Namib Race (2012) blog posts from Jeff Guthrie

04 November 2012 02:57 am (GMT-05:00) Eastern Time(US & Canada)

Just a few short hours ago, I completed the final stage of the race with a 2km jog around the pyramids of Giza into the finish line to received my medal. A joyous and tearful event, celebrated with beers and pizza. Yesterday, 2nd, marked the final stage of the race, with a 86km march to the finished, the aptly called - Long March. This stage of the race began at 7am and finished for me 18:30 hours later. It was a day of ups and downs in terrain, temperature and spirit. I began the day feeling strong, but had a hard time getting into a rhythm so my progress was slow. It took me 10 hours to complete the first 5 stages, 50 km. At the end of stage 5 I was feeling weak so I stopped for 45 mins to have a bite to eat and to change my socks, prior to the onset of dark. I set out at 6pm to complete the final 36 km, hoping to finish my midnight. With sunset, came a strong head-wind that slowed my progress and filled my every breath with sand and dirty. By 11pm I had only been able to reach the 2nd of the final 4 check-points, check-point 7. Just after I left check-point 7, I was passed by 3 guys moving along at a slow jog. One of the guys said to me as they passed: "Not far to go now, mate". With that I stopped and cryed out to no one: " I'm done", and then I began to run. And run I did until I crossed the finish line just after 1am. I recall little of those last hours other than I felt no pain, despite a few tumbles and falls. I ran by moonlight only, which made the desert a mystical place. After crossing the finish line, I returned to my tent to celebrate the completion of the long march with four of my tent mates, with warm water, beef jerky and some leftover potatoe chip crumbs. Passing out quickly thereafter. I was woken a few hours by sharp dagger like pains in my legs, but quickly passed back out. In the end, it took me 50 hours to complete the 250km. Longer than I planned. I find it hard to sum- up the past 5 days, as much of it remains a bit of a fog that I am sure will clear over time. I met many great people, none more so than my tent mates. Seen some of the most breath taking scenery on earth and felt heat like no other. I have never been dirtier, never more tired, but never more content. How this experience will change me, if it does, remains a mystery. I want to thank the DJ from WJEFF for the tunes and words of encouragement that help get me through the long march. I want to thank all of you for your words of encouragement and cheers, verbal and fluid, from a far as I crossed the finish line. I want to thank Vera for her love and support. She has been with me every step of the way, I could not have started or finished the race without her support. The medal should go to her, not me. I look forward to seeing you upon my return. I'm done, yes!!!!! Jeff

Finished in just over 7 hours, I would have been faster but I had to take a 30 minute breck at check point two to have my shoulder mended due to my pack rubbing, sans skin - ouch.

As a result of taping my thigh I was able to run the first half of the course, until I becme tired and loss my form.

Nonetheless, I am pumped for the long march and will be dumping everything I absolutely don"t need before morning.

86km to go, can't believe it almost, ha, ha, over.

I plan to finish the race around mid-night Thursday, dinner time in Toronto so please all raise a glass in toast for me. I look forward to doing the same when i return.

Again, thanks for all of your words of support and encouragement.

All my love to my family. Vera I miss you so much.

Not sure when I will have an oppportunity to blog again, so watch the web-site for updates.

Unfortunately, not much left to say.

Jeff

After so many months of preparation and anticipation the 'Long March' is finally done. Boy, when you chose to do an endurance race, you really picked a doozy! The photographs are incredible and it has been so nice to see daily photos of you in that majestic location. You have inspired so many people along the way, not only those who are commenting on your blog but also the many others who are poring over the website looking for updates. I'm so very proud of what you have accomplished as you should be. As requested, I will be raising a glass of bubbly along with Sherri, Greg, Rebecca and Scott in recognition of your amazing adventure. I love you and miss you too.

Hope you indulged in some of the Halloween treats and have been blessed with a sugar rush. Keep your spirits up. Can't wait to hear about the ginourmous whale bones. The photos are spectacular. By the time you read this Jeff, you will have accomplished something very few people would ever consider attempting, and tons of people thought you were truly crazy for considering. Relish all you've experienced along the way, and the extraordinary physical and mental strength you've shown yourself you have. You're an inspiration, and I look forward to raising a glass of wine to toast your feat tonight! As I sit in my office thinking about your Long March, I can't help but think back on walking/running through the Sahara at night with the bright moon and stars to guide me, and a quietness and sense of peace that I've never experienced before. It really is an honour to experience the desert the way you have, and I know you will treasure the memories forever! Enjoy your well deserved rest day and seeing the Pyramids! The only things that might feel even better are the shower, toilet seat and real food that await your return to the hotel ; )

Jeff, I'm glad your thigh is better, and I can't imagine the pain of your pack rubbing on your skinless shoulder. You are truly "The Man". I will take myself to dinner tomorrow and at 6 pm I will raise my glass and shout "YAY, JEFF!!!!" in my loudest voice. I'm going to an Irish pub, so my cheer may fit in there better than, say,at Scaramouche, but who knows? Perhaps I'll have dinner there and wake up the gentrified. Thinking of you on this last leg.

