Gobi March (2013) blog posts from Joseph McCann

I did it!
Yesterday's long stage was by far the toughest most rewarding run/race I've ever completed.
Thankfully I was one of the nine lucky competitors that were able to finish the stage before it was abandoned, due to atrocious weather conditions.
I crossed the finish line hand-in-hand, with the three event leaders and Davide from Italy(6th) in 9 hours 7mins after 74km and nearly 3000 metres elevation gain.

I'd decided before the race that I was going to stick with the lead group until the wheels fell off (go hard or go home right). After reaching checkpoint two, dripping with sweat due to humidity levels well into the eighties me athe race leaders began a 20km climb into the Tian Shan mountains.  Not long after starting the climb, it started pouring rain.
The higher we got the colder it got and it wasn't long before the rain had turned to hail. Due to the fact that every ounce of energy I had was going into sticking with lead group, It hadn't dawned on me how bad the conditions had got. It wasn't until we stopped as a group to put on our jackets and I couldn't undo undo my pqack because I had no control over my numb limbs ( I ended up using my teeth). Finally once we had reached the top of the peak approx 2800 metres, we pushed on as a group through the next couple of checkpoints until we reached another 12km climb.  At the top of this cimb we were met with one of the best views I can recall.  We decended through picture perfect green hills that resembled a golf course, with a perfect view of Lake Sayram, with snow capped mountainstowering above it.I don't remember much of that last section as My mind and body was gone after pushing so hard for so long.

Crossing the finish with local news crews everywhere, hand in hand with world class athletes was a special moment... especially knowing what we'd just been through together.
We were pretty much ferried straight into a jeep, then a bus to the applause of all the locals on the bus.  It was only then that we'd heard the race had been abandoned.  Even our camp was abandoned due to the weather and we spent the night in Yurks(mongol huts) at a local village, twenty competitors to a hut.   I feel for all those, that didn't get to feel the immense joy of finishing the stage that the whole week was building towards.  Regardless of whether everyone got to finish the long stage, they're all legends in my books for just making the start line.

Finishing with the frontrunners on the toughest stage and be placed where I am, is a testament not only how hard I trained for this event but also how hard I've pushed myself each and every stage.  I actually just got a tap on the shoulder by one of the events team who siad that I was actually placed higher overall than two of the favorites coming in to the event (Joel and Davide)... Crazy!

It's been a week since I've showered, it's been a week since I've used a toilet, it's been a week since I ate something that wasn't in a freeze dried pack and it's been a week since I slept on a bed.... I've loved every minute of it.  As you could imagine my mouth is watering at the thought of peking duck, dumblings and beer.... Not long now.

Regardless of the result tomorrow I couldn't be happier with how this week has planned out, even if I have destroyed the pain receptors in my brain permantly.  There's no greater feeling knowing that you've given your all to something. Although I was filled with doubts, fear and pain heading in due to the two hernias, the main reason I was able to push on was because of the support from my family and my rock, Nay.  Same can be said for being able to push on each stage, was because of the supportive messages I've received, you've almost bought an emotionally wrecked man, to man tears. Can't wait to get back and see everyone.

Cheers.

Joey Fabulous effort, congratulations. Everyone here has been following along in awe of what you've achieved. So inspired are we that I ran to Melbourne and back over the long weekend, Reda swam to New Zealand, Lew rode his bike to Perth and JL popped his head into a gym but didn't like the smell. Enjoy a day or two of R and R, get the exam out of the way and we'll see you in a few days. Again mucho congratulations. Burnsie and the sales team.

05 June 2013 02:58 am (GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi

Toughest day yet!

So it looks like a sprained my ankle (minor) sliding down a steep rock wall with about 15km to go in stage 3.  I could barely walk on it last night, but after waking up (think I was already awake) every 3 hours last night  and gulping down some anti-inflammatories I woke up ready to RACE!

For the first two checkpoints today we ran across wide open hilly pastures with the snow-capped Altai mountains towering over us, breathtaking.  All the local farmers and military were all out along the course cheering us on.  l was going well until we hit a big downhill section that took us through a town.  This downhill section was also about the time my painkillers had worn off and my ankle really started giving me grief.  I had some ibuprofen at  the last checkpoint and once that kicked in, I was able to run hard again and was able to grab 4th place back.

Tomorrow is the big bopper!  76km through the mountains.  Tomorrow’s stage will also involve running over to the top of a mountain over a half a km higher than Mount Kosciuszko. Good thing I’ve been training hard at the Sydney altitude centre.

Anyway I’m going to rest up in the tent, with my tent mates and get some last minute laughs in before tomorrow’s tough stage.

I just got everyone’s emails and blog comments (spreadsheet wasn’t available yesterday) and big thanks to everyone, it’s just what the doctor ordered before tomorrow’s stage!

Although my body is in pieces, mentally I’m feeling strong and regardless of how the injuries hold-up, tomorrow I’m going to give it everything I have… and then some!

Whatever it takes!

