What an absolutely incredible day. I think that is the most beautiful 30km course I have ever seen. Rolling hills, trees, farm animals, gers, blue skies

Well done Stephen, all over bar the shouting. A great effort which is reward for the unseen hours of training "putting the miles into the legs". Enjoy the post race shandy, just the one mind you!, and we will hear from you later All the best mate David

Haha. When I saw the rafts, I *knew* you wouldn’t be able to resist the chance at having a paddle. Now the experience is truly complete!

0-0 at halftime. Tight, nervy. 7 minutes into second half Katic repays transfer fee. Hibs held on against 10 Greeks. Sheep went one down at Burnley, came back and equalised for 1-1 at halftime. Sheep better team first half but under pressure as I type. We are relaxed now, picking them off on break. Bad news is they scored 89th minute. First goal lost in 7 games. But it wasn't enough. We are through. Hibs are through. Sheep into extra time, but lose 3-1. To go against the 6th best team in the EPL and draw over 180 minutes is pretty damn good though

This is unbelievable. You continue to impress and inspire. We are all so glad you’re safe and dry at long last! Been waiting for this post and to hear that you’ve made it through the tough part. I can only imagine how good that first beer is gonna taste at the Finish!

Well done Stephen!! Congratulations :-) That is not the end, but it is the beginning of the end, to paraphrase Churchill. What you have left to go might kill most people, but you guys are not most people. The remaining miles may be hard, but you will chew them up and make it. Fantastic job. Took almost three hours out of last years long stage,(19h, 19m) were they the same distance? All the best to you and all the others. Will have a football score for you in about 6 hours, so about 4.30am your time. Keep going and great job so far. Have you checked Rob is not a robot, 70km on one leg and an injured IT band? See if there is a tag or something similar in back of neck you can open:-). You can power him down for repair

A long, slow day today. 49.6km with 1,000m of elevation made for a long day in saddle of almost 10 hours. I slept much better last night so rose about 6 to a beautiful clear morning. We headed off under cloudy skies, which stayed most of the day. Perfect hiking weather really. There was one really big steep hill at the end of stage 1, but the feeling at the top, standing in the wind, was marvellous, if a bit cold. We headed off and made good time, again doing 12 minutes kms throughout the day.

We had a group of three, which meant plenty of chat about various topics. One of the joys is meeting new people, sharing stories, finding out about each other

Steve, well done on day 2 completed. Yet another UK Sky victory in Tour de France, this time Geraint Thomas of Wales with Froome third. Crusaders beat Hurricanes and will face Lions who beat Waratahs in the final. Adil Rashid us England's only spinner for first test. Which is England's 1000th test. Cool history. Rangers play Thursday and I will update you. We have bid for Lafferty, £200k. Hearts "angry", as are many Rangers fans me included. He's a TB. Good luck for tomorrow

An amazing first day of the race. a 39.6km stage completed in 7:50. We woke early at about 5.20am and had breakfast with lots of chat. I had a terrible night

Sounds like an amazing experience, Steve; but clearly not a stroll in the park :) we're all eagerly tracking your progress back here in the office and wishing you all the best. Love the photo by the way, you look like an extra from Star Wars. May the force be with you, mate.

Congrats on finishing Day 1! Within a day or two your body will remember what this is all about and it becomes a machine just doing what you tell it to. Keep on enjoying and living the experience! Marisa

Hello Stephen, Carmen here, volunteer from Namibia. Thank you for your blog! It is great to follow from afar and I am considering entering one of these bad babies...so your honest report is great! You transport me to the steppes and prairies of Mongolia. Way to go today and wonderful to see you planning to keep it cool and race within yourself! Keep strong and the blogs coming! Best wishes and have fun!!!! Carmen

28 July 2018 10:32 am (GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi

So, here we are. It's Saturday morning in Ulaanbatar. I arrived on Thursday morning after a flight via Beijing. Immediately I was struck by the green rolling hills of Mongolia (I'm sure they won't feel so rolling when we have to climb them!). Then I was struck (literally) by an old friend jumping at me giving me a big hug....and its been hugs for two days. One of the absolute joys of 4Deserts is the camaraderie and friendship. For two days I have been chatting, laughing, hanging out, drinking and eating with both old and new friends. It has been wonderful. We all share the same stupid passion for this sport and this challenge - good to know I'm not the only nutter out there.

Ulaanbater is not the greatest city in the world, but interesting. I've visited the last King's palace, a couple of interesting temples and a huge, communist era style square in front of the Houses of Parliament. Mongolians are a very friendly and welcoming people.

Today is registration, kit check, final preparation and then the bus leaves at 2pm. We head to Camp 1 and the beginning of this experience.

My next post will be from the Gobi Desert itself. I have wanted to go there since I was a kid

We left Ulaanbaatar under a rain cloud at 2pm today for a 5 hour bus ride through the Mongolian countryside. The scenery was just incredible

How exciting! I wish there were a way for you to share pics, but I know there will be plenty of those at race’s end. Can’t wait to hear more! So glad you are making new friends and strengthening bonds with olds friends. That’s what it’s all about.

25 July 2018 08:07 am (GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi

It is 8 hours until I get onboard the plane and head to Mongolia. 6 months of training. Almost 2,000km on my feet since New Year. I am both petrified and excited in equal measures......

This is really different from last year in Namibia. Then, it was all new. First desert. First multi stage race. A journey into the unknown. This time, I'm supposed to know what I'm doing - even if I don't :-)

Looking forward to seeing friends again and experiencing this amazing race. More blogs to come when I get there.

Thanks for the great words of support

Steve
