Hi again everyone !
after one day in the heat (very hot...) and not managed to sleep so well because of it, we struggled to eat as our last expedition food was spoiled. probably humidity and stuff got in the ziploc bag and we could not eat it at all ! so we had to try to eat oatmeals as dinner. not great and we were starving...
then listened to one of the local staff team for some explanation about the area and the local culture, quite interesting but difficult to follow after 40 hours with little sleep (almost none actually !)
went to bed relatively early and slept like a stone, but was woke up by a SAND STORM !! we would have had everything in this week. it is incredibly amazing, the tent had been left open for the air to breath in but now the air was replaced by sand flowing through the tent. we could not open our eyes and it was very irritating and had to close the tent quickly... hopefully we did not have this in the day while walking/running !
finally the last stage began, turned on the ipod and put it on randow and the first song title that came was "On the road again" bu katie melhua (amuzing coincidence isn't it !?) and was a bit longer than expected, about 14km. what a beautiful red canyon to finish with ! my heel was still painful and had to walk slowly with chopsticks (ho sorry, not chopsticks, walking sticks ;-) ) blisters were hurting also quite a lot as a new one came during the last stage. i did not know it would exist but nail blisters are quite awful...
at one point i just tried running and realized it was not doing any more pain than walking, so i ran the last hour and it was so great ! a wonderful sensation in this scenary. at one point we reached the summit of the canyon and could see the buddist village and the finishing line. what a great view !
near the end we would pass buddist temples and statues with local music and drums being played... i cannot describe my joy and my feelings at that time, i guess it was my best smile and one of my best moment of happiness ever
passed the finish line so happy that i cried of emotions, people were cheering up and the place was stunning.
rushed to the food (the organizers serve food at the finish line) and had two big plates in 5 minutes ! amazing feeling of having real food after a week :-) !
then went back to the finish line to cheer up the other competitors arriving, such a intense moment...
i would remember especially the arrival of the son and his mother together, so touching and beautiful, congratulations to both of them !
bertille would finally arrive also full of joy !
had still my grandpa picture and took it out, it was like the last piece of the puzzle arrived by itself at the finish line and the buddist temple just in front of the finish line was aiting for him, and for me to leave his picture there. had a nice moment of thoughts and tears for him, left the picture there under a small set of stones and felt releived...
i would like to thank you again for all your support during this week
it was been so extraordinary and intense that i guess my words are way below the level of emotions that i really went through, either physically or mentally, i will need some time to digest this for sure
one last thing, whatever goal you want to accomplish, remember that all the good excuses not to reach it and all the means to get it as well are in your head... just choose which one of the two would lead you...
something i thought about in the bus is that for the next one i would love to be able to run more of it and do less walking... but wait a second, did i just mention a "next one" ?!!

first thing, am really touched by all your messages, they are of great help and am glad you are enjoying following the race. thanks to all of you so much for your words everyday, it sends some strength here and it is much needed
The name of the stage speaks for itself. it was indeed LONG ! woke up at 6am, start of the race at 8am and finish at... 9am !! 25 hours on the field and 27 hours without sleep (and more as i am now blogging before taking a nap...)
total distance covered : 83km, almost 2 marathons
i will not mentionned the blisters and their inconvenience as it was a very small detail compared to the enormous challenge that all the rest was...
started fairly well with a 'cool' weather but quickly became extremely hot again... between 45 and 50 in most parts and more than 50 in some parts !! it was terrible. you can actually feel the water flowing out of your body as you are walking in the sun. we kept drinking to avoid dehydration, but the sun in some way would make you tired anyway.
the stomach would also be fed up with liquid and snacks, it is a strange feeling to be starving and not able to eat anything. i was actually quite hungry but could not take all the food i took for today. it is amazing how the body can work so long with so little food. but i did feel weak most of the time too !
people were getting sick and tired one by one and about 30 competitors out of 150 had to withdraw from the race and stop. it was sometimes tempting to do the same thing as we struggled to move forward and find inspiration for the finish line that was so far away and seemd irreal !
the diffiulty experienced today and overall this week is way beyond what we imaged before coming. it was extremly brutal and the mental motivation is definetly stronger than the legs.
we reached the 57km point at 1am in the night and had a hot dinner before leaving at 2am. so hard to move forward when you are sleepy and when it is all dark around !
before sunset we had the chance to see a group of camels drinking in a small lake, was beautiful. there were small lakes and they were actually fully covered on the sides with salt crystals. nature is sometimes quite amazing...
went by ruins of an old village which was 200 years old ! surrounded by a nice group of wild sheeps
one more fear with bertille, at sunset she almost walked on a snake ! just 1cm away from her shoe... by the way saw a scorpion walk thourgh our tent yesterday as well !
we finished with leg pain and a very slow pace but made it to the finish in tears due to emotion and being so tired... we finished together with bertille and it was a great emotion and feeling of accomplishment
to be honest, they are no words to describe how difficult this has been... it is a big thing and i still do not realize it happened, would probably need some time to digest everything than happened
am now going to rest a the camp and try to eat and sleep, and get ready for tomorrow and the last stage being 'only' 11km
then back to civilization for real food and shower !!!
we do not notice it here but we must all be stinking !!
thanks again for your messages, am also thinking of all of you very much from here :-)
for those in singapore, get ready to have drinks (and FOOD ;-) ) together !

