Gobi March (2012) blog posts from Kate Hogan

15 June 2012 05:55 am (GMT) Greenwich Mean Time: Dublin, Edinburgh, Lisbon, London

Gosh what a day! After my usual day three slump, and a good day on day 4, I was not holding out any hopes for yesterday. The idea for the long stage was just to get through it. It would have been nice to match the 14 hours in Atacama, but after very little sleep, only a few bites of breakfast and a 2 hour busride i was feeling pretty rubbish to start. Started out walking the first stage with mick and after we parted ways at the first checkpoint, just tried to keep up a good pace and keep some energy in reserve for the last couple of sections.

Seems the breaking news mentioned the dust storm and the rain - seriously, rain in the long stage is starting to become a trend! the terrain wasn't too bad, but over 75km is never easy. Anyway, at the point that I realised I was on for about 12.5 hours, I was astounded and so picked up the pace a bit, there was no way that I wasn't going to go as hard as I could. So i jogged as much as i could of the last half of the day and in the end came in at 11hr46min and that put me at 8th female and 45th overall that day. Not only that but thanks to the quirk of the whole of china being on beijing time, it was still light when i came in which was just fab.I am so, SO pleased. Was hoping to improve on my atacama time but never thought that i'd end up a top 50 finisher 2 days in a row. So I am happy and content and feel like I have give this race the best i could.

Fergus was feeling pretty crook last night, but he is fine now and typing away beside me so you can read his blog for the details, but he's absolutely fine and the docs are happy with him. He has been strong and fast throughout the whole race and i am in awe of him.

Mick had an awesome race and i am so proud of him. He's so strong both physically and mentally and he's had an absolutely brilliant race for his first go. have a feeling it won't be his last...

So that's it for now. will finish up with a round up in a couple of days once we are back in kashgar and we are not being hurried along to finish.

Huzzah!!

A truely outstanding achievement Kate. Well done indeed. What a great unicorn you have become. With all that champas, you won't feel the pains from the legs! Alan

KMMS ... congratulations on a well earned marvellous result! So very proud of you xxx Dad

Super effort Kate - must have been the base you built as a cunning runner in your school days in Canberra. Pass on congrats to Fergus as well.

Well done superwoman what an amazing effort. From reading your blog a lot of people would have given up after your first day, but not you. How good are you being in the top 10 woman. Enjoy that shower and real bed, you don't have much time to rest with your time table over the next couple of weeks. Talk to you soon Russ

Posted On: 16 Jun 2012 10:25 am

Bloody brilliant! :-) Will count the unicorns and you can decide if it will be a london or wedding delivery :-)

Darling Katy Mary, you little beauty. How good are you? I am so happy for you and proud of your achievement. I wonder if the promise of some Champers delivered to you courtesy of Unicorn Express had anything to do with it? You deserve some. I understand that there is pizza and beer awaiting you at the finish line, I imagine that your brother will be happy with that combination and indeed you will all enjoy the change from freeze dried food and water. Wow, I can't take it all in; you have done so well and it seems that the legs and knee didn't fold on you, well not that you told us, and you were able to keep pushing on. So, bring on the Antarctic, though I don't know about unicorns down there, but who knows! Have a great rest, enjoy the shower, bath, massage and sleeping in a bed. Will be in touch again. Enjoy the celebrations, you really and truly deserve them. Love you lots and here comes a BIG hug. Mum. xxxooo

Go Kate. The unicorn is cheering! What a great effort and it must be wonderful to be so near the end and doing so well! It is raining unicorns here this morning ( i.e multiple unicorns!) so a quiet indoorsy day is called for, something I guess you are well and truly ready for. All the best for a worthy finish. Love Auntie Kerry

13 June 2012 04:31 am (GMT) Greenwich Mean Time: Dublin, Edinburgh, Lisbon, London

So before I talk about today, a huge thank you to all who have sent emails and blog comments. I can't tell you the boost it gives to get back to camp shattered and tired and filthy and smelly (mmm can't believe not more of you want to do this :-)) and have a good laugh, and occasional cry and feel loved and cared for by everyone all over the world. So I can't answer each one individually but please know they are all treasured and thank you too for playing along at home and contributing to my champagne fund!

