really say I feel too sorry for you people stuck inside and unable to go to school/work or go on the computer. Going 250km through the desert tends to put a damper on your sympathy card if ya knows what I means. Bummer about the house though—maybe this means we will get a real garage for cars….? Eh? Anywho, so at checkpoint 4 the pain of the feet kicked in and the sun decided to be a little monster, so that was unfortunate. However, I did have some freaking fantastic tuna teriyaki jerky and hot and spicy beef jerky (my mouth is currently water just thinking about it…also as I listen to people waiting in line for these computers scraping the bottoms of the bags for the final last scrap of food they have for the next 12 hours). So the food was a nice treat and we started checkpoint 4 up this huuuuuuge dune and kind of ran across the top which was AWESOOOMMEEE!!!! My gaiters have been so lovely this week. I watched as most people had to stop and dump their shoes afterwards but nope…never had to stop once. Booooom! So checkpoint 5 was the sleepover camp….i came in way earlier than I excepted and sort of collapsed in front of everyone with surprise that I was already there. Since I decided on day 3 that a 4oz meal was too much weight to carry today I didn’t have a full meal but just a cliff bar to get me through the second half….hahaha which was still over a marathon distance… depressing and overall a very poor idea. For some reason this race is a lot different in terms of meals, electrolytes, etc compared to the past two so it was a learning process. Next time I will take into consideration how long and hot the days are and how much extra food is needed. Although I did cut back on the electrolyte tabs and stuck to salt tabs and that made all the difference with the nausea. Good thing because that was becoming a real pain in the ars. Oh and my water bladder popped between stage 4 and 5 so it not only drenched my things but I also ran out of water. Luckily I was able to duct tape it enough to get me through the brutal heat of the day. So after the sleep camp which I didn’t sleep at, we had an 11km and then three 8km stages until the end. Sadly this did not go by as quickly as I would have liked and it was a haul to the end. I just kept pushing annnnd J: I listened to your cds and they were perfect for when I was going by the moon….a good mix of pump up with relaxation…that jazz twist…mmm..phenom. Anyways, so the last 25 miles or so were a blur. I had a few mental break downs, fought to hold back the tears, and just kept marching on. Even jimmy said he had hit his limit by the end. He got 26th place today though and I was very happy with 60th. Came in just past midnight which is the best ive don’t yet for the long stage and this was about 10km longer than the last two races. So that’s a positive and I can end this race with a little personal best—something I def didn’t except. Oh but the worst was you could see the spotlights of camp about a mile and a half away so youd start hauling ass towards it and then just hobble all over these mini sand dunes that made your steps all out of line. Basically it was one of the ugliest “runs” I have ever done but I just wanted it to be over. If I were to describe what it probably looked like…imagine someone running for their life from a T-Rex while someone else is pelting you with water balloons so you trip and fall and are just all over the place. Good stuff for sure. Anyways, Once I got to camp jimmy and Gregory were already in the tent. Jimmy mentioned that my legs were going to start throbbing real bad and sure enough within minutes it was like lightning bolts going up and down the legs. Jimmy was “sleeping” sitting up because he couldn’t lay down or his hips would hurt too much…yep….that damn satan sand just didn’t want us (or most people from what it sounds like today) to sleep comfortably. So the two of us tried to catch a few hours of sleep sitting up against the tent. Still throbbing….and it still hurts to lay down. Madness I tell you. Today has been long and hot. The last people came in at 11am this morning. And it is one of the hottest days yet. Wooooowwwwwwwww. Cant even imagine what that must have been like but more power to them. I have one bag of buffalo chicken meal left that I am saving for 2pm but wow is this day crawling. Starving. We are all starving. The camera guy Scott (who is just great by the way!!!) said he had a few extra meals and all of a sudden everyone around him just stared over like a pack of hungry lions—sadly we are not allowed to eat any one elses food though. So back to starving. It is only noon and I am sweating and its gross and I smell and im hungry and im hangry and tired but you cant sleep because you hurt and I am hungry. Cant wait for tomorrow. Seriously. Can. Not. Wait. Me and jimmy just played battleship in the sand haha his idea duh. Not sure what fun activities we will do to occupy our minds for the next 12 hours but I guess I cant complain since sitting here roasting is much better than running and roasting.

To everyone who keeps describing food in their blog comments (you know who you are): I say puck you man. Its cruel. And I now expect all promises to be followed through in terms of what food will be waiting for me. Also frobes-so weird that you mention sommersby and Danish dogs bc I have had the most incredible craving for that this entire week. So random right. but oh man do I want. Love the stef and dam updates. Makes me smile. Always. Loves yous.

Mom, Dad: thanks for all the updates. We did it. Three done. One more to go. Its been a long year eh???

Steve: awesome. Glad you and my mom are tight now haha. Ok everyone is glaring at me for taking to long so I shot them a Kalisse stare and my dragons hissed at them but they are still looking angry so I need to go. But you rock. Mvp on the blog status. So excited for the PDF also…we will need to have a long sit down and discuss everything I missed. All the important stuff of course. Toodles mon.

