Gobi March (2013) blog posts from Joanna Eades

08 June 2013 08:25 am (GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi

I'm not sure my last blog was posted (I can't see it) but synopsis is that I was gutted to have missed out on the long day when I was feeling fantastic. That said, who knows what I could have done in another 20km and even if I could have made up the 14 minute deficit, today would have been tough to win on a sprint finish. Yesterday we were blanketed in thick fog, today we woke to frost, a clear blue sky and snow-capped mountains. I'd a terrible night's sleep due to someone snoring in our yurt (jane, Sharon - no one from out tent and David has been surpridingly quiet!!). After the usual porridge, faffing, packing we walked to the start line for. 14.5km "sprint" to home. I knew that 14 minutes over 14km was an impossible goal, so Shiri and I agreed to run in together. We enjoyed the run, along the base of the mountains and down to the lake - taking photos and chatting. Shiri's boyfriend (somewhere in the bottom half of the pack) was obviously fed up with being "chicked" by his girlfriend, passed us, as did many others. I was in a bit of pain from my hip flexors, so we kept up a steady trot and came in somewhere under 90 mins, with a few tears, beers and cheers and a fabulous lakeside finish. I leapt a star jump for the Seagods - which has now completely destroyed my hip flexors - hopefully just a blip! We cheered the rest in and shared beers and some sort of uigher cornish pasty before the push ride to civilisation - well the Boertala Hotel in Bole - which isn't yet civilisation but judging by the number of cranes it soon will be!!! So final word - an awesome week, a shock to be back in the real world but I'm happy with 12th place and a bit of healthy competition from Shiri - a worthy winner. Lastly, I can't thank tent 14 enough - I really couldn't have asked for a more supportive tent, especially as everyone coped with their own injuries and challenges. Thanks again for following and don't forget to let me know about sponsorship! Jo x PS. Nothing can describe the joy of a hot shower after a week....

Well done Jo. I have no doubt you are very disappointed to get pulled on the long day when you were doing so well but I hope when you reflect you will realise what a really great run you had. As ever a fantastic effort and apart from your hip sounds as though you are pretty much in one piece which is good. Hope the end of race party is a lot of fun with some great people. Take care and hope you have a smooth and safe trip home. Gx

Such great work, congrats. Know how disappointed you will be not to have picked off a few more during stage 5 and made up those extra minutes but that part you can't control and what you could do has been AMAZING!! Hope you are feeling proud, you should be. Glad everyone is safe too. See you in a couple of days for the BFC.. X

You are a champion Jo. I know you would have pulled that deficit in a longer race. Sadly no one can control the weather and safety has to be paramount for RTP. Well done.

For someone who decided not to train for this epic until the very last moment, you have done magnificently and achieved some outstanding times. What a pity about the aborted Stage 5, that must have been a very low point particularly when you were doing so well. Sadly no point in speculating, we are absolutely thrilled that you got 12th place, full marks for dogged determination and drive. Yes, of course we will sponsor; will talk later. Enjoy the party.... Much love. M&D. Xxx

So we are all safe and sound in a yurt village and although that sounds like a good place to be, I’m disappointed not to have had my long day, especially as I felt I was coming into my own and that this was my chance….

It is hard to imagine that we spent the night before last swimming in a lake by camp, but then the heavens opened in the night – one tent was flooded and we started the race damp and under an overcast sky.  Stage 1 was along a flat road and I followed the MDS guys and their pert bottoms as they trotted off into the distance!  Through stage 1 and it was cool but surprisingly humid so I was getting wet.  My stress fracture in my toe was giving my grief and I was enjoying some melodramatic “ohs” to no-one in particular. Lovely Dr Jack gave me some painkillers at CP 1 and I jogged on through to stage 2 where I put on my jacket, just as it started to rain – it added some respite from the wind.  I had probably started about 20th off the start line but now I was catching up and slowing overtaking people.

