Another long day. 9 hours, but a longer distance, including some incredible sand dune and a dip in a natural spring, beside a monastery. Long story.
My pulled thigh has all but stop this from being a running race for me and more of a trot and walk. Nonetheless, I am committed to finishing the race.
Today we had brutal heat, 46c, which made the middle section slow and difficult.
A special call-out to Matt and Lauren, your tunes kept me going today.
The landscape is unearthly at time and stunning to see. I sure the web-site photo give you an opportunity to experience it from a far, and hope see I am still hanging in.
Thanks for the words of encouragement.
Sorry for the jilted message, but I am typing on a mini computer in the dark, and I am tired.
Time for bed.
Love to Vera, Josh, Matt and Lauren.
Also, a call out to Brenda and the boys.
Another day, another 40km.
Jeff

Stage one done, in just over 6 hours. Pull a thigh muscle in Stage 1 on a sand dune climb, so I couldn’t run through the deep sand in stages 2 & 3, nonetheless a good finish time, just 3 hours behind the leader, about mid pack. Not bad for an old guys. Suffering from some dehydration, and resulting muscle cramps, but will be OK Day 2. Tomorrow I’ll drink a lot more water on the course, enough so I pee on the course, which I didn’t today. Feet are good, so that’s a bonus.
Thanks to everyone for the kind wishes on my blog.T hey mean a lot, especially when I am so tired.
It’s a surreal world out here, in so many way. From sleeping in the sand, not be able wash after the race, and eating food out of a bag. It is also extremely beautiful, in a lunar sort of way. Like nothing else I’ve ever seen or will likely will see again.
My time is up. Love to my family. Miss all.
Jeff

Of late, I have been asked by many people two questions with respect to the race. Why? And, am I scared? Yes, I am scared, scared of not finishing. Scared of letting myself down. I have put so much into preparing for this race that not finishing it would be a devastating event for me, and one I cannot dwell on as I count down the final days to the start.
I am anxious to start the race. I'm tired of second guessing my choices for comfort and nutrition. Is my pack too heavy, do I have too much or too little food, how many pairs of socks should I take and so on. I know I have made some good decisions and some bad decisions: I simply don't know which is which, at this point.
The answer to the question - Why?. I believe every once in a while that it's healthy to take on a goal bigger than ourselves. Something so challenging that at first glance it appears near impossible. Something that takes us beyond our breaking-point to a place not tested by many, at least not by choice.
I will be updating my blog daily during the race, sharing my experience as best I can. In turn, you'll be able to send me words of encouragement, please do.
My next update will be from Sahara on the eve of the race.
Thanks to one and all for your words of encouragement, past and present, they mean a lot to me.

As I near the end of my training regiment, I am feeling the impacts of eight long months of training has had on my body. I’m tired and sore. Over the past eight months, I have ran countless hours and kms, much in 35C-40C+ heat thanks to a hotter than usual Toronto summer, most of it alone. I am looking forward to the company of other in the Sahara, like minded people with the same goal in mind - to finish the race.
I wake up and go to sleep thinking about the weight of my pack, the type of food to take, the size of my shoes (1 or 2 sizes larger, or not at all) and the extras. The necessities versus the luxuries, which would be considered the latter on any other trip. I am determined to get my pack to under 7 kilos, including water. The packing and unpacking, additions and deletions continue and I am sure they will until I leave the hotel room in Cairo for the bus ride to the start.
I am often asked if I feel ready for the race. I don't know. I have never taken on a race of this length and duration, especially in such harsh conditions. I believe, I have trained hard and planned well, but only ‘sands of time’ (couldn’t help myself) will be the judge of both.
My fellow participants, especially first timers, may get some encouragement, as I did, by watching the CBC Nature of Things documentary on long distance running called The Perfect Runner at http://www.cbc.ca/natureofthings/blog/chasing-the-perfect-runner.html In brief, it suggests humans were made to run long distances over protracted periods of time. Its in our genes, supposedly.
Let hope they are right.

If you are new to ultramarathons, as am I, then I would recommend the book Relentless Forward Progress, by Bryon Powell and the accompanying website - iRunFar.com. Both contain helpful advice and tips for new ultramarathoners.
