Today is the rest day, positioned by a big lake in searing heat with swarms of flies. Trying to chill out alyhough my body is in tatters.
So the long day, 95km through sand, dunes and some shingle. Was very very tough, don't think i have ever pushed myself so hard and still feeling very ill as i am writing this. Tempreture I am guessing was mid to high 40s. A couple of us ran the wrong way for a km or so which was pretty annoying, and managed to get to the sleep-over tent at 3pm and pressed on through, but i could not find my bins (glasses), and as in 2008 I had to slow considerably as i could not see much and hurt my knee. Think in all i ran for 80km, which i would highly not recommend.
The course itself, whilst beautiful was exceptionally tough with deep sand through much of it. For good measure we also went up and over some dunes half way round. We went through the valley of the whales, some whale bones and stuff.
Last night as Chris will attest to was rubbish, every muscle and joint screaming "what are you doing", very little sleep and managed to source some darts from the locals, better exchange rate than last time too which was nice.
Time is approx 11am, and still people coming in - 28 hours later. Just resting at the camp today trying to stay away from electrolytes and freee dried food. Am now looking forward to pizza and beer at the finish, I think we will have to run 2km tomorrow.
Chris glad you are recovering buddy, and thanks for the constant stream of motivational blogs and e-mails, as you know they are so encouraging. To everyone else thank you very much for all your messages and support. Whist a very physical event, it is an incredibly tough emotional and pyschological event, so after finishing a day and putting your body through hell it is fantastic to read such supportive messages - a huge thank you
Helen, have a great time in Antigua and can;t wait to see you next Tuesday, enjoy yourself the girls are in good hands. You deserve it.
Right off for a coffee and fag
Thanks again everyone and look forward to catching up on my return

Phase 4 dusted, terrain was more soft sand and dunes to begin with followed by long stretches of shingle and sand type stuff, not sure where i came as the guys have whipped the results away, think it was either 8th or 9th and may have made a couple of places overall.
Have heard Chris got back to the UK, i guess on Tuesday, not sure though as the days all blend into one. He is still feeling rough which indicates it was an illness he was running with, a supreme effort by him to run a marathon in this heat and deep sand - not sure i could have done it.
Getting very bored on freeze dried food now, struggling to get the calories down. Biggest issue for me is the lack of sleep. I have only been getting a max of 3 hours a night and am now running on empty, one of the South African dudes is giving me half a sleeping pill tonight as the thought of running 95km with no sleep is not very appealing. Fortunately we start at 6.30am tomorrow as there was some talk of the top group leaving 3 hours later, also had a spot bag check when we got in, just as well i did not start dumping stuff.
So the plan tonight is to force all food down without it coming back up, pop a sleeping tablet and just run and run tomorrow, plan to stop running when it gets dark - although that is very much dependant on my achillies and my kneen is now starting to fall apart.
Chris, thanks for the mails and noted, will give it a proper go and see what happens, my body is in tatters so it may go all wrong. Everyone here all very keen to catch up on our return, much better crowd than last time.
Looking forward to getting back to Cairo and having a shower and shave, order some fresh fruit and get a beer and the obligatory expresso. Most of all looking forward to getting back and seeing my two lovely daughters and wife, who i miss very much and catching up with Chris for a much deserved beer

Lee, fantastic to read that story. I am totally impressed - and I am sure, we will find some time later in 2010 to share your Sahara experiences :-) CU in London in 10 days! Best regards from Munich, Bavaria, Germany!

Great effort on that last leg. You've broken the back of it now so try and enjoy the final stages and if it gets tough, just picture that ice cold beer
Cheers

Hi Daddy
Fantastic that you managed the long tough leg. Enjoy the final run in. You must be very proud of your acheivement and final position. Perhaps next time you can push us in the "all terrain" buggy. Hugs and kisses.See you Sunday evening.

Well done Lee. You truly are a legend! Great effort so far and hope the thought of Cairo a few days away is lifting your spirits. Don't forget all the hours of training and all the sacrifices along the way - so try and enjoy the moment, whatever the race throws at you! Cheers and good luck.

Lee you are doing amazingly well and we are all rooting for you here! Well done on being the leading Brit, keep going (not sure if you have finished yet) and hope the grub is much better when you get back to Cairo.
Posted On: 07 Oct 2010 09:25 am
Well done for a fantastic effort! By the time you get this the worst will be over and you'll be on the home run after a well deserved rest day. Top tip for food on the rest day is to swap whatever you have left with someone else. It might still be dehydrated, but it will be different which should make it easier to swallow. The locals might also have some fresh stuff, but beware Chris's bug! Best of luck.

ciao bella,
Now talking fluent italian since my only tent mates are now two italian girls and a guy, which makes for an interesting bedtime.
Today was carnage - very hot, soft sand and dunes with a plateau with no wind. The most difficult stage so far, it was 42km and that was after a couple of hours sleep due to a sand storm, which covered everything in sand and felt like the tent was going to take off, think I posted around 8th today - although the only thing that mattered was hitting the finish line and getting some scoff. Suffering a bit with my achilies today over the dunes, the landscape was stunning at least for the first 20 km, it hurt too much to really take notice there on in.
People here are really cool, Chris everyone has been asking after you and want to swap details - I will take details and pass them on.
People are still coming in now at 7pm, we started at 6.30am. Absolutely shattered but cant go to bed just yet as most the camp is welcoming in the late comers and drums play everytime someone comes into camp. Food is truly awful, feel pretty sick on this freeze dried muck so looking forward to getting some decent food and an ice cold beer.

