Gobi March (2008) blog posts from Kenneth Reid

04 June 2008 02:46 am (GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi

All set and ready to go. I think! Packed my bag last night for the first time with a lot of help from my wife and managed to get everything into my Raidlight.

Just like to thank all of those who have supported me in recent months trekking over the hills of Hong Kong. I am sure Gail is looking forward to seeing me again at weekends.

My main concern is my food and poles come off the plane in Kashi!

Donations to Heep Hong Society have gone very well and I would like to thank all of you who have made a contribution to this great charity who do so much for the needy children of Hong Kong.

Ken.

Dad, hope all is well....I am sitting at my desk at F+P day dreaming about what exactly you will be doing now (I guess you are not skipping along enjoying the view!!!!!!!).....as tough as it may seem right now you will think back in weeks, months and mainly years to come and think it was one of the most; if not most amazing experience of your life. I hope and have every confidence that you are doing so well and keeping your moral high as well as everybody else’s. Mum is having problems with her computer, she told me to tell you that after Sate 5 (??) the finishing line is in sight. Love you so much and can’t wait to hear your voice. I especially can’t wait to hear about your amazing adventure………I am sure we will be hearing about it for along time to come ;) Love you xxxxxxxxx

Good going so far Ken. One more big effort in the long march tomorrow and then you are almost finished.

Posted On: 11 Jun 2008 09:22 am

Have been trying for ages to get a line out on the computer. Just a quick note to wish you the best of luck for tomorrow....The Big One. Know you can do it. Read that you said someone shoud have their head examined if they thought stage 3 was moderate to difficult. Still you managed to get through it, with a good time. Hopefully you'll be able to get a good nights rest before tomorrows leg. The Finish Line is almost in sight! Love, Gail x

Saw your funny comment on the Stage 3 updates! If you can still make jokes like that then it means you are still sharp and ready for the big Finish Line. Seen lots of pictures of you. Come on Ken! Keep going!

Are you checking your emails? Janette from school has emailed you a couple of times. Congrats on stage 3. You seem to be keeping up a steady pace. I'll have a look on the web to see if I can see any pics of you on stage 3. Just got in from school... I would say I'm exhausted but you probably know the real meaning of that more than I do! Looking forward to hearing all about it when you get home . Miss you more than you know. Gailx

Well done Ken, very steady, keep going. By the time you read this you will be well over half way to the finish. Keep smiling and enjoy it, we are following every move. AB

A connection!!!! Saw a pic of you and Peter kinda laughing - so you must be finding the going not too bad. The scenery looks amazing from the pictures so ,for you, it must be fantastic. Looking forward to finding out your time for today's leg. By the way, neither of you looked too bad considering you haven't washed or shaved for a few days. Love always, Gail x

Having problems with the computer again hopefully it will be repaired tomorrow. Saw some great pics of you walking stage 2 , you were even smiling. So things must be going ok. Hoping to find out where you came in before going to bed, but the results aren't up yet. Miss you. Gail x

Wow, dad, can’t believe that you are already trekking the Gobi. I just wanted to say how unbelievably proud I am to have you as a dad. You are doing such a wonderful thing for a great charity. After all the trekking round London town we did to find the perfect pair of trainers, poles, thermal blankets…………and it was a lot of “trekking”, I hope the blisters are holding up and you are cosy at night!! I love you loads and loads and when you are finding it tough just think of how much mum and I love you and what a wonderful thing you are doing. Big Kiss and sleep tight. Gills xxxxxxxxxx

Hi Ken, Hope all's going well? Beware of camels.... An Englishman, a Scotsman, and an Irishman are wandering through the desert, hungry and hallucinating, when they come upon a rotting, dead camel. "Well," said the Englishman, "I support the Liverpool football club, so I'll eat the liver." "I support the Hearts club," said the Scotsman, "so I'll eat the heart." "I support Arsenal," said the Irishman, "but I seem to have lost my appetite." But Ken, from what we hear, your cuisine will be outstanding!! Wishing you well and look forward to hearing all about your adventures, K & S x

if I were you ken I would avoid Michael and Peter - they got lost in Beijing airport when they landed! Enjoy the experience and come back to tell us the tale of the great Gobi Trek. We are all cheering you and the HKG contingency on!
