Gobi March (2011) blog posts from Mark Rawson

Hi all,

Its Friday morning and DONE IT- not of course the whole race there is one more stage tmrw but that’s a short (11k, lots of hills and will be hot!) walk in the park. What I have done is completed the 80k challenge- YESSSSSSSSS

What can I say about today? Tough tough tough really tough! Started with dunettes (sand in other words and soft!) of 11k, amazingly and thankfully we had cloud cover and rain! Next two stages were trails through the salt flats (hideous ugly desolate area) and here the heat kicked in huge time- another thing I have learned about myself, I don’t cope with this dry heat. Got to CP3 with new running partners Dean and Iny and really thought that was the end of my race- overheated, feeling sick and knowing the real heat was still to come (funny things these Chinese Time zones- means that 2 is heat of the day!!). Choices!!!!!!

Easy, camp down at CP3 with Dean (Iny decided to push on) to 6.30 and hope the heat dropped. What this meant was no chance of a 24 hour finish (unless my running improved dramatically) and also we would be up against cut off times (7.30 was the CP3 one) and the pressure of chasing those through the night.

Pleased to say the plan (!) worked and Dean and I walked (danced actually) across the line at 10 am this morning, 26 hours after the start. So what was it like? Hell if honest, not great scenery, hard work limping through rough terrain with headlamps, long endless roads and pressure. As we went through the course the fall out from other competitors who opted for different approaches hit us- front runners being pulled from the course, others on IVF, one passed out under a bush and helped home by others- have to say guys this race is brutal, it hurts mentally and physically and I will not be doing another.

Huge sense of achievement of crossing that line and look forward to the final line tmrw and a cold beer, steak, chips and loads of salt- of course I'm not counting tmrw as done yet and need to fix my feet tonight, rehydrate and eat- trouble is cant move for the first, feed up of hot water and food pretty much run out!!!

Thank you all for the responses to my blogs over the past few days, they have helped hugely.

Reflection? Yes, I know better who I am (funny its not someone who wants to push himself like this again) which is stupid at my age, so my message to all of you is find something that allows you to reflect and work out who and what you are- not suggesting this challenge but there will be something that allows you time out to do just that.

Ps, its 12.30, 28 hours and 30 mins since the start and still competitors are coming back in- guts, determination and downright stupidty!

Pps one update on Paul for Henley staff- he has done brilliantly, days in front of my times and looking strong.

A fabulous achievement Mark, well done. I had no doubt you would do it! : but then I also had no idea of the size of the challenge. Your posts have been brilliant thank you for sharing it with us. As usual you have not only achieved something for yourself , you have obviously had a huge impact on those you\'ve met along the way. We look forward to hearing more first hand. Remember your first Blog ? Why? - I bet there\'s many more answers that you have now, good for you.

Incredible pops, knew you had it in you. Thinking of you all the time. Lots of lovexxxxx

Posted On: 02 Jul 2011 04:48 pm

Well Mark you've done it!!!!!!! In a very respectable time too, I know I would still be finishing stage 5 next week! You are an inspiration and hopefully whilst you've found yourself you've met incredible people along the way. I noticed Dean has completed and raised a whopping 30,000 dollars for his charity. He speaks volumes of the man you are. We are all proud of you. Love you loads Dawn xxx

Don - Don't say that, was fancying a crack it myself and wondered if he fancied showing me the way next year (and carrying my pack for me but don' tell him that haha...) Did the steak taste good Mark? And was the beer cold? Hope so - you deserve it. Let us know when you're back in civilisation and I'm sure we'd all love to read a final last reflection when your feet have stopped throbbing for long enough to allow you to concentrate. Oh - and I think we all want to meet Dean too - best invite him over for PIP!! xoxox

Posted On: 02 Jul 2011 08:53 am

Son, Now you have found yourself i am sure you know you have some fantastic friends, KKEP THEM they are priceless. Friends!!!! dont let him do this stupid thing again, well not untill next year. Dad

Mark, I shed a tear reading dean's blog. What a special moment dancing over the line together. Congratulations and enjoy a good feed, cold beer and comfortable bed tonight.

