Namib Race (2010) blog posts from Anders Kartik Jensen

Hello,

Well guys - I really don’t know where to start - I think I did it!!! ....

I had another bad night with only 4hrs of sleep, which is not really optimal, when you a going to run 100km  - the day before my good friend and former champion of sahara race 2006 'jimmi olsen' gave me a good advice (thanks for that Jimmi) that I should make a strategy and stick to it...... so I did that overnight and it was clearly to stay close to the experience guy Rafael.... But that strategi I totally had to change 200meter after the start as he took it very slow and I knew that I could keep a bit faster pace than that - so from the defending/strategy, I went to the attacking-strategy - I ran with Matt who is a 4th ranking, a great guy and really enjoyed running with him for the first 15km, whereafter he took off and I decided to keep my 10/11 km pr hr pace, where I knew I will be comfortable and all I had to do was keeping Ryan behind me..... The course was not to bad, even tough the was a lot of soft sand and sand dunes in between - but I did really had time to care abt that, that was only one thing in my mind (..and you may take a guess ) after crossing 60km mark, where I still felt good - at some points I was 10mins behind Ryan, but didn’t know that, and I couldn’t see him, but I knew that he will fight for his chance, so I couldn’t take it slow.... the last 4km I was done, I was running on the last resources and I was quite surprised to see Ryan only a few mins after I crossed the finished line in 10hrs and 43mins - this is his first race so I really have to give him some credit, he is a very good athlete...

Today is resting day and my body and legs feel fine, however I think I havent realized what I have just done, but im sure it will come tmrw..... Official im not the winner yet, but something must go grueling wrong tmrw as we ony have a 2km run.......

Everyone - thank you so much for supporting me on this race, you a def part of my victory here in Sahara..... and im glad you have been enjoing following the race.... you're are awesome!!! THANKS!!!!

thomas / Faetter - thanks for your msg, I will see if I can get a picture for you and send it to you asap....

Hola,

shit night - i only got 4 hrs of sleep, do not know why, but woke up at 12pm and couldnt fall asleep again, same problem as i had i Gobi...
worse was, what i thought should be an easy day of 38 km, turned out to be pretty brutal for the first 22 km, as my nearst competitor Ryan sat an brutal pace - before this stage i was only 20 mins in front of him in the overall result, so i couldnt really afford to loose any time before the long day tomorrow..... However, after checkpoint 2 i have to answer him again and did a speed uphill pace, which got me quite a gap - i was feeling pretty well all the time, so the last 9 km i sat it on cruise control and crossed the finish line 10 mins before Ryan...
So, it was a pretty good day afterall....

Anyhow, its all about tomorrow, the long stage of 100km - im a pretty nervous abt everything now, i have done it before, and know its a very very long way and everthing can happend... Its actually Ryans first time to do such a long strecth, but he is looking very strong and Rafael who is placed 3rd is a very experienced guy, so i really have to look out for them, as they will def attack me, as there is not much time between us.... i have abt 30min to Ryan and 1hrs 15 mins to Rafael, so i to try and defend myself and keep up with them.... As mentioned before im pretty nervous, because im not very good at the 100km, so you will def not see a winner tomorrow, it will more be like a guy who is trying to survive and minimize the time loose, so i can keep the 1st place....

god damn im nervous and excited....

Thanks for all the emails guys im so thanksfull and will def think abt it tomorrow, when im going to the crisis outthere....

Jeri  - thanks for the tip i wil def remeber them / good you brought that up :o)

Munkish - yeah, lets see after tomorrow, if you still want your name on my shirt :o)

Kh Morten

Hey Anders, Congratulations!!! What an amazing achievement! You have done what you set out to do and even with the pressure of Ryan pushing you hard all the way, you rose to the challenge every day. You are amazing - your focus and determination are so inspiring. We'll celebrate when you get back to Singapore!

Hej Igen.

Posted On: 07 Oct 2010 05:43 pm

Posted On: 07 Oct 2010 05:15 pm

Hey fætter A! Endnu engang: Stort tillykke! Mange hilsner Thomas

ANDERS!!!!!!! You're an absolute STAR!!!! Massive cheers from me and the girls, you've only just gone and won the whole blinking race! The last day will be a walk in the park. Huge respect to you on a truly amazing and nail-biting race! Loved every cliffhanging update, well done!!! I've run out of adjectives, but you really are my hero now .. when I grow up, I want to run like you! Big hugs and lots of excited squeals! Jeri :D (p.s. Halle, Jess and the two Evas etc send their love xx)

Posted On: 07 Oct 2010 02:10 pm

Hej min ven. :)

Posted On: 07 Oct 2010 10:13 am

Way to rock Anders, now I know why I was always scared to join you on those MacRitchie runs. Just think up and down east coast park. Sleep is for wimps. Eat well and stay hydrated...you skinny dudes don't carry the spare tire of old guys like me. Be happy you don't have the humidity of Singapore and are ready for the heat. We are really psyched for you. No pressure, just do what you know you can.