I re-read your last message and just realized bertille had some dehydration spell the day before. Bertille, hope you are doing fine now. So proud that you made it to the finishing line of the long march. The worst is over. Take your time in your last day and we shall celebrate with you back in Singapore

I know how it feels to receive emails and messages from out there under the hot sun. We are certainly honoured to be part of the invisible force pushing you ahead in the long march :-p. Can totally understand how you feel when you crossed the line. We now look forward to hearing more stories when you are back. Just one thing: however hard the journey has been, trust me, you will long for more. I m sorry to say that you have been officially admitted into the running masochist club hehe.

i take your messages very seriously, matt, you can get the campagne and joseph you can already prepare the raclette, deal !!
by the way, joseph, sabah challenge is absolutly NOTHING compare do what is happening here, see below for yourself
this one was.... really tuff !!!! it was 10km less than yesterday but it took us 3 more hours... 11h for 35k...
temperature went above 50 degrees, it was brutal.
we started with 11km on BIG sand dunes (beautiful scenary again by the way), and until you ve tried it, you don t know how hard it is. the descents are quite fun though, reminds me of skiing in some way.
took 3 hours to do 11km in the sand dunes and we were lucky as it was cloudy and not too hot.
but after than, the sky cleared and it became like an oven. you cannot imagine how hot 50 degrees is, and just add 5 hours of walking in full sun with a bagpack and that's hell... you have no air moving but sometimes, for a few seconds you have a bit of wind and it seems like a giant hairdryer that is put in front of you !!!
you have to drink continuously otherwise you would get dehydrated. unfortunetly this happened to bertille and had to pull her until we found some shade and some people to take care of her. she was shivering of cold and could not stand on her feet anymore :-( quite impressive. i ran as fast as possible to the next checkpoint in that heat (about 5km) and the adrenaline took over so that i could call for a doctor to help her there
then rested for 1h to rehydrated as i felt dizzy after this 30minutes "fast" run and left for the camp, arrived at 7pm (we left at 8am this morning and i only ate some potato chips, 2 cereal bar, and 1 twix...) no need to say that i feel very hungry now ! hunger starts to increase day after day, hopefully some other competitors gave me a few pieces of beef jerky and that tastes so gooood !!!
blisters are coming back almost between each checkpoint and i have to stop regularly to take care of them. i progressively learn how to tolerate pain ! ;-)
as we get to be alone often, you get to think a little bit, and many of my thougts today were for my grandfather, he is in my heart. his picture i am carrying makes me feel i spend some time with him
wherever he is know, he is still smiling in my heart
bertille finally felt much better after drinking a lot and resting and decided to start again to finish today's stage. and she finished it !! have to say that am very impressed... well done... !
the stage today and the camp is below sea level (that s explain the heat...) and most of the long stage tomorrow will take place in that basin
the long stage is about 2 marathons (82km), not really looking forwward to it...
i guess at one point the brain would take over the legs, if this is not already the case...

