Hadley's Day:
Yes it is! It's been an incredible and painful journey but well worth it! I made it through the 95k just fine - we came in at 12hrs41mins and 6th overall. My chicken legs carried me farther than I thought. We ran together almost the whole stage, just stopping to walk for steep uphills and check points. It's amazing what your body can do! Will fill everyone in on all the details when I return - this resting day is killing me - it's roasting and there are a million flies - get me back to civilization!
Erica's Day:
I wasn't allowed to start the long day by the doctors so instead spent the day as a volunteer. It was actually a great experience and made the best of a bad situation for me really! Today has been endless, really hot and no breeze and everyone smells and wants to go home! Oh how we can't wait for the 2km walk through the pyramids to the finish line tomorrow!
So the journey that we've been planning for almost a year is almost at an end - it was a very different experience for both of us but one we will never ever forget. Thanks again to all our friends, colleagues and family for everything. Hope you've enjoy keeping track us!
See you when we're clean and recovered!! E & H xx

Greetings from the desert!
Let us start this blog by telling you all just how dirty and sandy and smelly we are - nothing we have taken to the desert is making it home, it's all going in the garbage!
Here's how today has gone...
Hadley's Day -
Had my best day yet (not sure how)! I didn't feel well this morning so wasn't sure how it would go and by the time I got to the start line I was ready to run. Caught up with Katia after 5 or 7k and enjoyed running the rest of the way together. Parts of this place are so isolated - it definitely helps running with someone. I came in joint first lady and joint 4th overall - far better than I would have ever dreamed! Not sure how tomorrow will go...just need to put one foot in front of the other and do it over and over and over again. I'm excited it's here and soooo looking forward to getting to that finish line (hopefully I get there)!
Feet and back are bloody and blistered but at least I'll have some good battle wounds!
Please keep the emails and blogs coming! They really help!
Love to everyone at home (and my adopted home)!
Erica's Day - I'm in a slightly better mood writing this today... I have stayed on at camp and had a fantastic Jeep ride to today's camp including having tea with some locals and standing at the finish line to watch Hadley storm through! I didn"t have that luxury the last few nights having come in so late so it's been really nice to do. I'm resting and stretching today so despite not being in the running for a medal now, I have decided that I'm going to try and do tomorrow. It's the 100km stage and I doubt I'll complete a quarter of that before my leg seizes up again but figure I'll give it all I've got!!!! Grant love you and see you at the finish line!!!
Laters. Hadley & Erica xx

You are both in the midst of an amazing real-life adventure! I am blown away! Hello All,
Sorry to dissapoint everyone out there but I'm out (Erica) - the desert officially beat me today. Unfortunately my itb got so bad and I was so slow walking that I missed the cutoff they set and have been dis-qualified. Not sure if I will start again tomorrow but if not I can stay on as a volunteer to help around camp and stuff. Grant I'm so sorry, I really wanted to do this for you after all the support you've given me through all my training - you're the best manager ever!!
I'm glad to report that Hadley is doing fantastically well, she came second to the Italian lady again today - she's going to catch her one of these days!! She's asleep right now getting rested for tomorrow hence why I am writing.
Will write again tomorrow to update how things are going - thanks for everyones support and messages and again I'm sorry to let eveyone down. Sista... I needed you there walking by my side : )
Sand & Kisses, Erica.

Hadley and Erica,
What a memorable adventure. The photos of the Race are fantastic including a video clip of Hadley yawning at one of the early morning starts. Thank you Hadley for wearing a red hat and green watch, makes it much easier to find you in the sea of white. I know you aren't pausing much to look at fossils but I hope you can overcome the elements enough to marvel at that landscape - and appreciate how green home is! Imagine building pyramids in those conditions. Good luck on the last leg tomorrow Hadley, we're all cheering you on.
Much love to you both, Mom