Our tent manager/house husband Paul had luckily made us take black waterproof bags and cut holes for head and arms – so I added this over the top and I started to feel much warmer, if not very glamorous, as the rain really came down (along with some hail!)  Up through CP3 and then up the final steep climb (approx. 2,800 m) to CP4.  I was feeling great.  Shiri was just ahead and I felt strong.  A quick fill up at CP4 and I ran down the other side – the weather was bleak – I felt like I was in the Brecon Beacons in March, but with more yurts and hairier sheep!!!  I felt fantastic and was singing “The Hills are alive with the sound of music” followed by a bit of Bohemain Rhapsody.  As I got lower the weather picked up and the sun was coming out.  I ran down to CP5 and met Shiri who seemed to be struggling.   I checked she was Ok and then jogged on – I was eating up the kms and feeling great.  Down the gravel path and up the road.  I could see the next 3 competitors (in 10-12th place) just 200m ahead of me and I had then in my sights.  I marched up the road and was running down from the peak into CP6 when the news was broken that the race was being pulled.

I know safety is the priority, but I was gutted as I was having such a great day, I felt I could make up a large part of the Deficit with Shiri (she came in 7mins later to CP6 so I had made 7mins on an 8km section) and maybe pick off some of the guys.  The other 3 guys were there and we lay in the sunshine – disbelieving that they had pulled us.  The rest was a lot of waiting around and logistics of getting us back to a base where we could get warm and dry.  Not really sure what to do about food, what to eat, what to save, what we might be asked to do tomorrow….  I know it was very weather dependent and the organisers didn’t know but it was hard to plan or know what was happening.

So we have had a dry overnight and still no news on how they are going to work out times for yesterday or what they are going to make us to tomorrow.  Some are relieved but most people are disappointed not to have had their long day or the full race.  C’est La Vie!!

Apparently they are going to give us some noodles to keep us happy.  Oh well, the easiest way to my heart is through my stomach.

Time in cyber yurt is limited due to queue – so that’s all for now.

Thanks for messages – I will have to read later.

Jo  xxxxx

PS  Sharon – David said he’d blog later he’s under 2 duvets in the yurt!!

05 June 2013 02:42 am (GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi

Thanks for all the wonderful mesages - am feeling quite emotional as I sit and type this - I think it's the lack of food!!!  Thanks for everyone for following me.

Today was full of ups and downs quite literally!  We started in the rain, which made for a fresh start for a change.  I felt full of beans off the start and had the leaders in my sights for first few km.  I led Shiri, but she wasn't far behind...  She pipped me into Checkpoint 1 but we both got in in just over an hour which I was pleased with for 10km bearing in mind everything!!!!  She was messing with her bag so I told her to catch me on the next section - I thought we would probably spend the day running together again.  I was off in a small pack with a Korean, Kiwi, Swiss and was enjoying the trotting over grasslands, up and down gullies, trying to dodge steams and keep feet dry.  The scenery was lovely - amazing grasslands with sheep or yurts in the forgeround and massive mountains behind.  I snapped a few piccies - but quickly as Shiri hadn't caught me up yet and I couldn't see her when I took a sneaky look back.  I was feeling like I was running on empty, I really seem to be feeling the lack of food, I've been tucking into the food for the long day - let's hope that is not a mistake!!!   CP 2 was on top of a wonderful plain and then we had more undulating grasslands interspersed with bogs and gullies - but I was quite enjoying it.  We passed more of the local farmers who shook our hands and cheered us on.  Then we hit a gravelly road downhill for a few km, into CP3 where it was lovely to see Paul (one of my tentmates who has dropped out) cheering us on!  He cheerfully told me that the worst was over (that's what he thought!) I had a different perspective as we had the last 10km on road into the finish.   I hate the flat running, it is mentally so tough to keep motivated.  I figured 7 minute km - 70 mins and just clocked off those minutes one at a time.  I was still ahead of Shiri but no idea how far, so I tried to keep up the running which by now was not much more than a slow trot.  We turned off onto a sandy track lined by trees giving some lovely shade and then another turning and I thought I saw some tents, but nothing seemed to come into view and I couldn't hear the finishing drum.  A few guys were still ahead in sight - where was the finish? Then I heard the drum and saw the marshall directing us into the trees and to the finish.  4.35 today - 1st woman and 12th overall -- pretty happy.  I just plopped down at the finish with my feet up and waited for Shiri to come in - only about 5 minutes behind me....  So now we have an interesting race tomorrow.  She has a 30 minute lead on me.  Not sure where we sit in the total field - but maybe it is best not to know?!