Its dark and these key boards are tiny so please disregard the typos. Anywho…Another day down and only one more super long day to go…86km….and thats gonna be a long one for sure. Anyways, today was even better than yesterday. The nausea subsided after the morning…I slept outside last night to try and get some fresh air…plus one of my lovely tent mates sounded like they were eating and/or choking on air all night so that was cooooool. So it was A slightly shorter course and moderate terrain with a good bit of hard sand and rock. And what made it even better was that the temperature was about8 degrees c cooler and man did that make a world of a difference. It was overcast until about 1pm. At this point me, john, and Collin were heading in for the last stretch to camp so it was really great in terms of lifting the spirits and saving some energy. Obviously since it was day 4 and we have about 175km under our belt the legs were incredibly sore—as in everything below the belly button was throbbing, especially the calves. Although I must say both gobi and Atacama were rougher on the feet and joints, despite the days here being so much longer. Maybe the soft sand helps reduce the pounding. I have definitely noticed that although I am not physically in as good shape as I would have liked, my mind is definitely much better now after having done two already. I cant believe it is already day 4 and to be honest it feels so good after all the countless hours of studying to just have a clear free mind..not having to think of anything. Being out here really makes you appreciate the small things too….like how a 10 second breeze can be the most refreshing feeling, or how good a salty beef jerky tastes after 8 hours marching in the sun, there was even a butterfly today that fluttered past us, oh and of course the casual banter and pep talk by the volunteers at every checkpoint makes you stronger to just keep on pushing a bit more…the simple things in life man.

Anyways, HAPPY HALLOWEEN. We had the most amazing holiday surprise this evening. Each tent got a little jack o lantern of candy and ohhhhh did that toffee tootsie roll taste so so good. And I don’t even like tootsie rolls. But what was even better was the COLD SODA….YES COLD SODA we each also got. Holy amah zing. Sipped that down real fast. Haha and then a bunch of guys had costumes they carried I guess and put them on and started dancing around to Gangham Star or whatever that new asain song is. Funny stuff.

Jimmy is still killing it. Im glad I have found some good buddies to trot along with. And by trot I mean this hobbling waddle that we like to call the Sahara Shuffle. It is a very funny dragging of the feet across the sand with some very strong arm pumping haha. Gets the job done. The fact that I prob look like a waddling duck from behind is besides the point.

About to chow down on a delicious freeze dried spaghetti Bolognese. Mmmmmm. Then its off to bed in hopes of another overcast day…chances are nah nah for that though.

Oh and one last thing…I was chaffing all under my armpit because my sleeves are too short and my bag rubs so I went to the medical tent and they did this awesome/hysterical duck tape job to try and cover it and hold the bandages on. The duck tape lasted about 10 minutes but the memories will last forever. It was a funny sight. Gotta love using your resources out here.

Ryan; our dear tent mate from gobi…thanks for the messages. Jimmy says that he hopes to see you in Madagascar.

Dad; everyone is really excited to meet the infamous father of the two siblings in Antarctica. Should be a gooood tiimmmmeee chilling on that boat. Also I am assuming the reason why you and mom have been mia in writing us messages is because of the hurricane..howeverit would be nice if one of you somehow got a message out to us. Its been since Monday and although we are the ones trudging across the sahara…we are concerned the hurricane has made our house float away or something. Just very unlikely to not hear from you…or get frobey to send word…or something. Funnyhow the tables have turned. But sheesh you children are giving us a heart attack out here. Go figure.

Again, thanks to everyone for the messages. Long line to get on thecomputers so have to go plus we receive everything a day behind in case I have not responded yet. Hokay shuper. Peace sign fingers emoji.

Congrats kids. Another race done! I'm still amazed at this entire adventure. You have both stayed so focused this year and have done a fantastic job. We are all so proud of you. . To Vera. Whe Tara and James were at their first race in Atacama I became a blog stalker. Seriously. The only way I could feel connected was to read blogs all day and night. And my kids didn't have one So I communicated to them through one if their tent mates! Hey Erik. Remember me?? And I didn't sleep well either. They came home tired and worn out and there i was complaining of being exhausted! It's pretty amazing though. Our kids and these memories that will last a lifetime. I'm sure you are as anxious as I am to give your son a big hug when he returns. Tara and James. See you soon. xxxxxooooo Mom

Hi Tara, I'm your tent mate Jeff's wife. Like so many others watching the progress of our loved ones, I have become obsessed with reading about all of the participants while anxiously waiting for updates.. You are certainly a diverse group. Congratulations to both you and your brother for such an amazing accomplishment. To Mom and Dad Gaston, I don't know how you did it, I haven't been able to sleep since Sunday!

for starters, a message to Mom G: Tara's apartment is fine and dandy...and her hot wheels are safe and sound as well. no puddles, downed trees, nor power outages here in south jersey. Sandy seems to have been passive-aggressive...like high school girl drama. the passive part was south jersey...but north/central jersey was where the aggressive Lindsay Lohan in Mean Girls came out. still no power in central jersey (they're saying november 9th it'll light back up). anyway, i digress, the hurricane is irrelevant to Tara/Jimmy's saga. go team go! you are doing great, and we miss you tons. you'll be happy to know that Rocco has cut 9 hours of lecture off of the next anatomy block exam, so pop open another cold one and eat another freeze dried bolognese to celebrate. in other news, tons of FB statuses and selfies to fill you in on, T, i'll make you a running word document of all the good ones you've missed out on. my upstairs neighbor still whines out for you everyday. or at least that's what it sounds like "TTTTTTTTTTTTeeeeEeeeEEeee. EEEeeeEEEEEEEEeeee." ok, that is all. good luck reading THAT novel on your tiny screen with limited time. sorry to everyone waiting in line behind her. not Tara's fault she has friends who miss her and cry themselves to sleep in her absence....awkward....

