Well, we did it. 80 km, 50 miles, yesterday. We started at 8 am and I again was feeling bad. Just so tired and really worried about the heat. John was awesome again. We held hands and walked slow and put one foot in front of the other. We took the day super slow. This day is called the long march, because the distance obviously. The day is different because there is a check point where you can rest, has hot water and get medical care. It was 50 km and took 12 hours to get there. The heat was unbelievable some said 45 C other 47 C. I have never been in that heat before, let alone carry a pack. We rested at the check points longer than normal to cool down, as well as when there was shade, not much, we rested. I was very glad we did because there were some people really struggling. At check point five, we took our shoes off, ate and hung out for a couple hours. Sun does not set till late. We waited till it went down and then headed out for the last 30 km. that was really hard to get going again. Poor johns feet are really bad. He has so many blisters. He was amazing though, we cranked the last 30 km and got in at 4 AM. You could see the finish line in the distance and it seemed like it was never going to end. Finally we made it and collapsed in our tent. Last person to come in was at 10 AM. She is a rock star. We are all now hanging out at camp with the worst wind I have ever seen, hope our tents stay put. Now we just have tomorrow which is about 7 miles or so. We just want to finish! Everybody is in rough shape limping around camp. We all have our feet up in the shade. We miss you all and cant wait to come home. Thanks for the prayers, we would not have come this far without them!!!

I (we) can do all things...Another 42 km done. this morning was really hard for me, leah. Last night was really cold and the tents were set up on rocks so I got, no joke, about 30 minutes of sleep. I looked at my watch at 430 am and then got woken up by the early risers. Woke up super nauseated mostly because of sleep deprivation, but managed to get breakfast down. Took a Zofran and got better. I really did not want to continue, but john was awesome and said lets just go to the first check point. 8 km. after that I was a little better and we even ran some today. We got to check point three and that heat we have be3n waiting for is finally here. We took the last 11 k super slow. We got in and are now getting ready for the 50 miles we will do tomorrow. every day has a cut off time. Tomorrow is 36 hours.

Leah, I am nearly in tears reading your thoughts. I am so impressed with what you guys are doing. Amazing stuff. You guys are experiencing more in a week than most get to in a year... the emotions, the physical aspects, the sights and sounds. I am very proud of you.

Great job! Almost there! We are praying for you! Fight the good fight! I'm glad you two can be there for each other and take turns encouraging one another. Such a good strategy to just look to making it to the next checkpoint. I can't imagine how hard this race is even with an un-sprained ankle. You are both doing great!

I cry everyday when I read your update! (Pregnancy hormones probably) but I just love your love! For adventure, for Chop Point, for life, but mostly for each other. WOW! What an amazing team you are and what stories you will have to tell. Go Team Elias!!

Praying!!! Whether you stop or continue - you are heros in our eyes! I like the one-checkpoint-at-a-time idea. Always good to break things down into shorter pieces! (works for me - cleaning - too, sometimes!) Keep LOOKingUP! Hope you have made a few new friends along the way. MORE praying!! :-)

This kind of rigor is unbelievable. I can't help but think that all of this somehow qualifies you for something much, much bigger! Tests and trials are the single path to success and usability in the Christian life, and you have both submitted yourselves to a very large test. May this entire experience carve out within your hearts a very large space, that will be filled with God's grace, for both for you, and for others! Who knows what's ahead?! But certainly much good, and much of vital importance, for those among God's people who are willing to shoulder it. "Many are called, but few are chosen". God grant you every bit of necessary strength to "complete the race, and run the course", as the Apostle Paul said! Thrilled, pleased, and at the same time very anxious for you both. With much love...

Hey Chick, you just keep your eye on the prize! You guys are doing amazing! If it wasnt hard, we would all try it, and not just cheer you on from my couch. (sorry, dont think about couches...) One step at a time, dont eat any meaqt, your almost there!! A

Wow! I am in awe of what you guys have accomplished! Seriously... It is crazy! I might have driven 40 miles today but I couldn't even imagine how long it would take me to walk it. (Never mind run because I wouldn't survive that at all.) Congrats!

the variety of the Gobi is so daunting - glad to hear you're feeling well enough to get some running in - keep at it - checkpoint by checkpoint - just think you've already come so far - only 55mi to go - 2/3 of the way there - i'm sure that pack is starting to feel much lighter now - you guys are doing awesome

03 June 2015 02:34 am (GMT-05:00) Eastern Time(US & Canada)

Well today we can say we have experienced the full range of weather that the Gobi has to offer. It snowed the first day, poured yesterday, and was baking hot today. Luckily, today was flat and we were able to get out of the sun a little after 4. The race has certainly been a team effort for Leah and me. She needed help day one with her twisted ankle. Last night after finishing I had a touch of hypothermia and combined with not enough calories in, I almost passed out. Leah nursed me back to health and I was back in fighting form this morning.

Camp is abuzz with excitement as we all prepare for the 50 mile long march tomorrow. Spirits are high as we hobble about with perhaps a little spring in our steps. I don't think I've ever seen so much KT tape in one place. Foot care is the top priority every day. At this point, even my blisters have blisters. It's ok though, it will all be over soon.

