Hi everyone! Here only a quick update. We had a solid Stage 5 and finished the 80K in about 19 hours. We are now among the top 15 women. Winning has never been our goal....but still...you know what I mean! More later....I am soooo looking forward to my cozy sleeping bag.

Today was a great stage for me. First we raced up and down these incredibly beautiful sand dunes. Later it became a bit more boring along the dirt roads. I feel strong and only got a very tiny blister. We changed shoes right after the river crossings of Stage 3. This saved our feet. I guess the high altitude during Stages 1 and 3 were not my cup of tea. However, practising in 100+ degrees in Arizona seemed to be the right prep for today. Running as a team is good for mental support but I guess that we have to spread out a bit more tomorrow in-order to make the 80K "Long March". After that it is just a quick 10-20K sprint to the finish line. My teammates are great and despite varying speeds we moved up in the standings. Winning is not our goal though, finishing in style is! I am ready for a :"really" cold drink, a beer or a glass of champagne or even a "Coke!" Andreas wrote to me that he got inspired to do one of these races together with me in the future, maybe Chile. However, I am not sure if I have it within me. You have to cope with the absolute bare minimum in terms of food and more so hygiene while pushing beyond any known level of physical and mental exhaustion.

...just finished Stage 3. Mentally it is very exhausting and I try to fight through doubts and weaknesses. I did not take the challenge lightly when I prepared for this race, but it is overwhelming. I am determined to keep on going at this point and I know that my family and my friends are with my...it is just hard. The camps are no place for relaxation...they provide the bare minimum and often it is too hot or too cold to sleep. tonight we sleep in a local home. It is the absolute minimum....no Xbox here for the kids and while we have given the family living room, many would consider this as only as a closet. The poverty here is very sobering, even for me, who has seen it before when we lived in Asia.... We will tackle the sand dunes tomorrow after a three hour long ride on a bus to the start of Stage 4. We have to leave the camp at 4AM.

Hey everybody,
 
now the first day is over and it was harder than I imagined!
We started at 8:00 in the morning, all together 152 competitors I think.
The first 10 km were rather easy, ha-ha very misleading!
After that we were surprised with hills and mountains until the end of the stage.
So we are down 34 km and I feel like I could be done entirely.
I ended up with two hot spots, which may develop into blisters- may be not!
The tent is boiling hot and relaxing is not easy outhere, but there is a great comaraderie between the competitors, so many different nationality and everybody gets along well.
The scenery was amazing, beautiful mountains and vast plains, it almost looks like Arizona, just no cactus!
Right now I am not so sure about the whole thing, it will be a much harder challenge that I imagined and I did not take this lightly to begin with!
To my sweet son: I am so happy for you and your great performance,- well done Jukki!
To  my lovely daughter: You have probably found a second home at Decosters!

Ich liebe dich und es hier so viel schwerer als ich gedacht hatte. ich weiss nicht so recht wie und ob ich das alles so schaffe.

Today is my birthday- yes! And I am in Hongkong getting ready for the Gobi, together with my friend Kobi we packed all morning. We fit everything in the backpack- hooray! I miss my two beautiful children already and I hope I will make them proud by finishing the race. For everybody, who is back in Phoenix: Please watch my two sweethearts until I am back! Race starts Sunday and tomorrow we are on our way to Urumqi/ China. Love you all, thanks for supporting me, it means a lot to me!

This is for Gabi: North American Prospects Select Hockey Tournament: The Bobcats 2000 AAA won Game 3 in a convincing fashion 5:2. Now they are one win away from the playoffs. Jukka played strong with incredible toe and glove saves and a team record high number of penalty minutes (12). Holly molly what a goalie!
