Gobi March (2010) blog posts from Wallace Gowin

Wow, my first ever blog..for any site. I only decided last week to enter the Gobi March 2010, and am now an official competitor. Only around 6 months or so to get ready for this event, but I think I have a heads start on the training. I usually jog here in Kuwait and the temperatures get over 50 in the hot months, and down to 0 at night during the cold months. Almost the same as the Gobi, so that helps me as I am adjusted to the temps we will endure. I also job at home in Bangkok when I am there on vacations every 3 months, and the high tempertures and humidity takes its toll for sure.

My main goal is to raise money for a worthwhile charity in Thailand. I am waiting for an official confirmation to be their representative, and should have that soon. Then I will announce that on one of my blogs.

My second goal is to complete the march in the authorized time period. I am too old to try and hurt myself in trying to run the entire course, so will settle for fast walking and jogs when the terrain is suitable. I do not want any injuries to prevent me from completing and not getting the charity contributions. Completion and not a podium finish is my goal. Besides, I have never been a speed racer, even in my younger days. Six or so minute miles in combat boots and fatigues for 5 miles is the best I used to do. Those days and gone.....

I have found and read many of the blogs from the various competitiors and Gobi marches. These will be very helpful in planning this competition. I also hope to be able to offer some insights as I go about the training and selection of my gear, food, etc.

I look forward to meeting all my fellow competitiors in June. See you then.

Good luck to you Mr. Gowin! I have an acquaintance who completed the Sahara Race this year and intends on entering the Gobi in 2010.
