The race is now pretty much over. We just have a 5km run up to the pyramids left to do tomorrow morning.
The 100km day went quite well. I ran most of the first 2 sections which took me to the 25km point. After that the terrain got quite a bit worse and was difficult to run on. Mid way to check point 3 i met up with another 2 people which was a blessing as i think i might of taken quite a bit longer if i was on my own. The 3 of us marched/ran up to the 6th check point where we were able to get hot water for food and so we took a 30 min break to re-fuel. After that i was full of energy again and we managed to do the last 35km in 5 hours and that included 14km of soft sand. Overall it took 16 hours and 3 minutes to complete and i arrived in at midnight after starting at 8am.
It is now just a case of sitting around camp relaxing and fixing some of the blisters that i got from yesterday. Then i will do the 5km run, followed by going to the hotel where lots of food and beverages will be consumed.
I will be back in the UK from Monday night
30 October 2008 03:27 am (GMT) Greenwich Mean Time: Dublin, Edinburgh, Lisbon, London
We had another 7am start which was very nice. Today was a 38km stage with the first 3 sections all between 7 and 9km and a final 14km section. I managed a nice easy run all the way to check point 3 where there was an oasis and i got to cool myself off by putting my hat in it. The final section was something which i had not been looking forward to ass doing 14km in the later sections of the day is when it gets the hottest. I managed to run for 8km but then decided to save myself and walk the remaining 6km into camp so that i can be fresh for the 100km tomorrow.
I was quite surpirsed at how easy running today was and i did an overall time of 5 hours and 27 minutes, which placed me in 29th position for today. I also had the great pleasure of overtaking Dean at check point 1, although he quickly overtook me again.
As for the 100km tomorrow. The assumption is that there is going to be a stagered start, although this hasn't been confirmed yet and we will probably find out later on tonight. But whatever happens we will all have to deal with the mid afternoon heat, which is going to be the biggest challenge for everyone. I am planning on mainly walking during the hottest sections of the day so that i can save myself for when it gets cooler in th evening.
That is it for now. I will be reporting back again on Thursday evening / Friday morning once the 100km is over.

Another fresh start this morning i am happy to announce. We started an hour earlier this morning at 7am because i thinka few competetors were coming in quite late last night. Plus today was 40km long and had sand dunes.
The first 2 sections we quite good and i managed to run almost all of it, which helped me make a bit of ground while the temperature was quite low in the morning. The third stage had 6km of open desert before we had to travel along the ridges of serveral sand dunes before getting to check point 3. After that it was a final set of sand dunes followed by 6km into camp. Overall it was a not too bad day and alot easier than yesterday, which was a surprise. I managed to finish in 5 hours 43 minutes and i think i was 32nd for the day.
My legs and shoulders are still feeling fresh and ready for day 4. Although i had to pay a small visit to the medical tent as 3 blisters on my toes had started to get to the point of causing problems. So now i have all of my toes wrapped in tape, because if a single toe is taped it will cause the other toe to blister with rubbing. It shouldn,t be too much of a bother though as i will just remove my insoles for extra space in my trainers.
I am just looking at finishing tomorrow so that i am fresh and fit for the 100km stage on day 5. Hopefully we will get to start early again and i can miss most of the mid afternoon sun so that it won,t be too bad of a day.

Good to hear you are still in decent shape.
You're creeping up that leaderboard - well done.
All the best for tomorrow - I'm sure you don't need me to tell you to take it easy - success is finishing!

Hope you have plenty of Duct tape for those blisters. I imagine you'll know about them by the end of Day 5. But hang in there, it's always a waiting game on long runs, if you just wait long enough, you'll finish :-)

I woke up this morning feeling fresh like i hadn't even ran yesterday. This day was 38km long and was supposed to begin hard and get easier as the day went on but this didn't happen.
The first and second stages were pretty much all sand and had some hills mixed in there as well. At the beginning i was expecting to walk most of this but i seem to have perfected my running ability on sand and managed to run both of these sections and arriving at check point two in 19th position. The third section was alot worse than described and what i expected and when combined with the mid afternoon sun i ended up walking the majority it. By this time i had only 8km to go and so decided to walk the remainder so that i would be fresh for the 3rd day. Overall i took about 5 hours and 35 minutes to complete day 2 and finished in 29th place.
My gaiters have been holding up well and i haven't had a grain of sand in them yet after 2 days of running. My feet are still ok with no visit to the medical tent yet and i am still feeling fresh and free of any pains. So bring on day 3 but i have a feeling i won't be saying that tomorrow as it is supposed to be getting harder over the next 2 days.
Thanks to everyone for the support emails that i have received.
Chris:
Dam you for sending me a work email. Thankfully i am in a good mood from the pain killers.
I didn't have a script to do the message comparison, i just did it by hand.

Sandy - look forward to hearing the next instalment.
You're doing great but try to go easy on the 4th stage (lots more walking please!) as you need to give yourself a bit of breather before the horror of stage 5!

