Hi all,
Its Friday morning and DONE IT- not of course the whole race there is one more stage tmrw but that’s a short (11k, lots of hills and will be hot!) walk in the park. What I have done is completed the 80k challenge- YESSSSSSSSS
What can I say about today? Tough tough tough really tough! Started with dunettes (sand in other words and soft!) of 11k, amazingly and thankfully we had cloud cover and rain! Next two stages were trails through the salt flats (hideous ugly desolate area) and here the heat kicked in huge time- another thing I have learned about myself, I don’t cope with this dry heat. Got to CP3 with new running partners Dean and Iny and really thought that was the end of my race- overheated, feeling sick and knowing the real heat was still to come (funny things these Chinese Time zones- means that 2 is heat of the day!!). Choices!!!!!!
Easy, camp down at CP3 with Dean (Iny decided to push on) to 6.30 and hope the heat dropped. What this meant was no chance of a 24 hour finish (unless my running improved dramatically) and also we would be up against cut off times (7.30 was the CP3 one) and the pressure of chasing those through the night.
Pleased to say the plan (!) worked and Dean and I walked (danced actually) across the line at 10 am this morning, 26 hours after the start. So what was it like? Hell if honest, not great scenery, hard work limping through rough terrain with headlamps, long endless roads and pressure. As we went through the course the fall out from other competitors who opted for different approaches hit us- front runners being pulled from the course, others on IVF, one passed out under a bush and helped home by others- have to say guys this race is brutal, it hurts mentally and physically and I will not be doing another.
Huge sense of achievement of crossing that line and look forward to the final line tmrw and a cold beer, steak, chips and loads of salt- of course I'm not counting tmrw as done yet and need to fix my feet tonight, rehydrate and eat- trouble is cant move for the first, feed up of hot water and food pretty much run out!!!
Thank you all for the responses to my blogs over the past few days, they have helped hugely.
Reflection? Yes, I know better who I am (funny its not someone who wants to push himself like this again) which is stupid at my age, so my message to all of you is find something that allows you to reflect and work out who and what you are- not suggesting this challenge but there will be something that allows you time out to do just that.
Ps, its 12.30, 28 hours and 30 mins since the start and still competitors are coming back in- guts, determination and downright stupidty!
Pps one update on Paul for Henley staff- he has done brilliantly, days in front of my times and looking strong.

37k thats all but it took nearly 12 hours!
Huge sand dunes to start followed by 30+ k of sandy terrain and at one point an unofficial temperature of 50+ degrees (official was 44)!
A lot of very unwell people tonight in camp and many unsure of starting tomorrow. So how was my day?
The plan was to be with the back of the pack and the walkers from the start and that worked well, the dunes were ok (he says!) but stage 2 in the heat of the day was a nightmare. For the first time I took time at a checkpoint- a lot of time. Then the god send- we had to leave CP 2 in a buddy system. Suddenly the whole dynamics of the event changed for me as there were four of us to nurse each other around.
It was interesting as this whole event I looked at as a way to understand myself better and in that one moment I did.
I dont like being alone, I dont like pushing myself, I do like to be part of a team, the camaraderie and mutual support is what I crave in sport and life. Nothing rocket science but enlightening as what was a chore and not enjoyable if honest suddenly changed and yes it took a long time to get home but I enjoyed it- tough and exhausting but good fun.
So tmrw I will race with three of my "team" again and looking forward to it.
Tmrw will be tough_ the long day but I feel ok and so >>>>
See you all soon

Hi all,
This needs to be quick as they are shutting the tent and that’s an indication of what a bad day I had.
Actually it was a day of two halves- the first 30k was great felt strong heat not too bad and ran with Shalen fairly comfortably. CP4 and an easy 6.7k to the end and the wheels fell off- made it, crossed the line and have felt +++++__)) since!
Anyway eaten, drunk and slept so sure will be ok later. Trouble is we have a 4am start tmrw bus ride to start at 7am.Big day tmrw as its dunes day and will be hot (44today on that last stage!!). Change of tactic for tmrw which will be sloooooooowwww and probably find a partner to walk with.
Anyway that’s the not so good news the great news is we are staying in a local village tonight- fantastic, must get energy to take some photos.
Anyway thanks for the messages they are keeping me going.
WILY
Love you all
Ps, sharing tent with a father and three sons- had thought that was nice and be great to do with Alex, Greg and Georgie- good luck guys this is a one off for me so you don’t need to worry!