Tara! You really need to consider blogging more often in your life, I'd read it, you funny, soooo funnnnyy. But hope you made it thru the long march, i mean i'm sure it was painful but i have every ounce of confidence that my little sugamonkey crossed that finish line, all chaffed and all. Anywayssss tonight, Thursday, Vamps is on, however as I type this i realize I have no power because of sandy still, my day just got sadder than it already was, cause we lost last night in conference so that is over. All day long i was just looking forward to starting at Damon and Stefan to cheer me up, its a halloween episode and Elana goes to a college frat party with Damon and it looks like it gets Vamp steamy. Crap, you know that sad feeling when the episode ends and you feel empty, i now have that. YOu should spend the train ride watching it on Sunday. Or save it for when you order yourself or made yourself a bomb meal and basically have a party by yourself watching our men. Anyways, I'm picking up ding dong from the airport tonight so looking forward to seeing that shining face and hugging the crap out of her, then big spooning. But also im sure you know how i also am feeling after our text sesh before you lost service to the sarhara that selfish desert. So hope your recovering from the desert stroll you took last night, and that your ready for that long 6 point not even worth saying the actual distance because its too small for your time after your overnighter. see any shooting stars? did you wish that we made hsvarsity and started like you konn and i did at Sound Shore on the blacktop. Gosh how times have changed, would never waste a wish on that now adays. peace and love you forever

Hi Tara and Jimmy, You guys are doing great. The Sahara looks amazing. CT is a mess from the Hurricane. 90% of Newtown still without power. The two pines in the backyard ( where we tie the dogs) went down, one on the garage but think the roof is okay. Another large branch broke off and is hanging by a cable partially over the driveway. Halloween Trick-o'-Treating on Main Street postponed til Sunday. Yup, tons of stuff....I love the photos....there are at least a half dozen we should frame. You guys are amazing! As my generation coined..."Keep on Truck'n!! Love, Dad

Hey Tara (and Jimmy) Another humorous blog. love reading them every night. I have been sending along a comment each day so not sure why you haven't received them. I know they have been going through. Anyway, we are all fine. You would have been proud of your Dad; got the generator up and running to keep the critters alive and well and we did just that. powered up now and everyone is well. beach house survived too...mainly due to the wall I guess. no school for owen or kelley this week. she's chillin in jersey with a friend...who would want to be in jersey? hope your place is okay and the car. so that's it. hang in there. great photo of you today with those duct taped arms. I told your dad it was duct tape for your chafing but he argued that there is no way you would have duct tape on your arms......mmmmm...Send Jimmy our best too. he's doing so well and so are you. times today were great. stay safe for the long march. will wait on pins and needles to hear word from the camp. xxxoooxoxoxoxoxoxo

31 October 2012 02:12 am (GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi

Steak. steak. steak. baked potato. creamed spinach. bread. butter. peter lugars. Welp thats all I've got to say today.

Kidding...(but seriously...I am not going back to school. I am heading straight to Peter Lugars. mom thats not a joke. make some reservations and then ill catch a train train back to school later.)

Quick note about today...it was easier and prettier than yesterday but it was still long and hot. Had the wonderful companionship of John & Collin (easy to remember their names right.haha funny). They were monneeyyy. Didnt even need the ipod. John is the one with the broken toe and Collin is from Scottland...it was an amusing day. Other than the fact I felt nauseous the entire time. Not sure whats going on but my electrolytes are making me sick. So sick. Its hard to get anything down all day...which obviously is not good since I am pacing about 9 hour days and most of that is in the worst and hottest part of the day. Cutting way back tomorrow and sticking with a lot of plain water so hope that helps. Makes it hard to notice all the astounding views around me...its funny because as we go we debate who is going to take their camera out and snap the shot...sometimes you just cant be bothered to do any extra effort besides one foot in front of the other. Oh and the best part was this pool waiting for us at the end of checkpoint 2. We stripped down and dove right in. Well actually I had to go fully clothed since there were monks and other reigious figures around who would not have appreciated a girl in a sports bra. Anyways, it made a world of a difference. For like an hour...and then it was bloody hot again. Also it was so strange...I had a vulture circling me all day. It was like it knew I was ready to pass out and die at any moment. Finally I got so tired of watching it circle that I speared it with my walking pole and brought it back to camp to eat for dinner instead of my horrible beef stew. Horrible...beef...stew..

Ok now to catch up on yesterday...and I am still wiped and feel a little sick but am going to run through this in no order and with no concern for spelling or typos. Hopefully my dear followers can deal...

