The winter seems to want to stay longer and longer in Quebec. Looking back at the first few months since the landscape has been coloured white by Mother Nature, running outside has been a challenge. Cold, slippery, slushy, colder and even colder seem to have fill our discussions with other runners. Nature has won over the body many times. However, mental toughness has reached a higher level and we are looking at all the benefits that will be generated from this kind of training.
Three months before departure, 50-mile race next week with my teammates, another 50-mile race in April and we will be ready for Gobi.

First control point on the training calendar was Delirium 2013. 12-hour race in Bluffton, SC. On arrival, it was raining cats and dogs which was really bad news as I hate running under the rain (Guess why I like Desert!). Sun was up and shining the next two days which allowed the trail to dry.
The race started at 10:00 to finish at 22:00. Bad day at the office for me as my legs didn't want to go on after 10 hours. Logged in 70 km (43 miles) which was short of what I wanted to do but not to bad with only a few long runs of 25km.
The training pace will increase steadily from now on as other races are coming. One with my fellow team members in Kentucky in March and the Moab Desert in April both 50 mile races.
Gobi is getting closer. Spring is coming. This makes a big difference for those of us who are doing winter training.

Winter training has its challenges. Even more when you prefer outdoor to indoor training. In a span of 4 days, we faced -30C, -27C, +6C and now -20C.
We ran on hard slippery surfaces on the first two days, only to face a cold pool on the third and now an ice rink all over the place.
Training for a race in the Desert surely presents its challenges but it seems that we would be more ready for Antartica than Gobi.