31 October 2012 12:20 pm (GMT-05:00) Eastern Time(US & Canada)

Another long day. 9 hours, but a longer distance, including some incredible sand dune and a dip in a natural spring, beside a monastery. Long story.

My pulled thigh has all but stop this from being a running race for me and more of a trot and walk. Nonetheless, I am committed to finishing the race.

Today we had brutal heat, 46c, which made the middle section slow and difficult.

A special call-out to Matt and Lauren, your tunes kept me going today.

The landscape is unearthly at time and stunning to see. I sure the web-site photo give you an opportunity to experience it from a far, and hope see I am still hanging in.

Thanks for the words of encouragement.

Sorry for the jilted message, but I am typing on a mini computer in the dark, and I am tired.

Time for bed.

Love to Vera, Josh, Matt and Lauren.

Also, a call out to Brenda and the boys.

Another day, another 40km.

Jeff

Hi Jeff, We are following your progress with a mixture of disbelief -- that you can run for 9 hours in the desert! and total admiration at your fortitude. What a life-changing experience this must be -- the landscape must be so inspiring. If the heat seems unbearable just think of Canadian winters. Best wishes for a safe finish! Love the Wings

You've trained hard for this and - while it doesn't feel like it at times - you're enjoying the fruits of all that hard work. You're in a setting that so few people will ever experience, and you're exploring it in a way that even fewer people could ever dream of. Enjoy the spectacular views, the amazing comraderie and the fact that you're putting one foot in front of the other to achieve a goal that will stay with you a lifetime! It doesn't matter how much you run or walk or how long it takes. It just matters that you believe in yourself, and remember how hard you've trained for this, and how truly incredible it will feel when you cross the finish line. Trust me, the cramps and pain and dirt will quickly fade from your memory...and the unbelievable feat you're accomplishing will be a source of pride and amazement to you and all of us forever! Enjoy that rare combination of exhaustion and exhilaration that makes this race so unique! Cheers, Alison

Brutal day. 42C mid day with a 10 km lakebed run, 10km sand hill climb, 10km run through a rock desert section and 12km valley/hill (sand) with the camp located on top of a hill.

I have never push myself so hard, 9 hours. 10 people dropped out including one of my tentmates that passed out on the course. And tomorrow they promise will be harder and hotter.

I am dead tired and need to go to sleep so tonights message will be short.

Love and miss you Vera.

Jeff

PS the shoe choice was right, my feet are now size 13.5.

Stage one done, in just over 6 hours. Pull a thigh muscle in Stage 1 on a sand dune climb, so I couldn’t run through the deep sand in stages 2 & 3, nonetheless a good finish time, just 3 hours behind the leader, about mid pack. Not bad for an old guys. Suffering from some dehydration, and resulting muscle cramps, but will be OK Day 2. Tomorrow I’ll drink a lot more water on the course, enough so I pee on the course, which I didn’t today. Feet are good, so that’s a bonus.

Thanks to everyone for the kind wishes on my blog.T hey mean a lot, especially when I am so tired.

It’s a surreal world out here, in so many way. From sleeping in the sand, not be able wash after the race, and eating food out of a bag. It is also extremely beautiful, in a lunar sort of way. Like nothing else I’ve ever seen or will likely will see again.

My time is up. Love to my family. Miss all.

Jeff

Nicely done Papa Bear! To follow up on some of the other comments, get that water in your body and that pee in the desert; just because it's a running event doesn't mean it can't be a pissing contest too ;) Keep it up and enjoy the landscape, you're so lucky to see it first hand in a way few people from Canada ever get the chance to.