John, how can we say enough about your love and tender regard for Leah? This is highly instructive to all of us, and sets an enormously valuable example. The Scriptures themselves contain such important examples of the solicitude of godly husbands for wives whom circumstance made dependent upon their help. You are enriching our lives by what you are, and have been, doing. And we admire you greatly for it! With all of our love...

You guys rock! Can't believe everything you've gone through And still have good spirits! We pray for you often!! Love you both so much!!!!

02 June 2015 02:36 am (GMT-05:00) Eastern Time(US & Canada)

Hello everyone, leah again. We did another 42 km today. Ran a little and the ankle held up, but still don't want to risk it, want to finish. Thank you for your prayers they were felt! Today was hard lots of up and down rocks and then the cold wind and rain set in for the last 17 km. it was pretty discouraging. We made it though and they have brought in buses to warm up and dry our stuff. I must say this is getting hard but we just take one check point at a time. Have another 42 km again tomorrow. We hope it doesn't rain again. So far people are comparing this to the Iceland race. First day we had snow, second day up an icy incline for 600 meters this is the coldest desert race. Not what we expected. Our packs get less each day and that is nice. Please keep the prayers coming. We are feeling them and will need them every step of the way!

We're often here, Leah, looking for your blogs! Wow... what a rugged, difficult experience! Can hardly imagine it. God grant you much fortitude and perseverance. And all of this on an injured ankle... We're on the edge of our seats..., you can count on it. Much love and prayers to you both.

01 June 2015 03:24 am (GMT-05:00) Eastern Time(US & Canada)

Leah writing today. As you know I sprained my ankle pretty badly yesterday at 2 k. totally discouraging. But I managed to make it through. When I woke up today I could barely walk to the bathroom and thought the race was over for me. Then I put some kt tape on it took some Tylenol and it felt a little better. We had a huge 600 meter climb through ice and snow from the start. Then it was mostly downhill. It was hard but we finished! 40km today. It stinks because we trained to run and are forced to walk due to my ankle. Truthfully I can't believe we are still going and not in last place. The mountains are beautiful and the walking lets you enjoy the view! We are still in this even though my expectations have had to change and the running is over. (We tried about a

Sorry to hear about your ankle Leah! I hope it gets feeling much better! Doesn't Maine have a wife carrying contest with a race? You could practice for that during your race there so your ankle gets better. Hugs!

SOO sorry to hear about your injury! Save your strenth and ankle to outrun the rabid musk ox. (should the occasion arise). Well, at least you can take spectacular picures and have the time to enjoy the vistas. You aren't missing much here, lots of rain and cold. Take good care!!

This is a really inspiring and uplifting post, Leah! We can hardly imagine how you have accomplished so much, considering the injury. Your comments about the scenery remind me of Psalm 121: "I will lift up my eyes to the hills-- From whence comes my help? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth..." We admire your courage and determination, and feel as if we are ascending and descending the trails of the race with you both. With all of our love...

Well we survived stage1 of the Gobi March, a 23 mile run that included sand dunes, fantastic mountain views, and a small blizzard that was reminiscent of training in Maine.

Stage 1 done! SO sorry to hear about the ankle. I know that can make you dread tomorrow. Its pretty impressive you were able to make it to the end w an injury! You just never know with the changing terrain. We are praying for your ankle to heal up overnight. And praying for some good rest for you both. Remember, every day is a different experience out there- I struggled on days 1 and 3 the most physically and emotionally ...They told me, typically Once you get past day 3 you can be confident you will finish. You guys are awesome! You will rock the Gobi desert. Following you guys and praying

I looked at the photos from the first day. You guys look good. The best photos are the ones where everyone is being goofy when they know they are being photographed. So lets see some "faking-it" craziness. I will buy a Gelato Fiasco for whoever can get the goofiest picture posted.

Great job getting across the line today! One guy blogged that he has done 8 of these races and this was the worst day of running he has ever experienced. If you can do that first day, the rest will be a piece of cake! We are excited and happy for you that you are finally do what you trained so hard for. We are all at home chatting about you and the race. You are always on the minds of those of us at Chop Point. Love to you both!

Good luck Leah and john! I have actually been to the area you are starting in- my dad's company works with a mine in western china in the Gobi dessert south (I believe) of Urumqui. A six hour car ride from town of Korla. Fascinating landscape and history. Enjoy the run! :) thanks for doing this for a wonderful cause.

I can't wait to hear all about it. I just looked through over 1,000 photos from previous years. Looks amazing. Are you guys racing to win, or to finish? Looks like everyone encourages each other. I'm imaging doing this thru the White Mountains, but way more extreme. Hope to see video updates and all when you get back.

26 May 2015 08:24 am (GMT-05:00) Eastern Time(US & Canada)

We are finally here in Hami China! It's 4 AM because I could not make myself stay awake any longer and went to bed early. It was a long trip! Portland to jfk to Detroit to Beijing to Urumqui. That night we stayed in a hotel and then a private car we hired drove the 6 hour ride to Hami. All of our luggage and gear made it!!!! That was a huge concern. There have been lots of lost luggage and since there are mandatory items you might not be able to start the race of you don't have them. Friday is when everyone shriek be here and Saturday they go over our gear. Then we leave for the first campsite after that. Can't wait to get started!! Thanks for all the encouragement!