So today. Well, started out slowly, after yesterday living up to the usual day 3 slump and knowing today was going to be harder i wasn't planning on going out too fast. The hike up to heavens gate was slow and involved a fair bit of huffing and puffing so I wasn't concerned about placings or times today. Stage 2 was hard - lots of up and down mountains, which tired me out on the way up and scared me witless on the way down. I think at least twice i sat down pretty much paralysed with fear not sure how to proceed next. Stage 3 started out similalry and ended with a long section through a dry river bed. Agony on the feet and baking hot in the sun.

So imagine my surprise when i found out i was placed 55th at the 3rd checkpoint. Not sure how it happened, still thinking they must have made a mistake! Anyway like a horse headed for home, i got through the last stage as quick as I could and ended up coming in at 47th. Am absolutely stoked. I don't think i have ever come in under 50 in any stage in any race so tonight i will sleep happy.

The views and the scenery were spectacular today and really did make all the pain worthwhile. Mick came in about an hour and a half behind me i think and although he found it hard, he's in good spirits. Fergus had another awesome day, he is doing so well and is in good shape. The knee seems to be holding up and I have one blister (very minor) from today so generally feeling pretty good.

Tomorrow is the long day (75km) and we start out with a 2 hour bus ride which doesn't make anyone happy but we are all in the same boat. So there won't be a blog tomorrow but there will be the next day.

Gosh, there's so much more i want to type but as usual many waiting so will leave it there.

Until after the long day!

Cheers

Kate

Sounds like you're off to a great start, and congrats on finishing so high! I love reading your blog, it does make it sound like fun, awe inspiring and beautiful. Almost makes me want to take up running......almost..... I have fingers, toes and everything else crossed, that you don't have too many knee problems this time. This will be my one and only comment this time round (sorry!), as I'm off to sunny Turkey tomorrow for a fortnights holiday (yeah!). See you when you get back:-)

It has been a pleasure distraction to follow the three of you this week and as always, in awe of your determination and fortitude. I for one would be hallucinating and seeing random mythical fairies, goblins and unicorns all over the desert by now.

Kate: terrific!tremendous finish. Can't help wondering if you will relax on the final 12.5k, and get the make up sorted for the final photos, or if you will try to steal another minute or so to end up inside the top 50?? Frankly, it doesn't really matter. I'm sure the local band will be there at the finish line. I gather it's quite unusual, with all sorts of drums and flutes and a unique horn. Alan

What a finish KMMS! I just had to ring and tell my new best friend Ulysses Nico. Uly (as in “Truly” without the “T”) frequents Tony’s barbershop every couple of months as I do. It’s a social occasion where the worries of the world are swept up every 15 mins or so along with shorn locks, beard trimmings and the sparse harvest of a $15 No.2 clipper run in my case. Now while we often called him Uly, he’s generally referred to as Nic the GG. No, not Governor General, though he is most imposing. No, it is Nick the Great Greek… Anyway, he told me his life story …again but this time he included the fact that he had spent time in the British Navy in WWII, attaining the rank of Lt Cdr no less. He found himself on the dreaded North Sea convoys… He is now formally referred to as Lt Cdr U.Nico RN. His Aussi nick-name (boom boom) being obvious. So rather than wait until my next social networking opportunity at Tony’s I just had to call UNicoRN and tell him the good news. Now UNicoRN has mixed feelings about GenX but your demonstration of grit and determination over the past few days has revitalised his optimism for the younger generations. He is in awe of your focus and enduring determination and wishes he'd had people like you and Fergus and Mick when he was stuck on Crete 70 yrs ago before escaping into the Med where he floated quietly away on the inner tube of a tractor tyre. His demonstrated ability to survive at sea being of interest to the aforementioned British Naval authorities and no doubt a factor in his selection for North Sea duty... UNicoRN also has some fixed ideas about austerity measures and the like but matters of high finance generally involve a $2 tip for Tony, because the Italians are also in strife and being a proud Greek of the old school, UNicoRN also has a strong sense of history and quotes selectively from the published writings on the Greco-Roman wars …Tony often asks him if he was actually “there” to which UNicoRN always responds: “No…but I should have been!”. All this European argy bargy he says should be settled by the results of the Eurovision song contest…he probably has a point... Your magnificent efforts over the past week meet all Shackleton’s selection criteria when he chose his team for his epic journey South… you are worthy indeed to walk in theirs footsteps in November…I’m sure he would have applauded!