Posted On: 02 Jul 2011 02:58 am

Hey Mark After reading Deans blog i just want to congratulate you on getting through the 80k beast. Great effort and proud that you teamed up with Deano. We all sit back home hanging on every word and trying to grasp the horrors of the race. I don't anyone exspected it to be so harsh. Once again fantastic effort and hope you enjoy the steak

Posted On: 02 Jul 2011 02:20 am

Mark, you have us all involved now as we are inter posting between yours and Dean's blogs (Kenyan, Kerri, Dawn and I - and I am sure others will too) - See what you've done! - but typically - you reach many more people than you realise. 'Getting my cheque book out for HKSAS now and more motivated than ever to crack on with PIP - at least that's one thing I can do, as I know that no way in a million' could I haul my ass through the Gobi

Posted On: 02 Jul 2011 02:17 am

Wow...sounds like an amazing experience and I'm not surprised at you supporting Dean T the way you did, after having pulled me around a few courses in the past! All the best for the final stage....should be easier as I guess you are a few kilos lighter by now - ho ho. Beer still on ice for you. Cheers T

Guy - read dean Tullochs blogs - give great insight into your man marks character. Cheers.

Posted On: 01 Jul 2011 06:20 pm

Mark, totally amazed at your achievement here! Not that I didn't think you'd do well, but not realizing just how brutal and how massive a challenge you have taken on and (I am assuming) overcome, like the Top Dog said, great that you have kept up with the posts, they will serve you well as a diary, but they have been great for us all to read, so thanks for that. Can't wait to see you and give you a big man hug (in a purely sporting, metro, non homo way)

Posted On: 01 Jul 2011 06:00 pm

Well done overal bur especialy for the big one, good luck for tomorrow and enjoy it. Dad

Posted On: 01 Jul 2011 05:15 pm

Hey Mark, Just following up on your blog after reading our mate's, Dean Tulloch's. We were all pretty worried about him going into stage 5, and he spoke volumes about the cameraderie between the both of you. We have only met with Dean through the charity he is running for and our lives are blessed with just knowing the man, also blessed that he teamed with you for this stage. Will be following your progress as you cross the finish line, hopefully you will be singing and dancing despite blistered feet. Our best wishes for your endeavours, Kerri

Well yet again what a proud sister i am, feeling incredibility inadequte at the present, with my attempts at getting fit. But again like you I am nearer to fifty and in all honesty I think we should both be settling for the good life with a nice bottle of red wine! Although the Rawson genes means that we can't do that easily. Keep up the good work and definately take pictures of your blisters at least to show Matthew..... will be good practice for his Medical training. Lots of love and push on hard to the end of the race Love Little Sis xx

What to respond to that post? ... You are a true inspiration mark - you may think u only work well in a team, but u did this all by yourself. You are an inspiration as a team player, a team leader, but mostly as an individual ... Truly well done. You are so nearly there, 2 more hours of the race til that long awaited finish line. Take each stride with belief in yourself and with pure pride for achieving what you have achieved this week. Spend that time reflecting purely on what YOU have accomplished this week, and savior that moment that you dance across the final finish line. You deserve it! Enjoy that beer, and the steak - may be the steak first u lightweight ;) (does freeze dried food absorb alcohol well?!) nevermind - worth it!! Drink and be merry! CHEERS to you! Well done you!! xxxx

Posted On: 01 Jul 2011 04:27 pm

A brilliant post. Not sure what I'm more proud of you for - your determination to keep going in the race or the fact you manage to write your blog every day - haha... You're a legend babe :-) Night night - one more 'stint' then the steak and salt awaits. Incredibly proud of you - you deserve every accolade of your growing fan club. xoxo ps and if you're run out of food - steal it from the guy on the IV....he'll not be running after you ;-)

Posted On: 01 Jul 2011 02:49 pm

Remind us again why you are doing this???!!! Hahaha only joking! Sounds slot of fun! You're doing a great job so keep going Uncle Mark! We're all cheering for you back in sunny old England :D xxxx

29 June 2011 06:14 am (GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi

Well that was a day.

