Gobi March (2012) blog posts from Mallette De la Riva

15 June 2012 04:40 am (GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi

So pleased that Ive completed the Long March, the highlight of this event, in just over 14hrs (75km). I thought I could run & walk it but after CP3, I pulled my sticks out and decided my arms will have to do some of the work. From there on, I power walked the course (which was flat mostly from start to finish). The view around us was awsome with the snow capped . mountains of Kyrgestan along one side. When I reached camp I was overwhelmed with joy and gratification for achieving my goal. I thanked God for the strength and will power to press on as quickly as I could. I was lucky to be with a group of nice chaps and were very good company from CP4. Then they were around again from CP7 to the finish so I was not alone in the dark. I was treading along in the dark for about 1.5hrs. Not bad. I would have wanted to be in before dark(aound 22:00, at least) but I had to weigh between finishing with a good time and higher ranking or finishing in good shape, injury free. I favoured the latter coz I want my family to know that Im always thinking of them and that I would make sensible decisions for their sake. And, I,d like to be able to do something like this again in the future. The org.-er did a superb job. I felt I was cared for all along the route and in camp. Hooray to the volunteers and medical staff and everyone else. And, I did'nt get lost, the course was well marked.

You might be wondering what goes on in your head when you're on your own walking/running for KMs on end. LOTS! It was not boring after all. For one you had to think of your hydration and nutrition and make sure it's taken in on time. BTW, I got so sick of the sweet stuff and went for the salty snacks. I had to stay concentrated on the course. I thought of my family and everything going on at home. I also thought of the other 50yr old competitor who was far ahead of me. Also thought of how much I enjoyed days 2,3,& 4 because there were more hills and that I was hating the flats. I was also thinking of all those that donated to the HKSR to support my Gobi Challenge. I thought I owe it to them to finish. Having said that, I also owe it to my family to finish coz I've been away this long so I better come home with the finisher medal. I also owe it to all my very good friends who have been supportive and helpful in big and small ways throughout training. I'm very thankful for each day that passes and all the blessings it brings. Got to sign off now.

Hi Folks, I finished today's gruelling day. Am safe and sound at camp. Today started with a run up heavens gate. I started this morning feeling tired so I decided to be the tourist for this first part of the race. We climbed up heavens gate to enjoy the breathtaking view and my run actually started on the way down. Then that was followed by ascending and descending the steepest hills ever and it lasted, for me, a good 4 hours. I have to say it was brutal. Thank God for all that training I did in HK. It paid off. We ran several ridges and if you have vertigo, you'd just freak out. After that we were on river beds and more riverbeads and this time my feet got wet. Water at some parts were knee deep with strong current. At one point I was holding hands with a fellow from the Czech Rep. Sorry Alain, no choice. Overall the day was challenging and interesting. Im back at camp and have to turn in early coz tomorrow is an early wakeup for the Long March. We will be bused to the starting point. Have to go to the medical tent again, for foot care. The next time I write will be friday. Miss you my darlings. And to all who gave me comments, thank you for all your kind words. It mean so much to me.

Mallette, looks like you did a great time for the Long March, and you have all of today to rest at camp! I look forward to reading your blog post about the Long March! After the frustration and upset of not being able to participate in the Gobi March last year, I hope that your patience and determination have paid off with a memorable experience this year, and one you can be proud of!

Posted On: 15 Jun 2012 03:19 am

Hey, You did that long March in a very short time! You are doing so great! Hang in there, because Joost is already counting on you for the ladies dragonboat! So keep some energy for that, because we want to win! Kidding... Just another 15 KM (?) to go and you have done it! I told you , no problem for Mallette! And good you are holding hands with someone!!! I can imagine already what you look like : thin as a stick, no fat, easy to be washed away by a flood! Have a nice rest today and enjoy tomorrow to the full! It is your last day and you will feel like it has been over too fast (at least, that's how I felt). hughug. kobi

Posted On: 14 Jun 2012 10:24 am

Love, very good, i hope that your blisters are under control, as far as holding hand is concerned, anything as long as you come back to us in one piece! and i will agree with Wendy better a guapito since you have to do it but i don't think there was no choice anyway. So, since you will read this after the long march, I hope you are not completely exhausted, because we hope to get back home a happy mom and not a dry pack of bones packed with dry skin, so for the finish line on saturday you can hold all the hands you want. After that, on Saturday according to your condition please confirm your flight schedule with the airline, if you're to exhausted to travel back, take one more day there, call Maria if necessary, if you need me to pick you in Guangzhou just tell me, my visa is valid, I just go to pick you at the airport. Text me on saturday when you are back in the hotel that I can call you. Love you.

