Gobi March (2015) blog posts from Adrienne Garrard

Nearly halfway through this thing. Today comedy ghastly. Very rough terrain. Up and down boulders non stop. As soon as the words came out of my mouth yesterday 'at least we're in a snow storm, not RAIN'...OBV the heavens opened and it HOONED down. That plus the gale force winds, made it A Most Unpleasant Day. CP3 people were there to give us cups of warm water and a lot of us were in really bad shape. One guy came into camp with his emergency bivy bag wrapped around him like a sari...Given that our prep talk today was all about hydrationand most peeps went out DRESSED FOR A HOT DESERT, I packed badly and had all myst weather gear somewhere in the middle of my rucksack. Sod's law. RTP staff/volunteers being amazing. 42km today and it was the hardest thing so far. Got into camp freezing and soaked to the bone, but have semi dried clothes by the fire, had my blisters tended to by lovely Dr Sir Lancealot. Everytime I get to the med tent I seem to be mid wave of my daily nausea attack post food intake. So we're a fine pair, Sir L and me, Mistress Yackalot. Andy W, you'll be thrilled to hear I've just had my first good drilling of the toenail variety. Mmmmm never thought it would feel so good to have a large needle drilled into my big toe - but Sir L has a fabulous tentside manner.

Everything aches, it's stupidtard freezing, and I'm about to crawl into a sleeping bag atop the worst mattress ever. Think it's meant for people who really care about speed. Its like a small lily pad, without the pad bit.

Another 42km tomorrow. Everything insane painful. Spirits high. Not sure why. Pray for my soles...

Adi & Jake - well done. You're well positioned about 3/4 down the list. We're very impressed. Scenery does though look more like Scotland (with camels & chinamen) with pasture, houses, mountains and paved roads. Where's the sand? And the heat? Anyway well done so far and we hope you get to the end with the goal achieved. Love Derek & Barbara

Am looking forward to drinking with you when back, and I'll bet you look fantastic, even if you smell and have baboon butt

Sorry kids and rentals - Day 1 was a bit of a killer, so only just stumbled to a tooter.

The night before the race was one of those experiences that leave an indelible imprint on your memory. The camp was in a very remote area 2 hours outside of Hami, surrounded by mountains, sun shining. As we walked in, the local villagers had gathered to cheer us in. I felt (alas did not look) like an Olympian. An 8 man tent - VVVVV cold and a bit overwhelming. The other tenties very nice chaps, but looked worryingly fit. Hardly got any sleep - nerves, but also FREEZING cold. Didn't feel much like a desert...Morning panic OBV. Futile efforts at organization yielded a zillion ziplock bags, all filled with indistinguishable things. Morning came at 3.30am for me. Didn't stop a last minute scramble for the start line.

The Speedos took off. Stage 1 very technical, through a deep ravine. We took it slowly, partly out of choice, partly because we got stuck behind some contestants intent on cataloging their race photographically in front of Every Rock. End of stage 1 we were grateful. A couple of the fasties had slipped and fallen and done some serious damage. As we approached the start of S2, the weather took a turn and we found ourselves on a sand dune in a snow blizzard. The contestants ahead of us had been in a total white out. Terrifying, apparently. Not just because they couldn't see where they were going, but because they didn't have time to get warm kit on. I didn

You two are simply epic!! Keep fighting the good fight and keep coming with the amazing updates when you can. Also, the consensus for your sanity appears to be "wet-wipes" so may your supply be bountiful!! Xxx

Dearest A & J; An inspiration perhaps from my 50's High School Yearbook graduation blurb - "The impossible is only the untried". Well, it seems you two are giving the impossible one heck of a good try! We're proud of you for doing so, and in such impressive style and high spirits. Great going. Keep at it, luvs. Daddy & Flissy

A phenomenal performance by JAdie (A, 9hrs23minutes and J, v gentlemanly seconds behind. Amazing, amazing!!!) in Stages 2 (aka "in the footsteps of Genghis Khan) despite the steep rise to the highest peak and the freakish snow) Nicely done Genghis JAde, go tame that desert!

We decided we'd drop in on your orphans a little later. Hoping day-1 was event free, in a good way, for you both. However, don't believe we're aware of many days of either of your lives that could properly described as event free? Chances of a day in a desert deep in Uighur-Land being one of them probably slim to none? Don't worry about posting just concentrate on changing those socks and properly hydrating that chicken tikka masala. Why, oh why, oh why, oh why....? Sure you'll have a good answer in six days. Meantime, team Scrivens 万吗奔腾!!! [Ten thousand horses surging forward or better perhaps Go For It!]

Daddy here. Can scarcely believe you're at last under way! With everything save the kitchen sink (and a sufficient supply of knickers!) on your poor old back, and a super abundance of high spirits and gumption, to say nothing of energy and stamina, to carry you through to success... as you did in such fine style in the Big Apple. How I wish I could be there this time too...to welcome you across the finish line with a big hug. Afraid it'll have to be virtual, but no less sincere for that! Wicked step-mother joins me in sending tons of encouragement and of course heaps of love. We're willing you success and great memories to savour for a lifetime. Go for it, Number 1 Dotter! Love you, Big Daddy

Hey mam and dad, Sounds very funny and I hope you get there safely. My phone has now completely died and so communication is left to email and this, so try your best to keep us updated but don't if your to tired. Dad will be happy to know Arsenal won the FA Cup with a 4-0 thrashing of Aston Villa. Loads and loads of good luck and I actually take comfort in the fact that your are holding the rear of the race before it has even begun ;)

RTP will hopefully feel like a breeze in the park compared to 2 days of traveling to start - thought gobi was much easier to get to than, Atacamma? Hope you have figured out a quicker route home or you'll be in tears. Good luck and hope you Enjoy the experience. Xxxx
