we expected to complete stage 5 in 16 hours........we arrived at base camp at 9am this morning after 24.5hours!!! i can`t begin to explain the sequence of events that took place during the week to produce the hardest day of all of our physical lives.

Dog, what an effort! he ended up injecting his knees 10 times with some type of steroid administered by our legendary team doctor, Crabs. i can honestly say we would not have all made it across the line without him.

Billy `bent beak billy goat` Biffin! .......let me say most people would have died if they had experienced what he has over the past 36 hours! Billy almost did........ suffering from a starined groin injuury, plied with pain killers and antibiotics, and debilitated by nausea and low blood pressure, he practically walked the 78km without being able to hold in any food or water and dry reaching every hour or so. needless to say he was daaaaaaangerously dehydrated and if not for the constant suppervision of crabs, i would say he would have been pulled by the officials. what a guy! what an effort! he is currently in the medical tent with a drip in his arm, enjoying the constant attention of the magical medical staff.

critta and dapper.....strong! kept taking turns taking the lead and motivating the team.

me....well i am happy to have finished. i feel good...... this was a life changing experience. the scenery, the people, the physical and mental brutality....... the human body and mind have incredible limits. i trust i have reached the limit of mine and will not contemplate another event like this....... well maybe not for a year or so!

12 June 2008 07:55 am (GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi

critsy 6 hours, me 8.5 hours, billy 9.5 hours, dog, dapper and crabs 11.5 hours.

we started the day with a 2km hike up the steps of heaven`s gate. critsy flew, billy looked good and the rest of us struggled with altitude problems.

this was followed by 7 mountains to get to the second check point. holy cow! by the last mountain i was pushing off my knees to take each step.

i was able to pick up a bit of speed in the 3rd stage which was 12km long and mostly down hill along a dry river bed. i was looking good until i hit a few streams at the beginning of the 4th and final leg. my feet started to deteriorate quickly. the support crew told us it was an 11km leg but it turned out to be 13.8km. i am not sure you can fathom the disappointment a mistake like that creates. by the time i crossed the line i was hobbling.

i watched the others cross the line and given some did not arrive until 7.30pm, it will be a super human effort for them to finish the 77km run tomorrow.

despite this i am looking forward to tomorrow because (besides being the final hard section of the race) we will all be walk/running together. we intend to enjoy some of the spectacular scenery and take a dip in a stream a long the way...maybe take a few snaps.

final notes......crabs looks good and pulled dapper along to finish today. great to see him back in form. dapper looked pretty sapped by the end. he suffered from altitude sickness. dog`s legs and shins are finally giving in. he has injection ready to go so we will see if he needs them tomorrow. billy`the billy goat` biffin looked strong as an oxe despite his strained groin muscle. he said he would have died with out the poles. crabs replied `if you die you die`. this is the team motto.

we can barely stomach food and if i never see another bottle of water......! taste buds are shot!

so, i am anticipating tomorrow will take around 20 hours. we leave at 6am for a 1.5 hour bus ride before starting.  wish us luck.....we are going to need it!

Go Team

Posted On: 13 Jun 2008 07:24 am

MY GOD!! I just saw your time for stage 5 - I cannot comprehend being on the go for 24 hours - super human effort just on that alone. Amazing. Final stage is just a lazy 17km - you will do it in your sleep - literally. Go guys - once more for the kipper!!

Posted On: 13 Jun 2008 07:22 am

You guys are amazing...24:08h is a super human effort covering 80km at altitude and in average terrain...just reading the course report made my feet feel sore let alone completing that distance AFTER 4 days of 40km each day. Tomorrow's 17km stretch will seem a walk in the park in comparison. Hope the heat has not been so bad today that it interfered with your sleep recovery after such a long haul. Enjoy the final stretch and the celebrations of going under that banner one last time...we are cheering from Sydney. xx

Posted On: 13 Jun 2008 05:05 am

Keep going Patsy, no guts no glory. Hanging out to hear news of how you guys are going. Best of luck! Rag

Posted On: 13 Jun 2008 03:57 am

Hey boys, we continue to follow your amazing journey and can't imagine the mental and physical pain your going through. Stay strong and by the time you are reading this their will be light at the end of a bloody long tunnel!!

Posted On: 13 Jun 2008 02:55 am

PATSY!!!!!!!!!!! We are all soooooo inspired by your efforts!! Can't stop thinking about what you are going through today - makes the fact that the pool guys have put our pool in the wrong place seem, well, meaningless (he he!). Looking forward to hearing all about your adventures over a long Sunday dinner with plenty of Mikey's red flowing. In the meantime we're toasting your health and stamina and can't wait for Lizzie to get her man back!! Lots of love, Mikey, Georgia and Jane (not Mrs Simkovic!)

Posted On: 13 Jun 2008 01:21 am

Who is the"42 year old enormously tall James A Prendiville with the deep baritone voice"? What has the Gobi done to you? Will we recognise you on your return? Or has Jamie died and been replaced by an alien life=form? No wonder the motto 'If you die, you die' is so devil-may-care. I'm in awe of your performance, especially at altitude. Enjoy the post-race holiday. XX Pammy

Posted On: 13 Jun 2008 01:19 am

Go Mr Pat Go!!! We are praying for you every night! The boys keep asking "why is Mr Pat walking thru the desert all week?" Cos he's a hero!

