Pain is evitable, suffering is optional. This was the mantra that got me through the long stage. Started the day off easy and I am glad I did as temperatures soared to around 45 degrees Celsius. After checking on a heat rash / reaction and a nose bleed (due to the dry conditions) at checkpoint 5 (50km into the day), I was feeling a little battered and tired and then had a bit of a situation with a fly that wouldn

Stage 4 now completed. Easier day for 42km and proper desert conditions.. hot! First half of the day, lots of downhill action so took advantage of that and changed from the standard 'ultra shuffle'to actual running. Second half of the day was when it started to heat up and I was still wearing long sleeves so was nice and toasty when I finished. There were some long stretches which seemed to go on forever but hey that's the desert.

It was nice to get into camp and not need to change into warm, dry clothes immediately and get some hot water bottle action happening (hot water in empty water bottles). Tonight's camp is tents but located in an abandoned village. It's still quite hot so everyone is seeking shade wherever they can find it. Last competitors today will probably get in around 8pm or so which means a long day for them especially with the long stage tomorrow.

Again thanks for comments and emails - unfortunately I am unable to see any of the photos as we write in draft and all comments get loaded at the same time when the team connects to the internet via satellite phone - but looking forward to checking out the photos when I have proper internet access. Also ill aim for a Jetstar photo but my legs currently do not lift very high so shall see what I can manage.

So tomorrow's long stage, I will team up with Marisa for moral support / buddy system to ensure we both remain hydrated and plenty of electrolytes are consumed to make sure we both finish the long stage. Also for sanity reasons too! So I will not post again until some time Friday but will fill you in on all the joys of the 80km! xx

Go joey!! You absolute star. You're that friend I tell people about when people start talking about truly amazing feats. Loving being able to read about how things are going (Mich pointed me in the right direction). Looking forward to more posts soon. Lots of love xoxo

Dear Jo glad you got to run downhill a bit today so you could save a little bit of energy. Which you'll need for the next huge stage. In some ways I can't even contemplate what running/shuffling that far entails. In our first week in Japan I walked over 100kms and that was good for me. For you to do close to that in a day is staggering. It's great to have a buddy who you can motivate and who can motivate you. A burden shared is always easier. It's great you've had some down time before the big assault tomorrow. Those who finish at 8.00pm must find it a hard turn around to start early again the following day. I'm so proud of you already for doing this you are amazing. Lots of love and my very best wishes. Sen xxx

Good luck Jo for the last push!! I'm sure you'll do great, and I'm so glad you've found a buddy to do the last 80km with. I'm also glad that it's finally stopped raining/snowing! Hope you get through the last stage with no issues and have a nice, long (well deserved!) rest at the end. I would be very impressed if you could do a star jump after all of this. Can't wait to hear more about the trip from you when you get back/get out of the desert! xxx

That Jetstar photo will come when you are finished; you will find a little in reserve. Pretty amazing country you are moving through and love some of the outfits - shoe covers especially. Good that you have a running buddy for the long stage, although all of the stages seem pretty long to us non runners! Nearly there, look forward to Skyping when you have finished. xxx

First thanks for everyone comments and emails - it is much appreciated and something I look forward to at the end of each day.

Next item on the agenda, my sleeping bag turned up.. one of the course sweepers picked it up so no dramas there.

So stage 3 now done. I want to say for a desert which supposedly doesn't get much rain, it definitely received its fair share today. Felt a lot better today - bit more road running today and of course some show tunes to keep me entertained in the last 15km - despite it raining for most of the day (FREE SHOWER) and ended up at camp like everyone else absolutely saturated so a quick change of clothes and into the sleeping bag to warm up. It may seem like another cold night on the cards unless we get moved somewhere else which is possible if conditions don't improve. Personally I would love the village we slept in last night as it was nice and toasty but lets see what happens.

Camp is an entertaining place - as you enter, you are greeted with a welcome drum and given some of your allocated water. Then everyone is hobbling around with sore muscles clutching recovery drinks or freeze dried meals..also bedtime is super early - and I thought mine was - but its totally acceptable to be in bed by 7pm!

So now halfway through the stages - a 40km tomorrow then the long 80km stage, recovery day then 15km on the last day. Tomorrow planning on taking it easy in preparation for the long stage and hopefully it will be warmer as well.

