There are no words...."only" a 10k remains. You've got this. You are truly an amazing individual who now has some really kicking stories to tell. Finish this off & then go soak in the pool with a cold wet drink for a few hours. Congratulations!

I am watching 4 Deserts on Netflix-Matt said this is what inspired you to face this incredible challenge. I am so happy I am watching this after I know you are through the worst of it. .tomorrow I know the exhilaration of knowing YOU DID IT will help you fly to the finish! I can't wait to see photo of you crossing the finish line! "It is the one who endures that the final victory comes" What you have endured, celebrate YOUR amazing victory Veronica. We are all so proud of you and can only imagine the pride you must be feeling.

Oh my gosh, I'm so glad this is almost over. This is all very stressful for me. I'm worried all the time. I'm stressed about your feet and your skin. I'm worried about you getting rhadomyolysis and then getting kidney failure and then squeezing the kidneys more with your ibuprofen... So impressed and proud of your tenacity, hoping the last 10K is a breeze! I hope that you have a big bathtub to soak in when you get back to Swakop and find a pharmacy that sells Tyelnol with Codeine and prescription strength anti-inflammatories- please text me before self-dosing ;) Congratulations!!!

Veronica! I know it's a bit too late for any more encouragement, but you're awesome! You're doing great and accomplishing something that you've wanted and that hardly anyone can actually do. The times and the speed don't matter. You just hang in there. Then realize what you've really accomplished and how awesome you really are!

Veronica, What you are doing right now is so mind blowing and amazing. Us junior rowers are in Oklahoma right now for regionals, and reading how you are pushing your body is so inspiring to all of us going into our own races. Power 10 to the finish!! We are cheering for you from OKC!! -TRC Varsity Girls

So very proud of you. You've always set big goals and accomplish them. Time isn't a factor or even on the scale of disappointment by those who support you and are inspired by you. You are doing something that takes strength many of us can't comprehend. We are rooting you on and know that if you listen to your body, do what's best you'll pass the finish line and that is something to be extremely proud of.

By time you read this post you will have the privilege of saying that you completed TWO MARATHONS IN THE DESERT IN ONE DAY! Who gives a shit about the time?! I am SO PROUD of you for dedicating yourself to such a big goal! I brag about you all the time! Great job and I can't wait to hear all about it when you get back! First of all- listen to Dr. Sarah- don't worry about your times! You're there- you're DOING IT! As long as you know you're doing what you're capable of and are happy with yourself, that's all that matters. I think you're pushing yourself to incredible limits and it sounds like all of your fans/followers think so, too! You're almost there. One more stage after today! Keep your head up- you're doing great!

The bird was probably a Pied Crom. they are super smart and have been observed mobbing passing ospreys and snake eagles but avoiding black kites. <~~ fun fact. Also, watch out for tiny lions. https://media2.giphy.com/media/mhDwIpbsgGKk/200.gif You're doing great! keep it up.

To the Baddest BAB on the planet! Hang in there, sister! I'm amazed by what you've accomplished, although it sounds absolutely grueling. I hope that today is going well - I'm sending you good vibes! (I think your bird was a called a Carp's Tit. They're only found in Namibia and Angola so a good one for your life list. I texted you a photo to check out whenever you get access to your phone.)

Sarah Daniels

Veronica- no one cares about your times (well, you do). Just get through this, this is an amazing accomplishment. Walk if you can- the less friction from your pack and shoes the better. You can come home and tell everyone you ran it and no one will know the difference (or care). Your training allowed you to get this far, anyone with less wouldn't have made it this long. Some tough, tough times- crying is OK, but not too much- you need all the hydration you can get. I we'll go for an 'easy' row when you get back- in like a month when you body has healed. We're all [just sitting on our butts] supporting you. Be kind to yourself and give yourself some credit. Hoping Namibia is kind to you today.

