No blog yesterday due to a huge shift in the weather. I am getting the impression the chinese word for desert has been lost in translation. As everyone can probably see from the photos this place is pretty lush and having expected some serious sunshine and having experienced 30+ degrees most days a few people almost washed away in the overnight storms. I new this was going to be challenging but i didnt think it would be challenging in this way. Everyone woke up with the mentality of a Cup Final knowing that finishing this meant we were very likely to complete the event, unfortunately the weather had other ideas.
 
The rain did at least stop for the start and with the sun popping out for the start. I experienced the usual frustrating start of all the people able to run, running away from me for the first 10km......... The further i get through this the more i get a niggle in the back of my mind that i want to do something similar but turn up in slightly better physical condition for the start.
 
After the second checkpoint we started the ascent to checkpoints 3 and 4 which was a climb to 2,800m (I'm not sure if people have access to the profile of the course?),  unbelieveably the weather seriously changed and this became as much a mental test as physical, we were literally wearing bin bags , gloves and just focusing on not stopping. These stages were 10km each and people really began to struggle which for the limping cripples was perfect. Despite the weather you could still enjoy how stunning the place was and rather bizarrely we got to the hill in 30th place. There was a bit of confusion at the top about health and safety but we decided the safest thing was to get going. At this point the competitive side started to kick in a little and knowing the next few km's we down hill we startted to try and shuffle/jog to protect of placing a little, i'm not sure how healthy it is but nurofen, paracetamol and anti inflamatories are a magnificent thing, we didn't do anything daft but we didn't lose as many places as usual on the nice downhill bits.
 
Unfortunately that is pretty much where this blogs ends, despite arriving at checkpoint 5 in pretty decent nick and planning on just cracking on we were told that due to the weather the stage was being cancelled. It wasn't safe at the top and we still had one more big climb to go, so i can sympathise. If two lads with serious limps are 30/40th then it must be getting pretty bad further back. We then got told that there was a bus that was going to take us to the lake because the planned camp site was also unsafe. A real shame but you can't do anything about the weather but if they include the dawdle down to checkpoint 6 i'll be very upset.
 
We'v had the rest day today in a yurt village by the lake which is spectacular, hopefully some of the photos do it justice but its nice to rest the knee and ankles a little. Current plan tomorrow is the expected 14km which given enough ibruprofen i may jog but in case mum or dad is reading this i wouldn't be daft enough to try and run after 210km, a twisted ankle and a sore knee (promise?!)
 
Thanks again for all the support, i've met some incredibly interesting people out here and have enough stories to kep my pub chat going for the next year or so.
 
(Alex - Naughty uncle Michael has been particularly well behaved of late. China is a very very long way away, their desert does not look like a desert and sleeping in wet tents is rubbish - You many find all of this usefull :-) )
 
Probably one last update tomorrow after the 14km and there is a chance that i'll have stuffed my face with pizza and had a few beers so i can only apologise for the excessive number of spelling mistakes and outlandish comments in advance.

Bizarrely you get into a routine pretty quickly out here with everyone asleep by 9pm and despite the cold (yes COLD! In the desert) sno one surfaced until 7am. The general idea is to then force down a freeze dried porridge with strawberry’s, strap yourself up and then get to the start line. I’ve found myself another power walker and today finished in just over 7hrs. Not what was intended at the start of this event but without running a step in anger I have been told by veterans than 7hrs is a decent time.

 

Today’s course was the most scenic so far but also the most challenging, We motored through the first 20km in just under 3hrs and whilst the mountains have been to our right for the last day or so they became a brutal reality as we turned into one of the valleys. I guess the faces of the support team at checkpoint 2 were a mixture of a knowing smile and sympathy but you could more than see why. We turned the corner to enter one of the most stunning parks I have ever been to, we walked directly up the river which has all but dried up with harsh mountainside on both sides. We descended further into the valley and came across a couple of rope bridges, which I can imagine would be good fun if you could see the sheer face we had to climb up. Our good progress came to pretty much a standstill moving at 1km/hr at best. I have borrowed a set of poles which made the climb a bit easier but even so it took 45 mins to get to the top, unfortunately my words cannot describe the view at the top and hopefully some of the photos can do this place justice.

 

The next 5km would be a dream if you were able to run but unfortunately due to the knee it was a poor mans version of hopscotch. Me and my partner spent the next 30 minutes or so F’ing and blinding, I’m not sure the parents would be particularly proud but it got us through.

 

Final stage was only 6.5km so we power walked our way to the finish line and a drummer who is still managing to stay enthusiastic. The team out hear never fail to be supportive and in my head we’re over the halfway mark. Another 40km tomorrow, 75km on Friday and the 14km on Saturday doesn’t count, I’ll crawl that bit if I have to.