Erica, sorry to hear about your injury. You both are great inspiration given the level of physical and mental toughness that is required to run at your level. I can only imagine what it's like to run on sand through a scorching desert. Keep it up RIDDLE!
Posted On: 06 Oct 2010 02:36 pm
Erica - So basically you did 3 marathons in 3 days...in the desert...you are my hero. I think you are amazing! Don't be sorry cause you pushed so hard. Can't wait to catch up when you get home. xoxo Liv
Posted On: 06 Oct 2010 12:15 pm
Erica - It is understandable that you feel disappointment but you should feel pride and satisfaction with what you have achieved. Success is not measured only by reaching the finishing line but more so by committing to something and sparing no effort to achieve that goal. You get a capital E for effort and that's success in our eyes. Enjoy the rest of the trip with joy and satisfaction for a job well done. Love....Tante Ginette and Uncle John xxxxx

Hi,
Fantastic effort both of you: but now the big one coming up.
For chrissakes (H) forget the Italienne - she doesn't matter; forget all the others, just concentrate on yourself, on the legs, on the feet, where you put them, how they hit the deck. It's just you and the landscape: breathe it, absorb it, become a part of it, and (try to) enjoy it.
Fortune favours the brave: allez les femmes !
Posted On: 06 Oct 2010 10:50 am
Erica, no need to be sorry. You should be celebrating what you have achieved – it’s fantastic and so much more than all of us are capable of (although Hutch reckons he did 6 marathons in 3 days once. We pointed out they’re now called Snickers). The whole office is proud to say you’re one of us.
Hadley. Phenomenal. ‘Nuff said!
Posted On: 06 Oct 2010 09:12 am
Erica - you have done a fantastic job, you should be proud of yourself. I can't imagine even spending an hour out there, let alone as long as you have managed. you are a legend! x
Posted On: 06 Oct 2010 08:13 am
Erica, you have done such a fantastic job, don't be hard on yourself for an injury you can't control. You're an inspiration to us all. Richard, Samantha and I are all so proud of what you have achieved. xxxxx
Posted On: 06 Oct 2010 07:50 am
I hope there was lots of swearing and cursing too....That's the only way I can imagine you wandering across the desert! Just like old times...
Well done you for going for it. I think you'll find you're in the top 1 of 1% of people. You went for it. That's what matters.
Best to both of you
Chris

Morning ladies, Erica don't be so hard on yourself! I'm too much of a weed to have even thought about doing it let alone doing it, you have done unbelievably well, absolutely brilliant. Put the feet and ITB's (no idea what they are) up and rest them tesco's.. Keep going Hads! Fantastic - catch the Italiano - especially after what she said about you...
Posted On: 06 Oct 2010 06:58 am
Well done Erica, youve done so well to even attempt something like this, dont be hard on yourself, everybody is behind you up here, we couldnt do what youve done. Have a rest and take in the scenery, maybe have a ride on a camel. well done again. Hadley, you keep going and catch that miss fanjita, you can do it!! xx
Posted On: 06 Oct 2010 06:41 am
Fantastic effort Erica - you should be so proud of what you achieved.. Time to give the muscles a well deserved rest!
Hads - keep pushing! You can win this.. I only wish I'd lent you my walking poles before you left.

Erica -- so sorry to hear about your injury. Now Hadley will have to bring it home for both of you. Some top-secret reconnaissance says the Italian is getting tired and anticipates an American to overtake her in the not-too-distant future...
May the wind be at your backs.
Hugs & wags,
Kate, Claudio, Pippo & Willoughby

Erica- did you know that bees and dogs can smell fear? Did you know Erica can smell fear and stare it right in the face? I am so very proud of my big (well, little) sister. I cant wait to tell Dani what her favorite aunt did and no doubt she will look up to you as a perfect role model. Mazal Tov on your amazing achievement!

Erica, just saw your status. You have done such an amazing job with training and the race.... You've done better than most ( I know I wouldn't have the guts to even go to the start line). Go easy with your itb's and Cant wait to see you when your back!!