The rest of my tent have all finished today  - I can't believe how some of them are battling injuries and still going strong.  Everyone is so supportive of each other.  Looking forward to sharing a beer with everyone on Saturday night!!  Or chmpagne - but I'm not sure the Botala Hotel in Bole will stretch to that!!  Anyway, that seems to  be a way away and we still have the Long Day - 75km tomorrow.  Normally I'd be feeling confident about the long day, but I've not done anything more than 47km in last 3 years and don't think I've been doing enough hills in training (partly because I signed up so late and hadn't actually read the race briefing - school girl error!!) so I think it is anyone's race.  I think there could be an interesting competition with the men too - yes Lawrence the Italian stallion is strutting around camp in the smallest shorts possble - whatever the weather!!!

Not much more to add - going to head back to the tent and see if anyone is throwing out any food!!!  Sean is offering me a gel if I stretch his hamstrings!!!
Love to all
Jo xxx

Congratulations, Jo, on your completion of The Gobi March!! You are truly an inspiration. Your strength and determination made it look so easy, but I know it was anything but easy. The extreme temps, the varied terrain, the lack of food and abundance of only warm water... make for a very difficult run. I hope you enjoyed every minute of it. Way to go!!! U r amazing!!!

Wow. Terrific news about Stage 5, you must have had as incredibly good day, despite the weather and terrain, although the posted photos show that it was far from easy! Hope that you are in good shape and enjoying a day off. It goes without saying what you will be hoping for tomorrow and you have all the determination to do just that. Go for it, we will be shouting from Havant! With our fondest love M & D

Just seen the stage 5 results and you came in first female and 2 hours ahead of the Italian stallion race leader - wow!. Looks as though there was a gang of you running together which must have been comforting given the probably horrendous conditions. You are now 15 mins behind Shiri which means you are going to have to run like the wind in the 10km!! By the time you read this, it will all be over and wherever you have finished you have run a truly amazing race. Can't wait for the next update. Enjoy the cold beer and celebrations and the big chow down. x

Dying to hear how the long day went.....you say you haven't trained but the long ones are your best ( no pun intended). They say the long day was cut short because of rain, cold and wet so heaven knows how bad it must have been for the bonkers organizers to have called it off. Anyway I'm completely rambling and sozzled blogging so just wanted to say hi and to wish you a great last day. I'm sure you did great today and I'll be up at the crack of dawn to hear how you got on. Can't believe it's almost over. You are brilliant and amazing and I hope you can tell from the comments how many peeps think the same. Us and the doggy woof woofs xxxxx

04 June 2013 02:08 am (GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi

I'm sitting in the cyber tent, U2 playing in the background and the finish drum celebrating another competitor arriving...

Note that there was no sattelite last night, I am blogging, but I don't think there was connection so there might be 2 messages at once today.....

We are in a stunning spot on a grass plain in the shadow of the Atlai Mountains.  Today was tough, I didn't feel like my legs wanted to work at all!!!

Last night wasn't ideal, with massive rain and alot of kit/things in the tent getting wet.  It felt cold starting off, but didn't take long for the sun to come out.  We climbed out of the small valley we had camped in up a muddy incline, with thick red mud that stuck to our feet and made my shoes feel much heavier.  Then we had a long undulating road.  At the brow of each hill, there was a policeman/Chinese military on one side (just to make sure we didn't stray too far) and on the other a few of the local people, generally accompanied by a horse or two and maybe a dog.  The locals cheer and give huge grins with their weather beaten faces.  I'm sure this is the event of the year in the Atlai Mountains!!

I thought stage 2 would never end and I kept seeing things in the distance, thinking it was the checkpoint, and then realised it was a yurt or army vehicle.  It was a relief to see CP2 in the shadow of a stupa.  After a brief stop and some painkillers - much needed for a stress fracture in one of my toes - we started the climb into stage 3.  We went up a valley by the side of a river - the air felt cooler in the shadow of the pine trees with the cld mountain stream - it was a lovely change.  We crossed some swing bridges - which left me swaying as I made the climb up a very steep hill.  It was tough, but I did find the time for a look back with stunning views down the valley.  Then there was a few km run down a gravelly road - I overtook the smiley Japanese and the not so smiley Canadian guy, who had both overtaken me on the way up!  I enjoyed a good run down and a brief stop at CP3 where I was told it was 6.2km run downhill to camp.