37k thats all but it took nearly 12 hours!

Huge sand dunes to start followed by 30+ k of sandy terrain and at one point an unofficial temperature of 50+ degrees (official was 44)!

A lot of very unwell people tonight in camp and many unsure of starting tomorrow. So how was my day?

The plan was to be with the back of the pack and the walkers from the start and that worked well, the dunes were ok (he says!) but stage 2 in the heat of the day was a nightmare. For the first time I took time at a checkpoint- a lot of time. Then the god send- we had to leave CP 2 in a buddy system. Suddenly the whole dynamics of the event changed for me as there were four of us to nurse each other around.

It was interesting as this whole event I looked at as a way to understand myself better and in that one moment I did.

I dont like being alone, I dont like pushing myself, I do like to be part of a team, the camaraderie and mutual support is what I crave in sport and life. Nothing rocket science but enlightening as what was a chore and not enjoyable if honest suddenly changed and yes it took a long time to get home but I enjoyed it- tough and exhausting but good fun.

So tmrw I will race with three of my "team" again and looking forward to it.

Tmrw will be tough_ the long day but I feel ok and so >>>>

See you all soon

Mark

Mark - I think you were out there on stge 4 with my mate Dean Tulloch from Australia. Both of you finished around the same time. Keep working together - he has a massive heart and together you can both beat this beast! CHeers and good luck on the Big March

I am so proud of you, you are doing great sayang, keep it up and it's not long to go now........... TOYA xoxox

Hmmm. Looks like I got that spectacularly wrong then huh? Ok, so heels or not, you win ;-) keep going!!! Xo

Posted On: 30 Jun 2011 02:45 pm

Woooohooooo!!! I just checked in on the results page and saw you've done it! Congrats - huge, huge congrats! How are you feeling? I walked from Sheung Wan to WanChai today and did have a chuckle thinking that nearly finished me off in the heat. Mind you, suppose you're not doing it in heels so I reckon that makes us even :-) Hope the rest of your crew made it and you're snoring by now :-) night night. Xo

Posted On: 30 Jun 2011 01:55 pm

Mark....spot on mate - you've done absoultely amazing - these races are really soul searching!! But you had a hard run-in, not smooth, and to just get on that start line is an achievement and to look at doing the 250km. To do stge 4, a complete bit#$, is a phenomenal achievement - it's harde the longer you are out there - more heat, more water, more food and hydraion/nutrition problem - 50 degree heat and 12hours on your feet is unreal - I take my hat off and you deserve to cross that line. Very, very impressed mate. Rob

Posted On: 30 Jun 2011 06:25 am

Hats off to you Mark! You'll have broken the back of it by the time you read this!

Posted On: 30 Jun 2011 05:40 am

Fabulous post Mark , a real insight and so simple. You reminded me of a quote I liked from a teambuild event ."A snowflake is fragile, but look what they can do when they stick together!" Stick with it!

Posted On: 30 Jun 2011 02:38 am

Looking like you're holding up well, glad to see you've picked up a team. You'll be entertained to know that the remaining Two Old Farts picked up a medal at the weekend's Kayak and Run (over 90 category) :-) Keep going, a lot of people here are following your progress!