Darling girl, wonderful effort. Did the whiff of unicorn carrying Champers help to lift you along or the tears, fears and cheers of your supporters? Who cares? You made it. Not only made it but blitzed it in. I am just glad and happy and relieved that you are back in camp and hopefully resting and enjoying the scenery without having to run through it again. Much love and big hugs to Fergus and Mike and to you darling. This is so good to have you all back safe and sound ready for the final push tomorrow. Love you. Mum xxxooo

Congratulations Kathleen Mary Magoogenheim Squirt! Outstanding effort of unicorn proportions! Has been amazing to have been somewhere with proper internet coverage for a change so we could follow more closely all your moves and just soak up from the comfort of tropical queensland what has truly been an epic journey for you all.... I was even dreaming about being in Antarctica with you the other night...something about logistics and manning the sled being pulled by unicorn penguins on snowshoes...it got a little muddled there for a while.... I have explained to Rick that despite his parentage, Hogan genes are dominant and your nephew will not be presenting himself til he is sure that his auntie and uncles are well positioned (in a suitably comfortable bar) to celebrate his arrival properly...ie not sweating in isolation in a dry river bed with 75ml of water remaining in their bottles ;o) He is eagerly awaiting the arrival of the unicorn induced champagne (as is his mother) and we are all looking forward to seeing you in a little while for congratulations and cuddles all round. In other news, since I hid the spandex spierman outfit Rick has refrained from throwing himself off any more buildings so he should be just about ready for you and your brother to start throwing him some training tips when you get here .... he is moving about a little better on his crutches, and is particularly mobile on one...although when he does that he also dons a pirate voice and goes looking for a parrot... I read your stars today on a whiom and found the following - they werein the SMH so must be true... You have great determination today. If you're working on a tough project, you'll persevere until the end. How could you not? You're filled with grounded energy. Instinctively, you know how to draw from it steadily rather than using it up in fits and starts. Measured output takes you far. Be sure to pencil in time for relaxation, too. After the hard work you're putting in, you'll deserve a break! Couldn't have said it better myself.

Just saw the results!!!! 51st!!! You rock! Oh My Unicorn! You are incredible!!! I don't know when they published the results but I HAVE been worried all night so please slap your organizers. I'm so illogically ecstatic for all 3 of you (a wonderful feeling given that I've done little more than drink tea and coffee the whole time). Fergus getting in 10th, Mick in the top half on his first race! You guys have supergenes. Well Done. Well Done. Well Done. Unicorn Claps all around!!!

Just thought - don't be expecting me to do any of this shit for a hen do. XxX

Posted On: 14 Jun 2012 07:32 pm

Hi there cobbers! Sorry for not writing before, I've been checking up on you though ;). Glad to hear all is well with you, and well done on your placing - you must be pleased. No news from these parts, well, nothing compared to all your adventures. Next stop, Penguin town... Much love XxX

Posted On: 14 Jun 2012 07:20 pm

Go Kate!!! So in awe of you and your determination and stamina and mental & physical strength! When i'm suffering in the hot room I remind myself that 90 minutes of Bikram yoga is nothing compared to what you unbelievable unicorns are doing, and that keeps me going, so thanks for the motivation! Congrats to your younger bro on his first desert race, and to Fergus for his super running times. Sending you lots of light and unicorn love, and cheering loudly for you (even if it IS just in my head where only the unicorns can hear me). Stay the course and wishing you a blister-free last couple of days xoxoxo PS your father's eunuch-horn reference was a thing of beauty and should count for triple!

