I made it!
I can't believe I came 5th in the longest, toughest stage of the race. Actually I can believe it. Yesterday I pushed myself to the absolute limits. I fell across the line in at 6:05pm after 11hours 05 mins and 86kms of intense racing.

The day started off as usual, woke up starving and sore had my powerbar and got my kit on for the last day of desert racing. I was feeling quite patriotic, so slapped on a thick layer of green and gold zinc to my nose and blistered lips and was ready to race (to the amusement of a couple of the South Korean competitors who mistook me for an Avatar)

A big thankyou to everyone for all the emails and messages of support I've received, it really powered me on through extreme heat and tough terrain. Without a doubt yesterday was the most painful, lonely day I've ever enjured so knowing I had everyone's support lifted me greatly, In fact at some points I almost felt like a man possessed. Cheers.

As I'm writing this the last competitors are crossing the line almost 28 hours since the stage started.

I've got one single ration of food (a strawberry porridge) to get me through the next day and a half but I could'nt care less, I've slayed the beast. I'll be trying to do as little as possible until tomorrows finale - where we'll finally cross the FINISH line after short run past the Great Pyramids of Giza, where we'll be met with cold beers and pizza.

Until that heavenly time comes, I'll just be sweating it out in camp with a grin from ear to ear knowing that I've given it my abolute all!

So very proud of you, Joey!

01 November 2012 12:38 pm (GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi

I woke up this morning stinking, starving and ridiculously sore, a common trend for this holiday to the Sahara.
BUT, thankfully once I was out on the course my body held up and I took advantage of the morning clowd cover to smash out the kms. I had to be careful not to snap my running t-shirt putting it on as the salty/sweaty residue has made it stiff as a board

Probably pushed a bit harder than I should of today and as a result my feet swelled up pretty bad and my ankles causing quite a bit of discomfort, but hey it is race.

Anyway I'm getting out of this cyber tent as its a thousand degrees but I'd like to thank everyone for their well wishes (I only just figured how to read them then) It's given me the lift I needed!.

Tomorrow is going to be without a doubt the toughest day of my life, but I couldn't be more ready... If I can't run I'll walk, if I can't walk I'll crawl..... Whatever it takes!

Try my style of holiday next time Joe, it´s a bit easier on the body. You´re doing very well as always, very proud of you, don´t hurt yourself thought just get through to that finish. In La Rochelle they had Bear Gryls book I gave you, so I read it at night. His SAS training reminded me of what you are striving for too. Keep up the good work son, I will toast you with a good Rioja tonight, see you have done four parts now. Mum gave me the site so can follow you now, love Dad.

On paper, today’s stage was rated the toughest. I personally found it a lot easier than the previous day, even though we did have to navigate over some massive vertical walls of sand and countless dunes. It’s amazing how much a difference a slight breeze can make. Although CP3 to CP4 was basically a burning hot furnace that I only just made it out of alive.

All in all though I had fun out there today slugging my guts out and was stoked to cross in 14th place for the stage!

One marathon to go tomorrow and then on to the big bopper 86km stage 5 *gulp*.

30 October 2012 12:17 pm (GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi

Cruised through to CP1 without a problem, from there the on the heat just got hotter and hotter. I spent a little longer at each of the checkpoints to give my back a bit of a rest and also get some additional water than the mandatory 1.5L as I found myself running out well before CP2 and 3. My shoulder has seriously had it, although as each day passes, so does the weight of my pack.

Apart from the suffocating heat (which had to have been over 40 degrees) and my aching shoulders the scenery out on the course today was awesome, It had a bit of everything – Massive rolling sand dunes (which I had the joy of running down and unfortunately also back up) beautiful cliff-top views and wide open spaces.

Another tough day awaits tomorrow and I can’t wait to hook in.

Your mental, good luck over the next couple days and take it easy on the curries!

29 October 2012 12:55 pm (GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi

Stage 1 complete! Welcome to the Sahara Desert, and what a welcome it was.

That was by far the hardest 38km stage I’ve ever run/walked/crawled but that’s what I signed up for. It was tough but I had a ball. Had to keep pinching myself as I ran along, looking around.
Temperature here is a barmy 38 degrees and rising (and that’s in the shade of the finishing tent).
The scenery here is amazing… Nothing but wide open spaces, I’ve never felt smaller and more insignificant in my life.

Just had a beef curry for lunch, tasted exactly the same as last night’s spaghetti Bolognase but I’m 800 calories better for it!
Running through the soft sand with my 11+kg pack felt like about double that for the last 10km but I plan on lightening the load by at least half a kg before tomorrow’s start.

I’m off to recover in the shade of my tent with 8 other destroyed lads.

That’s Joe McCann, reporting live from Africa….Until next time!