Posted On: 30 Jun 2011 02:32 am

Hey mate, read the report on today and first thought - rather you than me! 50 miles in a day - well, that must be a tough one. So glad you have had a chance for some more reflection yesterday - some chance to stop and smell the flowers. Funny, when we had lunch before you left and you told me you'd planned to do most of the walk on your own, I did wonder about that, but knew you'd find the way that was right for you. Good to hear you've got a merry band around you - you could need it today. Bank holiday weekend here this weekend - sunshine forecast for your return into civilisation next week. Been looking for you in the pics - but with several hundred on the website I'm afraid I'm not as dedicated as some in searching thro them for you!! What colours are you wearing? that might help!! See you next week, not long now so keep trying to enjoy it! We've got work to do when you come back so no exhausting yourself too much ;-) xoxo

Posted On: 30 Jun 2011 01:24 am

Fantastic stuff Mark! Long may your progress continue and we look forward to your posting tomorrow, after what is going to be a huge day for you. Good luck!

Hi all,

This needs to be quick as they are shutting the tent and that’s an indication of what a bad day I had.

Actually it was a day of two halves- the first 30k was great felt strong heat not too bad and ran with Shalen fairly comfortably. CP4 and an easy 6.7k to the end and the wheels fell off- made it, crossed the line and have felt +++++__)) since!

Anyway eaten, drunk and slept so sure will be ok later. Trouble is we have a 4am start tmrw bus ride to start at 7am.Big day tmrw as its dunes day and will be hot (44today on that last stage!!). Change of tactic for tmrw which will be sloooooooowwww and probably find a partner to walk with.

Anyway that’s the not so good news the great news is we are staying in a local village tonight- fantastic, must get energy to take some photos.

Anyway thanks for the messages they are keeping me going.

WILY

Love you all

Ps, sharing tent with a father and three sons- had thought that was nice and be great to do with Alex, Greg and Georgie- good luck guys this is a one off for me so you don’t need to worry!

Great post Mark, although I don't think you needed 250k in the desert to figure out that you're a team player, could have told you that myself! Anyway, judging by the posts sounds like your head is holding up brilliantly through this. Keep chugging along!

Posted On: 29 Jun 2011 03:59 pm

Wow time it's going way too fast. At least sitting here it feels like that: It sounds so fantastic that you must want more time. You've not mentioned blisters so either that just too painful, or the feet are doing well. You are doing just great, now remind yourself of your original objective, so definately stop running, slow down for more pictures. There's nothing to rush back for - well there's Business Planning , so see you end of the week after!! Chin up and Carry On. They'll be a pint, or two waiting

Posted On: 29 Jun 2011 06:51 am

Mark, What's all this talk of slippers then? you'll be telling us your ditching the pipe next because you're trying to keep the pack weight down. First meeting with HKRI today on PIP - all went well and a funny story for you when you get home - which wont be long now so stay focussed and do what you need to do!

Posted On: 29 Jun 2011 06:32 am

Mum says good luck and keep well. From me I am sure it is hard but the illation you will feel when its done will be a memory for the rest of your life. Very proud of you, well done. I echo Mum message keep well. Don

Posted On: 29 Jun 2011 12:54 am

Hey darlin' - great achievement so far, well done you. Looks like you're picking up quite a pack of admirers ;-) so I add to their words of support and love and strength to put one foot in front of the other and just keep going!! So what's been hardest so far? Heat? Thirst? (predictive text on iPad translated that to thrust which has entirely different connotations...) Distance? Feet sore? Sounds like you've had plenty of distractions anyway with the scenery and villagers - what a life treasured experience. Off to kick off my programme now. My delegates this week have been treated to regular updates of your progress - so much so that one of them, having followed the race progress, wants to sign up next year. See what you started? Bye for now. Love you too (haha...) - keep up the messages, lovely to hear from you. xoxo

Posted On: 29 Jun 2011 12:12 am

Mark, easy for us here to read those mixed emotions in your words - and to see that last night was mainly frustration that you're feeling. But you are doing well, managing to run some of it too (so much for the aim being only to finish - stubborn determination or what!!) and I know you will turn that frustration back into determination too. You CAN do it - the aches and tiredness u r feeling is normal ... we can see from the pics that u r still looking strong and focused, so keep it up. All thinking of you and admiring you, keep your eye on each of those check points SB! one at a time, n soon there will only be the finish line left! LUSH!!! xox

Extremes!