 

I’m currently a patchwork of various bandages but I came here to finish this so les see how it goes.

not sure if you got my original message so will send you another. cant quite believe you are out there . wish we were with you this time, remember when the going gets tough "ask is this the way to Amarillo' and remember Heather Smalls 'What have you done today to make me feel proud" i would say a heck of a lot, remember life is one long road with many trials and tribulations along the way, but sometimes you have to "stop and smell the roses" as uncle keith would say. in other words appreciate what you have where you are now. You are taking part in an amazing event, enjoy it and come home safely. watch out for a Volvo XC60 we may be behind you!! lots of love the Girvens xxxxx

Aside from having a serious dislike of tents the sleeping really isn’t too bad. There is the obvious moving around you get from 170 people in one camp but apart from the odd person deciding 2am is the time to go to the toilet I woke up feeling okay. Its absolutely amazing the backgrounds of people, there are 40 different nationalities being represented here and ages ranging from 20 to 60-ish?! (maybe older). I continue to be impressed by the stamina of some people running most of the day and then staying up until 12 only to get up again at 4am despite the event not starting until 8am. You just see headlights bobbing around and eventually you just have to get out of bed. (If anyone is ever thinking of doing this do not get freeze dried breakfast, find something light and something you actually like the taste of)

 

So, onto the running/walking, unfortunately after a promising day 1 my race is pretty much run. Turns out I was 22nd day one but unless something miraculous happens that’ll be the highest I’m going to finish. my body has not even begun to recover from Brighton and I’m now carrying a plethora of injuries. The sprained ankle hasn’t recovered, my right knee has now gone due to persistent impact and as a result of changing the way I move my left shin is now aching. I have genuinely tried to run in patches but unfortunately this is not possible. Don’t worry I’m not planning on quitting the event, I will finish this thing but at this stage it appears that is all it will be. The 39km stage was supposed to be one of the easier ones but I came in 71st and in about 7 hrs. gutted doesn’t cover it but once I’d finished moaning to myself and pretty much anyone that would listen I’ve started to lift my head and notice what an amazing place this is. When you look beyond the Chinese authorities that are watching us very closely we are in a stunning part of the world. We spent the bulk of today alongside a mountain range which I can only imagine we will be walking through at some point at the course gets towards 2,800metres.

 

Another 40km tomorrow and who knows maybe the walking will allow a few of the ailments a little bit of time to recover although there are worse ways to spend a week walking through a part of the world very few people have been to.

Wow! What on earth am i doing here? After the flight to Beijing and a connecting flight to Urumqi i started bumping into fellow runners. Rather intimidatingly they were Sahara Run, MDS and Ironman veterans and i was suddenly feeling particularly out of my depth. 1 delayed flight to Bole, the panic about my bag turning up and suddenly this was all very very real. We had been told temperatures ranged between 15 &30 ut it was 34 when we landed. The hotel is okay and i can only apologise when i get back as everyone here talks in grams and calories, post day 1 i can see why. My bag weighs 9kgs (Amateur?!) and i'm pretty sure a camoflage bag and Nike trainers are not the kit of choice but the fact i'm sending this from the end of stage 1 suggests they're fine and not a blister in sight.

Stage 1 was through mysterious stone valley but based on the fact i was staring at my feet for most of the run/walk/shuffle i think i may have missed the mystery. I'm not sure what time i came in but i know it was a good few hours behind our inhouse leonidis impersonator but the tent was empty when i arrived so at least i wasn't last. We have been given permission by Chinese authorities to use this area and you get the feeling locals have genuinely never seen westerners before, absolutely amazing, we had to run up to a mongal monastory that may as well have had 1,000,000 steps but my word it was worth it when i got to the top.

Slight concerns at this stage around my knee as it hadn't recovered from 100km to Brighton and the last 10km was heavy going. An outstanding welsh gentlemen basically dragged me to the finish but we're here, walking is fine so lets see what tomorrow brings.

Right!

Well i can definitely say the fear has well and truely set in. My trainers don't hurt, i've bought most of the equipment, i've trained pretty hard, my visa is done, the flights are booked so what is the problem?! Ah yes................250km across a country i have never been to. 

Due to poor time management and an inability to say no to challenges, particularly after a couple of beers i'm actually running 100km from London to Brighton the weekend before so maybe finishing this in a respectable time will allay some of the fears.

Bizarrely a chap i went to school with completed the Attacama event in March and he's still smiling so it must one hell of an experience. Everyone who has competed in at least one event says the same thing so not matter how hard it is it's not going to be something you forget too quickly.

I'm not overly sure how many people use or read these but if we could start a trail on obvious things not to bother with and what not to forget that would be amazing. I've already been advised to treat hot spots and potential blisters early but there must be others? How many calories are people catering for even 3,000 seems a little light for me, currently i'm packed for 4,000 but that is based on very little knowledge.

I'm with Agnes on this one. 4000 calories sounds excessive. I've talked to guys who have done many of these races and from what I understand, most people end up bringing way too much and dump most of their food after the second day. Also, with the amount of stress that we're placing on our bodies, we're really not going to be physically able to shove freeze dried food down our throats. I think load up on carbs, protein and sweets. 3000 should be more than enough

4000 calories is a lot!! ;) I did equipment check last yr at Gobi and even the big guys were packed for a bit more than 3,000...But it's ok to bring more, coz after the equipment check you can drop some in your hotel luggage. See you in 2 wks. Cheers.
