Gobi March (2013) blog posts from Sean Muffet

05 June 2013 02:04 am (GMT+10:00) Canberra, Melbourne, Sydney

The day started cold and wet, race started at 8am sharp as usual .

The 40.8ks raced today was through too many dry creek beds and the continual sharp descents took its toll.
First 20 was strong but the 20-30 downhill got passed by many racers again.

Tomorrow is going to hurt, basically racing 75ks uphill. Elevation gained is 2500m and elevation lost is 1500m, we are currently camping at 1500m and will be around 2600m tomorrow night.

Knees basically shot and some toenails are starting to lift, but 90 left. Am hoping to do it in around 15/16 hours?
Thanks again for all your support .

By the time you read this I am hoping you will be nearly finished - at least you can crawl the last bit if so required The kids are looking forward to you coming home and so am I - I am not nearly as good at homework and assignments as you. Let me know if you want me to start researching a good surgeon - sounds like you will be needing one on your return. Love from us all -including the cats

Okay Nug. Keep your head down and go for it! The pain must be something like white noise at this stage. Dad

Great work. You know what it takes to finish it. You can share Darren's Hard Medal from now on.

04 June 2013 02:54 am (GMT+10:00) Canberra, Melbourne, Sydney

A better day, some guy who quit chucked me his knee brace. And it worked.
We got the hills we we were waiting for today, some stages were so steep that a scramble was on.
Countryside is beautiful, looking out to the mountains we were in today as another huge storm rolls in.
All my gear got  soaked last night so had to run in my second top/pyjamas today, but have drid it all out since getting into camp today.

The Chinese army still are still onthe ridge with their binoculars firmly planted on the latrines?
Tomorrow brings Day 4, so we have covered 120ks to date, feet are good , hydration is too as I am not going fast enough.

Camp spirit is good. The leaders are all top athletes and I am backing Mahmut the Turkish Flash to take it.
Thanks for all your messages of support, it counts out here. Love you kids.

Sounds incredible, Sean. Photos are amazing. Look after those knees and toes, but in the spirit of healthy competition, win at all costs. Jacqui Nelson has clearly put in an order for some serious duty free goodies (crawler). Lisa xx

Just shifting in my seat to make a little more room for that extra bit of Choc cake. Am feeling a tad lazy now.... I blame 'the Cousin', not 'the cake'! AMAZING SEAN. So proud of you. Do what you must but take care of yourself. Lots of love! Txx

You are amazing!! The rest of us mere mortals couldn't do what you've achieved with meniscuses? to spare. Yay for you!! The kids say that if Naplan was this week they would answer the Question who is your Hero? as their Uncle Sean. Not Batman or God, like they did!!! Nice work. Lots of love, Annie

Sean you stubborn SOB. I've never laughed so hard and seen someone so happy to get a cup of coffee as you. Put your head down and get it done. If Darren got his ass across the line you can too mate!

03 June 2013 10:34 am (GMT+10:00) Canberra, Melbourne, Sydney

Decision was made at 5.00am this morning to continue.
It was a friendly day for knee problems as not too many  underlations , tomorrow will be really hard as the heavy climbing and dscending begins . Today was grass plains, grass plains and more grass plains covered in uneven rocks .

It was hot as hell till around 2pm before a spectacular storm blew in and the temperature would have dropped 20 degrees, to the extent it was cold. We were to close to home to heed their advice.
I have done well in the Over40s tent with some great company. Lots of laughs .

I have come close today to wonder why I do these, but it comes back evrytime to the challenge they present so to continue tomorrow with full patella brace and a seriously swollen knee while making the kidneys work overtime to process the anti-inflamms is all part of the deal.
Today I remained mid field , tomorrow I can only hope for the best.
Love to Ben, Tommy ,Liv and Jack.

Great work finishing off stage three and being so far up the order of merit - glad you're getting a laugh out of it. Have you given names to your knees? If so, are they male or female? Sahara will be a breeze for you, based on reading another of the other bloggers and the damage day one also did on his knees, that is compared to the forgiving sands he experienced in Africa.

Hey mate if there is one person who can get through to the end it is you - one step in front of the other man - doesn't matter how long it takes - db

matt mclellan

That's a huge effort mate. A few laughs in the tent at night is always good medicine. However you are a nut.

James Kinniburgh

Posted On: 04 Jun 2013 11:56 am

We all wonder why you do it to yourself? You are a nutter however without a little 250km dessert challenge where would you be? Sitting on a comfy couch sipping a coldie. Nope! Cutting tracks through every National Park on Sydney's north side is far more physically and mentally demanding. You are in your element. Mental + Physical challenge = Sean Nutter Muffet. Good Luck.

Robert Muffet

Nug, I wonder at the wisdom of pressing on with a seriously swollen knee. Things can only get worse and there is no loss of face in saying, enough, with a handicap like that. Best wishes from Dad.

Tommy Muffet

Go dad keep pushing. You can do .youve trained ages for this so keep going. Love Tommy

02 June 2013 01:49 am (GMT+10:00) Canberra, Melbourne, Sydney

Best intentions , top 30 after 20ks, then pop next to the left knee cap.
The  meniscus has been torn down side of left knee and basically I cannot walk/take weight(maybe 44 years old knees did it) on either the downhill or uphill.Flat is good but there is not much of that around here.
Borrowed a good samiratans walking poles to finish the 42.8 ks.
Bitterly disappointed to say the least, but this is the beauty of the multistage events, uncertainity.
Todays stage took its fair share of victims and joints. Beautiful part of the world, not the heat that was promised.
See what the meniscus feels like tomorrow morning but it looks like a reschedule of flights . Kristi Ill let you know .

NO!! Can you roll a towel/ jacket/ sleeping sheet tightly to about 2 inches diameter, put up behind knee and flex over it, if gives relief, hold it. It might gap knee enough to let meniscus settle back. Take care.

Robert Muffet

Nug, let common sense prevail. You know what is involved in these events and the long term damage that could result from pushing on. Discretion is the better part of valour! Leave it! Dad

Hit this dusty and hot camp around 5pm. Welcome to the desert , it didnt seem this hot in town.
We had some Mongol, Urqhur and Kazach entertainment which I couldnt make any sense off and
disappeared back into Tent 14 to tape my feet . I am looking two hundred yards to my left and have some of
the Chinese army looking back at us through binoculars? In case we wanted to stay here. They will shadow us for the 250ks making sure we do not take photos of official buildings or want to stay here. The course looks solid , lots of ups and down but mainly firm ground. Take care back home.

Hi SOSs, I managed to get everyone to all allocated sporting events - I even beat Warnie to rugby plus I remembered the snakes and oranges. Tom had me at rugby an hour before we needed to be there because he thought I would get lost!! The highlight of the whole weekend was the gorgeous Pauline turned up with a tray of lasagne. It is in the oven now and jack keeps asking when is it ready - it smells delicious!! Have a great day tomorrow - hope the body is feeling good after day one. Love you lots xxx

Congratulations on completing Day 1 Sean. Had a good look at the Gobi website and am relieved you're not in the Kobe Desert near Afghanistan! I've read that Gobi means "no trees and rocky", tough running terrain. Boys had great games against Joeys yesterday. Thinking of you and will follow your blogs. Soph & Sedgies x
