I want to share my final thoughts on one of the most profound weeks of my life.

The experience that sticks out most to me was when I experienced a 12 mile, extreme runner's high while running through the night by headlamp after running 40 painful, slow miles. Funny enough, I couldn't for the life of me remember the song that ignited the fire inside. I must have listened to it a half-dozen times too. It wasn't until 36 hours later, while laying under the desert stars at 2am, that I woke up to the tune. It took me another 15 minutes to recall the lyrics. I felt the fire again while laying there in my sleeping bag (fortunately not THAT kind of fire).
The song is Times Like These by Foo Fighters. It's not like it's that profound of a song, but for some reason it was the catalyst between me shuffling in full-body pain and running beyond what I thought was possible. Here's a few of the lyrics:

What is profound is that this whole experience made me re-learn how to live, give and love. I'm pretty sure these things are to be done with more passion, risk, exertion, and reckless abandon.
I learned more about God's reverse economy. If you want to receive, give. If you want to be filled up, pour yourself out. You only really live for certain things if you are willing to die to them. I felt like I was the one receiving and being filled up all week.
Even though I had some basic longings throughout the week (i.e. cold beer and bodywork), all of my deeper longings were met. My soul felt filled. It felt like a week-long camping trip with God. One where we hung out, talked a lot, I complained but then we laughed together, I complimented Him on the scenery a lot, I asked him for lots of practical things, and he really took care of me and gave me a profound experience. Like a really good friend would. Or like a really good Dad would.
I know i wouldn't have had the same experience in my routine at home, or if the experience was easy or risk-free. It cost me a lot. It cost YOU a lot. Over 100 people gave over 30,000 of their hard-earned dollars. And I rest in the thought that God will take the bit we all sacrificed and multiply it for great things.
I just read through my blog posts for the first time since I wrote them and they're a bit rough, sappy and vulnerable. The exclamation point must have been stuck because every post is littered with them. I didn't edit them at the time. Just hobbled over after my run and poured out whatever was left. And that's what you got.
I was humbled more than a few times this week, and you guys were a big part of keeping me going. Thank you all for going on this journey with me. I hope you're not left with a picture of my strength. That would be inaccurate. I just signed up, trained and showed up. It was a much bigger strength and support that kept me going and allowed me to accomplish this goal. God orchestrated it and you were a part of it.

I will start with yesterday. the halloween celebration was tons of fun, dancing gangnam style with dozens of koreans and people from a multitude of other countries. They had sodas and candy, and i drank an ice cold pepsi that was nearly life-changing it tasted so good. I had a good rest and woke up ready for the biggest physical battle of my life.
i started the first stage in prayer asking God for tremendous mental fortitude and that he would carry me when i needed it. I thought of Opportunity International loan clients. I thought of you, the person reading this blog, and how youve encouraged me and given your hard earned money to help me RUN4POVERTY. it filled me with purpose.
my plan was to take it very easy and pace myself, as the longest ive ever run before is 26.4 miles. this would be very new territory for me. My big crazy audacious goal was to finish this stage in 14 hours, which would put me across the finish line around 9pm.
I ran through the valley of the whales in great spirits. it was gorgeous and i was overwhelmed with what a big God I serve. the expanse of this desert i have experienced is like one grain of sand compared to his whole creation. Awesome.
it started getting really hot coming in to checkpoint 3 (one thermometer said 118), but i was determined to keep running and not walk. mind you, my running pace out there was a VERY SLOW pace. a brazilian helper at checkpoint 4 called it my granny shuffle, and to be honest it pissed me off! i had that 9 pm goal in my mind, but it seemed to be slipping away as my "running pace" was around 20 min miles. it was still running though!
as i left Checkpoint 4, i climbed a huge gorgeous dune, and found a stray oreo in my snack pocket, and practically made love to it, it tasted so good. i hit the overnight checkpoint extremely exhausted and mentally drained. i thought about staying and resting, but believed that God would sustain me if i endured on. i changed my socks and had a quick meal, and was out of there in less than 30 minutes.
at this point i had been pushing for around 9 hours, and everything was hurting. bad. my 9pm goal looked more like 1130 or 12, IF i could keep the current pace. it felt like any step could have blown out my achiles or knee or something else serious. i had a few burning blisters too. and to make things more interesting, as the sun started to set, a huge headwind started pushing me back. i thought "isnt life like that sometimes?" then my mind quickly went back to grunting "JUST FINISH".
it was disheartening to think there was around 6 hours ahead of me. i didnt know how i would do it, but i was determined to. i ran out of electrolyte powder at CP 6. my pace was waning and my pain was increasing by the step. it was dark and i was running by my headlamp. it was amazing starting running at sunrise and still running at sunset. i couldnt even see anyone in any direction. it was a crazy feeling. It took me over 2 hours to get to CP 7, around 6:45 at night.