Congratulations for completing the long stage. You must be euphoric at this point in time.
I recall you telling me your fear of succumbing to a weak mind. In all sense of words, you have proved otherwise now.
Take your time to savour the triumph and remember this feeling of empowerment that you are experiencing right now.
Congratulations to you and Bertille. See you in Singapore soon!

Posted On: 30 Jun 2011 04:59 pm
Posted On: 30 Jun 2011 04:56 pm

You done great Joachim! I apologise for always thinking you'll be a liability to Bertille (I think she's a better caregiver than the other way) but yet you're a hero to her rescue! What a twist in the story. This is the kind of camaraderie you'll experience in a situation like this. Heart-warming & unforgettable. I'm glad you both emerged so strong and survived through so far. You're simply-Champions!!
Posted On: 30 Jun 2011 01:38 pm
It's mind over matter from this point onwards. Stay strong! Don't let the fatigue get to you. Take your time and each step at a time. We are waiting for you to come back to celebrate together. Whatever it is, both Bertille and Joachim are already winners! Bon courage! I hope by time you read this, you are already resting well after the long race.

Hi!
Stage 3 was… great ! and long ! 44km. start in a riverbed canyon, very rocky. 3 rivercrossings. Quite annoying to remove shoes and put them back but better to prevent wet feets and blisters (trish, I know you will not be proud of me for this !! ;-) )
Then 12km of gradual climb, then descent. Scenery was extraordinary !!! extremely beautiful.Stopped at checkpoint 2 (at 22km) to get my blisters fixed.am going well through the slight pain so far JThen went through a very scenic plateau with a 360 view on rocks and mountains.
The last 7km seemed eternity and very hot (between 35 and 40 degrees). We feel we are in a desert now after the rain yesterday ! I wont say enough how beautiful the landscapes are…
Took us 8,5 hours to do the 44km, the terrain is rough.
I started to feel hungry today and looked forward to be at the camp to have food !
Tonight we are sleeping in a village in local people houses, it is lovely ! there is a river so we have been able to have a quick shower (the water is surprisingly extremely cold !!!)
Got my feet taped again, and now going to try and sleep soon but won t be easy as it is hot and the sun is still very bright, it only sets down at 10.30pm !!
Talk to you tomorrow, we wake up at 4am for a 3 hours bus ride to go to the starting line in the turpan basin, below sea level…The first part of the stage tomorrow wil be through sand dunes for about 10km… sounds challenging !

YES! I was just talking to Choon Poh how we missed RTP race seeing that you're having a 'luxurious' race there! Ok, just kidding. We know it's tough-rain, fog, heat, sands, rivers, blisters! By the time you read this, you would have completed the grueling long stage! Well done!! Finishing the long day is as good as race is done. It's been a long week. This stage was supposed to be 41km, but it was so foggy this morning that we could not start (too dangerous to get lost as we could not see the direction flags...). we woke up at 6am but started the race at lunch time when the fog came down. we slept more in the tent which was nice ! the stage was finally 22km, so nothing to complain about. i don t know if we can say we are disapointed it to be this short ! ;-) it is still an half marathon... and it was great to 'recover' from yesterday.
blisters are coming back and increasing, got them treated today at the medical tent, should be fine for tomorrow
scenary was nice, sheeps, river crossing (had shower to freshen up, which is really cool !). water was really cold coming from the high mountains. it was a bit foggy, and we got.... rain !! rain in a desert ??!!!
the sattelite is not working well so i cannot read emails and blogs posts today but i ll catch up tomorrow with these. i hope this post will get updated during the night when the sattelite will work again...
they may or may not catch up the missing distance by adding up some extra kilometers to the other stages but it is not decided yet. we will know tomorrow morning at the breifing ! better not to know before sleep :-)
the camp today is just a bit below 2000m high and we ll be going down tomorrow towards the turpan basin
the stage tomorrow will be most probably be hard, and will definetly be long. at least 44km, more than a marathon...
am tired so going to sleep now, after some chit chatting with the other competitors !
looking forward to reading your messages from today tomorrow when i ll arrive at the camp !! they do really help and keep me warm ! (temperature at camp this night was less than 10 degrees by the way...)
bye bye, talk to you soon again