Woke this morning (actually few times in the night- good to be hydrated!) to mist, thick and dense and visibility of...... my feet!

B.....y cold to, bitter cold with wind and yes rain. After day one how could this be!!

Race start 8am, nope 8.30am nope, 10 am, nope, 12 am yes!! But the mist was still on the high hills and so the course was changed/shortened- 44k down to 20 something.

Good news? Yes, it was a cold day on a flatish course and so recovered well from day one, Bad news? Yes, we will probably have the missed distance added to the course later and being a flatish course it suited the runners of the race who took off only to be seen grinning around the fire as we (Shalen and I) sauntered over the line hours later.

Feeling good, still marvelling at the scenery which has now changed to a beautiful river valley of green and litttle villages. No problems to report other than a few aches and blister under two toe nails (hmm) oh and the idiot who recommended (Shalen) hotel slippers for camp wear- dont think they will last the week!

Not much else to report other than the camaraderie is excellent in the camp and on the course (not that I see many people on the course!).

Thanks for all the messages and see you soon.

WILY

Pride before the fall,

Sure all the blogs say thing- beautiful but brutal!!

Started slow, stayed slow but felt good feeling sooo good I had already written my blog for the day in my head after 25k- ‘what’s all the fuss about’, idiot!

Check point 3 and into the final stage and that wall hit me, again and again. Sooooo hot and just endless empty spaces with some brutal climbs and descents- was really worried until I finished and found everyone had the same experience. Cut off was supposed to be 4.30 and Im sitting here with racers still finishing (6pm)! So relatively Im pleased with the day but dreading tomorrow as the race profile is longer, higher and tougher- could be a very long week.

Anyway few lessons learnt- drink more and eat more plus take more photos. Oh and get the pack weight down- that hurt!

This place really is fantastic, empty but beautiful, stark but full of life.

Time for a snooze (another)- more tomorrow and thanks for the messages back.

Mark

Hey you Awoke last night to a tropical storm raging. Thunder, lightening and plants knocked over. As I mopped up water I was hoping you were having better weather and that it's not heading your way. Your organisers put up a post about soggy sleeping bags. Urgh. Hope you stayed dry, tho knowing you you've lost yours ;-) So easy day yesterday huh with the fog? I don't know, thought this was a challenge? More later... Run Forrest, run!! Xoxo

Hi Mark and Paul - How are the blisters? Saw from the updates, delayed by fog and only 10mtr visability (fog in the desert!?). It all sounds rather brutal (32 deg!) to me sat here in HK, but you must know what you're doing.... Very best of luck to you today! Keep going! Dawn

Gosh call myself an IT/Computing teacher, managed to upload same blog twice.... Good luck for tomorrow big bro. Xx

Well Big Bro you put me to shame, I've sat around the nice cool house waiting for the heat to go out of the day (yes it's blistering here!). However at one point today it was equally challenging - taking Megan out for a driving lesson, Walls and curbs tended to be attracted to us!). Anyway soak your feet, rehydrate yourself and get some well earned rest..... Looking forward to tomorrows blog from a very sunny English classroom. Love little sis xxxx

Hello Mr Sore Feet - well if you haven't, you will... Just a quick message before I hit the hay (with my cup of tea to my comfy bed, haha) to say WELL DONE!! Now personally I would have opted for the over 50s category - your results could have been even more impressive ;-) Ron - nice to see you online too. My mother would be clueless with a computer if I was doing this! Hope you're coming for PIP again - would be ace to see you both. Sorry Mark - back to you.... Hope you're sleeping well and hop to it, you've got a race to continue poppet. Night from Alhambra xxx

25 June 2011 08:54 am (GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi

Hi all,

Arrived at the start of the MARCH and its beautiful, fantastic, out of this world....... but can some one tell me where I am?? Serious, three hours out of Urumqi in a bus is the best I can get at the moment. anyway wherever it is it really is lovely.