Sounds like a good first day Jeff. You're doing it! Definitely need to make sure you pee more - drink at least 1.5 litres between checkpoints - whether you want to or not. Glad to hear the feet are holding up. Take good care of them. Don't skimp on the painkillers when the muscles and joints start to protest... You can (and will) do it! Robin

Well it here, finally. All check in and ready to go. The old guy amongst the young, my grey hair standing out like a weed in a well maintained garden. I have been given my number, 43, assigned my chip and briefed on the rules and race etiquette. My pack weights more than I wanted, at 10 kilos, but in line with what I trained with all summer. The only good news is my pack will lighten as I consumer my meals, which are by far the heaviest items in combination. The buses leave at 1:30 so this will be the my last update until after stage 1 tomorrow. Thanks to one and all for your words of encouragement, of late. Stage 1 is 37.2km that takes us from Southern Lake, in the Wadi Rayan Protected area, into the area called the Desert Door. A nice gentle start, so to speak. More details can be found on the web-site. Jeff

Jeff, I shared your amazing and inspiring journey with my 13 year old son Sheldon over the weekend. The look on his face was priceless, when I told him during your training you ran many times from Toronto to Oakville. His mouth really dropped when I told him you carried a back pack with 10kilo the whole way. Your story is inspiring for many, and as we continue to follow your journey please know that my non-impressive 13 year old is beyond impressed. Best of luck to you and enjoy this amazing experience. Arrived in Cairo yesterday. The end of a 300 day journey and starting point of my epic adventure. 48 hours to the start of the race, and it can't come to soon for me. Suffering from a bit of jet lag from the trip, which I should be able to shake off over the next couple of days. Race check-in and briefings begin first thing Saturday morning and the bus leaves at 1:30PM for the 3:30 hour trip to the start, where we'll camp overnight. The race begins Sunday at 7:30AM. The latest weather forecast for the start of the race is for cooler weather, 35C-40C, I am glad I brought a jacket. Next update from the start.

20 October 2012 09:36 am (GMT-05:00) Eastern Time(US & Canada)

One week to go, 7 short days.

Of late, I have been asked by many people two questions with respect to the race. Why? And, am I scared? Yes, I am scared, scared of not finishing. Scared of letting myself down. I have put so much into preparing for this race that not finishing it would be a devastating event for me, and one I cannot dwell on as I count down the final days to the start.

I am anxious to start the race. I'm tired of second guessing my choices for comfort and nutrition. Is my pack too heavy, do I have too much or too little food, how many pairs of socks should I take  and so on. I know I have made some good decisions and some bad decisions: I simply don't know which is which, at this point.

The answer to the question - Why?. I believe every once in a while that it's healthy to take on a goal bigger than ourselves.  Something so challenging that at first glance it appears near impossible.  Something that takes us beyond our breaking-point to a place not tested by many, at least not by choice.

I will be updating my blog daily during the race, sharing my experience as best I can. In turn, you'll be able to send me words of encouragement, please do.

My next update will be from Sahara on the eve of the race.

Thanks to one and all for your words of encouragement, past and present, they mean a lot to me.

25 September 2012 01:17 am (GMT-05:00) Eastern Time(US & Canada)

Training for this race has taught me a lot about myself; first and foremost, I would make a terrible blogger. Apologies to one and all that viewed my blog only to find out I haven’t updated it since the spring.

As I near the end of my training regiment, I am feeling the impacts of eight long months of training has had on my body. I’m tired and sore. Over the past eight months, I have ran countless hours and kms, much in 35C-40C+ heat thanks to a hotter than usual Toronto summer, most of it alone. I am looking forward to the company of other in the Sahara, like minded people with the same goal in mind - to finish the race.

I wake up and go to sleep thinking about the weight of my pack, the type of food to take, the size of my shoes (1 or 2 sizes larger, or not at all) and the extras. The necessities versus the luxuries, which would be considered the latter on any other trip. I am determined to get my pack to under 7 kilos, including water. The packing and unpacking, additions and deletions continue and I am sure they will until I leave the hotel room in Cairo for the bus ride to the start.

I am often asked if I feel ready for the race. I don't know. I have never taken on a race of this length and duration, especially in such harsh conditions. I believe, I have trained hard and planned well, but only ‘sands of time’ (couldn’t help myself) will be the judge of both.

My fellow participants, especially first timers, may get some encouragement, as I did, by watching the CBC Nature of Things documentary on long distance running called The Perfect Runner at http://www.cbc.ca/natureofthings/blog/chasing-the-perfect-runner.html In brief, it suggests humans were made to run long distances over protracted periods of time. Its in our genes, supposedly.

 Let hope they are right.

31 March 2012 11:26 am (GMT-05:00) Eastern Time(US & Canada)

I completed 37km of training in week 30; total training time of 4:04. My left leg is starting to feel better so it's time to pick-up the distance as I head into week 29, as well as to focus on some soft surface running.

If you are new to ultramarathons, as am I, then I would recommend the book Relentless Forward Progress, by Bryon Powell and the accompanying website - iRunFar.com.  Both contain helpful advice and tips for new ultramarathoners.

Back to training after a two weeks rest as a result of some pulled muscles in my left leg. Pack on back, I completed 11km today and it felt pretty good. Plan to run 20 km tomorrow to test if there are any lingering issues. Currently, I am carrying approximately 3 kilos in my pack.