The prophets and seers sometimes wait for planets to align before making announcements ...we wait patiently for satellites to align to receive late breaking news! Am in Cairns,,,arrived shortly after midday. Was a wonderful carpet ride up the coast on a spectacularly clear day. 2 1/2 hrs in a B737-800 and one is still in the State of Queensland! Kez looks a million $$$. The little bloke is active, lining up but taking his time. He is also "tall" !!! With a bit of luck I'll get to meet him in a couple of days and pass on your expressions of love and affection:-)) What a week you have had. You are pacing yourself brilliantly and it's all seemingly holding together. Doesn't take much for it all to go South! Looking at the photos I could not help but wonder why no reports of twisted ankles/broken bones etc traversing what appears to be quite treacherous terrain. Your maturity in managing the emotional considerations of having your bro on the run , mindful of him but allowing him and yourself to expereiience the full spectrum of self sufficiency, physical and mental anguish so that you both grow to the max from it, is inspiring but I guess not all that unexpected! I see that also most evident generosity of spirit between Fergus and yourself. Given that you are in China I have been re reading Gavin Menzies' "1434" The great Chinese fleets which set sail in 1434 were all commanded by eunuchs. They used summon their crews with a blast on a large horn ...hence the eunuch-horn! It's true and probably the most original interpretation to date...I am certasin this small but most impressive contribution to the knowledge base will earn you a full case of methode champenoise! May your heart and feet be light for the completion of the long march, stay on track, take no notice of the sound of the eunuch horn...! xxx Dad

Go you litle beauty. See it's easy once you know how. You just keep going, and following those unicorns along the ridge tracks is obviously the way to go. You have been amazing to keep on pushing through and am very proud of your guts, stamina and bloody mindness. And you look good too- xx. There have been a few photos from this stage but I think there will be more tomorrow. The steepness of the slopes defy imagination and it wasn't until I saw the piccys that I almost sat down in fear. I saw some of the State of Origin game last night and in the corner closest to the Blues goal was a unicorn in a maroon jumper. That gave the NSW team such a fright they ran a bit faster and scored a goal. Can't trust those unicorns! Dad has gone up to Cairns today and I'll go up in a couple of days. I am going to take some leave, 3 weeks, and hope to be in Cairns when you go up to see Kez and meet and welcome the new addition. It was lovely to see you passing on a message to Mike over this difficult stage. I think we are all looking forward to see how the threesome fares. I wonder if the sandstorm that blew up was like the one in Atacama that you faced earlier in the year. Is a sandstorm generated by a mob of unicorns running backwards down the slopes? Can't trust those unicorns! Am very proud of our Katy Mary and holding you in love and prayer. Big hugs. Mum xxxooo

With reference to Seinfeld: These unicorns are making me thirsty... THESE unicorns are making me thirsty...These UNICORNS are making me thirsty... These unicorns are making ME thirsty... These unicorns are MAKING me thirsty...These unicorns are making me THIRSTY

Posted On: 14 Jun 2012 11:57 am

A sandstorm? Seriously? What else are they gonna throw at you? This is worse than the Hunger Games! (Which you might want to read, just for fun) Not sure how you are faring but all my thought are with you, Mick and Fergus.

Posted On: 14 Jun 2012 08:54 am

Kate: based on your stage 4 performance and blog, and on a bulletin of you going though a stage 5 and leaving a message for Mick, I'm pretty sure you are reading this having posted a great time on the last big day, and you are likly to be at or better than the top 1/3 of all starters. This is beginning to look professional...And it looks like you will have helped Mick to a top half finish at his very first attempt -- serious coaching implications here...? I also wonder how many competitors are required to register as a team...would the Hogan/Edwards outfit have won it? We're looking forward to borrowing your flat tomorrow. We are goping to give the Callaghans tea; on Saturday see a performance of "Posh", on Sunday see comedey impro with Paul Merton, and go to Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club on Monday. All stuff we might not have done had the late night train back to Essex have been required afterwards.I'm sure we'll also try one or two of the hundreds of restaurants on your doorstep. Fergus has warned us to replace any of your expensive liquor -- I think our tastes are cheaper than yours, so we'll probably acquire some alternatives locally and leave your stock alone! Anyway, very well done and see you soon! Alan I nearly forgot to share some breaking news you may be interested in. Cambridge scientists have come up with a new form of geneticalyy-modified wheat. They are going to market it as uni-corn....

