Gobi March (2013) blog posts from Andrew Reynolds

07 June 2013 01:26 am (GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi

Well i am sure you must have seen from the web that the race was stopped early yesterday, managed to finish 52km before it was stopped due to snow, hail, rain and freezing cold. That said we got over the worst of the course, there was only one big hill left. Some of the most amazing scenery though.

I managed to team up with Lourens and we were actually going along quite nicely by the time it ended, steadily eating up the kms. At more than one stage we were wearing black garbage bags as the rain and hail pelted down.

Rest day today, so i am just recuperating for the short day tomorrow for the finish.
Thanks to Davids foot taping lessons, i have not had one blister yet. However, i did manage to lose 3 toenails on stage 4. Looking forward to a couple of frosties tomorrow!!

Thanks to everyone for the encouragement and messages, really appreciated. See you soon.

Well done for the 55 km, but a bit lucky you didnt do the full though. Very nice detail about the toe nails though. Good luck for the last 10 km

04 June 2013 02:25 am (GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi

Last night was raining and our tent was leaking. After complaining to management we got allocated new room for today, nicely air-conditioned, room service great.

Start this morning was quite cold, but heated up substantially later. About 20km in my knee caved in and I slid for easily 15m. I’m sure it must have looked spectacular. 10 minutes after that the pain was really bad. I sensibly stopped and retaped it (Thanks for showing me how Donna). Directly after that was a mountain climb – very tough. Had to use my hands at times.

Taking each stage at a time, hopefully my knee does not swell further overnight. Finished in 6:25 today, other than the pain, felt ok.

Chat tomorrow.

Well done ! we r all very glad you did so well in the 55 km yesterday - it must have been tough ! Still waiting to hear some news - everyone worried as u have not blogged for 3 days ! Ronan did really well. Got silver in 6 sprint, long jump and tball throw. Then bronze in 25 m breaststroke and silver in 100m freestyle relay. Tball yesterday was as stressful as always and they were lucky to make it to the final, lost and got silver again. Other team was way better than them. Just soccer left today, so should be interesting ! Let us know how u are doing - do I need to organise a wheelchair for pickup at the airport ? Lul,

How did you trip??? I thought you had those walking poles... How is the climbing??? Some of the photos are quite cool and it actually looks quite hard... Good luck with the rest of it and dont let the knee stop you!!!

03 June 2013 08:34 am (GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi

Today was much better. my electrolytes finally agreed with my body, so i felt better. Knee still swollen and sore, but thats an old story now. Came in at 6:02 today. a lot easier than yesterday, but tomorrow is going to be tougher, more hilly.
Weather was weird, started off relatively cool, then sweltering heat and just after i finished there was a brief storm.
Great campsite, next to a stream.
Ronan, good luck with Fobissea.
Well' its off for a massage now, then the same procedure, ice cold beer, freeze dried meal, ice-cream and then hit the king size bed and recharge for tomorrow.
Love to all

Andy, over beers at Q88 last night we decided to call in reinforcements. Moullin flying in... Returning via Tokyo for some reason... Looks like you are hitting your stride in time for the long day. Must be the king size bed and fluffy pillows that RTP now provide at camp. Get it done as beer, steaks and red wine are waiting!

First day under the belt. It was hot, but not as bad as it could have been. I was really going well until half way, 2:45 for first half, ended with 7:15ish. Second half was brutal on my knee, very heavy underfoot, very rocky. Painful. Regroup now and try be ready to start again tomorrow.

Matt, not so much about the old man. Next time you are coming with me (oh, wait, I decided I was not going to do it again).

Thanks everyone for the blogs, really nice to hear from everyone. Michelle & Mark, great to hear from you guys.

Anyway my freeze dried meal is getting cold, the ice-cream is melting and I can see the frost melting on my beer. Chat again tomorrow.

Hello Andy! Sending you goedspa (sp?) from here with lots of the "goed"! Well done on even CONTEMPLATING this thing especially with the negative talk from your knee. Keep it quiet! Hope tomorrow goes well - one day at a time, and before you know it, you WILL be having proper meat and a beer! x

How are doing Mate? That first day sounded brutal, especially with a dodgy knee. Try running on the other leg next time! By the way, expectations for catching up for a beer soon have just been elevated.....if you can run for 3-4 days in the Gobi, then you can make it over here for a night out.......not sure which one is tougher on the body actually. Take care, go hard. Cheers, Mark.

Life in Hong kong is going on as usual: boring school, an hour of math, 2 hours of literacy, 1 and a half hours of topic and 2 hours of science with an extreamly boring book for the rest of the day. I hope you understand that you have to drag me out of school! Good luck with your race

At camp now, just eaten the first freeze dried meal. Reminded myself why I eat so much meat. All set and ready to start at 8am tomorrow morning. Looks like it is going to be a hilly course (nice). Matt, let meknow how the rugby goes. I will let you have a little more detail tomorrow as we progress through what looks to be an awesome course.