Then something indescribable happened. i left CP 7, and was experiencing pain and exhaustion like ive never imagined. A song came on my ipod, and i got a HUGE adrenaline rush, like ive never experienced before. i went absolutely TAZMANIAN DEVIL CRAZY. i started yelling at the top of my lungs " I DIDNT COME THIS FAR TO WALK THE SAHARA!!!" IM THE MAN IN THE ARENA. IM TO BE CARRIED ON WINGS LIKE EAGLES. LETS FINISH THIS!!!! and all kinds of crazy, other-worldly guttoral screams, profanity, prayers and cries.
my pace increased to around 10 minute miles, and i felt almost no pain. i thought, "this is great, but im afraid of bonking early as ive still got 12 miles to go and anything could happen." then the adrenaline kicked again "NO FEAR!!" LETS FINISH THIS!!! i pushed and pushed and maintinaned my lightning pace. KEEP UP WITH THIS GRANNY SHUFFLE MR. BRAZIL!!"
i blew into CP 8 with no water, refillled and screamed out of there hooting and hollaring. i think i freaked out the people in the CP. I KEPT THIS PACE FOR 12 miles... 2:20 minutes!!! it felt like someone elses body, seriously. if i slowed down, EVERYTHING WOULD HURT. if i cranked it up, the pain went away and i would start grunting and screaming and beating my chest. i was weeping at times. i felt like a warrior screaming into battle. yelling quotes and bible verses from my guts. seriosly, someone would have put me in the mental tent if they heard me. i just kept chanting all kinds of crazy things. i passed 6 competitors, who all thought i was insane.
i crossed the finish line PRECISELY at 9pm and almost threw up. 52 miles in 14 hours. my heart rate was through the roof and i couldnt see straight. i had accomplished my goal. i left it all out there on the course. i could barely form sentences.
i barely crawled into my tent and passed out. didnt even blow up my air mattress. suprisingly i feel amazing this morning. nothing hurts. i seriously am a new man.
ive got a few dozen competitors breathing down my neck to use the computer, so im off. ill write a little more tomorrow after all of this sinks in. I just found out that i finished #29th overall with a time around 39 hours 22 minutes. i thought i was dreaming to think about coming in below 50 hours, so i crushed my time goal.
thank you all for sharing this journey with me. your prayers and well wishes, i hope you all have realized by now, were life changing.

now im off to rest up before my 3k run in front of the pyramids... my confidence is high that ill knock that one off :)

Nicely done compadre. While I was always confident that you would finish the race with flying colors, it has been inspiring to read about the challenge and the consequent transformation. You understand better than most now why the spiritual man leaves everything that defines him and goes to the desert to discover what he truly is. Parabéns. PS. Stop hating on the Brazilians yo.

