Gobi March (2013) blog posts from Charles Oakes

Dudes,

Stage 4 got its face bashed in today. The landscape was probably the most spectacular so far with some amazing panoramic views of the 'desert' (its rained every night so far). Annoyingly, my sleeping mat sustained a puncture along the way so I'm on the deck 'proper' from here on in.

Tomorrow morning we will be setting off on the biggie with a final 14kms on the final day. I am especially looking forward to the 20km climb in the afternoon that will get us up to 2800 metres above sea level for the remainder of the 'Long March'. Unfortunately, after yesterday's heroics, Vonchy's picked up a few scrapes. Most notably, not one to be outdone, he has gone and gotten himself some kidney-sized blisters on the souls of his feet as well. Don't be alarmed- we'll be prominent members of the chill-squadron tomorrow and will get each other over the line.

The other lads went well today, all posting great times (especially Elbutt who was right up with the real lunatics).

Looking forward to tomorrow for a number of reasons:

- I finished my last sachet of Oatmeal this morning so won't EVER have to eat that crap again;
- I've got 1 x pepparami, 1 x packet of Haribo (bears) to munch on which I have been saving all week;
- The back of this thing is broken once we get back to camp tomorrow;
- It brings us one day closer to ONIBJ* which has dominated our tent's conversation of late. Toni has taken charge of the logistics (who'd a'thunk it) and his cheeky biltong face tells me that we should all be trembling with fear.

Right I'm off to have some Chicken Tikka and drain my feet.

Fond regards,
Charles

p.s. Henrietta- would you mind paying the parking ticket I picked up before I flew out here? Think the 14 day '50% discount' might be running out soon. Babe you know I'll hit you back.

Thank you so much for keeping Tony 's tail wagging as he totters along... What makes me think that same from Beijing would be the best yet???... B est of luck for the last-of-the -last, as they say in Africa... Big hug, Marina. xxx

I met a traveller from an antique land Who said: `Two vast and trunkless legs of stone Stand in the desert. Near them, on the sand, Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown, And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command, Tell that its sculptor well those passions read Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things, The hand that mocked them and the heart that fed. And on the pedestal these words appear -- "My name is Ozymandias, king of kings: Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!" Nothing beside remains. Round the decay Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare The lone and level sands stretch far away.'

Charlie, thank you so much for helping Anty along yesterday. It is this sort of comradeship that captures the spirit of the massive challenge you guys have taken on in the name of a wonderful cause. Hang in there and think about the opportunity your team is giving to so many to take in views of our planet for the first time. Looking forward to the homecoming!! Best wishes, Chrizzy.

Little bro! I am unbelievably impressed with you guys, you really are (wet ) desert superstars. I am in horror at the thought of your feet, but also keen to have a peek. Henry is amazing at foot massages and I am sure will be willing to help the healing process. I am not sure cap will willingly share his footwear again. Little ossy bear sends a coo and can't wait to chill with his amazing ultra marathon gobi desert conqueror uncle. A huge hug to all the boys and extra one for vc. When you read this you will be done! Love ya Claire and Oscar x

Yes I will pay your parking ticket you swine...and *FTR I'm really not looking forward to you airing your naked disgusting feet walking around the carpets of 7 Quain next week...the bathroom has been so hair-free these last few days i'm nervous about the post-gobi shedding process. ONIBJ sounds frickin' awesome - no BJ's in though Tony. Keep going boys you are all so so close to your whiskeys and gaffs in BJ! xxx *For the record

Day 3 complete and all good. We’re currently at the foothills of some mountains that I can only assume we’ll be taking on a some stage…

Instead of a diary-style update, I’m going for the bullet approach:

-          I’m holding up reasonably well but was substantially limited in how hard we could go at it today on account of the treats that the course has served up on my feet so far (there are some pretty tasty snaps for you all to savor on our return);

-          Tom and I ran the day together; his company was both intellectually and sexually stimulating;

-          Biggest surprise of the day was Toni, who has all of a sudden discovered that he is an extraordinary trail-runner. He came in 14th place today which was unbelievably impressive for a host of reasons, not least the toughness of today’s course (1300m elevation today leaving us at 2000m above sea level)- those that know the dude clearly understand that he has a screw loose but his performance over the last two days has been simply amazing;

-          Still struggling with getting much sleep;

-          The novelty of eating food of a sachet has most definitely worn off (in particularly the Oatmeal). I’ve decided to throw away some of my food to lighten my bag (appetite also pretty much gone)

-          I haven’t returned to the bog pit since my last visit. Tim and Jack have really gotten into it, I don’t share their enthusiasm;

-          I shaved my legs in Bortala before we started the race. This has been met with mixed reviews in the camp.

The Gobi Boys march on, 42kms tomorrow before the infamous ‘long march’ which will be a 78km slog at altitude.

