Hi there, I competed in the Sahara Race 2010 and living in Northern Ireland during all my training (not the warmest of places!). However, took some Bikram Yoga classes in Belfast around a month out from the race, This intense exercise is all done in a 40C room and I found it immensely helpful for acclimatisation. In fact, my partner (who was a volunteer at the race and normally would wilt in any kind of heat) and I would say it was essential for us; the Sahara heat was never a real problem. Don't worry too much if you can't find any sand to train on. Alot of the race is on fairly hard surfaces. I did alot of hill work to strengthen the legs which helped during Dune Day :) Drink, drink and drink some more!!! Be sure to chuck back H20 constantly throughout the race days!! Make sure to finish all allocated water given to you, knocking back electrolyte tablets every hour (I used Endurolytes). My food consisted of Expedition dinners, Hammer nutrition Perpetuem and Recoverite. I find Perpetuem to be a fantastic product, it keeps me going all day, never hit the wall, highly recommend it. Just staying consistent with the water and fuel intake every hour is the key I think to getting through each race day. Its a simply stunning race; I enjoyed every minute. Good luck to you

Hi Gary, I'll be trialing some of the dehyd. meals (see RacingThePlanet website) during a few endurance events I have coming up. I'm also going be taking the Clif bars and am VERY focussed on the carb/electrolyte heavy recovery drinks..critical. As for training for the heat, I'm running "3 marathons in 3 days" in Nth Queensland next month and am likely to start the 'heat' yoga about a month out (Aug-Sept). But I don't think (I guess) any of us will really be ready for 50 degrees!!!! look forward to saying g'day. Hope all the training and prep goes well. Perhaps go into the previous blogs and go directly to a competitor about their eating plans (and success or otherwise). Steve B
