All over now and to home. We are back in the hotel now in Bole, having finished yesterday and had the celebratory evening meal. The race itself is already receding rapidly - you live in such an intense bubble that once back outside of it seems from a different world entirely. The finish was spectacular - 14.5 km up and down mountain meadows, clear blue sky- and final run down the hillside to lakeside finishing ringed with mountains. I saved my usual sprint for the finish line - and through for medals, cold beer and (brilliantly) the local equivalent of a Cornish pasty. The crack at the finish was good - the mixture of beer and adrenalin leading to some interesting dance moves from competitors and locals alike. It has been said (Kipling I think) that the first condition of understanding a foreign country is to smell it. On that basis Gobi 2013 is one of wild mountain herbs, dung smoke from the yurts, the pungent aroma of tent 14, and of course the sweet smell of success! It was a very different event. As predicted less of an ordeal by heat than others I have done, but some very tough terrain nonetheless. The support from the locals was what made the event for me- coming out to applaud and cheer us on - exemplified as per my previous blog of the young girls ceaseless chants as we climbed the mountain - you could still hear it echoing long after you passed. I won't insult your intelligence by claiming this is my last desert - in truth - who knows. Looking forward to getting back to HK and seeing shazz n will, and shortly thereafter in Uk and all folks there.
On a different point. - having seen the enormous road and building works out in this very remote corner of china I sense big bubble trouble - this is Japan 20 years ago and Spain 5 years ago - build it and they won't come. - you have been warned! The Chinese economic miracle may have some pretty shaking foundations.

I am sure you will all be aware by now that the long march was cut short for the racers, as such no need for me to go into the full details. It was the right decision, the course ascended to 9000ft mountain pass and the weather deteiorated raplidly...far too dangerous to carry on. I had made it to 56km ish by that stage , and so only another 20km to go , but that was over another mountain pass. Kinda bitter sweet , but i was relieved to be able to get into the warm. We hunkered down for a while in a local hut/shop...much entertained by the US competitor being rammed by a goat. The shop sold pepsi, chocolate, shoes, phones and goats so an eclectic mix. As for the race itself i was feeling ok- no real impact from the altitude and climb, and of couse spectacular mountain scenary...one of my abiding memories of this race will be how friendly and hospitable the locals have been -exemplfied by the yurt living old lady 7000 ft up the mountain who dashed inside to find some bread for the racers as they passed, or indeed the young girl on the same climb who shouted her support non stop , you could hear her minutes later , voice still echoing off the mountain pass. Once off the couse we were transported to a yurt village where we have stayed overnight , far more cosy than for the tents. On awaking this morning, you could see snow dusting the hills only 1000ft above camp, and were told that it had snowed at what would have been the later checkpoints ..so right decision indeed. Some desert! As i was on the main climb i remembered that in gobi 2011 on the same day it had been over 45 degs c..in the turpan depression , and this time it was going to get closer to zero. So today is a rest day in camp befor the final short stage tomorrow to the finish , and i kinda figure that 230km through this land is pretty much the same as 250km! Looking forward to that cold beer and seeing you all. Thanks Dr jim for the encouragement from Cambodia..and i hope the morning meetings have been enlivened, makes it all worthwhile. Thanks for all comments and thoughts from all. shazz , i reckon a bacon butty for tuesday breakfast? William , you can inform 5ren that i will be done by saturday am. Love and regs. Dg.
I will try and blog out final comments once we are complete.

Another 40+km kicked out and it went OK today. I am starting to wonder whether i should just do the second halves of each day – i start slow and gradually quicken as i go on. Today was another up in the hills and grasslands – cheered on greatly by a lot of puzzled locals – especially good as we came through a village near the end and many of the local children came out to high five. Also cheered up by a competitor ducking into a shop as he passed and handing me an ice lolly when he came out . Spent some of today on the course with some of the ladies from the tent – i learnt that Victoria is the Head of R+D for Mars – which led to a lot of chocolate related food fantasies. Lorens and Andy continue strong – albeait Andys legs looked b*****d. Now in camp and managed a quick wash in the local river – which is luxury. Jo came in first on todays leg – so all to play for on the long day. Jeepers – thats what next – just a quick 76km long day followed by the short last day. As such i may be offline for a while until the long day is done. Thanks to all who give comments to blogs and also all the email messages. Yes William i do agree that my chaffing chould be added to the topics in those “classes”. And on we go. Cheers to all.dg

still going - it was a spectacular day today - alpine scenary - suggest you read other peoples blogs whose powers of observation are greater than mine. A great big hill in the middle - which for us Hong KOngers was OK (we love hills) You will just need to look at the photos. As i plodded along today i was sure i could smell either parsley (or sage or thyme) and that (together with the local goats and cows) i began to fantasise about .....roast dinner. Came in under 7 hours today which was good for me - injuries holding together - the pinky toes are going to be gone by the end. Thanks to Josie for all the sports news - very useful. The sports news from here is that Jo is now in 2nd place for women - but i am sure she can get that back on the long day. part of todays trail covered a few chain link bridges just to add to the variety. Rob and Lara - sadly it wasnt Andy tripping me on day 1 - it was just my slowness - and he has been well ahead of me over the last 2 days - although he has managed to fall ovr today. I guess we must be close to half way now) - just keep plugging on. Best to All. dg.

