You're awesome, Simon. Way to go! 10K should be a breeze! I have really enjoyed reading your blogs. They are so descriptive and detailed. Somehow, after reading, I always go to the kitchen to fill my water bottle! I'm sure you'll be inspired to get through the last bit knowing your family will be there waiting. Take care, and we'll see you when you get back. Buddy

Simon--- somehow the word "congratulations" just doesn't encompass the incredible force of will it must of taken to complete this incredible goal....maybe the word is better like this: CONGRATULATIONS!!!!! Safe journey home for you and your family!

Simon..I look forward to your daily posts. Keep it going, one foot at a time, one mile at time. Your journey is inspiring. By the way..I have been told that you only have to be faster than the slowest runner to avoid falling prey to the hyenas and lions!

James Clark

Posted On: 05 May 2017 05:21 pm

Just blown away by your determination Simon! Keep it up, I have no doubts you can finish - and possibly wrestle a hyena into submission along the way. My hike today in the hills of Islamabad seems pretty pathetic now in comparison ;) Look forward to the next update.

Michelle Matthews

Posted On: 05 May 2017 02:16 pm

Good lord, what a journey you're on! If you can make it through yesterdays hell of 81km, endless heat, and man-eating hyena's, you've got the next two days in the bag. I hope you were able to treat your feet, rehydrate and get the grit out of your teeth! Wishing you a 'restful' run through the dunes today! As always, you've got this Simon! Cheers to you.

Kasia Foustok

Dear Simon, You have been my best manager so far and a constant model to follow, and you are now the most inspiring man I know! I have read your various publications and blogs on your previous and current adventures/challenges, and I am simply amazed and in total respect for what you have achieved, for your courage and determination, for your positive outlook on life, for your capacity to grow, to become stronger and better, intellectually, morally, physically. You remind us of the almost limitless capacities of the human being, as long as we are patient, determined, engaged. Even if I don't think I will ever be able to achieve your incredible results, thinking of you made me want to do at least small but resolute steps to improve who I am, what I do and how I do it. To become better and worthier, to live life at its fullest, to resist mediocrity and smallness. Thank you Simon, you are the best mentor ever! And I wish you all the energy, motivation, moral and physical strength to get where you want to get! Rouslan

What an adventure and resilience! Each hour, each day is a huge success - only look at bite size pieces, each mile, reflecting only on all of the achievement of the day that's now behind you! Rib cages and skulls can be something to draw strength from - great motivators. It is always inspiring to have options! Dig deep, keep up the fight, challenge those harsh elements. Take in the small things as encouragement - the sea air, the view, the breeze. Piece by piece, mile by mile! Fantastic work Simon.

Oh Simon - What have you gotten yourself into this time?! YOU'VE GOT THIS! I hope you got to see some lions today and I really hope they were holding up inspirational signs like "You are beating all the people behind you" and "Blisters are braille for 'Awesome'" Keep on keeping on!

Absolutely speechless over everything you have accomplished to date Simon. Own your beast. You've got this. My friend, dial in your pace early, like a metronome, and the hours will pass like minutes. Just think of the impact your gonna make in the lives of your children, your family and the people around - your Wife, children won't be able to take their eyes off you. You're a inspiration, my friend... "May the road rise to meet you, May the wind be always at your back, May the sun shine gently on your face, And, may God hold you in the palm of His hand." Best wishes, Joe Mauko PS - lets meet up for dinner when you get back!

James MacDuff

The Long March, eh? On the positive side, you are not following Chairman Mao on a 9000+ km, year long retreat. On the downside, you only have one day to get 'er done! I still find the whole idea of this madness incomprehensible (to say the least!), but as a lover of randomness that admires the craziness that humans can aspire to, I tip my cap, sir. Time is a funny thing. We shall toast the successful completion of your stage (and race) in person before the year is out. See it through.

Jean-francois Begin

Posted On: 03 May 2017 03:18 am

Hey buddy!! Great to read you ran all day. I remember vividly that 3rd stage on the beach and it was a killer! Way to go. You're in great shape! Top 20 and the race starts tomorrow with the long stage. When you read this, it'll be behind you. And if you hit a wall, never turn around. Find a way to go around it, over it or thru it....You're looking good and when you look up to the stars, imagine that they represent all your friends, family and loved ones that look down on you and have your back...that tail wind you've had a couple of stages, it's then pushing you forward. Can't wait to read your long stage experience. CHEERS my friend!!!

Congratulations on completing your first day. The tent mate incident sounds familiar. Get some earplugs or a lion...whatever works for you. Must be fun to see all those prints in the sand. As for the exfoliation, just think of how soft your skin will be when you get back. :) . Best of luck for Day 2.

James MacDuff

Posted On: 01 May 2017 01:18 pm

Wow - not sure whether to be more impressed with your finish in 13th, or with that articulate summary written in a state of pure exhaustion. As I think of you charging through the dunes, I am reminded of Milton Friedman's quote - "If you put the federal government in charge of the Sahara, in 5 years there would be a shortage of sand." Doubtful, but you get his point. Keep up that hard-charging pace. Only a few more days, and then, I'm sure, you will be dreaming of the Gobi.
