Following my return from the Sahara, I embarked upon a recruiting process which culminated in six of my friends deciding to join me on the 2008 Gobi March.
Little did they realise what they had committed to. And there was no exit strategy for them. In January I’d told them that the event was almost fully booked and that they should hurry to submit their enter forms and pay their deposits. Thus the financial commitment preceded the physical commitment by some months. By the end of April, after great expense had been incurred on a range of expensive equipment and after hundreds of kilometres of training, there was no turning back for them...
I have been asked more than once: “Mike, what have I allowed you to get me into!?”
My reply: The Gobi March...; and you’ll love it!
My own preparation is not what it was going into the 2007 Sahara Race. I simply have not put in the hours. Perhaps, having completed one event, I know what’s ahead, and feel a little more confident. Well, at least that was my thinking, until this morning when I suddenly realised – one week to go. This time next Sunday I’ll have completed Stage 1!!! Now, I’m wondering whether I’m really ready.
I spent the day preparing my food and equipment but haven’t tried packing my backpack yet. I’m too afraid to try. So much to fit into such a small backpack!
Hopefully by this time on Thursday evening I’ll be in a position to report that I’m A-OK.
