Namib Race (2011) blog posts from Henrik Uth

07 October 2011 02:41 am (GMT+02:00) Cairo

Finished the long day race - and managed 87km in 20 hours! So while I will  not reach the full 250km, I have now managed to conclude Sahara Race with 175km. With a 30th placement on day day and 61 on the long day, for someone who shouldn't even participate if you ask the Doc, I suppose that I can leave Egypt quite content with this result. It has been a great experience, beautiful scenary and great people. Special thanks to the Medical team for taking good care of me when I was down and to Jacob Hastrup at location for his great coaching and motivational support during the long day.

Did a few hours today and then took rest of the day to try to complete me re-hydration and enjoy offroading plus the beautiful desert. Next stage is 86km... so if I making it it will take a good 20 hours..Am just hoping that I have managed to get my fluid balance back in order so I can try to finish this mamouth stage. Other than that - I'm getting seriously tired of my energi powder, which is breakfast and lunch and all snacks inbetween. See you on the other 'side'!!

Hey Henrik. Very well done. You really deserve to cross the finish line and feel proud of yourself. We are all proud of you. Enjoy your first beer in a long time!!!!

KÆMPE FLOT Henrik, har hørt du klarede 87 km i går og nat på 20 timer. Jubi- sejt..............stolt søn og mor.

04 October 2011 02:33 am (GMT+02:00) Cairo

Bad news - the Doc pulled me out of the competition. Suppose after having thrown-up my guts last night, having killer headache, been on IV for 3 hours to attempt hydration and sleeping in the medic tent overnight, they were right to pull me from today's stage. I will see how I feel tomorrow if I can finish or just reach 100km ;-)
Thanks for all the support!!

PS: Sahara is ,as always, beautiful!

Henrik, you deserve great respect for what you've achieved. It takes more than ordinary courage to embark on an adventure like the Sahara Race. RESPECT!!!!!

Sorry to hear that..Keep us updated and take care of yourself.

Posted On: 05 Oct 2011 02:06 pm

It is unfair that you should suffer on 2nd stage. Listen to the doc and finish safely. Well done so far.

Posted On: 05 Oct 2011 12:21 pm

This was my day :) started out with my planned strategy of following the leaders from the start. While they moved on in record pace, and I was overtaken by a number of competitors, but by the time we came halfway - people started feeling the pain from the heat - which to me was a plesant morning with up to only 35-36 degrees. so I started 'eating' my way in on them... I think I ended up as #30, after 5:30 hours or so for the 38km (this was for you Habibti - less than 6hours as agreed ;)) Arriving at Camp 2 with an average speed of 7km/h, I though did realize the price I paid - 3 blisters, so now doing 'surgery' on my feet, before the fun-fun day tomorrow - which is Sand Dune day!!!

By the way - I met our guide from last year - Rehab, and Mo he did tell me to let you know that you can call him to find out where we are on Friday (which will be very close to Fayoum).

I look forward to see what tomorrow's update will bring/contain, as there is no way i can do a repeat of today but then again, now's the time for me to take it easy and enjoy the headstart I have...

Posted On: 03 Oct 2011 06:59 pm

Way to go Henrik Uth! You will have them all for desert before you know it! hoping that tomorrow brings more heat ;) Only you would meet a familiar face in the desert.. hehehe.. but unfortunately we won't be going to Fayoum this time around :( (just so we make on time to greet you at the the pyramids)! Joining in with shouting for you!

Posted On: 03 Oct 2011 10:04 am

Flot Henrik. Bevar din strategi og "reducer" antallet af vabler. Der er nok ikke plads til 3 stk pr. dag!!! Din mor er både stolt og lidt bekymret!!! Knus Hans

First of all thanks to Magda for saving me, by getting safetypins as required by the organisers. checked and weighed in. but great chocker - 13kg all of a sudden!!
4 hours drive to camp 1. then checking in and then dinner. Was hanging out with the other Danes - we are 6 in total. Did another run at the pack, to lighten it - managed to take out another 1-1.5kg from my pack.so feeling a bit better about tomorrow. Speaking of which - tomorrow is 38km. starting at 0700, so lets see what time I`ll be in tomorrow. Off to bed shortly before getting up at 0530 for breakfast, packing and warm-up. Thanks for all the support so far!!

09 September 2011 05:03 am (GMT+02:00) Cairo

time is flying... I cannot believe that in the last 5 months I have come from pretty much nothing (when doing 10km was a challenge) to this where I am doing 1/2 Marathon every day in 30-35 degrees. and in the last 3 weeks having done equally number of Marathons. tomorrow 50km in the desert and then one more week (peaking with 60km) of training before scaling down the last two weeks before the Race. ready, set.........GO!

24 May 2011 09:11 am (GMT+02:00) Cairo

Now that was not a nice surprise to get... just as I was progressing so well on my training, then now I have at least 2-3 weeks set-back with a sprained medial collateral Ligament. So i guess in many ways I am pretty much starting all over again - 5 month to go ;)

12 April 2011 03:22 am (GMT+02:00) Cairo

I have started with my training, trying to avoid any damage while building up my shape, I have decided to start out slow.. time being I am doing 10km every other day and then in the weekends I go to the Qatari desert and do 10km there, testing various types of sand. But we are now in April and already seeing temperatures coming close to 40 degrees.. so during/after the training sessions, i am now already getting quite some experience with water consumption (seems that I am consuming 2-2.5L for every 10km.) and and foot care.. got my first blood blister - so excellent training ;))

Goh, write me at [email protected] and I'll tell you what I know. that said - I am fortunate, I haven't had one blood blister since April (now 1100km later I've actually only had 2 blister in total, so I am quite happy with my feet!).

Posted On: 11 Jun 2011 05:08 am

Can you tell me more about blooooooooooood blisters??? it's so scaryyyyyyy.. I am new in the Sahara race 2011.