Joe, it's killing me not knowing how the Long March went! I am sure you are doing well - only 14 km to go. I am more proud of you than I have words to express. Run like the wind tomorrow, Joe. You are nearly there. Keep enjoying the magnificent scenery - not many people on earth have been there. I now know beyond any shadow of a doubt that you can achieve anything you set your mind to. Good luck with the final stage. Whatever happens, we all respect and love you beyond measure. At the risk of becoming boring, Joseph my Joseph, Coeur de Lion, boxing kangaroo, this is your race. Great work Joe to still be there in 5th - amazing. Enjoy reading your blog. It sounds wonderful country to run and climb through even though so hard. THe running group were all pleased and admired your efforts and results - May is now becoming your greatest fan with surprise that it isn't being reported here in Australia. Also Ross in the running group whose son ran last year in the North Face was surprised you didn't have any sponsorship since so many on that shorter run had some. Next time I'm sure you'll have some. I've just had a Dimple to toast your efforts so far. Well done son and hope that ankle holds up for you tomorrow, love Dad

You are amazing to be able to keep focused and so determined - you are an amazing inspiration to anyone wanting to achieve a goal. talk kindly to your ankle and it will carry you through..celebration is around the corner and laughter is still the best support ..You have it all champion... 04 June 2013 09:11 am (GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi

Today’s stage was probably the most picturesque run I’ve ever been on.  In saying that though, the scenery was more Swiss Alps than dusty desert.

The stage started off through some nice rolling mountains, along some goat trails.  We then made a way into the mountains through amazing forest trails running alongside a rushing river which we crossed numerous times across suspended bridges.

I’m sure most blogs today will mention the massive climb between checkpoint two and three.  The climb started off through a thick, muddy, mossy forest and slowly climbed up the side of the exposed mountain face .  Getting up did involve using all fours at time.

I actually loved the climbs throughout today’s stage.  It allowed me to make up so much ground on the machines leading the pack and I was even coming 2nd place for a time.  I put this down to the countless afternoons spent running up and down my 20 floor office block stairwell.

Again it was a tough slog out there today, a bit of pain but thankfully no massaging of any protrusions as of yet, touch wood.    I’m absolutely loving the duals out there with the other guys in the top 10.  I’m in awe of how good these guys run but at the same,  I’m going to make them earn every inch.

Looking forward to lacing up the boots and battling it out again tomorrow.

Cheers guys

03 June 2013 09:05 am (GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi

Today was a tough day!
It was also a good day, as I managed to equal my previous best placing for a 4 Desert stage, 5th!
Quite a bit of discomfort from my injury today, and as a result of that I had to fight for every metre. Good thing I'm a competitve bugger, or I may have fallen way off the pace!
I really struggled on the last 10km of todays stage but the struggle was worth it, as the campsite for tonight is in an awesome location.  The site is perched on a beautiful little clearing next to an ice cold stream (great for icing the feet), flowing down from the massive mountains that dwarf us on either side.  Camp life is awesome, great atmosphere, great people and some great laughs.

Anyway I'm going to keep this short and sweet as I'm cramping up.
Thanks for the comments and emails, it's given me a big boost!

Bring on stage 3 baby!

Stage 1 DONE!

So good to finally get out there and RUN!  I did feel mild discomfort (I would liken it to stitch - 6 inches South of the stich border) for  every step of that loooong stage, thankfully my body held together and I was actually able to give it a red hot go.
The course was stunning, rolling mountians on all sides, strange rock formations and some beautiful views from the top of a few of the mountains, that we got to the top of the hard way.

Although I ran pretty much the whole stage alone, without another runner to be seen either way I looked, still wasn't alone....
I actually blessed to share the course with all kinds local, exotic creatures.  I saw cows, goats (by the hundred), sheep, weird looking wild camel and some massive eagles.

Still very early days...
I'm going to take each day as it comes hopefully my body can hold up!

Cheers,
Joey Mac

Midwinter Tuesday morning meeting

Posted On: 03 Jun 2013 11:15 pm

Joe, just had Daniel in and you've got a shitload of calls to make. We are currently in our morning meeting and looking for the stage 2 results - not sure why the delay in loading them - must be because you've hit the lead and racing away. But hopefully you've pulled up OK for day two. We've moved a pop-plant into your seat and nothing seems any different - same dull conversation and insights. The plant seems to be quicker than you on the uptake. Ha Ha. Regards The Midwinter folk you left behind!

First contact…

Well after 3planes and 32 plus hours in transit I finally arrived in the wild West of China late Wed night!

for those of you who know the news I received last Thursday, should also know difficulty I had in deciding whether or not to continue on with the race…

Although the last week has been extremely tough both mentally and physically, but I’ve backed myself, and couldn’t be happier to be lining up at the start line tomorrow.

I see this as a massive victory in itself.

It’s 8pm here, 30 degrees and still broad daylight.  The sun sets at about 10:30pm, so much for an early night.  the atmosphere here is great and have already been lucky enough to meet a heap of legends from all over the world, plenty of laughs.

Thanks everyone for the support.  Big thanks to nay for relaying all the support.

Nervous about how tomorrow will play out but pretty bloody excited too.  Peace.

What a great effort, Joe, 6th on the first stage. Couldn't see any result for the second stage yet. Glad to hear you are enjoying the country and its scenery, even when it's hard going.