Posted On: 12 Jun 2008 11:09 am

Boys it is outstanding. The physical and mental pain that you are going through is extraordinary. One more leg to go - you can do it. Then a light 10k to finish  Keep the support for each other. All our luck for tomorrow. You can do it. Mikey, Jane and Georgia

Posted On: 12 Jun 2008 09:21 am

ohhhhh - I am in pain reading. What you are all feeling I just can't imagine. Keep going boys. By the time you read this your 77km day will be over and it will all be downhill (we hope (-:). Love xx

11 June 2008 04:05 am (GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi

i have been assigned the job of writing today`s blog as brother jamie is dying in our team tent. nauseas, blistered, burnt, fatigued...you name it, he is feeling it!

the day started with everyone in good spirits, but that feeling was extinguished quickly as we crossed 5 streams and duely considered sogging wet shoes. we all had a varied assortment of blisters so the wet was not helping.

the second and third stages of today had us trekking to spectacular positions at the top of peaks. the scenery here is truly breathtaking.

the 4th stage was essentially up hill......for 9km! .......to a altitude of 10000 feet. plenty of headaches, short breath and nausea.

brother michael can in first......ran the first 2.5 stages and came in around 24th. great effort and he is back to form after a couple of difficult days.

i came in next at around the 6.5 hour mark and watched as dapper dawson, brother garry and brother jamie crossed the line in good time. garry looked fresh as a daisy. dapper and crabs were on their last legs.

despite assurances from the support crew that this was to be one of the easier days, it was in my view the hardest. and i can`t see it getting any easier given our fitness levels and deteriorating health.

tomorrow we assend another 1000 feet on what the locals call 'stairs to heaven'. hope the name is not ominous of our plight!

it`s 9 pm and still around 35 degrees. the heat is killing us as you cannot escape. and what we thought would be gourmet food for the journey has become almost unpalatable. believe it or not but all i can think about is 2 minute noodles.........

1 day left before the BIG GOBI MARCH (77km). need to keep the body intact until then.

sleep well.

Fabulous coverage from you Bada, and the rest of the team. As I lay in bed last night I was wondering if you all slpet well at night given each day's exertion or the aches, pain, and heat were keeping you awake...my guess is the latter. Prayers and good wishes with you today as you trek the Long March. Keep smiling boys! cheers, the Sydney Prendis

On considering your plight I came across this from Victor Frankl "We can discover this meaning in life in three different ways: (1) by doing a deed; (2) by experiencing a value; and (3) by suffering." So have faith boys, one would hope you know what the meaning of life is after this! Courage to you all. Di xx

Well....what can I say. the first day was beyond our expectation..........i mean really HARD!

quite a few people have dropped out. one guy got carted away in an ambulance and another was found collapsed along the track. our team was also hit hard......brother michael blew all four tyres at the 20km mark and had to be treated at the 30km mark. He hobled home on a couple of wobbly spares! ........altitude problems I think!

brother jamie was treated for low blood volume at the end. he looked like death and has spent the last 3 hours trying to repair his body chemistry.

mark dawson and brother garry walked the track and seem to be in reasonable condition.....just a few feet issues.
i had to stop and treat 2 blisters so not a good start.....the 7 streams we ran thru at the beginning of the race did not help but i was surprised at how fast the shoes and socks dried out.

i could not stay hydrated so will need to improve my water and electrolyte systems. we are all exhauseted... but.... morale is high and looking forward to tomorrow...... a few adjustments to make before tomorrow morning.

the conditions are hot....real hot..... and it does not get dark till 10pm so hard to get away from the heat. the gobi desert is beautiful.....incredible mountains adn i9ce cold streams everywhere..the people are beautiful and friendly.

day 1 has been dramatic and was one of the easy courses. need to take care of oursleves. everyone is dumping equipment. i will go a bit slower tomorrow.

i received everyones blogs and it is great to see the support for our team and the support for the scott kirkbride foundation.

signing out for now but stay tuned for more.

cheers patrick.

09 June 2008 11:44 am (GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi

Started low grade training for the Gobi March 18 months ago & SERIOUS training began in January 2008.
Despite competing as 6 individuals in the Gobi March we had a common cause of raising money for the Scott Kirkbride Melanoma Research Centre.
Our expectations of the Gobi were that we were going to have an extremely tough time in the driest & unpredictable deserts in the world.
The dirty half dozen finally got to the Gobi after 23 hours of air flights & a 3 hours bus trip to the beautiful rural setting of Gazi. Our eyeballs hanging out of our heads, we expected very average food & boring pre-event lectures. When we got off the bus we were surprised to see one of the greatest welcomes you could ever see. In a territory that has seldom seen Westerners we were greeted by fanfare of local dignitaries & local villagers. They cheered us as we walked from the bus to the local feast put on in our honour.
The next day was race day & all the competitors were chaffing at the bit to get going. We started at approximately 6000 feet in 35 degree heat…..it was on for young & old! The world class competitors sprinted off into the distance (including my brother Critta), whilst the more intelligent veterans traveled at gentleman’s pace. Despite this the conditions took their toll on all of us. I hit the wall at the 28km mark with dizziness & nausea due to fluid balance issues. Critta also popped all four tyres around this mark in the race. One of the things that kept us going was all of the money owing to the Scott Kirkbride Melanoma Research Centre. We survived with cramps & aches & pains. Billy Bentbeak Biffin was the outstanding performer on the day….coming in 33rd position.
We are now in recovery mode & will give the next update ASAP.

Regards

Jamie Prendiville

Still, I feel good and ready for the task ahead. So stick with me.....I'll try to keep you posted. Lizzie just reminded me that I have a bruised shin muscle....thanks Lizzie! The adventure begins!

06 April 2008 01:07 am (GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi

Well, here we go! This is my first ever blog and I start with only eight weeks left of training left before heading off to conquer the great Gobi. I should tell you that I am not a seasoned ultra marathonist. In fact I am not even a long distance runner. So despite my Teams great training efforts, I remain a little concerned that I haved bitten off more than I can chew. So far I am feeling comfortable with 30km run/walks with pack.....but that is a only once a week effort. In the next few weeks we will need to tie a few together on consecutive days to see how we go. It's been fun so far......