All I want is to swim in a giant pool of lemonade and drink it all as I swim. The unquenchable thirst is absurd. Imagine the worst hangover cotton mouth then times it by 10. yuck. sooo thirsty. all i want is cold in my mouth...pepsi ahhh yesssssssss. seriously tho the thirst is horrid i tell you, just horrid.

Tent mates are GREAT!!
Michael and Liz came together..they work t ogether and unfortunately didnt make it. she is staying to volumnteer tho. Liz is a crossfit trainer so shes awesome duh.

Jeff (def a j name ha whoops my mind is blanking..too much sun) is an outstad-nding guy--reminds me of uncle peter and steve martin combo. he taught us about bunking--basically getting real drunk and eating a huge meal and then waking upp the next day and running a marathon to simulate the pain and misery you feel during these things. i figured i would try the first part of bunking...the marathon running...ehhh. not so sure. We also have Gregory who is French and a strong runnner---he and jimmy share info and get along well. i think he gave jimmy some good races to try out. and then we have the father-son duo from Tawain..i think my life is bad out here...but no no, they come in every day at the very last second before cut off. crazy long days. and they are carrying 16 kg packs. we tried to help them lighten it a bit but it barely helped. my back would be broken. i helped carry the son, Ali's, bag to the tent after he came in the first day and i had to haul it over my shoulder like a carcus. soo heavy. impossible to carry through the sahara. give them so much credit.

sunsets, sunrises, pink moons, gorgeous color skies, the smooth ridges of the sloping dunes, cliffs like in the Lion King...all of that...fantastic!

Also, there was no vulture.

Amanda--so funny you saidd that because literally I am totally OCD with my packing and unpacking. It is probs becoming a pain for my tentmates since all my crap is always spread out all over the entrance. Kidding its good. Mmiss you! Obvs. (insertion of so many awesome love emojis)

Liz--holy cow cant believe you are flooded out!! stay safe!! keep my fave students safe too. shabot shalom. thanks for the message. very uplifting i must say. you are quite the motivational speaker.

Frobes--saw a shooting star last night. i wished that i make it out of this race alive and in good health. then i realized how selfish that was. i apologize now and realize i should have wished for stefan and damon to come and be our boyfriends. again, my sincerest apologies. not sure what i was thinking. please be waiting for me at the airport and then massage my body in the car. thanks.

K, J, S: WHAAAT!!! a hurricane?? this is madness? what luck for me. point, SaTara. Make sure my apartment isnt flooded. So ayou guys arent at school??? are you back now (tuesday). Also I threw my study guides out this morning...could not carry that around anymore since it was just not getting used. the hurricane news kind of sealed the deal there. please dont die. hurricane or endless hours in the sand....ummmmmmm,,,,hurricane. duh. also you guys can practice OMM on me all you want when I get back...straight soft tissue tho. Also this is what we are eating when i get back...sicilian pizza, cheese steak, 500 degress burgers and truffle fries times 3 days in a row. oh and primos subs...for breakfast. i feel like im missng things....i am lost without you all though..no joke. i have the song "clique" on my ipod and every time it comes on im like mmmmhhmmmmmmm. listen

Steve: you mak me me laugh. great messages tho. dont die iin the hurricane. also, youuu baaddddd (better?). if you were out here trudging along the desert we really would be a great moon and stars pair. you can eat the heart though. miss you. also i am sweating way way more than you right now. waaahaayyyy mo.

Kim: miss you soooo much. hope you are studying hard so you can teach me everything when i get back. thanks mommy. wink wink. also i want to be drinking wine with yo fam too. tell them they were right...not sure what i was thinking...kidding kidding...but sooo serio...haha also when is tyler coming so he can make me 4 porkroll egg and cheeses? not a joke...miss you woman. when i get back we are spending 99.9 percent time together (plus J plus S mmyep)..like 99.9.

J: gotta abreve duh. my nightly routines are not the same without your "loves" as i leave to retire to my quarters every night back at school. hope you are eating and working out really well right now bc when i get home i am gonna destroy you and be the worst peer pressurer ever. however, i cant wait to watch that dumb amish show with you. it would be a dream come true actually compared to...my...awesome....life...right...meow. ,i want a hug. loves. t t t t spell it with your peas

Konn konn- you probs arent gonna get this but thinking about you a ton. Love you.
Ok gonna go vom now. peace

woah!!!! tara! i just saw the 500 degrees guy post below me. you lucky duck you. this is the first time i have had power since sunday night (it's now wednesday). and i only have power because i came back to the royal palace known as The Village here in the majestic kingdom of voorhees. my parents still have no power in central jersey, it's wild. SANDY seems to be an issue for both of us, and while our sandy was a bit violent...the vulturous satan sand(y) doesn't seem to be faring too nicely either. you vultures leave tara alone, you hear?? (there you go, you're safe now. i got your back. moon and stars. boom). keep the blogs coming, they're A+ -- as for your welcome back party: nachos, cheesesteaks, pizza, primos, nachos, nachos, and pickle backs. also J and K may or may not bake you a cake of which we have arranged you-know-who to pop naked out of. (btw: you-know-who = dr. lee. just in case you didn't-know-who)