Well done, Dg! By the time you read this message, you should already be chilling (hopefully not baking this time!) after completing the long day!! Huge congrats in advance - fingers crossed!
Did you manage to get a peek (not walk!) over to the Kazakhstan side?
Spotted pictures of you from RTP photos - looking cool! Maybe you should consider wearing a ginger wig too next time - for the convenience of your audience!!
Your overall ranking is #69 and Andy #49 after stage 4 . Not sure if this is interesting information at all as you are NOT the competitive kind...
Look forward to more blog pieces. Best of luck resting and crossing the finish line!

another one bashed out in 7hr 15 m ish i think. The terrain today was actually not too bad - but i thought best to keep a steady pace. Great views of the mountains to our right throughout the entire day - which form the border with K. Some excitment in the last 10 km as a thunderstorm hit - and rain came in horizontally - why i kept my raincoat at the bottom of the bag under all my food is anyones guess. once i had put the jacket on it worked its magic and the sun came back. Andy had a great run out today in just over 6 hr, and Jo remains in the lead of the ladies. Camp has made it all worthwhile - nestled at the foot or the mountains with a river alongside - the melt water is "refreshing" but great to have something approximating a proper wash. The cyber and medical tents today are both Yurts - which makes for a more comfortable blog. no significant new injuries today - although i am getting some chaffing in an unfortunate place - so i think i will self administer some tape to the region (not going to go to the doctors with that one) - not so sure how it will go in a few days when i try and remove the tape though - rrriipppp. Keep the sponsorships coming in - especially those who know Andy also. Love to S+W. Regards to all. Better go - a nice hilly one tommorrow. Cheers. dg

so one day done. i was not really "in the zone" for the first 20km - shaking off the last vestiges of the cold and also with a urgent desire to poo (yes i am sorry it is toilet humour again). Once i had lightened the load and added to the land mass of the Gobi then things got better in the next 22km. great scenary and an detour up a rocky valley with a carved Buddha at the top. think i came home in 7hr 20 ish - which is fine for me. 5 mins behind Andy and Sean from the tent - but they don't have a good pair of knees between them - Jo was first lady in! Many thanks to William and all his class mates in 5Ren (and teachers) for all the email messasges - they help speed me along. Many thanks Sharon for the Lions score - go Lions! lets hope they then go on to stuff the Oz. Chaps - please put those cold beers in the chiller cabinet - Andy is looking thirsty. The Japanese guy managed to race all today in his ginger wig - respect. I had better sign off - lots of people waiting to blog. Regards to all . Cheers dg

Well done David, hope day 2 has gone equally well. I am trying to persuade the yellow jersey to do madagascar with me next year. Do you think she could ever be persuaded to walk it rather than run? In continued awe of you both and in a perverse way wishing I was there too. PS. England 2, Brazil 2 in the football friendly - a wonder goal from Rooney to level the score. NZ won the ODI series. Wiggo has pulled out of the TdF. Still no news re Chelsea manager but it's immminent.

Good work Mr Camel. Shame you didn't have a quick spurt towards the finish line to overtake Reynolds - though I suspect he had the same thought and after walking together for 7hrs and 16mins he then tripped you up and stormed over the finish line! Trust you had a good day today and didn't need to add more to the organic compost situation of the Gobi. Keep us posted - on on!

we have made it at last to the first camp after all the endless formalities. So much for it being a colder race - it is now nearly 8pm and sunny and toasty. i managed to keep my pack weight to 8kg ish which is a result. Overlooking the camp i can see a few members of the PLA keeping an eye on us. The course area is not usually open to visitors and close to the border with Kazakhstan - so i am sure they will be keeping track on us. Had a look at the course notes - it is going to be a very hilly course which will add a lot to the times out there. The usual set of characters taking part - including a Japanese guy replete with ginger wig - he may regret that. i still have my cold but it is beginning to ease. some local musical entertainment at first camp - Uygher (spelling) mongol, kazakh etc - a local version of the Eurovision. i vote the Kazakh for douze points. I hope my next blog will be after an OK day 1 - it will be a warm and hilly marathon to kick off. Let the fun commence. Shazz and Will -i hope you enjoyed the Rugby game and the Lions won (what the score?) Cheers. D

Hope day 1 went well and that the hills / stones weren't as bad as expected. Wondering if Jo is doing the naked can can in your tent having taken pole position in the women's race. England being thrashed in the ODI. NZ got 359 and England now sitting at 254-8 with Trotty just got his 100. Martinez just confirmed as new chelsea manager.
Just kidding.

After a range of interesting flights we are here in Bole. All ok - importantly all bags and kit arrived. Only slight problems are that somewhere between waking up in Hong Kong on Thursday to being in Bole tonight I have a) developed a cold and b) gained a sore spot on the sole of my left foot - both of which are annoying. However 36 hours before the off so I should be able to shake both ok. Last flight up was 90% rtp competitors - the locals on the flight must have been puzzled by the sudden popularity of their town. This is likely the last blog until I am on the course..so lets get this thing going. No dog jokes today. Cheers

That is also my policy for this event - to go no faster than a dog could trot - and a very short-legged dog to boot. Perhaps a Dachshund.
That policy may be amended if i come across any local villager

Only 4 and a bit weeks to Gobi 2013 and for the 4th time in the last 4 years i head forth into the desert. I always need something to motivate me to get off my bum. Training going OK-ish - albeit the hot weather in Hong Kong seems to have been cancelled this year - at least the hills are still in place - all of which should help with the more mountainous Gobi Course this time around.
Once again i will be raising funds for the CSC Charity in Cambodia - as follows:
