Namib Race (2012) blog posts from Brent Griffiths

02 November 2012 11:34 am (GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi

So the last day of the race has come. I woke up feeling pretty good considering I have ran/walked 160km. because I was feeling ok I decided to run as much as possible. I made it to the 15km mark before needing to walk. From there I made it to cp2 and entered in the valley of the whales, which is an open air museum with fossilized whale bones from millions of years ago. during this time the heat came out.i don’t know the temp but it was hot enough to make you cramp. I managed to hang on with the two females that are coming 2nd and 3rd. they lost me at cp 4 but it was good to hang on for as long as possible. From cp4 the coarse went up to the tip of a sand dune where we had to navigate along the ridge line of the dune. By the time I got to the 50km mark I was starting to derail. I had chaffing, feet swelling, back and leg cramps, migraines, and the Achilles injury. It was not a good feeling but I just had to keep moving.

When I got to cp6 I was absolutely exhausted so I stayed at the cp for 20 mins to elevate my feet and eat. That made a big improvement for by the time I left the c I was ready to run and make up some time. By the time I made it to the last cp I was sitting in 29th spot which I didn’t want to loose so I sat at the cp and ate some food and then took off with a competitior hot on my heels trying to chase me down. It felt like the longest 9km I have ever run before. I kept pushing until I could see the lights of the camp then pushed one last time to make it over finishing in 29th spot and a time of 13hr 50mins for the 86km coarse.

The whole week has been amazing and im so relieved to of finished. Tomorrow is a photo finish at the pyramids where it doesn’t count towards the final placings. I am now looking forward to the rest of my holiday through Jordan and Israel then off to the uk to see family.

Thank you to everybody for your comments and support.

Hey Brett What a champion! An outstanding achievement and it makes TNF100 a walk in the park. Both Jody and I are entering TNF100 next May so hope to be able to do some runs with you before then. Anyway, you have inspired me and a lot of others with your determination. Enjoy your achievement!

I would have to be the most inconsistent performer for the week. Today I ran well and finished in the top 30 (i think!). The doc gave me some pain killers for the run which seemed to of helped as well as changing my run to more of a shuffle with my head down and block out the discomfort. The terrain for the coarse was mostly harder packed sand which helps heavier runners like myself. There was also alot of sea shells and rocky terrain which felt like you are on the bottom of the ocean floor. Todays weather was very different to the other days, there was alot of cloud cover which kept the temperature down in the 30s which felt amazing. I also had alot more nutrition than i did previous days which helped with the energy levels. I ran with another person which helped me push through and keep the pace.
It feels amazing to know that i only have one more day to go. The distance for tomorrow (86km) doesnt put me off one bit, im really looking forward to completing it as the last stage is only a few km;s by the pyramids for a photo finish. I have all my food and gear sorted and ready to finish!!
Thanks again for all the awesome comments as i look forward to getting to the finish line and reading them each day.

Brent, It sounds like you are doing very well in the race. Good luck on your last day! BTW...might not be the right time to mention it since you are probably eating food out of a can...but I went to "La Quinta" in Brisbane and I do not approve....sorry mate!

Awesome work mate, that finish line can't be too far away. The pain and fatigue will be worth it for the finish and a few cold beers at some point hey. If it was meant to be easy, we would all be there!

Keep going mate. Sounds like you’re battling through the pain, but just keep imagining the relief and huge sense of achievement when you cross the line tomorrow. 86K to go!!.... you’ll do that in your sleep mate! One day… keep it up.

All the best for your last day. Hope the weather isnt too hot for it and the terrain too soft. The weather in cov is shocking so try and enjoy the sunshiiineeeee as much as you can. To do what youve done this week is freakish, i cant even be bothered to run 10km let alone 250km through a desert. Looking forward to seeing the last post and the photo finish.

And as his run slows to a crawl and then the desert beats him to his knees he says i need rest and sleep for the desert has beaten me.He looks up to the stars and the moon and sees it in its glory and says desert you can not beat for the universe as witnes my brave challange to you, he gets up off his knees and carrys on with new strength.

Way to go Brent, you certainly sound positive and ready to smash this race, good to hear. Saw 2 photos of you in Stage 4.The best one was you walking in the desert with someone beside you. I have played the proud mother by putting the link to the photos on F.B. Today I was thinking how very proud nanna & poppa would be of you. Keep positive, stay focus and knock out the 86km race - you can do this - will be thinking of you and all the very best of luck xox

So happy to hear Day four was better! Awesome news and you've totally smashed it being in the top 30! That is just huge! You're doing so SO well and I know you must be feeling the pain but you know you can do it! 86km is incredible and you should be proud of how far you've come already! Today's affirmation was: 'the next breath I take I am breathing in a breath of strength'... Thought you might like that. Good luck for tomorrow! Can't wait to see your next update xx

31 October 2012 01:32 am (GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi

Last night I slept well considering my body is aching all over. Camp life after the race consists of just recovering, having dinner and going to bed. I forgot to mention that yesterday it got up to 47 degrees and it was about the same today. At the start I was feeling ok so I ran/walked to cp1 but the Achilles tendonitis has started to come back which means one thing… walking. After cp1 I was forced to walk the remaining 35km through never ending sand dunes. I think I finished around 55th place in a time of approx. 8 hours. It really sucks having to walk but I just really want to finish this challenge. At least 10 people have already pulled out, the medic tent last night had about 5 people receiving fluid IV’s. There have been some talented athletes forced out due to medical reasons which shows how tough this really is. Day 3 and beyond is not about fitness anymore, its about surviving and managing your body.