Ciao

Hi sunny boy! Following the news on the website daily at work and searching for your name in the top three or top bottom - almost as much kudos to come at the end just complete the course in your own time blisters and all. You are my hero and everyone at work who Passes my door gets a look at my son in the Gobi! Bets are on! Do not forget why you are running - not for you but those who need sight and you boys have raised an incredible amount to help many who will never know you - actually maybe they will as I am sure there is a run in India?! London marathon was a dream in comparison - I can only imagine the scenery and sheep, gullies , hills, steep climbs, rocks, any any snakes or doodles? Hope someone is recording ? We need a presentation to all interested and loving parents! Briar is hot sunny and gabby lying down as it is too warm,! You are so far away from civilisation you have probably forgotten what deodorant is and the flushing loo! Also there have been no world wars and uk is still in the red but enjoying the beginning of summer. The birds are certainly flirting now and our chimneys are full of families of youngsters - crows ugh!!! Claire's birthday tomorrow but the main focus on your final stages - remember the hare and the tortoise just make it and you will be proud and so will I. Remember this lovely lady to your pals and wish them well - so proud of you all - did you ever know what you were letting yourselves in for - the next desert..? Mummyjune xxxxxx

I have just had lunch with your sister and very cute nephew and she has just informed me of the amazing thing you are doing. GOOD LUCK with your last and double hard day. The Elizabeth St Party is happening next Wednesday 12th so if you are back and able to walk you should come along and we can celebrate your achievement in style. I hope your feet are ok. Keep drinking lots of water. A couple of jokes to amuse you: I just got sacked from my job with the Samaritans. A guy called Abdul phoned and said, "I'm lying on the railway track waiting for the train to come". All I said was, "Remain calm and stay on the line" .. A man in a London Tesco tries to buy half a cauliflower. The very young produce assistant tells him that they sell only whole cauliflowers. The man persists and asks to see the manager. The boy says he'll ask his manager about it. Walking into the back room, the boy said to his manager 'Some prat out there wants to buy half a cauliflower.' As he finished his sentence, he turned to find the man standing right behind him, so he added, 'And this gentleman has kindly offered to buy the other half.' The manager approved the deal, and the man went on his way. Later the manager said to the boy, 'I was impressed with the way you got yourself out of that situation earlier. We like people who think on their feet here. Where are you from, son?' ' Liverpool , sir,' the boy replied. 'Well, why did you leave Liverpool ?' the manager asked. The boy said, 'Sir, there's nothing but whores and footballers up there.' 'Really?' said the manager. 'My wife is from Liverpool .' GOOD LUCK!!!!! x

03 June 2013 09:21 am (GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi

Today, day two, is the day that my feet caved in. We took off this morning in the customary fashion at 0800 having shovelled down some 400 calories of repugnant boil in a bag oatmeal which is beginning to be tough to stomach as we get more fatigued. Stage 1 was civlised enough as the group cantered through the vast expanse of the Gobi grasslands as the sun was rising but Stage 2, a ’moonscape’, was too much for my feeble hooves to bear- disintegrating shortly thereafter. Several hours later i triumphantly flopped over the finish line and headed straight for the medi-tent to get myself patched up.

Morale in the tent is high with the remainder of the Gobi lads all in reasonable shape. In particular Tom Muir is looking the best i have ever seen him! And i was with him at The Feathers in 2001!

Peace.

Charles

Hi Charlie, Keep going buddy despite the feet. Lots of tape and perseverance. Your mind will keep you going no matter what. Good effort by Ant to do 6 hours with a gammy knee. You will all be suffering from some form of pain but your collective will power will see you through. Some good pics of you and Tim on the Gobi site. Great effort. Dad.x

Dudes and chicks,

Before anyone begins to read this, if you would like a more detailed account of our trip to date, I suggest you take a peek at VC’s blog which is a far more comprehensive account of our journey thus far…

My update begins with stage one complete: legs are dreamy, I smell like a Liberian slum and my feet have already started to succumb to leprosy that I’ve always feared was inside me. Admittedly we took it pretty easy today, but it’s nice to arrive back at camp feeling in reasonable shape ahead of what promises to be a ball-busting few days. Unfortunately, General Von Christierson’s knee fell apart today which was a bit of a bore for him, so Mr Muir and myself spent the last two stages of the race with the draatrek learning about the birds and the bees while JTD and Elbutt charged ahead. He’ll be trying to march through the remaining days and with a steady supply of industrial strength painkillers from Muir’s medi-bag he should be fine.

The living conditions are pretty basic but ok (save for the latrines, where you gain a pretty deep insight into the digestive workings of your fellow campers).

Right- being lobbed off the terminal now- longer update tomorrow I promise

Charles

Charles, glad stage 1 is done and you are probably finishing up with stage 2 now hopefully! Rain usually sounds like a blessing in the desert and hopefully it wasn't too much of a hinderance. Forget about the cheesy smell eminating from your feet and try to enjoy the scenery:)

Hi Charlie, Rumour has it that the Gobi March people provide good-looking nurses who will jump to Ant's every command as he navigates his way across the desert. Levity aside, he should consult a doctor to discuss any long-term damage which may ensue. The cause is noble but his ability to retain agility and movement throughout what promises to be a long and exciting life is worthy of consideration. Hopefully you will be able to stretch your legs today. There must be some interesting people running with you who have good stories to tell. There are a couple of English gals who seem to be tearing up the desert in short order. Nothing much to report here other than my mate Shalk Brits got a 3 match ban for clocking Farrell in the Lions v Barbarians game in Hong Kong. Most unlike Brits who was probably severely provoked. Have a good session today. The terrain sounds fascinating if it is possible to focus on it when your lungs are burning. All you Gobi Boys have completed stage 1 with honours. Dad.x