Woke this morning (actually few times in the night- good to be hydrated!) to mist, thick and dense and visibility of...... my feet!
B.....y cold to, bitter cold with wind and yes rain. After day one how could this be!!
Race start 8am, nope 8.30am nope, 10 am, nope, 12 am yes!! But the mist was still on the high hills and so the course was changed/shortened- 44k down to 20 something.
Good news? Yes, it was a cold day on a flatish course and so recovered well from day one, Bad news? Yes, we will probably have the missed distance added to the course later and being a flatish course it suited the runners of the race who took off only to be seen grinning around the fire as we (Shalen and I) sauntered over the line hours later.
Feeling good, still marvelling at the scenery which has now changed to a beautiful river valley of green and litttle villages. No problems to report other than a few aches and blister under two toe nails (hmm) oh and the idiot who recommended (Shalen) hotel slippers for camp wear- dont think they will last the week!
Not much else to report other than the camaraderie is excellent in the camp and on the course (not that I see many people on the course!).
Thanks for all the messages and see you soon.

Sure all the blogs say thing- beautiful but brutal!!
Started slow, stayed slow but felt good feeling sooo good I had already written my blog for the day in my head after 25k- ‘what’s all the fuss about’, idiot!
Check point 3 and into the final stage and that wall hit me, again and again. Sooooo hot and just endless empty spaces with some brutal climbs and descents- was really worried until I finished and found everyone had the same experience. Cut off was supposed to be 4.30 and Im sitting here with racers still finishing (6pm)! So relatively Im pleased with the day but dreading tomorrow as the race profile is longer, higher and tougher- could be a very long week.
Anyway few lessons learnt- drink more and eat more plus take more photos. Oh and get the pack weight down- that hurt!
This place really is fantastic, empty but beautiful, stark but full of life.
Time for a snooze (another)- more tomorrow and thanks for the messages back.
Mark

Arrived at the start of the MARCH and its beautiful, fantastic, out of this world....... but can some one tell me where I am?? Serious, three hours out of Urumqi in a bus is the best I can get at the moment. anyway wherever it is it really is lovely.
Mountains (with snow) surrrond us, we are in a little woods on the edge of a plain and the local village is out in force to watch!! You should all be here, or come here once in your lives.
Tomorrow the race starts and it looks ok(!) a gentle(ish) intro of 36K and not too much ascent, heat though will be something and so Im not taking it for granted. Looking forward to it now, there is a good mix of serious atheletes and weekend warriors so dont feel out of my depth now!
Preparation up to this point...... hmmm thought I was organised but.... lost knife, compass, whistle, lipscreen and a bottle all on the mandatory list of equipment- panic shopping in Urumqi has resulted in the sembalance of gear back in shape. This was follwed by my unbreakable camera breaking and then at check in a triatholon of room visits as I forgot my head along with gear....... Time to relax and get in the zone- actually getting there, this place is doing it for me.
Anyway time to go (yep literlally- hole in the ground ablutions really are state of high living) as I need to eat and reduce the weight of my bulging back pack.
Love to hear from you, posts on this blog come back to me (and everyone else on the race so watch the language) so please send.

Why did I enter, why have I not withdrawn, why has training not gone as well as it could, why do i still have gear to buy at this late stage and of course why its taken so long to blog!
Hmmm lots of reasons but the key one is time! And I suppose thats the answer to the first and most important question ahead of the ones above- why am I doing this?
Time to reflect, time to think, time to stop and smell the flowers... Dont get me wrong Im doing the event as a challenge, to push myself and achieve something that is for me significant but above all, over the past few weeks I have come to the main conclusion the driver is time to me, selfish eh!
How often do we truly get away from it all and immerse ourselves in an experience that is out of the normal? Well I can answer for me- never in the past and I am truly now looking forward (yes silly eh!) to the Challenge regardless of the outcome (but of course with a strong desire to finish in one piece!).
Not much more to say at this stage other than training hasn't gone well but Im confident I can do an Eddie Izzard so friends around the world- dont worry!