Your strength is amazing. Your life will never be the same. You are accomplishing something beyond comprehension for most of us that will shape the rest of your life. How utterly amazing YOU are Veronica. You have dug so deep to get to where you are and I know it is your determination and huge heart that have gotten you to this amazing point. There is another grasshopper for you to find and some more Welwitschia plants for you to count, walk each step knowing ALL your fans are walking it with you. Your new friends Gus and Bob will be at the finish with ALL of us. . Sending you hugs and so much love!

When we go to the website to leave you a message, it lists 'recent blog posts' by other competitors- so I have another strategy: there is a man named Inia who is an ER doctor from New Zealand, and a guy names James Dean who is an ER nurse in Australia, and a guy named Jean-Francois who is an Orthopedic surgeon -- MAKE FRIENDS WITH ALL THESE PEOPLE so they can nurse you back to health and help get you through. I'll troll the bloggers to see if I can find you a wound-care nurse or like a scientist who can grow new skin.

Morgan Daniels

Posted On: 05 May 2016 01:21 am

So proud of you Veronica! Think of the tafels you can drink when you finish! Also your wounds will probably look way worse than my gunshot wound scar. @lisa Lee....trust me when I say its better that you have to make up a story about getting shot than actually getting shot.

Lisa Lee

Posted On: 04 May 2016 10:43 pm

Veronica - I have this faded scar below my collarbone thanks to a cheap spandex tank, a sunburn, and a long row practice -- but sometimes I tell people it's a gunshot wound, because that's a lot more interesting. Your battle scar stories will need no embellishing, because you will have paid your respects to the biggest, baddest sand dunes on the planet during a scorching 155 mile run through the mother-effing Namib Desert. With a big, fat pack on your back! You’re more than half-way done – you’ve got this!

Sarah Daniels

Posted On: 04 May 2016 09:44 pm

Glad you had a better day. There's no way you are going to see a 'wild elephant' - they don't exist and anyone who says they saw one is a big fat liar. There's no fucking way I want to see any pictures of any of your blisters/lack of skin. Bleck! I'll await the pictures of giraffes and elephants when you get to Etosha. Stay strong friend, you can do this.

Gordon McGregor

Posted On: 04 May 2016 09:13 pm

Well done on getting through Stage 4 too! Only a couple more to go - just like an easy stroll around Town Lake I'm sure... That 10km at the end is going to feel great! Keep on going, Veronica.

Don't worry too much about tomorrow, I know you will power through it because if you don't make it back Matt will kill not only your plants but likely three cats as well.....those kitties need you to return in one piece! I CAN'T wait to hear about today's adventures! Look forward to seeing pictures when you get back! We love you!

I too am so happy to hear today-or yesterday was a better day. OK I'll admit a bit crazy that running a marathon in 100+ degrees with your shoulders and feet taped together is a better day. Forget Texan strong YOU are "Scheer" strong! One step at at time, one flag at at time. You are going to do it Veronica and we are all in awe. I hope today you are once again surrounded by stunning beauty and feel all the love we are sending your way. YOU've got this Veronica-stay strong. We are with you and love you.

So glad to hear today was a better day! I saw the photo of you smiling and I couldn't tell if that was a "ha...." Smile or I'm going to quietly kill this stage, smile. Great work! Way to show them that from Texas, you go Big or go home! And you're going BIG!

Veronica, I was just looking through blogs to say hello to some people I know and I noticed yours. I think it was you I met in Austin at the end of the trail one day, and we talked about these races and you said you really wanted to do one. And I see you are there and you are crushing it! SO GREAT!! I'll be cheering for you the rest of the way now that I know you are there! :) Bet you wouldn't mind the cool water of Town Lake right about now. I probably shouldn't mention that we've had a very cool week this week--lots of rain and temps in the 60s-70s--in May, but I did mention it so you can channel the cooler weather! :) You are over the hump and looking strong!

You never cease to amaze me with your drive and accomplishments! I can only imagine the minute by minute struggle of the challenge you're describing. Thank you for sharing. Your words are not at all a 'downer', but a true inspiration. You've got this!!!