Hello Tara, For mentioning our restaurant in your blog, I have arranged for you to win one billion orders of truffle fries at 500 Degrees. Keep up the good work, and when that Africa sun has really melted you to a crisp, we'll also give you loads of free Pepsi to satisfy the need for cold in your mouth. Yours truly, Jim Berger

TARA! Excellent blog (once again)! I can't even imagine the heat and the pain you must be feeling out there. Ugh! But, just keep putting one foot in front of the other. You're a beast and definitely someone I admire for what you're doing in the desert. Have you made friends with any camels? What about other wildlife? The hurricane in Virginia was less than eventful, but I hope your friends and family up north are all okay. But... don't stress over that! You're more than halfway done!!! Outstanding job! Keep thinking about "Sledgehammer" and "Don't Give Up" by Peter Gabriel. And laugh a little when you remember my drunk ass spilling beer on that girls' head! :) Please send my best to Jimmy, Richard Hewitt, Anne-Marie, Joel Meredith, the whole RTP family (Riitta, Sam, Alina, and Avi (is he there?)), and anyone else I forgot! :) Pace yourself and enjoy every second! You're AMAZING!!!!!!!!

Are you sure you weren't bit during the night by a mind poisoning snake??? Don't every joke about spearing a vulture or a crow either for that matter. Bad karma....better be looking over your shoulder today on those dunes..and don't be walking along during the long march in the dark...ha ha am I freaking you out? Figure you can't feel much worse......so psyched you've ordered a camel to the house. Why not? Just add to the confusion and chaos here with all of these animals and reptilian creatures that i had to run a generator for to keep from freezing...oh the things I do. Okay but enough about me...hang in there. Oops hold on just dribbled a bit of lobster mac 'n cheese down my chin...okay all better.....did I mention the homemade apple/carmel tart I made last night with the toasted walnut crust was pretty awesome??? Maybe I shouldn't have mentioned it.....anyway keep drinking water. Many of the bloggers are complaining of nausea and water and the meds seem to help. At least during the long stage you can time it so you are out during the night when it's cooler, no? Well keep pushing....gotta see this to the end now. Love you both.....and Steve.....xxx00x0x0x0x0x0

Tara, watch the electrolytes please. If you cant keep it down with water, get salt tabs in. Heat and dehydration can screw you up real baaaad. Take anti-nausea tabs, be religious with the water and load up on the salt. And eat. I want to copy-paste all of that again. I don't like the sound of the bloody vulture. Focus on the goal here - you need to finish this race and go do the next one. So do everything to prevent, I repeat, PREVENT dehydration and heat exhaustion. And, last but not the least - don't die in the Sahara. Save it for Antartica :) Hugs again. Me - I'm killing myself with Sahara updates and wallowing in tons of self-pity. But then, someday yeah? I'll be back there. So stay safe, I wouldn't mind doing another race (or two) with you. Cheers, Shri

But I hear your allowed to undo shooting star wishes when your out of your home country, so get after that. Thanks and your not too selfish sounds like your dilutions. But as for the swarming vulture sounds so lion king like, except it won't be Timmon and puma running to your rescue but me and your mom with barrels of cold somersby and Danish hot dogs, ill request extra doughy buns and extra long dogs to stick out of those amazing relish mustard ketchup stuffed glorious treats, oh and ill also bring a dessert of well was gunna offer Danish patries but the one your mom and I bought while you were taking your tests at DS shamala I forget the name of your glorious school I had the photo shoot at, anyways Danish patries weren't good so how about some brownies stuffed with Oreo and chocolate chip cookies, say some cold ice cream on the side like uhh creamery style goodness that's colddddd. But damn I want Peter Lugers in my mouth too, I support that push. Oh and in my sandy Bordum finally reading that Sandra brown lethal book u read before one of your other races, it's good totally am glad he is not the mean murderer we thought at first because he sounds manly and hot and wanted his hot boddddd. Good book choice doctor gaston congratulations on the first stages down, you are fantastic. Hope the vom went away and you got that under control. Can't wait to see more pictures you are looking no jokes here great in them all, prof pic potential like whoa. 30 October 2012 02:08 am (GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi

Today can be summed up in 5 points:
HOT
HOT
SO MUCH SATAN SAND...and it was all uphill basically. so sinking sand...all uphill.
HOT
ABSOLUTELY EXHAUSTING
What is so different about this race is that instead of having horrible knee and hip pain or super sore muscles (which they are dont get me wrong)...you are just totally exhausted from the heat and sand. Spent. Cooked. Put a fork in me. And the worst is, that walking...which is that walking, which is typically a good way to rest, does not work here. Walking means you just spend more time in the sun and sand which both just suck all the life out of you. Literally...by 6 hours/1PM ish it is all down hill after that...except not down hill at all but for some reason just continues to be more and more up hill and more and more sand dunes....one of which by the way took me 18 minutes to climb haha which is not that typical but I ran out of water and was ready to collapse and knew it was going to be comical to keep track...yep I think I got passed by 30 people. At that point though all you want to do is finish. Total was 9 hours today....and it is currently 6:30PM (7PM cut off) and people are still coming in. We have two dropped out from our tent and two more are still not in yet...not comforting, however our tent will be quite spacious...
Anyways, I am exhuasted and too tired to wait in line for the computers to read messages. I am sure they are great...keep em coming. I will get to them tomorrow. Also, I am not sure if it is a joke but they placed the bathrooms at the bottom of a dune so you have to climb all the way back up to get back into camp.
Frobes: chaffing everywhere--omg so bad...and in all those bad places. also there is a stefan status here. me..ow.
Jess: I pack and repack my bag at least 4 times every night and morning. Haha I think of you every time.
Mom-just order the smallest size you can---7.5 I guess? go for it. i mean my feet will swell so bigger is better anyways. also we just got interviewed and tried to convince the guy to write at the end that one of us got bit my a scorpion or never showed up...they were afraid youd have a heart attack tho. har har.
peace. sleep. help. as always what am i thinking....and the next two days are apparently worse than today....brutal city. haha i got my picture snapped basically collapsing after a dune climb...hopefully they dont post that but if they do it basically sums up my life. sooo....many....smiles.......
Also jimmy walked all of today except to stage 1 and still placed 30th...gotta love those long legs.

Sounds brutal. Well I guess it\'s everything and more that you\'ve heard about the Sahara. Hang in there. Do your best but don\'t push it too hard. Does appear to be quite a few withdrawals; your tent is down to 7??? You will be fine. Just keep doing what you are doing and it will be over before you know it. 3 down and 3 to go. Come on. You can do it! You know we had the storm of the century. Beach house made it by some miracle. Not those other houses that got wiped out last storm. Sad stuff. NYC really bad. Kelley doesn\'t have school until Monday. A few trees fell in back yard. One on house. But we are okay. Power back today. We are really lucky. Much love xxo. Hang in there. Don\'t let satan win!!!!

29 October 2012 12:31 pm (GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi

First and foremost, Jimmy=mANIMAL!! He placed 14th today. INSANE!! So awesome. He says he is hurting a bit now but something tells me he is going to keep up the pace.

So today...
-we left at 7AM and by 8AM I had a full tan
-by 9AM I sweat out my entire body weight and was covered in white salt (so hot i know)
-by 10AM I was ready to be done...which is actually funny because at this point the top competitors were finishing up. I was almost there at least hahaha yeaaaa right.

To the first checkpoint it was a pretty nice stretch of packed sand. The plan was to walk all of today and get my legs accustomed to this kind of physical madness once again...but being the undisciplined runner that I am I decided to just go with it and run. Besides, I get a natural high from inflicting self pain...not sure why on earth people do these things otherwise. mm ha. I did stick to always following two essential rules...1)if its uphill..always walk, and 2)in the event of deep sand, which I like to refer to as Satan Sand, always walk. This worked out pretty well until a little ways after the second checkpoint when we were routed to a dirt track. Now for the good competitors this would be a very nice break and a chance to stretch the legs and run...but for those who have spent the past month sitting in a chair studying and taking exams, this was just a major tease...knowing I should be running, but just not being strong enough...yet. So instead I played a lovely game of run-walk with the pink flags. For those that don't know, the pink flags are used to line the course--so they are placed anywhere from 10m to 100m apart. I decided I would run two flag lengths, and walk one, and repeat that until I reached the third checkpoint. Here is what is awesome about this game....when you get two flags that are very short distances from each other during the run phase, or a very long walk phase. What is much less awesome about this game is when you get two really long run phases and then a 10m walk phase. Super unfortunate. Oh and the "hard sand" is soft sand but covered in these super flat rocks that when you kick, jingle like coins...and they actually look like coins).....cool Sahara fun fact. Otherwise this is the first time that I actually feel like I am racing through a stereotypical desert...sand, sand, sand, a little bit more sand, and topped off with sand.
Anyways, today was pretty good (biting my tongue here and ignoring the throbbing calves...so yeaa today was totally a breeze). Obviously my body started dying at about the half way and I decided to listen to your request mom and walked the rest of the way. Probably a good idea because it was mostly just straight up Satan Sand (super lame), plus it got crazy hot (equally lame)--someone said 46 degrees C. Mmmyikes.

Some thank yous to past competitors who helped make today a lot easier on myself:
Taki--thanks for teaching me how to navigate the sand and find the hard spots.
Luba-when I got really bored I started talking to the animals. kidding, there were no animals (besides flys). but if there were I would have told them you said hello.
Geoff and Sarah- I just had a delightful post race snack of tuna and parmesean cheese...not sure if the parmesean will be sticking around as long as it did in Gobi since it is already starting to sweat (my dear brother is grossed out haha), but for today it was just perfect. Thanks for teaching me your food snob ways.
Sri-Thanks for the message! Hope you're doing well!!

