Gobi March (2010) blog posts from Kristian James Henry

23 March 2010 03:40 am (GMT) Greenwich Mean Time: Dublin, Edinburgh, Lisbon, London

Been busy the last few weeks doing races,  I finished the Grantham Ultra doing both days in 4 hours 50,  it was my first back to back long run and was happy with being able to pace each day evenly, also I ran with my pack for the first time and found it O.K.,  The following weekend I ran in the first Kilamathon England in Nottingham which was a 26.2 k (16.3 miles) race to Derby, I didn’t think I would break the 2 hour mark but got a 1hour 58. Which I was really happy with.

Last weekend I ran in the Reading Half a race I did in 2008 and just got under 2 hours, this year I was trying to get close to 1hour 30 and got a 1:33 which I was a bit upset about at the time but now think it is not a bad effort,

Now though I think it’s time to get the Pack on and get as many miles in as I can until I leave in only 11 weeks,

Got the Edinbrough Half in April and will have 1 more try at the 1:30 then!!!!

Well the London 50k is done and was fairly close to my time doing it 4:34mins so was happy overall, I also learnt that going out and running the first 10k in 48mins was not such a great idea! I must learn to slow down a bit as the last 10k was very hard!! I will be looking at getting my Desert Pack bought soon and was wondering where the best place was to get them! Shops, or online? I now know that i will not be running the whole time and would like some idea of some run walk stuff! I will be in Bristol for the 6 weeks if any one knows any good runs near by or would fancy a run in the week!!

Good time in the London Ultra! Try the packs for size in the shops and then buy from either RTP store or www.likeys.com

Great time for the 50k - did you still have plenty left in the tank? For the pack, I would suggest trying them for size in shops, just to be sure it fits your frame - and also try it with some weight in! You can then always look on the web for special offers! I'll be walking more than running, as I find it tough running with a full pack, but will 'trot' down any of the downhills. I also find poles indispensable on the dunes to give leverage in the soft sand. Good luck with Grantham...go long and slow!

04 February 2010 11:25 am (GMT) Greenwich Mean Time: Dublin, Edinburgh, Lisbon, London

It is about a week before I do the London 50k on the 13th Feb my first ever so called ultra Marathon! I am really happy with my training so far and have been getting out about 4 to 5 times a week! All my P.B.s have been coming down got the 5k under 20 mins for the first time yesterday which was cool, Done the 1/2 in 1:38 down from 1:55 and last Sunday ran my second full Marathon as a training run in 3:47! So I have set a target time of 4:30 for the 50k!! However I still have no idea how you can run so far for so many days in the heat!! So in a bit of a panic last night I booked on the ULTRArace Grantham - 29.3 on the Saturday and then the same run back the way on the Sunday!! Its on 6/7th March in 4 weeks time if any one thinks this sounds "good"

Today was my first competitive race since entering the Gobi it was an 8 mile off road event in Aldershot called the grim challenge!  It was an event I took part in with Cindy in 2007 and was lots of fun,  the race had water crossings, cargo nets and rough terrain, in 2007 I finished the event in 1:31 and was totally knackered,  However today after getting 2 hours sleep in my car before the race I smashed 22 mins off finishing in 1:09,  in 228th position out of a field of 2500 and feeling great, It is the first time I have ever finished any event anywhere other than mid position!!  I am planning on getting out tomorrow and seeing how far and fast my legs can carry me, seeing this sort of improvement is very motivating, only thing 8 miles sounds like such a short distance nowadays!!!!!!!!

Ran a hard 20 miles on Sunday in the rain up and down the Lancashire Hills, and strangely I ran my fastest ever 5 K today on the tread mill today, must be doing something right, only problem is it was about 12 degrees but we can’t all live in the Sun!!

My training started properly 3 weeks ago and has been going well so far, I have decided to work on getting a bit quicker over the Marathon distance till Xmas by running a ½ each Wednesday, some shorter runs  in the week and a longer run at the weekend!!! Then starting with the pack training in the New Year and taking part in the London 50k in Feb!!  As I have no real idea what I am doing I guess running lots will be my aim for now!!!!

Hi there. I have just signed up for Gobi but never even run a marathon. Your training ideas look along the lines of what i might try, albeit you are a little ahead of me. Just wondered where you heard about the London 50k and how you entered, if there's a good site worth signing up to etc. Am London based so might make sense for me to give it a go. Cheers Nick

Hi Kristian, sounds like you are doing great. I have just come back from Sahara, my first race, did most of it bar 6 miles, bit gutting really but that 6 miles would have meant another very long day and prob put me out for the rest of the race. I'm no expert but what I would say is what you are doing sounds good. Try and do at least one or two very very long runs/walks 40-50 miles just to see what happens to your body and what works for you. I found that I needed far more snacks along the way than big meals. Snacks really were essential as energy levels can get so low. The heat is massive and will be in Gobi too. Really I just went from checkpoint to checkpoint, 6 miles and tried to cool off sufficiently. Another note is really dont take a big pack, the lighter the better, mine was 9kg and that was as much as you want to take. The lightweight stuff is expensive but worth it. See you in Gobi, happy to provide anymore tips if you need it! best wishes Anita