Posted On: 14 Jun 2012 08:59 am

Fantastic effort Mallette, just the long day to tackle and you're home and dry. Keep thinking Beer and Pizza.

Posted On: 14 Jun 2012 08:21 am

Good Luck for the Long March tom. i'm sure you will fly. ( i hope you at least chose a Guapito to hold hands with - sorry alain) cuidate, xxx

I just read all the emails and comments and want to say thank you all for the supportive words and concern. Alain, sorry Im causing you to worry about me too much. Im doing great and just fine. Im actually surprised with myself. The course was tougher today. The terrain rocky and it was difficult to accelerate. The hills were enjoyable coz the only way down was to slide on the loose gravel and stones. Got to thank you Kobi for being with me training in the hills of Lantau. I remembered you Wendy and our "run 1 walk 1" running method (that is, run from flag to flag and walk the next one) coz it made the course shorter than I expected. So far the timing of food and salt tablets is on schedule. Im drinking more. Sometimes sipping every 2-3 minute. When I get to camp I take a nap all covered up so I dont get cold. Then after a rest I eat all my food. Im so pooped by the end of the day, I actually have a good sleep. So 3 down and 3 more to go. Tomorrow will be a bit more difficult. At the moment Im averaging around 6hrs per day. My darlings dont worry Im doing very well.n Everything is working out so far. Another thing that helps is that everyone here is so nice and helpful and supportive, the volunteers and the competitors. Ive just been to the medical tent to show the doctor my blisters to make sure their not infected. The doc was so nice to cover them up for me with proper tape. Ive got 1 more blister in  my toe and on my clavicles and on my back from the rubbing of the bag. No worries, its just pain. It gets numb when Im out there. I got to go coz others are waiting in line and its getting cold. My darlings I miss you lots and I cant stop saying this...Im doing fine and am having fun out here.

Hey Mallette, wonderful girl! Doing fantastic! I am reading everybody's comments as well. I would say : don't take it as a race! Pace yourself and enjoy. That's the main thing. And I have been reading how beautiful the scenery is : well, promise me to have loads of pictures when you come back. I book a day with you to see them! Seems like this course is much nicer than the one I did...:( Stay safe! I am glad to hear you went to see the doctor for your blisters. That's good. At least you know they are taken care of as should be. Was reading the breaking news, seems like stage four was quite tough and then stage 5 is the 80 Km. Pace it the way with did and you will be totally fine! Take time to eat on this one. Going to bed now. Thinking a lot about you and what you are doing. Good to hear you are drinking well. ENJOY! hughug. kobi

10 June 2012 05:37 am (GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi

Hi to my darlings, family and friends, Arrived in Camp 2 Tashpushka in good condition and good spirits. The course was changed so  instead of 42KM we did 32 today. That was good news at race start. The course today was flat mostly. I ran mostlly until CP1, then run/walk till CP2 and then mostly walked til Igot to camp. Conditions were good. It was windy (cool) all the way. We're doing a home stay which means the locals have welcomed us to their homes. I have a nice spot that's a bit more comfy than last nightat camp. Oh last night.... I turned in at 9 and woke up at 5:40. I had a relatively good sleep. The wax earplugs worked. Thanks J for that. Repacking was a bit of a chore and a workout in the morning. Fortunately I got everything back in again. I didnt mention that I managed to shave off nearly 1KG from my pack' back in the hotel before bag check and it finally weighed 9.2 kg. Well after today I realized that I still have more than what I think I can consume over the next few days. Well I'll touch on this at the end when I know for sure. My darlings, I miss you a lot. Was pretty much on my own for most of the course. On the third hour there were few infront of me and when I looked behind, now one there. I told myself to pick up the pace and stay with the pack infront of me. When I heard the beat of the drums from a distance, that felt good. The finish was near. Im doing fine and looking forward to tomorrow. Today was considred an easy course and tomorrow will be moderate. So I expect a bit of a challenge and climbs. BTW I have been drinking...a lot, more than I normally consume, my hands were swollen in the course. My alarm was set to beep every hour to tell me to eat but I was eating before the beep. When energy was low, I went for the shot blocks. My feet are not swollen but I have one tinny winny blister on the L heel. Im good and off now to partake fo my food ration. Luv you lots my darlingsAlain, Daniel, & Marc. And to all of you who are supporting me and the Hong Kong Society of Rehabilitation, Thank you. All I can think of is to finish.

