02 August 2019 10:00 pm (GMT+08:00) Irkutsk, Ulaan Bataar

I finally made it! Today was such a perfect day.  My tent mate traded some coffee for a chocolate pudding (anything besides those eggs) and we were off. I went determined to run even a little bit. I put in my music and hit the course. Even though it was skipping back and forth between songs I caught the beat and carried on.  I figured I would only get a few miles in – but I managed to run a lot today.  Which was all I had wanted to do for days.  Just one respectable run without my knee blowing up. It was a beautiful course through some valleys – an uphill bit through a forest (lots of wild lavender here) and lots of cute cows and goats on the last bit.  I passed by several kids who high fived me and lifted the spirits.  There were quite a few river crossings (some knee and higher with a decent current) and even they felt great on the legs.

When we got to the downhill part I was worried but I was determined and I even managed to run the downhills.  I ran into two of the lovely Americans (Kim and Jerry) on the downhill which seriously lifted my spirited.  I love these types of events – I honestly think they make you a better, more caring person. It’s really special to see how much everyone bonds and just wishes the best for each other.  I know I will miss it.

The camp is fantastic –it is on another river. We have all been bathing in the river – this one has a slight currant so it was even fun to get into it and let it shoot you down to another little embankment.  I will miss this place – but it is nice to know that only a 10 K is left and that I will finish this thing! Much love to you all – I look forward to a lovely egg brekky with you Tony! It’s going to be a tough job to get me back onto them again. And Martha – you are absolutely right.  The meaning of life is definitely not FOMO.  I cannot pretend to begin to know what it really is but I imagine it’s about enjoying where you are and finding those folks that make you feel loved always.  Then FOMO couldn’t be an issue. I am thankful for you all and I am so blessed as you say Siobhan to be able to share so many miles with such dear friends.

Tomorrow I am going to wake up, have a coffee, eat a stroopwafel (this is all I have that I think I might like to eat) and finish this thing!

Cannot wait to see you all on the other side!

AMAZING!!! 250km done, and to finish off with a super-fast final 10km, what a way to complete your mission! Having done two 100km’s with you, and sharing the trials and tribulations with you on those occasions, I had every confidence that you’d get this thing done too. To even get to the start line each day to run a back-to-back marathons (plus some!) is truly inspiring, and then to complete each stage with really solid efforts, wow! Incredible. Minner, Mia, and I send you our love and can’t wait to see you and hear about your crazy adventure. #knewyoucoulddowitt!

I could not be happier for you, Sarah - I can just hear the pure joy in your words!! I know you will enjoy every last minute. Looking forward to hearing even more about your adventures once you are back. And +1 to Martha’s comment on the coffee-pudding swap; sometimes it is those small victories along the way that add even that much more to such an amazing accomplishment. 😁 You are a rock star!!!! 😎🏆

01 August 2019 02:30 pm (GMT+08:00) Irkutsk, Ulaan Bataar

Long March done and dusted. If I were to write a book about this experience it would have to be titled how I managed to drag my right leg all the way through Mongolia. . I had some dark moments yesterday thinking back on all of the missed brunches, the times I said I had to go home early, how isolating that felt at times, and then thought about the fact that my knee basically blew out at mile 13.  That felt hard when I was really low and I wondered why I even bothered especially at the cost of time with friends.  But honestly any experience with these things is possible. And most are exactly what you need whether it feels it at the moment or not. They break you down but you realize what is important, you learn to let go of things a little quicker,  and worst case scenario is always at a minimum an incredible amount of fun. Just keep moving! If I could type more on this silly keyboard – I would want you all to know how much you mean.  To read these messages after a long week makes me feel so fortunate and loved. I cried a fair bit reading them. But most people actually tear up a bit at the cyber tent.

I know that all I really needed was something to get me to run again. So check there regardless of anything else. It is the most meditative thing that I do and I know that over the last year I feel so much more sorted in life in general – balanced and where I should be.

In terms of yesterday – I knew it was going to be tough. But I went out determined to move as fast as I could - managed to run a little bit and pull my leg along a bit faster.  The pain killers were rocking my stomach  and I have a hard time eating these dehydrated eggs (that inevitably become soup) and felt ill everytime I think of them. Today I have 1500  calories of them to deal with since I kept switching them out for other food from later days. But I went out determined to move it as fast I could. It was so insanely hot. At one of the check points they gave us a can of coke. I couldn’t have imagined anything better (although now I have a taste for it and cannot stop thinking of them). You appreciate the little things more.

Today is an off day. Much needed – when we got in I laid down and it felt like all my muscles were in spasms.  We have all been wading in the nearby creek, washing our clothes in it, and trading food and chatting.  Its so warm – in my mind this place is as beautiful as any beach I have ever been to. I even found a few slugs on my feet after soaking and my mind couldn’t be shifted – this place is the perfect place to be now. One more marathon tomorrow then less than a 10k to go!

Damn, girl! You are fierce! You got the big bad outta the way. Now you get to take pride in this incredible accomplishment and enjoy the ease of a couple of short hops -- nothing you haven't done before, but this time with awe-inspiring scenery the rest of us can only imagine. Enjoy yourself! I'm so excited for you.

Your post up is beautiful, and truly an enlightened and contemplative reflection on the life of an endurance athlete. You give up so much on one end - missed/shortened/sober brunches and early nights with the dichotomous panging guilt of not being out training and frustration at leaving the fun again - but you also get so much out of it too. The meditation and chance to reflect and contemplate life's biggest questions. The pain and effort of running has a way of stripping out everything else and makes you focus and problem solve like nothing else can. It also provides you a chance to have unparalleled therapy sessions with the best of friends while pounding out the miles. I count myself so fortunate to have some of my best friends also being my best running partners. Congratulations on being over the hump! Enjoy the rest of this incredible experience and the relief that will come when it is over. I can't wait to celebrate with you and will definitely be inviting myself to visit you soon and we will make up for lost boozy brunches! But let's be honest, we'll also work in a run or two too. Life is all about balance!