Erica you're an inspiration. Be very proud of yourself. I would have flaked long ago. I wish i had your grit. I am not sure Hadley could have got this far without you doing all the prep and training with her. Although in some ways this seems like such an individual event, I can speak from having listened to Hadley, that this was much more of a team effort than people appreciate. Go team Canada-America!
Wes

Babe, so proud of you I can't begin to explain. The level of training and commitment has been faultless unfortunately the ITB is beyond your control and if wasn't for the injury you'd have smashed it. What you've acheived so far most people couldn't manage. Sounds like there are a lot of casualties in the race and today was really tough conditions. Hope you stay in camp to help the others and support Twiglet, she needs to catch the Italian bird! So proud of you, love you. G.

For the record ... I think your both insane for deciding to run/jog 150 miles across a desert in a third world country. On the flip side, it's awesome inspirational and something I am very happy just imagining that I might someday do but not actually doing on a vacation. Perhaps skiing or sunbathing on an island somewhere. Hopefully you'll both still enjoy the beach after this experience. Keep kicking ass!!!

Hope you've had a good day today and you're in good health and high spirits?

Excellent work so far to both of you. We are all so impressed. Both of you are legends so keep it up.

Keep going, your doing really well, Erica, just think of it as training for when you take Samantha to Top Shop in London, the desert must be much easier than fighting with women for clothes!!!

Great stuff girls.
Keep battling MK. You've done the hard part and got the first couple of days out the way and you're going to smash it now. You can so do this.
Posted On: 05 Oct 2010 08:03 am
Girls. you are both doing amazingly well. It is brutally tough but you are both fully prepared and you are both more than capable of nailing this. Try and enjoy the experience and your surroundings as you will be looking back on it for years to come. I am still dining out on my Namibia experience and intend to for some time to come yet!

You are both doing so well keep it up. We are exhausted following you, monitoring the website, reading the email alerts and the breaking news. We are just so proud of you.
All our love xx

Well done both of you. Now the first two stages are done, the rest will be a breeze (even if you hate the place). We have been following the updates every minute so we are right there with you. Hang in there and keep going. Love you and oooooh so proud! Mummy and Daddy

Hadley, you rock! The Italian girl has no chance. Keep it up, you are doing great.
we'll keep following (from the comfort of our couch :) )

Babe, I know you're hurting and hating but be strong, you know that you can do this. Day 1 and 2 are done and dusted, look forward to a new day and nail it. Time for the desert to get a Harvey's Punch!!
Both of you keep up the great work, others are dropping and you're still in the mixer! Keep going strong!

Both of you are inspiring all of us here in Dallas. We all had one less cookie today at lunch! Keep it up!
Posted On: 04 Oct 2010 07:41 pm
Good luck on Stage 3. Very nice to hear there is a spring half way through the course: it should refresh you both, just make sure to stop, Hadley!
Lots of love,
Mom

Pipe down Jonny. Get your arse on that fancy road bike you just bought that is sure to soon start gathering dust lad! How does it feel to get outpaced by your future father-in-law (who might I add is significantly older than you)
And Hadley, I aint going to Nepal either. I love you, but I am becoming more and more comfortable with you running enough for the pair of us.

Hey guys, really well done so far. Wesley said i have to write something that will keep you going, so, keep up the hard work, we both are really proud of you and think that wesley is a very lucky guy to have such an inspirational wife. wesley said that he fancies doing the nepal run next year, i said that he should maybe think about just being able to run 5 miles first. or he can be one of the guys that picks up the course markers after you pro's. ps dont tell him i said this, hehehehe xx

Erica, you're a legend. Keep it up. Get angry with this and you'll get there.
Hadley, keep it up and sleep well.
This really is so impressive from the pair of you.

Amazing! Plus did you know you are both famous? Both your names made it in the Breaking News emails that everyone receives!
Erica that is good if you hate the place just channel all that energy into killing the walk. Remember when you would get so angry with me how much strength that gave you? I remember ;)
You both have already achieved what 99.9% of the population could never do. Push push push you can both do it.