Deyl, you're amazing!! I'm just awestruck but what you've accomplished. Any time something seems hard or 'impossible', I'm going to remember this blog, remember what you've managed to do and push forward knowing that our limits are so far outside of what we often think they are. Deyl! I have been dying to get your update! First of all, you're amazing! I am so proud that you set out to do this, trained, endured, and totally succeeded. Deyl, I just hung onto every word you wrote. You rode in on the wings of an Eagle: thank the good Lord for giving us strength and those words in Is 40, as I mentioned to you early on, are warrior words and special to me also. They are a key to how someone in such a rough place can get through it, as you have. What a wonderful example you are to everyone fortunate to know you!

You guys must have powerful prayers, because I think they were answered last night. Even though I only had about 12 hours to recover for todays stage, I woke up feeling amazing and with my appetite back. What a blessing! Lots of people were hurting yesterday (even the camels didn't make it!! Seriously!), so before I went to bed I spent a bunch of time giving thanks for all the ailments i haven't had to face. And I also had the realization that as hard as any day is out here for me, Opportunity International loan clients literally have harder circumstances to endure every day. It was good to get some perspective.
I ran from the beginning and found a really good pace that i was able to keep all day. I finished with a time around 5:40 in 25th place. But best of all, i felt amazing all day. I was running alone most of the day, and had lots of time to think, pray and give thanks. My body felt fresh and strong. I feel some blisters and soreness, for sure, but I am in awe at how much more i can do than i thought was possible.
I had tears running down my face here in our dusty cybertent as I read more than 60 new messages of encouragement from you all.Ive got SUCH amazing friends, community, and an especially amazing wife. Paige, you are a SAINT and I am so grateful for you and your belief in me. you all talk about me giving, but i feel like im the one on the receiving end. ive never felt so loved and supported, and i dont know that ive experienced such purpose. it is amazing experiencing life in such a raw way. Thank you all for being a part of it.
i seriously laughed and smiled thinking of summer and all of your guy's kids in their halloween outfits today! I am going to be a jack o lantern tonight by making a face with electrical tape on my bright orange jacket.
Tomorrow is going to further push my limits with a 50 mile + day. As I heard in a Wyclef song today "you gotta have muscle for the hustle." Ill definitely need more than that, so thanks in advance for your prayers. Much love to you all and thanks for all the corona offers :)

Hi Son,
The photos from stage 5 look beautiful,. I wonder if the desert is as quiet as it looks. I wonder what music choices helped you through the 50 miles. You looked strong and confident in the photos you were in. We are all anxiously and impatiently waiting to see some results. Don't forget our signature move across a finish line....a cartwheel...but please don't rip a groin at the end doing something stupid! I know you wanted this 50 miler...I hope it took you to the place you wanted to travel inside yourself. REALLY REALLY hard day. All of you that said i'm absolutely insane for doing this? I thought about you today and how right you are. I dont know why anyone would do this!
I woke up at the usual time (4:30am) feeling like I was in a bad car crash. I felt better after I got the blood moving, but had an upset stomach and no appetite. It was supposed to be the hardest terrain of the entire race today, so I was planning on taking it easy and walking the tough stuff. I ended up walking 90% of the course today, other than when i would dash behind a rock with my toilet paper, which happened consistently throughout the almost NINE hours I was out there. I've never worked out for nine hours straight, and I hope I never have to again. Oh wait, i get to do that again thursday :)
I hope to kick this little bug tonight and feel fresh tomorrow. The terrain was extremely difficult, with huge dunes, almost 27 miles of powder soft sand, and for the most part stifling heat. The best moment of the day was jumping into a natural spring at a monastery at the halfway point. Only shower all week! I had to dig really deep to keep pushing through the intense fatigue for so long. I spent a lot of time praying Isaiah 40 "they will run and not grow weary,they will walk and not be faint." I really hope I can run tomorrow as its extremely difficult to be on my feet for so long.
My spirits are a lot higher now that im back to camp and after reading your comments and emails! not many blisters yet, but might lose a few toenails. Any fundraising updates? Paige and Summer, are you getting my emails? I think about you 3 all the time!!
Off to rest... i have to (get to!) get up and do this all over again in 12 hours. it sure is gorgeous out here.