27 October 2008 04:19 am (GMT) Greenwich Mean Time: Dublin, Edinburgh, Lisbon, London
After arriving at camp last night we didn`t get to see our surroundings since it was dark. But at first light we got to see the amazing canyons that we were camped in. The first race day was a 35km leg through the canyons into camp 2.
The full day took 5 hours and 13 minutes to complete, which was about 57th place. The stage was broken down into 4 sections, with the first 2 sections being not too bad and the majority of it was quite compressed and easy enough to run on, so it took about 2 1/2 hours to complete. The third stage was an evil soft sand section that was 11.5km long. At the beginning of the stage it was 38 degress in the shade and 45 in the direct sun, which was a killer and took alot of energy out of you. Thankfully the last section was only 3.2km long and was over quite quickly.
Happily i can report that i have no blister issues, my legs are feeling quite fresh and only my shoulders have a slight bit of sourness. But my enhanced pain killers are doing a lovely job at fixing that issue.
Tomorrow will be a similar day with the hard section in the first stage and the remainder being a bit more compact. Although days 3 and 4 are a completely different story and i am not even thinking about it. The long fifth day was a bit longer than anyone guessed and it is going to be 100.2km long.
I am not off to make my pack lighter by eating as much food as i am allowed and i will report back tomorrow after finishing day 2.

I have managed to bring the 4th lightest backpack as far as i know from the checkin this morning with 6.75kg. Although i have to take my hat off to the person who managed 5.5kg. I do feel alot better after the majority of people have about 10kg or more, with the largest backpack being 15.5kg.
It was a long 7 hour ride out to camp with the occasional bribing of border people who weren`t letting us through. But we got there in the end.
I am now stuffed full of food and energy drinks and ready for the race to begin tomorrow morning. I will be back with a full account of the first day tomorrow and hopefully there will be no major problems.

The time has now come.
I will be leaving London for Cairo tomorrow morning and weirdly i can't wait for Sunday come around and the event to begin. Although i am sure i will be saying something completely different on Tuesday or Wednesday.
It has been a long road getting here with the large amount of training. The few injuries that have set me back along the way. But i think that the injuries have helped me learn to be more cautious and give me a greater chance of finishing the event.
I finished packing my race pack last night and i have managed to stay close to my original goal of a 6 - 6.5kg pack without water. I am currently sitting around 6.5 - 6.75kg but i will find out the exact weight on Saturday when i have finalised my pack and got it weighed.
Below is a picture of my pack items layed out.

In the top left of the picutre is my food supply minus the pepperami. It consists of freeze dried food, a mix of nuts, pepperami and protein/energy drnk mix.
I am actually a bit worried about the last item as trying to take 1/2kg of brown powder wrapped tightly in plastic bags through an airport is quite questionable. Lets hope the customs/security people don't get the wrong idea.
The questionable brown powder in its packaging

Hopefully i will be making another blog posting before the race in Egypt. Otherwise i will have completed Day 1 and will probably be say why the hell am i doing this.

6.5Kg, thats fantastic, I'm only bringing the mandatory equipment & I ended up with 7.6Kg. I'll need to take a second look to see if I can cut back anywhere.
See you on Friday,
Ger.

Hello readers
I have been telling myself that i should start this blog for the past few months but for some reason i have never gotten round to it until now. Although thankfully my training has had a bit more motivation than my blog writing.
The story then picks up again at Christmas the year after where i am again stupidly suggesting to the same friend that we do a race called the TringToTown which involves 2 40 mile ultras over the weekend. I then did the Jurassic Coastal Challange 2008 7 weeks later where i ran into a fellow Sahara 4Deserts competitor Cleo. All was going well this year apart from the severe weather warning during day 2 and my achilies packing its bags and going home without me 13 miles into day 3. Not wanting to fail the Jurassic for a 2nd time in a row i speed marched/hobbled the last 13 miles.
I have tried a few different types of training routine over the past year. Previosly i have concentrated on running as my main source of training, but i found this didn't work too well for me. I would be able to run 20 miles and then do it again the next day but my speed wasn't improving and my knees took quite a bit of punishment.
Currently i do circuit training around 5 times a week at the moment with British Military Fitness, where the classes involves intensive upper, lower, core and running work. I also cycle or run the 6 miles each way to, from work during the week and do a long run or mountain biking at the weekend. This type of training seems to be working for me as my speed is improving and i feel that the risk of injury is lower from my older training style as i am not doing as much repetitive running.
I have also been buying and planning out my kit list and trying to figure out what weight my backpack is roughly going to be. I have also tried out some freeze dried food and found a few flavours that i can actually stand while at home so in the desert they should be luxury. Currently i have:
- Thermarest Short 3 Seasons Sleeping Mat
- PHDesign Mimus Sleeping Bag
- Raidlight Evo2 Backpack
- Some Freeze Dried Food Packs
Thats it for my first ramble but i will be back for another.