After about a km, I could see camp and  I can say it was not downhill from where I was looking!!!  Up and down some undulating terrain and finally I could hear the beating drum of home.  There was a guy within my sights (and I don't think he knew I was there) so I picked it up and sprinted to home.  I was 14th overall today and 2nd female - Shiri had a great day and will take the leaders bib with a 30 minute lead on me - she is looking super strong and it has been good to have someone to run with - but there is still time.....

Lots of laughs in our tent.  Sean and Andy are perservering with pretty bad injuries, Alison to with achilles pain, sadly Paul had to drop out today - he's had stomach problems since day 1 - and this is tough to be doing on no fuel.  Everyone else is doing well.

Imi, thanks for taking girls out and sending their messages!!!  Janine, Alison and I are all in hysterics about your Borat comment - not sure if you have seen photos of the Italian stallion in camp strutting his stuff???

Josie we must talk about Madagascar!!

Seagods, glad to hear training and partying on track.  I've still to do a star jump!!! Let me know what the pool party theme is going to be...

OK, queue in the cyber tent so I'd best wrap up.
 Jo x

Jo - Sorry not to have posted sooner - am in Pompeii with iffy hotel internet that now seems to be sorted. It all seems a very long way from where you must be! SOOOO glad to hear that you are doing so fantastically well - though like Josie both amused and slightly concerned at the 'oh, got a stress fracture' throwaway line! Keep it up, am rooting for you from Italy - the Romans would think you were absolutely bonkers but you are a star. Maybe you could think about keeping on running all the way back to England? ;-) xxx

Reckon Nails/Shazza were a bit sozzled don't you?! By the time you read this, you will be hitting the Parmesan big time after the long march. Great pic of you during stage 3 looking happy and fresh (hate the socks though! Don't try those in LKF). Seeing the photos makes me think about how lonely it must be but you seem to thrive on it all...it really is incredible what mental strength you have. Looking forward to seeing the results and just hope that you had another great day and even managed to climb up the leader board as you are so great at the longer distances. What's a 100km to our Jo Jo? Will check in first thing and hope for an update during the night. All love xx

Sounds like you are having a blast. :) (jokingly) I am glad to see the Italian stallion is there. I was just mentioning him on facebook with Derek. I was mentioning that he brings little clothes, etc even when it is super cold. I am sure things haven't changed. You mentioned there is still a lot of time. You are correct and I am sure you will put your best effort to catch her. I'm sitting here reflecting on how much fun you are having while I am have a cold drink. :) You are doing great as usual. Keep up the good work...

03 June 2013 08:42 am (GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi

So now at camp 2, after another tough day.

Had a better night's sleep and woke to a smattering of a rain and a pleasant breeze.  We hoped it held as we were off at 8am.  Today was supposed to be moderate, easy, easy, easy - in terms of difficulty for each section, but it was undulating, rocky and all potentially runable so it felt a tough 42km - basically a marathon over rocks, shrubs and water courses about a 1m or so deep that we had to jump down and up the other side.

Shiri and I started off together but she picked up pace and I was sluggish to get started so I let her go off.  We ran towards Kazakhstan and then turned left and ran with the mountain marking the border on our right under the watchful eyes of hairy sheep and the Chinese army to make sure we didn't suddenly make a break over the hills!!!  The scenery was stunning with grass rolling hills in the foreground and big peaks in the background.   We ran over some sort of wild herb, that send up a lovely fragrance as you run along....  all lovely if we didn't have to carry a week's belongings on our back!

Shiri was in view and I figured about 2 mins ahead of me (bearing in mind I had a 3 minute lead on day 1), I just hung in and kept her in view.  Then at CP 3 she waited and said she was fed up of looking over her shoulder at me and could we run in together!.  So we had a more relaxed last 10km and managed to keep quite a steady pace, picking off a few of the guys on our way.   It was great to have the company.  We came in joint 11th, which we were pretty chuffed with and I don't think I could have done it without her.  I know it was supposed to be "easy" but the rocky undulating terrain  made for tough running!!