Mom-I hear you are going to be at the finish line. Be sure and wave us in with a giant american flag. I hear youll make a lot of egyptian friends that way

yo Tara! great effort on the sand and getting day 1 under your belt. it's a cool course and the build up to the long day is tough if the weather stays hot. beware the sand in your shoes and tape feet....blah blah blah. it's much hotter than gobi (no shit!) so watch your hydration. keep up the pace and good luck! all the best ryan

kim texted me earlier and wrote "you so bad". it's not the same, so hurry back. also, did you ever read the book Holes? because im picturing this entire race to take place at Camp Green Lake. stay away from the yellow spotted lizards!!! also stay away from satan sand. also the smell i imagine of your body weight in sweat + white salt + tuna + parmesan cheese gives the anatomy lab a run for its money.

Loving your blogs. Great pics. Keep it up!! Your classes have been cancelled thru Tuesday at least. UMDNJ has declared a state of emergency and they just closed Philly airport. I don\'t think I can get out of here. Airports are all shutting down. Boarded up the beach house. Lucked out and bought a generator. All set up if we need it. That makes me feel better. Storm is making landfall in southern NJ. New York subways and trains stopped running tinite too. Crazy! Let me know about those Solomon shoes. Trying to get things done before we lose power!!! Love you guys xxxoo

Helllooooo. Great description of today, I really feel like I am there with you, except I'm not sinking in satan sand but sinking into my couch. But I think you should just walk when needed, don't want a repeat of last time and having to pop some smikealin. But pictures look pretty, and I'm going to be super jealous of your Greek tanning bod when you get back. I am hoping to catch some rays from sandy the storm rolling in soon, classes cancelled moday and Tuesday, so maybe ill start making posters for stephy to bring to the end, meow. Oh full moon tonight, I plan on spending my night with hybrids and Damon and Stefan, we will have a shot of o neg in your honor. Tell jimmy I say hello and to keep it up, freakin sick. Ok love you stay safe

28 October 2012 01:05 am (GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi

We made it to camp after a very tight and pleasant three hour bus ride (which did not include any trecherous cliffs this time like in Gobi). Most of the ride was a lot of palm trees and along a very large lake (strange, right?) and then all of a sudden we made a turn and it was like hayyylooooo desert! So open and vast and the sky is huge. We are going to be seeing some incredible sunsets/rises and beautiful starry nights. In fact as we rode in, the sun was shining to my right and then the moon was out to my left (Mom and Dad, it reminded me a lot like when we were in South Africa). In fact tonite's sunset, which has already occurred and it is barely 6PM, was big and pink across the whole sky ...it gets dark very early so good thing I decided to bring my good headlamp at the last minute (ahh thank you for that suggestion James). Campsite is right next to the Southern Lake and is in some very soft sand---def don't need my sleeping mat. And it is very very warm. Still sweating and I'm in shorts and a tank top (but then again I sweat a lot). Our tent is #1 this time...me and Jimmy are ecstatic about that!! Basically it just means when we come crashing through the final check point each day we only have to drag our gear and water a very short way, since our tent will always be right next to the start/finish line. I was the first to the tent and picked the spot right at the entrance...apparently it is Jimmy's lucky spot so I traded him it for a buffalo chicken freeze drid meal (fair trade I'd say)--he'll be closer to the scorpions and snakes that way anyways....haha. Tent mates seem great so far, too! Excited to get to know them. Crossing my fingers they are not snorers, but I am prepared with ear plugs this time. And I don't really think it could get worse in terms of PM noise compared to our Gobi tent (you guys were great though--best tent ever). Looking forward to seeing how these ill trained med school legs hold up. Goal: take it easy the first few days and pace it out, especially since Antarctica is just around the corner. OK peace and love.

Stu-All of us Atacama-ers will sit around the fire eating spaghetti bolognese in yours and Fred's honor discussing how very irreplacable you guys are, not to worry. Haha. Also, challenge accepted: that microphone will be mine by the end of the Day 7. Madagascar 2014...think about it.

Belinda-Thanks for all the good wishes!! I feel such pressure now to make my blogs good haha kidding kidding...I only speak the truth. Also, think about Madagascar ohhhhh yeaaaaa!!!

obviously i am going to comment on every single blog. i actually am uber jealous about this whole shenanigans. not really the running or the sweaty snory sleeping arrangements...mainly just the buffalo chicken freeze dried dinners. mmmmmmm. also, you'll be excited to know that you're not missing much back here. for real though. school is CLOSED monday and tuesday AND there's a statewide state of emergency (also in NY, delaware, and PA). there is a massive hurricane plowing through. so if i drown in the storm, let this serve as my final blog comment before i die. miss you, my moon and stars. this is an awfully public forum for romance ;)

26 October 2012 09:03 am (GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi

WOW! Today I was really able to see how nice the hotel is--I think it may be the only part of Egypt where the grass actually is always greener, including a golf course, and a very nice "water park" with two big pools, a wave pool, and a slide. There is even a little patch of beach with sand, although when I return I have a feeling I am never going to want to step foot on sand again...like ever...never ever. However, it will definitely be a nice treat to throw back some beers by the...I mean, relax in the pool next Saturday afternoon once we are finished.