Hey Buddy! By the time you get this you will be done with another probably very hard day. You are not crazy for doing this. You are doing this because you can and for those who can't. Even if you weren't raising huge sums of money for an amazing cause everyone would be so proud of you. Stick to your plan and remember to hydrate no matter how crappy you feel and set small goals for yourself along the way and reward yourself when you reach them. You have to play mind games with yourself. Don't think about what you just did or what you are about to do, just focus on what you are doing at that moment! You are a well trained machine. Keep it up bud!

Deyl, we had a very large tree fall in front of our house as a result of Hurricane Sandy. The tree completely missed the house but fell in the driveway. Steve and I spent the morning in the cold rain sawing it apart and dragging the pieces down the driveway. At one point in the middle it seemed like we'd never get through it, we were really wishing we had electricity (and a chain saw) and our cold soaking wet clothes were tempting us inside. My day challenge was nowhere near as difficult as yours (and for the record we have a clear driveway now) and it only lasted a morning (and not 7 days), but I wanted to tell you we're thinking of you and hope that in the middle when it's tough you stop, take in your view, remember your extreme ability to do this, the people who support you, and your ultimate goal. Thinking of you and proud to know you.

- I keep thinking about Jesus in the desert fasting for 40 days and 40 nights. He understands and knows how you are feeling to the core. I think it's rad that you get to tangibly experience, in this way, a piece of what He endured. Lean on Him and he'll carry you through!
Jesus, Moses, Joseph, David, Paul, Deyl Kearin- they were all tested and tried by the wilderness to serve the Lord for God's glory!

You can do much more than you think you are capable of. You've told me that since I was a little girl and I think you are teaching a whole lot of people that through what you're doing. A few years ago my husband did an Ironman triathlon while I was pregnant with our second child and had a 3-year-old at home (sound familiar?). While it was challenging for all of us, the satisfaction at the finish line was like nothing we've ever experienced. And he holds that title forever. So from one endurance family to another (though you're WAY crazier), I can't wait for all four of you to be stoked on your accomplishment together. Go Deyl!

Truly amazing you are!! Every day, for the last week actually, I think about you and your family many times over. This 6 days you are in the middle of must be unbelievably difficult. I remember with each baby born, there is a point where I feel like running away and having someone else take over! I am nearly sure this is what you are experiencing. The intensity of his race only to read about it is unreal- to be doing it , well- remarkable. I Don't know if this will help- but I hope it will. I read every book under the sun about natural childbirth and empowering oneself to move through the intensity. Only one mantra stuck with me in the most effective way. It was this. Every time a contraction hits, remember you are one step closer to meeting your baby. So, when all the intensity in the world seemed to be upon me- I just remembered the profile picture of our little one at 20 weeks and then, pushed on- literally. So, breath to a similar mantra with each 1/2 hr that passes. "with each step, I am closer to helping delete poverty and helping myself achieve a new PR!". It has to get really intense for it to mean something. That's life at its best. The limits always are the most celebrated. Sending prayers I healing your way and making a donation tonight!! Wow...what a tough day son! We've all been very worried about you. I read Brian's blog today...pretty depressing. I tried to give him some realistic encouragement. Nothing really tough comes easy. It doesn't sound like you could have prepared better unless you were a camel. I'm sure you know your limits but remember its not worth having serious consequences. The fact that you have sacrificed so much during your six months of training and gained so much support for OI is a great inspiration to all of us. I'm proud of you if you come home tomorrow. Sorry we're figuring out how to be good hometown support! This race is all about pushing through limits. That means when your beyond the end of yourself, you go further anyways. Your starting to find your limits and now it's time to push through them. There is huge reward awaiting you. This race is spiritual and not physical. DOn't be fooled. Our mind will tell you it's physical and play tricks on you, but it's just between you and God out there. Meditate on Ephesians 6:12 For our struggle is NOT against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places". You, my friend, are running in such a way by honoring God in your pursuit and in the trenches. The prize is not at the end of this finish line, but it will be even greater. Keep running! :)

