Well, the long stage is finally over, and with it, the race is almost done as well. Only a short 8 miler on Saturday to run with the new friends I met this week. The stage was as expected, long and hot. Well, after all it is a desert and we are in the middle of summer....
Lots of sands, lots of dunes, and some dirt roads as well. We went through a lovely town as well and all the people were in the streets chearing us. It was great.
There have been some casualties in the field but in general, everybody is quite strong around here.
Thanks much for your emails this week. Not much of a chance to respond as the key is to try to rest as much as possible, but I will post a blog at www.daddyultraruns.com once I am done so that you can see some nice pictures and a recap of the experience (if you want of course)
Once again, THANKS VERY MUCH!

Stage 3 is done. Today it was the first real run as day one was slightly short, and day 2 had to be shortened due to fog in the mountains, making running quite dangerous.
We started the day in the mountains with a couple of river crossings, and then climbed our way out through a canyon to get the first taste of desert. Just a reminder of what is to come tomorrow.
All is going well and the spirits are high. Proud to say I have met the guy who is going 2nd, a Spaniard called Jauma! I have asked for an autograph. I have found my running group with two other Spanish, Julio and Ramon, and we are having a great time running together. We are all in good shape so hopefully we can keep it up.
Tonight we are sleeping in a village and tomorrow we have a desert stage. Food is running low so if you can email me a steak with french fries and a cold beer, I would appreciate that!
Thanks to all for your emails as they are very nice to read after a long day of running.
If my brother Pablo happens to read this, I am sorry that he now has to go to the Stadium on Saturdays.......
Thanks much everybody!

As we start our road towards the Atacama Desert Race starting next March, each one of us (Julie, Stephen and Hernan) is preparing in our own ways to get there in the best possible shape! It is important during the next couple of months not only to work on our conditioning individually and as a team, but most importantly, to gain experience and trust in our selves. As part of this road, we all signed up for some events this past weekend which we hope will contribute towards making us a stronger team!
Stephen and Julie took part of the Florida Sunshine Adventure Race put together by Pangea Adventure Racing. This is the first time such event is put together and it had its participants struggle through a number of "missions" during a 30 hour period! This was a huge goal for Stephen and Julie as their previous experience only had them competing for 5 hours..... In any case, they did a fantastic job in making it to the start line and staying strong through 15 solid hours of hard work!!! Well done guys! You can read more about it by following Julie's Blog.
On the other hand, I decided to stick to just running... I took part of the Wickham 50 Marathon organized by Matt Mahoney in Wickham Park. This is a fantastic event that Matt puts together every year and it challenges runners to go around a 3.75 mile loop inside Wickham Park for..... many laps! If you finish 50 miles on day 1, then you are cordially invited to do the same on day 2. Furthermore, if you finish 50 miles on day 2, then you get an invitation to do the same on day 3 AND once again, if successful on day 3, YOU CAN DO IT ALL OVER AGAIN ON DAY 4, FOR A TOTAL OF 200 MILES! Well, I only signed up for 50 miles.... There are some nice pictures of the event in Steve Collela's Web Page or on Matt Mahoney's Facebook.
We will continue our training in the weeks to come. Julie will run her first Marathon coming up in early July (we will improvise a course along the River Road for her to accomplish this!) and I will head over to the Gobi Desert the third week of June to attempt to finish an adventure race there (Gobi March).
Thanks for your continued support and please, if you can, we appreciate any donations you can make on behalf of the Families Exploring Down Syndrome of Brevard!!!