Hadley's day-
Off to as rocking start! Loving every minute of the heat, scenery and pain. Temps reached 48 deg Celcius so it was a scorcher today and it felt like we were baking in the oven. Now, just need to learn how to pace myself pretty quickly so I don"t burn out. Day 2 is dune day, aka hell. Looking forward to it.
Thanks for all the well wishes everyone - they will go a long way in movitating and pushing us both. Please keep them coming!
Erica's day-
As you'll see by my times it's been a really tough day. I only got in about an hour ago! Almost didn't make it to the finish line - my ITBs are very bad and I've been going at a snails pace all day. Grant - I had to open the do not open letter... sorry not a good sign! Hopefully I'll survive dune day - we shall see.
All you work people ot there, it's a small world - we are with 2 Goldmans PB Reps!!
Thanks to everyone who have sent us messages and are following us online. Hope to blog again tomorrow
Hugs and kisses and sand from Hadley & Erica xxxxx

Erica, sounds incredibly challenging already but you've trained for this and you've worked your ass off walking 50miles in a day, just imagine it's a stroll along the south coast!! we're both thinking of you and wishing both of you the very best. You CAN do this!

Go Erica and Hadley! Do try to beat GS. Give them a tough time or a knock if they try to pass you on the course. I imagine throwing sand could be useful as it may temporarily blind them. GO BEAST!
Posted On: 04 Oct 2010 05:31 pm
Sending heaps and heaps of positive thoughts across the sand dunes to you ... we're all completely in awe of what you're doing ... you're both amazing ! Another day down - you'll be there in no time

Erica - Not sure what ITB's mean, but it's just another part of the challenge. You are stronger than you know and we are all pushing you up those dunes even if we aren't there with you. Who cares how fast you go...I know for sure it's faster than a snail. They are slow little critters!!!! Try to celebrate the fun moments :) those are the ones you will remember. Love you tons, Livvie xoxo

Great effort ladies! Stay positive and keep helping each other. If you need some inspiration, think of my elegance and poise as I slid down Ben Nevis on my arse with my poles waving in the air.
Don't forget to stay alert for dune sharks during the next stage. - They stary buried right up until the moment of attack.

Hads - you are my hero. I think you may an undercover wonderwoman. So very proud and impressed with you. The news has got me on the edge of my seat... "will Lund be able to catch the experienced Italian before the end of the stage...?" i'm thinking, YES SHE CAN!!
Erica - sending loads of good vibes your way too, you are fantastic for doing this and I am in awe of you too.
I can't imagine how tough it is out there for both of you, but keep it up x

Erica - Don't worry, I have got grant on a 'look but dont touch' policy at the strip clubs we are going to.
Hadders - try and give the italian woman a dead leg if you can to slow her pace up.

Hang in there Erica, i've had that injury and it is painful but you might surprise yourself tomorrow and not feel too much pain. Depends a lot on the terrain you walk on, Orthotics in my shoes solved that problem. Good luck tomorrow!!!

Good job sista you did a Marathon in the scorching heat and in the sand! When your feeling pain think back to how much more painful it was when you licked the railing of ice and your tongue stayed stuck... Kidding aside you can do this stay positive and we are all behind you. You have trained and prepared for this and you can do it. luv you xox

Just saw your blog and it sounds like day one was pretty intense.
Erica, I know it must be tough and I can't believe the ITB's have already gone on day one and I know its easy for me to say but try not to let the pain get to you, you can't do damage. Hopefully some treatment tonight, stretching tomorrow throughout the day and copious amounts of drugs will help. Be careful on any decline. You can do this, we're all behind you. Take your time and keep reading the messages.....x

One day gone, try to rest and sleep tonight. Give it your best tomorrow and hopefully you won't be in too much pain. We are thinking of you and send hugs and kisses. Lots of love

Hello Everyone!
Heading off to Cairo in 3 days in an attempt to acclimate to our desert surroundings in preparation for the big day on Sunday.
This first blog entry is primarily to ensure that all our friends, family and loved ones can track us in the desert before we set off! All being well, you can expect daily updates of our progress ( most likely written by Hadley as she'll be way in front!) and details of how the week is unfolding.
Feel free to send us mails that we will be able to pick up while we're out there in the cybertent each evening.
Thanks to everyone for their support and well wishes as we embark on this crazy adventure!
Erica and Hadley x