Wow. Today was extremely tough physically, but mentally i was really strong. It was a 26 mile stage and there was tons of heat, incline, soft sand, and more heat. I was able to run around 80% of it (if you consider 17 minute miles running)! I feel really good about how I finished though. I took the same strategy as yesterday and started slowly, got my rhythm, and then picked it up through the day. at checkpoint 1 I was in 37th position but I was able to cross the finish line with my buddy Brian Townsend in a time of 6:12 in 18th place again. And yes Josh, thats an objective number.
My pack felt twice as heavy and I felt a lot more fatigue. My spirits stayed really high as every time i felt pain, i thought "this is why i came!" It also really motivated me to think about the funds that are being raised for people in need. If there's any way any of you can parachute in a gift like in The Hunger Games, I'll take an ice cold corona with a lime please.or a massuese. thanks in advance
Now im 50 miles in, about 1/3 the way done, but i think probably only 10% of the actual race is done as the first two days are the easiest. Tomorrow is suppposed to be a very tough course with lots of sand dunes and thick sand. My body is crazy sore and i'm barely walking. but my spirits are soaring and i think that will help carry me.
Can someone give me a fund raising update? When I left, we were at $22,000 and I realized that is only 110 kilometers. I will cross my 110th kilometer tomorrow! I need some big money in to keep me going!

Dude, you're a freakin animal...and you had better keep it up. Chumash warriors experienced a similar spiritual journey called, "hwen e me barn ay." Few could handle it, but those who could abide, became legends of the hidden temple. Nickelodeon later made a show about it; you may have seen it, I don't know.
Have you seen any cool mirages yet? Irie. How about some freestyle walking on the dunes? Maybe if you get really tired tomorrow you can mix in some method grabs to lighten the mood and keep it "fresh;" just trying to help.

The first song I heard when I turned on my ipod around mile 8 was tom petty’s ‘runnin down a dream’. It felt appropriate as today was a dream day.
I didn’t sleep too well, partially because I haven’t been working out as much so my body wasn’t tired. That was about to change big time. The biggest surprise was that one of my best friends in the world sent his wife tammy and her friend to see me off at the starting line. They flew 4 hours from dubai and drove 3 hours into the desert just to cheer me on. How amazing is that? It pumped me up beyond belief and kept me going strong all day. Seriously, how amazing are they?? They are incredible friends and I am overwhelmed with gratitude, once again.
The first hour of running I spent praising God for the beauty of His creation and for the ability to run and in prayer. I went out pretty slow and steady and the first hour or two wasn’t too hot and the terrain was easy. The last thing I wanted to do was blow it out in the first hour of a 7 day event. After checkpoint 2, it started getting very hot and the terrain got more difficult. I was able to keep up my pace, and even increase it some. I was still feeling great at hour 3 and was able to keep running in over 100 degree weather on some steady, sandy inclines. I wish I had more words to describe the beauty.
I ended up with a top 20 finish with a time around 4:41. That’s the longest time ive ever run in my life. I crossed the finish line with a big smile and in disbelief at my good placing. I'm not going to let it go to my head, as it’s a long race and the days are just going to get harder. Thank you for all your prayers! I felt lifted up all day. Im super grateful for no blisters, chafes or injuries. The food is tasting good and the pack is getting a little lighter.

Everyone is so friendly and interesting. Excitement is high as everyone is full of energy and ready to hit it hard tomorrow morning. Weather doesnt sound too hot from the reports, so im hopeful that Ill be able to keep a good pace. I feel ready, strong, and full of purpose. Im so thankful for the opportunity to do this. I can't wipe the smile off my face! we'll see how long it lasts right!?