09 June 2012 05:04 am (GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi

It was a 2 hour bus ride to camp1. Its been meeting many competitors from the various countries. Everyone is friendly and positive. Most of those Ive met have done 1 desert  or more races before. Most in my tent have. There are 10 of us in the tent, 3 women and 7 men. The view is spectacular. We are surrounded by mountains. There is a nice cool breeze but sun is frying my skin. I wish I had a SPF140 coz I think thats whats I need now. Unfortunately its only 70 that is available in the market. The campers are all of the tents and hanging out. Its a really friendly atmosphere. Im excited for tomorrow. I havent decided yet if Im walking or running or doing a combination. with more walking . Lets see. We're in a bit of altitude 1690m, I think. That tells me to pull back a bit so I dont run out of breath.....Got to go. It'll be rude if I dont get up to see the cultural show. The locals' afterall, met us on arrival. Blog you manana, bukas, demain, tomorrow, ashita.

The Gobi March will be my first EVER multiday ultra marathon. I'm very excited and I'm now preparing. For one, I've done (only) long distance races recently and am power hiking with my 6KG (at the moment) back pack. The other thing I'm doing is getting my equipment organized and being sensible on  what to bring and not to bring. Then there is also my fund  raising, which is the most important. The physical challenge is one thing...which I think is the easy part. The other challenge is helping those who cannot help themselves. One of my goals for the Gobi March is to focus on raising funds for children who need rehabilitation. Visit my webpage,  http://www.cyberrun.hk/GobiMarch/Mallette/  Help me to put smiles on their faces with your much needed contributions. Thank you...Thank you and thank you (Mallette de la Riva from the Philippines residing in Hongkong)

Hi Mallette, I also found lots of racers in different events forgot this major issue - fund raising. Very nice to seeing your "aside from racing". It's true. The most important part of this event is fund raising for "The Hong Kong Society for Rehabilitation ". So proud of being a friend with you. Keep training and believe you could perform very well in Gobi. Looks forward to trekking/ running with you. Finger crossed, ck

Hey Malette, I am always inspired by people like you. Good luck with the training and the fundraising, you chose a very worthwhile charity. Love, Joelle

Hey Mallette, I wish you all the best over there! Have heard your route is much nicer than the one last year! You lucky one! I am sure you are going to do VERY well! You are soooo strong! Just make sure you drink enough!!! :) Talk to you later. kobi

I'm looking forward to my first multi day & self supported race. The way I see it, the real challenge for any long distance runner/ hiker is, carrying 9KG+ of weight while traversing a course of 40-80KM. I'll have to step up my training now and increase the 3KG of water and snacks I normally carry at any one given session. I'll start with adding a 2KG bag of sugar into by backpack and progressively increase that. I will be using the OMM 25L. Will update on how that goes.

Gyllegas fordrer blot endnu flere slagtesvin.Man me5 finde andre lf8sninger pe5 energiproblemet i transportsektoren. Videreudvikling af sol & vind, brint etc.Og man bf8r i langt hf8jere grad markedsff8re Samsf8 som en SUND f8, hvor f8kologisk landbrug med specialafgrf8der skal ve6re det store lokomotiv.Samsf8 som VEd8 og d8kologisk d8.

Hey Mallette, I also used the OMM32. Liked it but I thought the shoulder straps were not padded enough. The pain really hit the shoulders around day 3. Some of us strapped their shoulders with tape, others cut a piece of their sleeping mat to make some extra padding on the spot. Might have to think about something in advance and try it out! Just a suggestion. kobi