Mountains (with snow) surrrond us, we are in a little woods on the edge of a plain and the local village is out in force to watch!! You should all be here, or come here once in your lives.

Tomorrow the race starts and it looks ok(!) a gentle(ish) intro of 36K and not too much ascent, heat though will be something and so Im not taking it for granted. Looking forward to it now, there is a good mix of serious atheletes and weekend warriors so dont feel out of my depth now!

Preparation up to this point...... hmmm thought I was organised but.... lost knife, compass, whistle, lipscreen and a bottle all on the mandatory list of equipment- panic shopping in Urumqi has resulted in the sembalance of gear back in shape. This was follwed by my unbreakable camera breaking and then at check in a triatholon of room visits as I forgot my head along with gear....... Time to relax and get in the zone- actually getting there, this place is doing it for me.

Anyway time to go (yep literlally- hole in the ground ablutions really are state of high living) as I need to eat and reduce the weight of my bulging back pack.

Love to hear from you, posts on this blog come back to me (and everyone else on the race so watch the language) so please send.

WILY

Mark

Hey Mark, By the time you read this day one will be over and done and you'll be truly on your way. Can't believe you lost so much eqt BEFORE the start and broke your unbreakable camera, you donut!! Bet the villagers were rubbing their hands when they saw you coming :-) You're not missing much in DB today - weather is overcast, but sat on the back of the boat writing this and sending you love and strength from us. x

Why indeed?

Why did I enter, why have I not withdrawn, why has training not gone as well as it could, why do i still have gear to buy at this late stage and of course why its taken so long to blog!

Hmmm lots of reasons but the key one is time! And I suppose thats the answer to the first and most important question ahead of the ones above- why am I doing this?

Time to reflect, time to think, time to stop and smell the flowers... Dont get me wrong Im doing the event as a challenge, to push myself and achieve something that is for me significant but above all, over the past few weeks I have come to the main conclusion the driver is time to me, selfish eh!

How often do we truly get away from it all and immerse ourselves in an experience that is out of the normal? Well I can answer for me- never in the past and I am truly now looking forward (yes silly eh!) to the Challenge regardless of the outcome (but of course with a strong desire to finish in one piece!).

Not much more to say at this stage other than training hasn't gone well but Im confident I can do an Eddie Izzard so friends around the world- dont worry!

Mark

'Silly Bugger, there's retreats in Bali you know!! Joking aside, I know you'll get a lot from the challenge Mark and wish you all you would wish for yourself - ALWAYS - you know that Mate! Best foot forward - do that a couple of million times and you'll be done! Your friends in DB are thinking of you throughout!

Go for it! Have fun in the sun

Hi Mark and Paul - Think its all rather bonkers, but best of luck and hope you have lots of err... 'fun'(!). And if camel spiders travel that far west, best avoided. You'll recognise them BIG buggers. Good Luck and may your blisters be small ones!

Dearest Mark I have only admiration for you doing this and so happy you will have the 'me time' you need to think and reflect - just with a pack on your pack and sweat pouring off every part of your body :-) Know that you have your family and friends in HK and around the world, who are rooting for you every step of the way and who have you in their thoughts, hearts and prayers. Martin Luther King once famously said, 'The true measure of a man is not how he behaves in moments of comfort and convenience but how he stands at times of controversy and challenges.' Enjoy your challenge and come back knowing your own measure. With love, strength and hug for when the going gets tough, xoxo

You can do it sayang xoxox

Posted On: 20 Jun 2011 07:31 am

Why ? I hope it's not nearly as hard as the office job. Good Luck

Posted On: 19 Jun 2011 10:30 am

WHY Its because you have inherited and built on the stupid bit in the genes. Im sure it will be hard, wish i was as stupid and doing it. Your Mum and I will be with you all the way well done even better well done if you finish. When it gets tough just remember we want you back preferably in one chunk and still breathing. Love you lots Mum & Dad