In reading a lot of past blogs and talking to other RTP veterans, I've heard a lot of them recommend having 1 or 2 food "indulgences" each day. I like the thought behind it, but I'm struggling to think of good ideas that are practical to carry. I thought I might open up a the discussion to see what other people might be bringing as food treats to look forward to during the competition.
A few I've thought of are:
Lays salt and vinegar potato chips
snickers bar
skittles
other candy bars
flask of rum (maybe a little too excessive)
Any other good ideas?

I did RTP Jordan in May , and went to the market in Amman before the start and bought olives, fresh mint and cucumbers to take with me during the race. The cucumbers went on day 1, but the olives were priceless at the end of the day, shared amongst my wonderful tent mates. The mint lasted well in the dry heat and was great added to my water. I get tired of sports drink so relied mainly on Endurolytes caps for salts. I also relished my beef jerky, next time I'd take more, and hot chocolate for the evening and instant soup for dinner time. Like others have said, I found my appetite was not great so tasty things are good, and try and eat a big breakfast of muesli or oats. I used Expedition foods and it was fine. Good luck, you will love it!

You will crave salt when you are out there so salty chips are good. Some people bring salami and cheese for a treat. Some people bring a small bottle of wine for the end. Best of luck.

Anything sweet, salty, spicy, savory. Eventually during the race, your body will completely refuse one of these tastes. Good plan to have something different to fall back on. After day 4 I couldn't stand another camping meal.
I think total for Gobi I had about 16,000 calories with me. Next race I'll probably bring less, say 15,000 or so. I was really surprised at how little I actually wanted to eat.
Salt tabs are hugely important. I set the timer on my watch and took one every 45 minutes I was on the course.

Hi Deyl,I would go with the salty chips. I never eat them normally but in all three of the events I have done have absolutley craved them along with a cup of soup...yes even in Sahara loved the soup. Very light weight to and you can crush the chips so pack really well. Enjoy the journey it is amazing Sandy

Hi Deyl, I crave salty foods in the desert, so my favorite item is crushed up crisps (salt and vinegar is a great option). Some competitors bring salami and cheese, though I'm not sure how the food items withstand the heat. One friend brings a couple of cans of tuna (though heavier). My other "go tos" are beef jerky, sachets of chicken noodle soup, instant noodles, Snickers bars and hot chocolate sachets for the evening. Hope thing starts the ball rolling! Cheers, Alina

Less than a month and I'm feeling ready! I wish the race were this weekend.
It's been a great couple months of training since I last posted. Since I got back from Costa Rica, I've upped my mileage and have been putting in a lot of miles on the local beaches in the thick sand. Santa Barbara has some great stretches of uninterrupted beaches at low tide. Yesterday I ran 20 miles on the same stretch of sand. Gorgeous. I've also been getting in at least one Bikram Yoga (hot yoga) per week.
Training in Death Valley has been the most grueling and subsequently the most helpful of all my training. My fellow competitor and great friend Brian Townsend and I have done a few trips out there, camping in the dirt and running the Mesquite dunes during the 115-120+ degree heat. The heat was relentless, and really got me focused on hydration and electrolytes.
Fundraising has been a lot of fun. My website/video is at www.run4poverty.org. Let me know what you think! We're already up to 12,000 USD and I hope to exceed my goal of 50,000 USD by race day.

I was about to sign up for this race 5 years ago, but an injury knocked me out of it. Starting my own business and having my first child have kept me pretty pre-occupied since then, but the thought of this race has always been in my mind. My friend Brian Townsend (also a competitor in this race) recently talked me into it, and my wife was 100% behind me. No excuses.
I started with a good fitness base, but I've never done much mileage (only 1 marathon). I upped my training to about 40-45 miles a week in May/June, transitioned to sand running, and now I'm hitting it hard in Costa Rica in July. Although it's a very different kind of heat, 90+ degrees is probably more helpful than 65 degree beach runs in Santa Barbara. It's also been helpful to try out several different electrolyte powders, shoes, music, hydration systems, etc.
Surfing has been delightful as a cool down exercise on my off days. I know I'll be dreaming of that kind of cleansing out in the desert!