Amazing effort and keep going! Sorry to here about Chris, but I am sure the Italians will keep you amused - just don't try and steal their luggage ;-) !
Posted On: 06 Oct 2010 09:57 am
Lee,
Super effort, keep your chins up and your mind focussed on the goal ahead - the race, not the Italian sort, in case of any confusion.
We are all thinking of you back here.
Chris, awful news, must be very disappointing. Still, a magnificent effort to get through to the first stage. Hope you have made a full recovery.
Posted On: 06 Oct 2010 07:28 am
Lee huge effort buddy - keep going and let us know how the Italian thing works out ... perhaps we should send you a phrasebook?
Posted On: 06 Oct 2010 07:18 am
Keep going Lee all that training will bring you home... An absolutley awesome performance !!!
Posted On: 05 Oct 2010 09:26 pm
Another awesome day today buddy. Hopefully tomorrow will be better terrain. Try this one on the Italians... "Avete di più grande biancheria intima?" Very best of luck for tomorrow - really sorry not to be out there with you.
Posted On: 05 Oct 2010 08:28 pm
Well done so far. Keep going. Note your new tent mates: concentrate on the Italian language and not Italian male behaviour!!
See you in a while with a good meal

This is a rubbish holiday, don't like sun, sand or freeze dried food.
Bad news I'm afraid today, Chris had to pull out due to illness, before that he produced a monumental effort to make it to the first checkpoint - Emma, I did stay with him to that point and left him in the the safe hands of the organisers and medical staff. I have since heard after a 4.5 hour wait they transported him back to Cairo where I'm relieved to report he is apparently feeling a bit better. Hope you feel better soon mate.
Today was more of the same, flippin hot and very sandy with a couple of 300-400m sand dunes to boot, but the really hard part for me now begins without Chris to look after me. Today's camp is on top of a large dune and the wind is very strong and getting sand everywhere, my lighter now longer works and am going to have to start bribing the locals again soon.
Won't go on for too long as pretty down Chris is not here,I seem to be going well in the standings, am feeling pretty strong and will see what the next three days brings. Lot of people ill, injured or with messed up feet - not one blister for me yet, which may stand me in good stead for the next three days.
Really missing Hels, Yass & Ash, as was Chris missing Emma and the kids. Anyway off to get some freeze dried shepherds pie..mmmm and have a fag. Drums have just started which means people are just coming in after nearly 12hrs on the course, don't know how those guys do it and then start in 12 hours with the same again, whilst preparing in the dark (gets dark around 6.30ish)
Just want to sign off with a big thank-you for all the mails and blogs, it really does provide encouragement especially during the down times which are pretty emotional.
All the best
Lee

Sorry to hear Chris has not been well- that was you at the beginning last time I seem to remember? It must be very disappointing for him. I can see how it is hard for you too Lee. You are doing so well though - you must be really pleased with yourself.
I guess doing this a second time is a bit like child birth - you know what is coming - the pain, the good/the bad etc. You have been excitedly waiting for this for such a long time too- another monumental adventure and challenge! You know that you completed it last time - in a really good time too so I am sure you will focus on that.
Hope you collect lots of support along the way tommo.
Best wishes
Louise

Well that was bloody hard work. Stage 1 kicked off at 7am this morning. First off was a 9km stage over sand dunes in what was already shaping up to be a very hot day. It was quickly clear that I didn't have the legs to keep at Lee's pace so by checkpoint 1 we decided to run our own races. Lee had a great run although suffered from the heat and cramp but managed a fantastic result of four and half hours which placed him 6 (we think). I started to suffer from dehydration from what seems to be a stomach bug to had to take it easy for the second half of the race, arriving about an hour after Lee. Competitors are still coming as we write this, 9.5 hours after the start.

Just heard the breaking news that you had to pull up, Chris. The stomach bug was clearly worse than you let on in the blog. Well done for giving it a go today. Look after yourself and get rehydrated. And look after Lee when he gets in and don't forget the anti-bac. Go Lee! xx

And it's flipping hot. Very relaxed trip yesterday, bags arrived and met a few familiar faces from 2006 and 2008. Spent a couple of hours last night bagging up food, packing and repacking our packs. We weren't sure whether we'd be able to fit everything into our 25litre packs but after being pretty ruthless with the luxuries (like toilet roll, cups etc) we've managed to get everything in wilst still carrying more food than in '08. Lee couldn't be persuaded to leave his razor and deodorant behind but nevertheless the bags only weigh 7.5kg. More packing of packs and a quick 10km jog this morning. Love all of the blog comment, keep them coming. Very relaxed afternoon ahead. We have a race briefing at 9am tomorrow (hopefully the hangover will have cleared) and a kit check at 11 followed by a 3.5 hour bus trip to the camp for Sundays start. Will prob post again later today. Thank again for all of the emails, texts and calls. Really appreciate all of the support.

29 September 2010 02:40 am (GMT) Greenwich Mean Time: Dublin, Edinburgh, Lisbon, London
This is our final day before heading out to Egypt. Unfortunately we're again going to be missing Tom, who would have been the third member of Team Stanton, due to a recently torn calf. We'll miss having you with us in the Sahara Tom.
We're almost packed - a few last minute changes largely as a result of smaller packs but larger quantity of kit and food. We had a very hungry rest day last time!
We're both really looking forward to starting the race. We've had a number of niggling little injuries but everything now seems to have settled down. We've limited the training this week to a few shorter runs to ensure that we don't seize up and manage to get some rest.
Please do send us emails and blog comments during the race, it will be great to hear from you all. We'll probably post again before we fly and on Friday from Cairo.

Good luck to you both - really enjoyed tracking your progress last time and seeing how your were getting on. Wishing you both good health and light packs! Am curious if you packed the dehydrated wine again this year or not?
Cheers Louise

Good luck boys….
Lee ….don’t forget to pack the ciggies … they can be awfully expensive outside Cairo.
Chris …. I hope you are looking forward to a week of childcare... at least it will remind of the kids!!.