Tomorrow will be more of the same walking I think. Thanks for the comments everybody.

Good to hear your still going mate. Keep it up. Fight through the achilles problem, i dont expect you not to finish. 47 degrees and sand dunes sound like fun, hope your managing to get a decent sleep and recover for the days following. Were all thinking of you, and cheering you on.

hey bro, I can't believe the scale of what your doing but I know its insane just to be there. Even to get through it must feel like i life achievement.. The Hindu use the word 'Kundalini' which basically means the realization of achievement. We CAN do more than we believe we can, so don't give in bro.. go hard and make the most of it..

Hey mate, sounds like it’s been a tough few days for you. Let me tell you it’s nothing compared to what you’ve left behind!! Only joking mate, although I have done the weekly report for you so I know you can take that weight off your shoulders. I’ll send you a copy if you need some light reading to send you to sleep. Just in case you haven’t done enough today!! In all seriousness mate, keep going. You’re having a good go which is way more than any of us would ever think of doing. Keep thinking about the finish line. Hope the tendinitis is holding off a little and you can keep going. Dig in mate.

Keep up the good work Brent, you can do this. By the sounds of it more people will be forced to pull out as the race continues, you are lucky as you are strong and have very good endurance. Once you are over the hump you will soldier on! We are so very proud of you and you will look back at this challenge that you conquered and feel very proud of yourself. Saw you on video at the beginning of stage 3. You looked great

You're doing so well! You're almost half way now! Good sleep will help. You're amazing!

29 October 2012 11:54 am (GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi

Its amazing how different today was compared to yesterday. Even though the disctance was longer today it felt a lot more comfortable with the bloody back pack. The scenarywas amazing! Last night I slept well an sorted my pack in the morning. I ran pretty much the whole 11km to cp1and was feeling good.On the way to cp2 the heat really settled in and started to takeits toll but I managed to push through as my body was feeling pretty good. After the headaches casued by dehydration yesterday I increased the intake of electrolytes which helped. After cp2 was a lot of sand dunes!! I manage to run up some of the hard packed sand but the occasional soft patches really upset the rythem. As it is you have to take short strides to avoid falling in thesand.

I really pushed onto cp3 and overtook a few people which was good. When I got to cp3 they told me I was 25th position which was a huge moralebooster. After cp3 was 9km of more dunes. These dunes were steep!! The last 5-6 km I had to walk as the legs were gone, but so was every body elses so it was a slow walk to the finish. All in all a good day and 100 times betterthan yesterday.

Thankyou all for the message to date. Please keep them coming.

28 October 2012 11:49 am (GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi

Today was the firstday of running. Things started off well for me for the first 15km where i was running comfortably. We started by a big lake and the coarse followed around that and then went into a village. Once in the village I had arrived at check point 1 where I refilled up on water and went on my way. On my way to cp2 things started to go worng. My pack weighd in one of the heavistat at 14kg (not including water), so by the time I got to cp2 my back and right shoulder was starting to increase in pain.

After cp2 it was straight into the desert. By that time it was starting to get very hot and the agony my pack was causing slowed my running. Between cp3and cp4 iwas forced to walk as the bouncing pack on my shoulders was to much. Walking is not alot of fun as 5 mins feels like an hour as the horizon is never ending and it feels like your not making ground.

I finished injust under 6 hours which isnt too bad but I have some major sortingto do in my pack to lighten the load. Some pople have packs weighing inat 7kgs!! If i can get mine down to 10kg I should be right, i just hope my body repairs over night to let me run tomorrow otherwise its going to be a long day!

Well only 8 days to go until the Sahara Race 2012. I fly to Egypt early Sunday morning where I have a week to acclimatise and do some sight seeing. After 9 months of training I feel im ready and the fittest I have ever been. My only worry is about any inujuries that myight flare up from running the distance aswell as the sand and hot conditions.

I have all my food and gear ready to be packed, I just hope that it will all fit into my race pack as I have not had enough time to pack it all.

Sounds like you're all set Brent. Don't forget to pack as much of your race gear as possible in your carry-on luggage to make sure it arrives (but leave your multi-tool in the check-in baggage). See you soon in Cairo.
