I finally made it out on a long run this weekend - a string of injury and lack of time / energy has kept training to an absolute minimum since Les Defis du Jubile in October of 2012. The injuries have consisted of cracked / squashed ribs on three occasions, and a persistent sore heel. That is a bit of a concern - the pain does not go away in spite of doing absolutely no running for february and march, and a good part of april. Today, a colleague of mine told me that after he had heel pain, he tore his achilles ligament and was convalescent for 3/4 year. On the upside, the spiked winter shoes I got are great and should make sure that I never slip on ice again, and the half marathon on saturday was laborious but not impossible. Today, I was able to run 12 km at lunch and I was quite happy with the pace. I will use labour day to attempt 30 km, then 30 km every weekend until a week before the race. I'll sprinkle in hill intervals in the weeks. That will conclude the training for Gobi 2013. It occurs to me that I might not be fit enough to run the whole thing. Well what is wrong with walking? Takes longer but you sweat less. No boring long hours in camp - just cook your (and the wife's) dinner and go to bed. It'll be fun!