We spent the day doing the last bit of meal planning and compressing everything down to its smallest and lightest form. Although we bought most of our equipment separately this time, we ended up having a lot of the same stuff...great minds think alike I guess. It was particularly amusing when I would flash my new (and the work of an experienced RTP genius I thought) 4-in-1 compass, whistle, light, and mirror multi-tool that was also incredibly lightweight and small, and then Jimmy would be like BOOM and show me the exact same one that he had, too. And then I would be like, heyyy Jimmy check out this awesome new anti-BO, UV protected, cool-knit wicking t-shirt with a half zip (half zip=so clutch)...and he would be like, yeah, cool, check out mine..its got all of that, plus two pockets for my salt tabs. Or he would show me how well his gaiters were sewn on to his sneakers, because he brought them to a shoe repair store and had them stitched perfectly (and I mean not even one tiny grain of sand is getting in there), and then I was like mmhmmm, nope...[(sad face emoji) + Bernice cry: uh huh huh huh (Frobes)]...and then proceeded to sew my gaiters onto my shoes myself...the fingertips still hurt from that. We'll see how they hold up. Good times.

Later, at the equipment check-in we found out that with two races under our belts maybe we actually have learned something. Jimmy weighed in at 7.5kg (16.5lbs) and I was just over 7kg (15.4lbs), not including water. These are the lightest packs we've had thus far!! Can you say uhh yeeyaaa!! It is now comical to think that we both carried about 12kgs(26lbs) at our first race in Atacama...talk about amateur hour. AND, I managed to fit everything INto my pack, unlike in Gobi when I had a very small pack, but about 7 different smaller "attachments" hanging off of it--dumb move since while you run those exterior "attachments" tend to fall off..over..and over..and over again. All in all, apparently 3rd times a charm. #Nailed it.

Anyways, already seeing some familiar faces today and getting excited to get this party started!!
Also, Jena I know you are wondering this...my last real meal consisted of the following: two pieces of bread dipped in EVOO flavored with, yep, rosemary, an appetizer of eggplant parmesean (split with the bro), and penne alfredo with chicken and mushrooms. (There was going to be a pizza for desert..obvs my idea...but Jimmy talked me out of it). Regardless, it was carb city in my mouth and I know you are mad jel. Loves.

Tara Important. There just aren't any Solomon snow cross cs shoes anywhere in a mens size 7.5. on one size chart a 7.5mens was equivalent to a 9 women's but others say 8.5. I can get you a 7 which is either an 8 or 8.5 depending on the size chart. Tell me what to do...and there is like 1 size 7 so I don't have many options.

25 October 2012 07:32 am (GMT+06:00) Astana, Dhaka

Made it to Cairo and all I can say is, compared to China...this trip was a BE-REEEEZE!!!
Oh, except for a small blip that really helped start the travel day off on the right foot. When I realized on the train en route to Newark Airport my sleeping bag was no longer attached to my pack and instead still sitting in my apartment back in NJ (or in the trunk of my car...Kim, it is not your fault haha)...an hour away, in the opposite direction...classic.
Knowing my mother was also on her way to Newark to drop my brother, Jimmy, off, I decided to giver her a casual, little phone call and shower her with the good news. I knew she was going to be SUPER excited to hear, especially since these races have become a full time job for her in regards to helping us with travel arrangements, finding flights, researching equipment, finding doctors when we/I come home in shambles, picking us/me up 15 miles away from the house when we/I (yep it's always just me) realize I no longer want to run back...so basically my sleeping bag dilemma was just one more thing to add to the list. Whoops. But you know what they say, no use crying over a forgotten sleeping bag...(that corny joke was for you Steve). So after a brief conversation, I knew I had gotten myself into quite the pickle (back shot) and was left to spend the rest of my train ride wondering how much the Marriot in Cairo was going to charge me for "borrowing" their sheets and blanket to use as my make-shift bed for the week.
Now...did I mention that my mother is in the running for Mother of the Year? Because low and behold, who is waiting for me when I get to the airport, but Jimmy, my mom, and a...brand...new....sleepinnnggg baaggg!!! That gem of a woman sped twenty miles out to REI and back, all before I even made it to the check-in counter. What's really great about this is that I now have a sleeping bag that doesn't smell like sweaty, fire pit, a scent that has acquired from the past two races and does not seem to want to wash out. Although, I was a bit dissapointed she got a size large and not small...we can't all be perfect though...ha ha...KIDDING, mom. You da woman!
Anyways, that's about all the excitement I can handle for one day. Haven't really seen much of Egypt yet...except for all the brown...lots of sand, buildings, landscape, everything, it's all brown. So much in fact, that I started to wonder if I have ever in my life seen so much brown before in one setting...then I remembered...what's up UMDNJ (badum dum).

If I could reply to this blog with a text, I would obviously add our favorite emoji with the clenched teeth since it probably is my fault that the sleeping bag got left behind (sorry mom!). Although I will say, it's not my fault that I saw it sprawled over your living room couch...who knew it could compact to a little teeny bag! Anyway, mama Gaston totally wins mama of the year (guess my mommy duties are very much lacking at this point in time - I aspire to be like her one day). MISS YOU LOTS! Be safe and have fun...LOVE YOU! BTW...definitely "LOLed" at the brown joke. Ha.