I typed a comment and thought it was submitted but do not see it here. So I hope it does not duplicate. My heart is so full it does not know how to speak. Even though you have wrapped your umbilical cord around this earth multiple times, it is still attached to my heart. I feel every pain you experience. Still my heart swells with pride and admiration of your accomplishment. You have physical strength and strength of character. You mean so much to so many of us. And we are thrilled when life is able to return to you a joy of living. Stay safe, stay strong and you will finish this amazing adventure too. All the love in this big world is coming to you from those of us at your first home.

Well done, well done. Not long to a proper soak in that lovely bath tub at the Blue Sky hotel. Tip of the day..get into the bath ahead of your roomie! Second tip: a lot less water into the orange bags and add lots of salt, it could be quite yummy! Enjoy the last day, it's a beaty. You've got this in the bag, even if you have to limp across the finish.

Dehydrated eggs that turned to soup... I can't. Just imagine how you will appreciate real eggs when you return. They will be magical. On your next visit to SF, I'm gonna make you a classic Italian frittata. Until then, know we are with you (the slugs too) and take care of that knee. 🤗

I’m pretty sure you are out there finding the meaning of life and purpose of all things. Watch out those slugs aren’t actually leaches 😳😳😳 so proud of you!!! You’re so close to real food, not dehydrated eggs (what the???? How the????) and friends are always doing stuff, there’s no missing out...pretty sure Fomo is not included in the meaning of life...but I’ll plan a brunch so you can tell us all about the real meaning of life ;) love you dear even if you come back with only one leg 🦵

30 July 2019 09:00 pm (GMT+08:00) Irkutsk, Ulaan Bataar

Hi all!

Your words mean everything! I didn’t write yesterday because I was shattered. I woke up and assumed my phone was dead and thus no music. I listen to music a good 75% of the day so it all seemed impossible.  We had an epic storm the night before stage 2 so it was difficult to sleep (yes I actually have to sleep when I run this much) My knee was such a mess and I just was in a low place. Thankfully my tentmate, Chris, and Ulaanbaatar roommate, Jennyfer, stopped to help this silly crying fool laugh heaps on a downhill.  Im gonna finish this thing and spend all my money so I cannot sign up again was the mantra. I couldn’t run at all yesterday – which meant that stupid bag was on my shoulders longer.  But we made it.

We stayed in a yurt last night instead of a tent which was awesome minus a little mouse that had me worried about my snacks. Also the wolves/scary dogs were a nice touch.  Today I woke up more determined but still in pain. We started with a massive scramble straight up a rock – downhill still hurt and 6 miles of dunes. I turned on my music on blasted through.  Feeling more determined – learning to walk on this stupid knee and walk faster.  Its so amazing here – I am happy and glad I came. Onward to the 47 mile day tomorrow. I am feeling more myself and ready for this thing!  Thank you all – you are all my heart! You make everything possible and I think of everyone often!

Pain is temporary.. glory is forever! I know you can and i know you will, you've accomplished more One checkpoint at a time, before you know it (after a little bit more pain!) Youre at the finish By the time you read this, you would have finished the long march. Most orange bags would have been consumed and that mouse can be fed majority of your remaining snacks since you'll be almost done Getting closer and closer to that hot shower, sleep on a bed and real food Great job

"A little railroad engine was employed about a station yard for such work as it was built for, pulling a few cars on and off the switches. One morning it was waiting for the next call when a long train of freight-cars asked a large engine in the roundhouse to take it over the hill. "I can't; that is too much a pull for me", said the great engine built for hard work. Then the train asked another engine, and another, only to hear excuses and be refused. In desperation, the train asked the little switch engine to draw it up the grade and down on the other side. "I think I can", puffed the little locomotive, and put itself in front of the great heavy train. As it went on the little engine kept bravely puffing faster and faster, "I think I can, I think I can, I think I can." As it neared the top of the grade, which had so discouraged the larger engines, it went more slowly. However, it still kept saying, "I—think—I—can, I—think—I—can." It reached the top by drawing on bravery and then went on down the grade, congratulating itself by saying, "I thought I could, I thought I could." -The Little Engine That Could You're an inspiration. Stay safe and stay determined :)

Your matra "I think I can, I think I can, I will." I am so grateful for your helpful teammates. I hope you can feel the positive energy we are all sending your way. Wolves and scary dogs may be a bit more worrisome than coyotes. :) Onward and upward and I know you will conquer this march.

28 July 2019 08:00 pm (GMT+08:00) Irkutsk, Ulaan Bataar

Just a short one to let you know that I made it! And I had no Diet Coke!!!!! I find it hard to type on this (missing the mechanical keyboard so much) so it will likely be very stream of conscious.

Its incredible here and it feels so good to be back to running – albeit slower and with more aches!  My knee got me again downhill.  I will try not to steal anything from a mountain shop Martha because I certainly won’t get away.

And my bag came apart twice while running. A packing expert I am not! I tried a whole bunch of new things today and tonight will feast like a king so that sleeping bag fits in the bag and cannot fly off in the wind again.

I packed way too much food – I may even have too much coffee! The tent mates are heaps of fun.  Everyone is so lovely. I am so happy.  This is almost as good as Thanksgiving!

Thank you so much for the love – you mean so much to me! Cannot wait to share, photos, and real food soon! Wish you all were here… its all so awesome. London folks hug tilly for me!