Sarah Daniels

Posted On: 03 May 2016 05:27 pm

Veronica- you can do this! The reason why you are the best rowing partner is because you can dig deep down and get through any physical exhaustion and pain to finish. There are so many people who can't and never could do this- but YOU CAN. You'll put one sandy foot in front of the other, you'll cry, you'll curse, you'll think that you can't do it- but you will and you can. We're all pulling for you.

Kaci Hampton Lambe

Veronica! I'm so impressed with you! Stay strong. You're doing great! I know today was hard, but you got this, girl! One foot in front of the other. One breath in. One breath out. You are beyond impressive. There's no shame in a good cry. Keep writing! You're inspiring me and others to do great things! So much love your way!

Jenny Bailey

Veronica, Sounds like you are having a great time really. Few people get to find out what they are made of like this. There will be tough times but I believe that you'll get through it. As my daughter says when she is running 'come on legs, you can do it!'

Kristoffer Villamin

Nice work. The flag method worked well for me too. Keep it up. Relish in what you've accomplished so far. Lay down between stages and keep your feet up. Don't get up unless you have to and stay ahead with your fluids and lytes. Take care of your feet!!! See a medic if you have to. Keep up the good work. We're all proud of you.

Hi Veronica- i am so glad to be a friend of Nancy Addis who shared this blog post. You are amazing! But that sounds a little flimsy to me, given what you are doing. Yes, the physical feat that you are accomplishing is something few will ever even consider taking on, never mind preparing for and completing this incredible test of the human body. But what fills me with awe, what is inspiring complete strangers like me who are far flung across the world from you during these very hard moments, is your incredible mental and spiritual strength to keep on going. The training for that is lifelong and you have to pull from the greatest depths to remind yourself that you've got it. Every step is supported by people who believe in you. You are not alone. You are an inspiration! You can do this!

Jenn Elliott

Hi Veronica! Mayra sent me your way. You're doing an amazing job. It takes a tough and dedicated person to do what you've undertaken. Skip Dupont

Sounds amazing, Veronica. I can only imagine the sights, sounds, smells, and everything else going on during your trek. You've made it through 2 days and you can't quit now. The challenges sound amazing. And, I can understand the crying. I broke down after I finished the Austin Marathon several years ago, for no apparent reason. But, I had accomplished something I never thought I could. And, that's what I'm hoping for you. I know you can do this. You are an amazing person just for attempting this, but I think you're even more amazing than that. I think you are going to finish and you'll be able to look back at this and just know that you did something that very few people will attempt or accomplish. Go get 'em, Veronica.

I know what you are doing is incredibly hard, beyond belief, but the amount of chatter around the office is nothing but admiration and positivity about what you are accomplishing. Sending thoughts of cool weather, no sand and pain free extremities.

YOU. ARE. AMAZING! Was just talking with Maria and Suzanne about your adventure yesterday, marveling at how there's NO FREAKING WAY we could do this. I couldn't even dedicate the time to train for such a thing. And there you are- doing it! I think your new friend's flag strategy sounds great. Remember when we would run hills- you just focus on getting to one point at a time. Or getting through 10 strokes at a time. That's what that flag method sounds like to me. You have so many fans and followers in Austin! It's like being at home and cheering for someone you know in the olympics or something- you have so much support. Just think of all the foot rubs I'm sure Matt will give you when you get back. And Diesel will lick your wounds! By the time you read this- you've already completed THREE stages! And when you're halfway through tomorrow- YOU'RE HALFWAY THROUGH THE WHOLE THING! You've already had an awesome start, now you're in that middle thousand. Keep your head up. Have faith in your preparation/training. You've got this! I would have probably already gotten lost away from the flags and the sidewinder eaten me. Always thinking of you!

Hi Veronica, I am a friend of Nancy Addis.she was always a great supporter of mine when competing in IM Kona. Since reading her post yesterday I googled 4 deserts and stayed on the site for 2 hours including moving to your blog. I am in complete awe of what you are doing. On a much much smaller scale I am familiar with the feeling of hitting a low in a race when you briefly wonder why you are doing this. From what Nancy has said about you I have no doubt you will push any negative thought from your head as quickly as possible. Every moment just stay in that moment. Don't even think 5 minutes ahead. Keep knocking off one flag at a time. Feel the support of many of us who do not even know you and are completely inspired by your incredible strength and determination. One step at a time. Go get it!