Posted On: 07 Oct 2010 06:50 am

Skype, when back in Singapugisch! Buena suerte hombre!!

Posted On: 07 Oct 2010 04:27 am

Way to go Anders. Make Singapore proud.

Posted On: 07 Oct 2010 01:11 am

Oh Anders, just stay calm and cool. You already have the time advantage - and no matter how slight, it is still an advantage! Remember the long day is all about consistency, although I'm sure by the time you read this you would have finished Day 5 already :) xx

05 October 2010 12:00 pm (GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi

hi all,

I felt pretty good this morning, despite that I was pushing it too hard yesterday..... anyways, I really wanted to take an easy day not to make the same mistake as yesterday and also due to the course terrain and distance (42km)..... however that was a bit naïve thinking from my side, as I have to other competitors who is close to me, so they really made life tough and made me work hard out there. Now I can actually say I have done a full marathon in soft sand and sand dunes, god damn that was tough... the 3 of us ryan, rafael and myself ran most of the way together, but after checkpoint 3, rafael felt back and rayn and me continued in a very good and fast pace....After the last check point 4, which was the last one, we still held a fast pace, however 5 km before the finish line I had to try and see if I could get my third victory, thus I increased the pace even tough that is was really soft sand and lucky I could cross the finish line 2 mins before ryan........

I think that as all for now.

Take care and again, thanks for all the support :o)

Well done again Anders! I like that last bit when you pulled away. That's epic. 42km on soft sand - that makes the Gobi a piece of cake. Well, onwards to day 4 and beyond. It's all a mental game now, you know that don't you? Stay strong mentally - that will take your body and legs far beyond what they are capable of. Remember what Lance Armstrong said, pain is temporary, quitting is forever. Dream BIG!

Posted On: 06 Oct 2010 01:09 am

Saadan Anders! Er det planen at du vil tage alle etaperne ;-) No 1!!!!

04 October 2010 11:47 am (GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi

hi again,

hmmmmmmmmm - where to start..... i felt pretty good this morgning for stage 2 total km 35km - we started at 6.30am so the heat wasent that bad all day....
the first 11km was in vechile tracks, so that was not to bad, so my plan was to get a bit of a gap from the others before we hit the second leg with sanddunes and soft sand  - however the second wasent that bad at all, and i got a pretty good lead until check point 2 where i have been pushing myself 100 pct - thereafter it got pretty tough with softsand, but i still managed to keep an okay phase, but had to slow down - after check point 3 to the finish line it was basically soft sand all the way with hilly dunes included, appr 5.6km and i had to realize that i have been pushing it too hard, as i felt pretty bad and sick when i crossed the finished line, 9 lucky mins before number 2, who really catched up on me on the last leg - and he should def have credit for that, as it was so bloody tough... have now been resting and feel better now, but still not 100 pct....

tomorrow its 42km, which should be pretty tough, so the plan is to take it slow as there is still a long way to the finish line in Cairo, so dont expect a winner :o), know i saidd the same yday, but when you running no/bib no has been replaced with a sign where it says 'leader' its def put you under some kind of pressure.

thats all from me  / once again thanks the support, youre awesome and it def helps me to keep the phase outthere!

hi everyone,

just a little update from yday - we drove for apprx 3 hrs to desert and arrived in the dark at 6pm  - and i cant forget how hot it was - those people who knows me, know that im very happy abt hot wheather, but this was just crazy and last time was it was so cold in the night time...

anyways, pretty crazy day at the office  - we headed off at 7pm and the heat wasent to bad at that point of time. the first two check points apprx 20km total was in soft sand i would say, but apparently the organizers are in a difffent opinion, so def not looking forward for tomorrows stage, where is dunes day and soft sand all over.... anyways, back again to todays stage - after the 20km, the last 17km was not to bad, beside the heat, which was awful and i have to admit that i have been underestimate that a bit -and guys if def hotter than Singapore, it seriously like standing under a hair-drier.... that being said, believe it or not but i was in the lead all the way, but closely followed by american Ryan Benette, which was pretty close to me at a point, as i ran the wrong way...... i actually thought that he would get on the last 8km, but apparantly he told me that he was also struggling with the heat.... So right now im pretty satisfied abt my first stagev-win, but a bit nervous abt tomorrow as the injury i got on wednesday is not too good at the moment, so dont expect a winner........ :o)

and hey if anyone see a choppy indian guy an egyptian channel, then its me - if def not gonna be a movie -star, but you\re all probably knew that :o)

thats all for now

by the way, thanks for all the support, you rooooock and keep 'em coming.... and hey JERI - the Margarita blocks def saved me today, thanks for that :o)
