A 56-year-old Philadelphia man died Saturday after hiking with his family on the New Jersey side of the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area.
The man, identified as Todd R. Boschetto, had been hiking on the blue-blazed trail of the Dunnfield Creek area off Interstate 80 when he collapsed Saturday afternoon.
He later died at the scene after bystanders along with first responders from the National Park Service and from New Jersey's Forest Fire Service, Park Police, and Search and Rescue, as well as the Blairstown Ambulance Corps, were unable to revive him.
The man's death came as the search for a missing 39-year-old man last seen Friday afternoon, when a rented canoe carrying him and a female companion capsized on the Delaware River, continued without success.
Search-and-rescue crews spent all day Saturday scouring the Delaware River downstream from the Interstate 80 bridge but were forced to call off the search as dusk fell. The search is expected to resume this morning.
Kathleen Sandt, a spokesperson for the National Park Service, said Saturday that authorities have confirmed the identity of the missing man, who hails from the Laurence Harbor section of Old Bridge Township, but will not release his name until his next of kin are notified.
Although the man has yet to be found, the woman who with him at the time -- whose name also has not been released -- was rescued shortly after Friday's boating accident by park visitors who were in a canoe nearby. She was immediately taken to a nearby access location at Kittatinny Point in Hardwick, and was transported by ambulance to an unidentified area hospital.
Sandt said the canoe they were in overturned near the site of the river's historic Karamac Bridge abutments, which are the remains of a late-1800s bridge that was removed in the 1940s. Sandt said it is not known what caused the canoe to capsize.
However, neither victim was wearing a life jacket, according to the National Park Service.
The NPS recommends that only experienced paddlers attempt to kayak or canoe on the river at this time due to high river levels and water temperatures in the low 60s, which are still cold enough to pose a risk of hypothermia.
Sandt said park regulations require anyone 12 years old or under to wear a life jacket at all times. Those over 12 years old, while not required to have a life jacket on, must have one in the boat with them readily available at all times.
Life jackets are also mandatory for all boaters when the river is at 8 feet or higher.