The finish point is a lovely grassy camp next to an ice cold stream.  So I've managed to have a swim (ice bath!) and rinse my clothes, which was a good plan until it started to rain - so now I'm not sure how I will get everything dry.   It's cooler which is a nice relief and as I'm first home in our tent, I've bagsied a good spot in the middle to try and stay warm and dry!!

I think tomorrow is due to be hillier and tougher - but I'm looking forward to a change from all this flat running....

Feet OK - one blood blister and a couple of sore toe nails, back is chaffed and hamstring seems to be holding up.  Everyone in the tent doing OK, but 2 guys injured and sadly I think one might have to drop out.   One also struggled with his stomach, but hopefully today was better.

OK, time for more food and stretching.
Thanks for all the messages.
Jo x

PS  Josie - will you do Madagascar with me????!!!!

So relieved to get your 2 updates as it's been a day or so without comms (apparently the clouds prevented the satellite from working). We knew you were doing fine as the breaking news emails said you came in together with Sheri on day 2. I am sure the company is nice but hope you have held on to the yellow bib! You bring it all alive with your blogs and while I don't want to take anything away from how tough it is, it does sound a whole lot better than Namibia and Kimberley. They really were bonkers of the highest order. Hoping you got through the mountain stage ok today and waiting with bated breath for results to come through. I find it funny that you say you haven't done enough hill training when you are running over the twins / Violet Hill before work most days...if that's not hill training,I don't know what is! In awe, me xx PS. not sure if you got my recent comments but yes I want to do Madagascar...but only walking-la!! i think ricky might be persuaded too (or he might do a covert operation to sneak in extra parmesan at night).

02 June 2013 08:48 am (GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi

We are at Camp 2 - Shepherd's Heaven.  A lovely spot with rolling grasslands and sheep!!  AND there is a foot spa (well buckets of cold water - but it feels like heaven!!)

A good but tough first day.  Last night wasn't the best sleep - it was light until gone 11pm and then people were up again at 4.30am - between those I slept fitfully.  Anyway, I was keen to get started....   Everyone charged off the start line - me too!  There was another lady and we had a little overtaking shuffle going on for the first few km and then I got into my stride and she seemed to drop behind.  I tried to resist the temptation to look back - although I did on one uphill and she was't far behind.  But I focused - "eyes in this boat"  rang through my head - thanks Seagods - as I tried to focus on running my race.  I took a while to get going but after about 35 mins I started to get into my stride.  I suddenly heard Al's voice telling me to eat every 30 mins and popped some macadamia nuts - thanks Al!!  The first checkpoint was here in no time - I'd planned on 90 mins but was in in under 80 mins which was good, but then I struggled to get into my stride as I went onto stage 2.    I thought about all the HK folks who would be nursing hangovers after the rugby yesterday and it cheered me to be running through the most beautiful scenery of rocks and grass lands...  Luckily there was cloud cover for much of the day - such a relief after yesterday - as I was frying anyway.....

Checkpoint 2 appeared before I knew it and I was told the next stage was 12 km.   We passed through little villages - dogs barked (luckily tied up) and children waved and everyone shouted "gau yau" - or the mandarin equivalent "add oil" - "keep going"!!!  The next stage felt endless and I was struggling to keep the shuffle going - the route was gently moving uphill - just too steep to run (with the pack) but I felt I had enough of a lead.  I passed some fiesty camels who gave me the evil eye - so I kept out of their way!!!  I ran out of water with 20-30 mins to the checkpoint and everyone I passed also seemed to be suffering.  I was starting to agree with Tyler - that this was bonkers!!

Finally got to checkpoint 3 and only 10km to the finish.  I started to enjoy myself - there was a mix of road, steps and off trail - good HK terrain.  I was getting into my stride and congratulating myself on running my own race when I suddenly saw a lady out of the corner of my eye - no way!!!!  I figured we had about 2 km to the finish and I was not going to give up my pole position!!  The path was rocky and over small up and down hills.  I put my best KOTH training into effect and threw myself down the downhills, barely in control and trying to avoid the rocks!!  Then tried to throw myself up the uphills....  I didn't dare look back but was determined to keep going.  i even caught up the guy in front, but still I didn't look back and finally the finish came into view.  I didn't know I had a sprint finish in me, but finally crossed the finish line with a couple of mins to spare before Sherree followed....  So I'm pretty chuffed to have won the yellow bib for stage 1 but I think we could have a bit of a fun battle over next few days.

So now I've eaten, washed my feet, tapped my first blister and sitting here chilling with some tunes playing in the background.
I've not seen any of my tent in yet, but I'd best go and see if anyone is here.  Hope they are all enjoying it.....

Thanks for all the messages.
More tomorrow when we really start to see what we are made of!
Jo xx

Greetings from Camp 1.  Thanks to everyone for all the lovely messages.
Sun is shining!  Phew wasn"t expecting this - 8pm at night, sun is still high in the sky and nowhere to hide.  So I am trying to grab some shade in the cyber tent.  I've had a yummy meal of freeze dried Chicken Korma and I've got a hot chocolate for dessert - not that I need anything else hot.  An ice cold beer wouldn't go amiss.

I'm feeling a bit apprehensive about tomorrow, it is looking hotter than I thought and the course is looking hillier - think I should have done a few more hills in training, but I'm glad I brought my poles - hopefully they will take a bit of weight off my legs.

I've got a fabulous tent with everyone I know.  Sharon, in case you are reading - David says hi and he's fine and he's too busy taping his feet.  In fact my whole tent seems to be taping their feet - so I'm feeling a bit left out.  Ah David, has just appeared - I think he felt guilty!!

Apparently we are only 7km from Kazakhstan and there appear to be a tent of Chinese folks keeping an eye on us.
OK - 42 km tmorrow and a few hills.  Start at 8am, hope to be in in time for a late lunch.

Next update then.
Love to all.  Imi, give the dogs a hug if you see them!!!

Bit of a shock to see my name on your blog, no doubt - but I gave up work last week so have more time to follow things like this - and maybe one day to actually join you (ha ha). But it looks terribly exciting - and well done for getting out there again. You sound disappointed that the course is so hot. Isn't that is your competitive advantage? Proof that it's easy to say you want a hot race - and rather less attractive when you've got one!! Best of luck with it anyway. love Catherine

So I learnt today from a local Urumqi lady that Gobi means "place of no trees and all stones" - so that sounds like a perfect place for a week's holiday?!! But luckily I don't think we are technically in the Gobi and everyone at RTP is saying how stunning the course is and in an area where tourists aren't usually allowed to go..... so don't take photos of people in uniform or buildings with aeriels on - or something like that... We are all now at Bole (pronounced "Bowl-a") where we had the usual Chinese 3 star restaurant breakfast (!!) Have had the race briefing and now doing the mandatory checking of kit. I'm still sewing on 4 Deserts patches to clothing whilst in the background I can hear the sounds of locak Kazah people singing and dancing (that's not a joke)! One last thing, so many people have asked me if I'm raising money for charity. I've been a bit disorganised (about the whole race!) But if anyone would like to contribute, I'd like to support a small Beijing charity that Penny Minges introduced me to that raises money for heart surgery for needy Chinese children.

29 May 2013 08:27 am (GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi

As a famous running coach once said “hard things take time to do. Impossible things take a little longer”.  Well, it has been a long journey to get to the start line of this race….

In July 2010, I tore my hamstring tendon (yes, during some ridiculous long race!).  After a few months of denial and many more months of treatment (with no running and at one stage not much walking either), in January 2012, my physio told me I could run for 2 minutes on a treadmill…  and so the long road to recovery began.  Slow steps forwards and a large number of steps backwards (including many panicky texts, emails and visits to my ever patient physio!) and I’m finally back and heading to the start line of the Gobi March tomorrow morning!