Wow, that's a lot of sand D: I agree with the other commenters you definitly have to just think one flag at a time and keep looking up and around so it's not just something that feels like punishment, it becomes sight seeing too. YOU CAN DO IT!!! ~♡

Wow sounds like a tough day and you crushed it! Can't wait to hear about the rest of the stages, you got this!

Come on, V! We're all cheering for you. I've personally witnessed what you're capable of enduring and I know, deep down, you're not anywhere CLOSE to your breaking point. Don't think about the next day or the day after, think about today. Think about one pink flag and then the next. And hey, pick your head up! Take a look around. Sure, there's a helluva lot of sand, but look at the beauty of its simple wind-swept forms, think about how easily it's moved and it changes, and compare yourself to it. You are not easily moved. You are the force. Be strong! KEEP GOING!

Veronica, you are such a wonder: fierce, beautiful, open, bad-ass. Your brave embrace of daring and adventure--of the most challenging kinds--inspires we who watch you in awe to live more audaciously. Keep going--there is no failure in this for you, _not anywhere_; just awesomeness and a lifetime memorable experience. Go, woman, go!

You are already such a winner! I admire your courage to push yourself so hard. Hopefully tomorrow will be better. I think I read that the footing will be less sandy. No matter what happens, we are all so proud of what you have accomplished. One foot in front of the other, you can do anything for a couple of minutes...just string those all together. But most of all, take care. Big hug & high five.

Well, if it was going to be easy, I guess they'd call it rowing... (DON'T HATE ME, I'M KIDDING. LAUGH!) My first road marathon was well over 6 hours, and that was on flat pavement. You're doing an amazing job! All the cats miss you, and they know I'm terrible at taking care of them. Monkey sits and stares at me in disapproval most of the day. Bring back a lion cub that'll be Diesel's twin, as long as that lion likes eating small black cats... (also kidding!) LOVE YOU!!!!

First off, I'm so proud to say you are my sister and I am truly enjoying telling anyone who will listen about your awesome adventures! I can't wait to see pics! Second, running on sand sucks and I don't blame you at all for having a couple good cries. Third, Finley is very excited to see you again and see all your pics of the wild animals! Maybe you could make the pictures into a little flip book when you get back, she would love that! We all miss you and love you!

Hi Veronica! So sorry to hear it was a rough one today! You can do this and the crying is, I'm sure, the culmination of all the emotions you're having. Try to enjoy the scenery and ignore the discomfort! Love you!

For some reason I am just seeing this. I don't think it was showing earlier (if you're wondering why none of your friends commented). Sounds like your first day went well and I'm looking forward to hearing about Day 3, which I see that you completed. Almost 1/2 way! You can do it!

Awesome job on your first day! Only 5 more to go. I hope if you saw the lions that they had full bellies and that a camera wasn't something you jettisoned to save weight. Good luck on the next stage!

Hello Friends,

Just wanted to give an update for those following along with my little adventure. The host town is now overrun with brave 4Deserts competitors from all over the world and it's so exciting to hear so many different languages in this tiny little seaside city in Namibia.

1st - I don't know why my first post was repeated so many times. This site isn't very good... 2nd - YOU AREN'T POSTING ENOUGH 3rd - I won't post my favorite Prefontaine quote, based on the circumstances of your race... but Marc's already posted a good quote, so I'll leave you with that one 4th - I'll remember to feed and water the cats. Don't worry.

...and I knew what the loneliness of the long-distance runner running across country felt like, realizing that as far as I was concerned this feeling was the only honesty and realness there was in the world and I knowing it would be no different ever, no matter what I felt at odd times, and no matter what anybody else tried to tell me. -Alan Sillitoe GOOD LUCK!!