Hope everyone is well xx

Just going through the photos now, and there are some good action shots of you! Looks like you've been inventive and found a walking stick of some kind - and it looks like you're having a nice run, rather than completing multiple marathons! Well done lady xxx

Congratulations on making it to the half way mark and in such varying conditions. You're such a super woman! Good to hear you're also enjoying the non-running elements of the race too - hopefully taking some good sneaky snaps along the way. Good luck for the next stage xxxx Oh and ps, while I would love to have seen you as a burrito lady, I'm glad to hear the sleeping bag was picked up along the way..

Wonderful effort Jo! 8th female, very impressive! Glad the sleeping bag turned up.You must be seeing some amazing sights. Have had a look at the official photos and love the footwear in the shot of you beside the cooking pot. Show tunes are a great motivator. Pity the free shower wasn't a hot one! You are over halfway now. Nanna sends her love and encouragement too. She said you were 'born to run'. She is very proud of your efforts, as we all are. xxx

Hi Jo you sound very positive about the three stages that you have already completed. Good on you I'm full of admiration for your strength and resilience that you have developed. Going to bed at 7.00pm sounds good when you've run that far in a day. And the applause when you enter the camp should be long and sustained. Glad last night was toasty I hope you'll be as comfortable tonight. Sending you lots of love and good wishes. Love Sen xxx

I'm glad you're looking at the bright side of things (FREE SHOWER!)! Sounds like again another tough day, but you're in good spirits. I can totally understand that there aren't too many apres-marathon parties and everyone is keen to head to bed! Glad you're getting into your stride and have hit half way!! Lots of love xxx

Day 2 now completed. Briefing started at 730 just in time for a flurry of snow to start.

The first 10km was uphill...and more uphill, climbing up a snow covered mountain which was difficult and took time to ensure you had good footing otherwise a fall would have been inevitable. At the top which was the highest elevation of the course, we were greeted with a beautiful temple and gorgeous views overlooking what we had just climbed and further afield to the course we covered on day 1.

After reaching the top, we had a lovely section of downhill and a few river crossing with locals happy to assist in exchange for a photo or two. Since arriving, I have made many locals

Glad to hear that you won't be sleeping in a tent tonight! I've checked out some of the photos - I saw you in your sexy running gear talking next to a big pot (photo verification that you're doing well - you were even smiling and laughing!). Also glad to hear you survived the massive incline, and that you're enjoying some spectacular views. The race stats say you finished in top 9 for stage 2, that is ridiculous. Well done! xxx

Has the sleeping bag turned up yet? You can only imagine what the locals are thinking, watching this stream of people run by! It is good to be rewarded with beautiful views after such a difficult section. Hope Day 3 conditions are less extreme. A good massage and sleep sounds in order at the end of the day. Keep smiling. xx

Following a cold evening where our tents were battered by strong winds and heavy rain, today was a challenging day - while the distance wasn't too bad, the conditions were tough...altitude hit climbing up the first hill then post checkpoint 2, the sleet then a snow storm hit. It was freezing and miserable but pushed through to CP3 where I finally pulled out my gloves. The one bonus of the snow storm was that we didn't have a 1km ascent up sand dune due to lack of visibility at the top so we went around. at camp 2 - still cold (still at altitude -

Wow, super proud of you for pushing through those tough conditions! I hope they found your sleeping bag and you didn't have to sleep like a burrito in the emergency blanket. Good luck for Day 3 - I know you'll kill it xxx

What a tough day! I hope they find your sleeping bag soon (or get you a replacement!). I didn't realise you could come across those kinds of conditions in a desert, that's ridiculous. I hope you're keeping warm and otherwise well, sending you lots of love xxx

Relieved to hear that you coped with those conditions;sounds rather bleak to run in. Lets hope your sleeping bag arrives before the end of the race. I had read the day's reports and saw that all competitors made it through the day. There is such a range of ages - you are a quite a young one. Gramps has sent an email via our computer - unfortunately we couldn't open the links to show him pictures or read your blogs on his computer. It is probably too old! Keep warm and dry when you can. xxx

After much anticipation and preparation, I will be making my way to the start line of the Gobi March today. I arrived in Hami yesterday afternoon from Urumqi via a bullet train with some new pals I met en route. Checked in, grabbed some dinner and met my hotel roommate, Marisa, who is awesome

Hope today's weather is not as extreme as yesterday's. Did you miss the snow? I think the cold has come here - official first day of winter and the temperature has dropped dramatically, with wind chill as well. Probably nothing like what you are experiencing. Looking forward to your next update. xxx