Hi everyone, thanks a lot for your comments on the blog and for your emails, it is very nice to read them here at the camp ! i cannot send personnal words to all of you but i think of you all very much and your notes give me a lot of help !!
did sleep weel and went out at night, the sky was soooo nice, full of stars !
for my french friends writing in french, do not use the accents as they get blurred completly and it is tuff to read your messages !!!
Stage 1 was 35km with about 1000m cumulative climb and at least 500m cumulative descent. the camp yesterday was at 1200 and the camp today is at 2000m. have a bit of headache, maybe due to the sun and altitude. it was hard to breath, the air seemed scarce actually...
the landscapes are sublime, extraordinary... reminds me a bit of a trek done in ladack (indian himalayas a few years ago). today was not hard, neither very hard. it was extremely hard !!
the terrain is rough (stones, dry riverbeds, steep climbs and descents...). it is about 32 degrees, quite a lot of wind. lips are dry already. we saw some nice big and hairy camels. some mountains with snow at the back of the scenery too.
it is really amazing to be alone (you are most of the time littarely alone) with a wonderful 360degrees view and walk for hours in the immensity of nature. it is a nice place to think and enjoy.
one piece of the race between 2 checkpoints was 9km and it seemd endless... we could see so far away, but no checkpoints !
bertille is doing fine but also blistered (worst than me), it is great to share the race with her. tonight we ll be sharing the extra food taken yesterday so wi ll be full of energy tomorrow and bag will be lighter
all the other competitors and staff are very friendly, made friend with a few of them today.
almost no running today (the terrain is just terrible and i packed a bit more food last minute so the bagpack was a bit too heavy). completed the stage in 8 hours... at least it is done and am in good shape now.
have already a few blisters so tomorrow will be tuff, and probably with a bit of pain too ! tomorrow is also very hilly and will be 41km !
looking forward to reading all your comments and emails tomorrow again... :-)
ps: mpc ;-), c est grace a toi que je suis la !

Allez on est tous avec vous. Plus que 4 etapes. Trop fastoche!
Posted On: 27 Jun 2011 04:21 pm
Hi joachim and bertille, take care of your blisters and don't let them multiply. Enjoy the race and the solitude out there. You have made it to stage 1 and one step closer to completing them! Stay strong and Bon courage!

It sounds slightly more difficult than in Sabah... but I'm sure you are overexagerating! :-)
Don't forget you are invited for a raclette party at my place once you finish.
Jokes aside, wish you the best for the next stage and before the 100km in 1 day. you are doing Great - Impressive job - well-done.
Good luck Mate. Cheers!

bon courage à toi mon fils !

Salut Joachim,
Comment vas tu ?
Posted On: 27 Jun 2011 07:15 am
Hey Jo ! Keep the pace.
Posted On: 27 Jun 2011 06:12 am
salut,

How I almost did not start the race and why the first stage has been a short sprint !!?
Very long trip to Urumqi, 14 hours total… the china southern airline was 5 terrible hours with flies flying around in the plane. 5 hours for a domestic flight ? either the engines are old and not powerful or the country is damn big ! ;-)
2 big things that could have been a disaster, I forgot my passport at the security check in guangzhou. Found out 20 minutes later and went back and found it !Almost same story with sunglasses, I left them somewhere one hour before the bus ride to the camp and I thought I forgot them in a pharmacy in the city so I had to sprint to hope to find them back… I was wrong and sprinted back to the hotel and found them on the chair where I was previously seating, have never had such a high heart beat rhythm in all this training period and it is quite amusing to start an ultra endurance race with a sprint !
finally got there. Sun drops at10pm which seems strange for me after leaving 3 years at the equator. We are all set to go at the first camp with local people playing music ! the locals have kazacks faces and do not seem to be chinese !
final checks up with a bag of 9kg… where do these additional 300g come from ? this will probably remain a mystery…
we (myself and bertille) have been eating all day;-) it is very hot and the scenery is beautiful (mountains with snow, grasslands, rocky hills…)
I have read your emails, thanks for those who sent one, it is nice to read you from here ! send some more again!!
Stay tuned, more to say tomorrow after stage 1…