I have a huge number of people to thank for helping put me back together again and I probably will forget to name them all – but first of all my long suffering physio – Justin and the rest of the team at Physiocentral - Michael, Heidi, Daniel and Stella, also Ines, Ross, Peter, Kari.  Also to my family and friends who have helped support me through all my running adventures, but more importantly put up with me being grumpy girl for the many months when I couldn’t run!  Finally, to all my running friends, especially Al who gave me a target and a comeback race to aim for last October (plus trying to stop me over racing!) and Imi who has clocked up almost as many miles as me and helped me stay motivated through the longer training runs.  Finally, Ruby and Amelia - my 4 legged running partners – who are fit and ready to run the Gobi – if only they could get their pet passports in time!!

Having only officially signed up, paid and received all the details just over a week ago, the last few days have been a little bit of a frenzy of shopping and weighing things.  CWR (calorie to weight ratio) becomes the all-important criteria for food and I’m weighing everything from toothbrushes to flip flops to decide what comes with me, what has superfluous bits cut off it (yes I’ve trimmed my flip flops!) and what stays behind.   According to my spreadsheet, my pack currently weighs in at 7.6kg and I have 15,864 calories.  I’ve just sacrificed 2 pairs of clean socks for a nice big lump of parmesan cheese – a treat for the Long March!!

I’m trying not to get flustered by the latest email (this morning) telling us to bring extra warm and windproof clothes – I’ve managed to resist the temptation to buy more gear!  So I just need to buy a spare torch, tell everyone at work that I really am non-contactable for a week and Bole here I come….

If you are reading this, please send me lots of encouraging messages, gossip, anything to keep my mind off the pain!

Next instalment from somewhere in Western china….

Jo

OMG Jo! What next ..?! You are amazing. There's me checking out Facebook after a week off in Cyprus and I see you are doing this awesome run - I would say that it's unexpected - but then again maybe not! Hope all going well. And thank you for my birthday card, here ready for me for Sunday. Take care and I look forward to hearing more news. Clauds xx

Keep on truckin' Jo but as quick as possible please. The boat felt heavy as hell on Saturday and the warm-up led by Michael was downright awful. The Seagods even ended up in Escape after the Lions match. Things just ain't right! Keep up the great work. 3-2-1 Seagods!

Awww I have loved my runs with you Jo, it's been a fabulous way of getting to know my neighbour! You have evolved from being 'Simon's girlfriend' to being a great friend to me too. I am looking forward to lots more 'trails' and tribulations-so make sure you stay fit and healthy. You are so strong and determined I know you will do brilliantly but most of all enjoy yourself! I will keep and eye on R&A, it's roasting here today, did 10.5k in 33 degrees earlier, it felt like I had a 10kg back pack on but it was just my slow legs in truth! Loads of love to you and keep running! Sweaty hugs! Ims XXX

I am with Tyler....you are completely bonkers but of all the people I know you are the only one with the guts to take on this mega challenge and actually think you might win....and you just might too! We will be thinking of you and following your progress all along the way. Good luck and lots of love, Ricky xx

Ricky and I are settling in for a week of arm chair ultra-racing. Thankfully, the football season is over so we have no distractions! Always so proud of you Jo and so bloody inspired by all these insane things you put yourself through. Hopefully the organisers have learnt something from the Kimberley RTP and that this will be a challenging but enjoyable event. I'm sure that Amelia and Ruby will be running all the way with you too in their dreams! Looking forward to the next installment. xxxx PS. say hi to David.

Good Luck Josephine!! Hope it goes really well, and the cheesy socks actually help by starting to run on their own accord... If it's cold, just remember that mutual warmth is the best you can get, so find a nice man to share your tent with - just no naughty business as you need all your strength now, and for the BFC! Go Jo!!! You will be fabulous!! Set backs only make us stronger. An olympian runner once told me that 'Stress fractures only happen in the same place once, as when they heal they heal stronger'. I know this is not a problem for you. Your body will be as strong as your spirit, and that is invincible. Sending you lots of strength to the Gobi. thank you for inspiring me to push harder and do things outside my comfort zone, you are an inspiration:) xxx

The force is with you and we've got the faith. Hope it goes better and you enjoy it more than you even dream you can. In those hard times remember how far you've come and those 2 wiggly bottoms at home waiting for you with unquestioning love. Pah, what's 80km in a day with aches and pains anyway. You're a superstar. We'll be watching you. Xx Oh and hurry back for Stanley!!
