Well how fast has that come around, has anyone else got the ground rush feeling yet?? I am currently living in Kuwait, now i know what you are thinking, what a great opportunity to train for such an event, right! WRONG, it is true that Kuwait is very hot, dusty and does have desert, however there are no sand dunes to train on, the only hill is on a ridge line which is littered with military ordnance and old left over fencing from the Gulf war in 1991. When i started training for this event it was not to bad, a nice run along the ridge with no weight, just distance. However when the summer months kicked in and the temperatures started to reach 50+ and dropping to 40+ at night, no matter how hard you try to train in the heat and get the miles in it was just impossible. The other great drawback was the good old A/C, everywhere you go it is a constant 20-25 degrees! so no heat training gained there. Throughout this summer in particular we have been hit with an increased amount of sand/dust storms. Again, good training in those conditions, WRONG, the dust is that fine that the buff clogs in minutes and your eyes dry out that fast that you need a space helmet to prevent any dust getting on your face. Because of the combination of Heat and Dust (as well as trying to fit work and home life in) Training had to carry on in the gym on the treadmill! 2 hour runs feel about 10 hours when all you've got to focus on is a TV with no sound and arabic subtitles! However now the temperatures have dropped and i can train in the late afternoon in the low 40s' i feel i have done as much as i could given the circumstances. There is no doubt that hopefully i will not feel the heat too much, but never say never!
Apart from the above, i feel i am ready for the event. Like most other bloggers have said, getting the food weight/nutrition ratio right is a nightmare and also the "do I...dont I take it" thoughts that are constantly going through your head. Well there is only one way to tell if its going to work and that is on the event. So, bring it on, good luck and see you there...