Posted On: 14 Jun 2012 03:18 am

I feel tired reading of all those hills .... You certainly have let brother know who is boss and knowing your pliable, accommodating and defferential personality, you will hold back and let him catch up in the next stage (not). Clearly the unicorns are carrying you along and you need to remind nicole of her promise to buy you 7 litres of champagne per stage; I am sure that is what you said she would do and is certainly what you need. And being from blues territory i am feeling pretty good this morning. Keep on gritting those teeth Kate; down hill run now. regards, Alan

Posted On: 14 Jun 2012 01:19 am

I saw spectacular scenery, a spiderman and a leprachaun, but I just ain't seen no unicorn! Wondeful effort Kate. Glad to hear you are holding up so well - the champagne incentive makes it all worthwhile. In fact, I think the stork got waylaid by the unicorn and they are celebrating in advance - no word yet from the sunny north, but must be soon! Enjoy the big day and you will be on the homeward stretch. No great news here. The planned Percy St sit-in was cancelled as it was felt the street not big enough for expected crowds, Obama was coming for a spot of fishing at the dam but there were not enough boats for his security staff. The Fashion Shows will go ahead as planned with trackies and uggies sure to shine. Love to all and keep strong. Auntie Kerry

WOW in the top 10 woman how amazing is that. You are doing an unbelievable effort. Glad to hear the knee is not effecting you. It sounded like a torhurous day great to see that you cracked the 50 barrier on the hardeat day of the race. You have to feel pretty proud of that and know you have done it you can only move further and further up the ladder. I cant believe you are doing 75km in a day. Good luck.

Posted On: 14 Jun 2012 12:19 am

We're summoning troops of Unicorns to carry you through this stage of the race! (couldn't resist!) Once again, give me an A for Amazing - well done! Talking about amazing, I got my final result for my PGCE and yeah! I'm through! By the way, unicorns in emails don't count. So keep up the blog comments using the word unicorn, we're getting towards a few bottles already!

12 June 2012 04:53 am (GMT) Greenwich Mean Time: Dublin, Edinburgh, Lisbon, London

And now the other stuff.

Ok, it’s not that bad. After yesterday I was feeling pretty hopeful about today, we had been led to believe that today was going to be mostly track, but uphill all the way. Ummm…yeah. Not so much. The track that is, it WAS uphill.

Mick and I stayed together pretty much the whole way  today – occasionally one would move ahead for a while but we seemed to catch the other up and ended crossing the finish line together. No sibling rivalry here… I was just very grateful to see his face today and besides, his legs are so long that he only has to walk at his normal pace to keep up with me jogging J

Anyway, today started out fine, I was going to take it easy and finish in 6 hours. So stage 1 was a mixture of walking and running and was fine. Stage 2 was just difficult. Very rocky terrain, from pebbles up to rocks the size of your head that slipped and slid when you stepped on them and so it was very difficult to get into any kind of rhythm. So that was exhausting and then came stage 3 oh.my.god. The course notes and briefing mentioned tracks and a river bed. What they didn’t mention was the ravines that we had to go up and down – steep shale downhills and steep shale uphils. Ugh. Then the final stage was just a long slow uphill. It was hot, airless at times and just a continuous walk uphill for what ended up being 2 hours. There wasn’t even a slight downhill or even a flat to give the legs a break. Just two hours uphill with what will be the most uninspiring scenery on the whole course. Tedious.

Anyway, so the 6 hours easy became 7 hours of hard work which is a little worrying because tomorrow is going to be very tough. So tonight is all about stretching, eating and taking care of ourselves before tomorrow.

Temperatures on the course have been about 37 degrees apparently although the campsite tonight is freezing already with a very cold wind. It is an absolutely amazing place though (stage 4 being the exception) and neither words or indeed photos can do it justice, we are indeed privileged to be here.

So Mick and I had a tough day - forget struggle town, today we were moving through strugglemegalopolis. But he is strong and positive and at this point laughing out loud at your blog comments and emails so please do keep them coming. He is also giving the locals a good giggle with his pink hat and green zinc lips, and providing the volunteers a topic of conversation as they were all wondering if he was raising awareness of breast cancer. Clearly they were finding it hard to understand that he would just be wearing it because he liked it. I also won’t relay the jokes that started from the breast cancer awareness program he would soon be starting… I am sure your imaginations are fertile enough!

Well that’s it for today, as always people are waiting and I am freezing so going to seek comfort in my sleeping bag.

Huge thanks to you all for your amazing support

Cheers

Kate

Well done thus far Katie Mary - the Wellington Unicorns are beside themselves at how well you, Mick and Fergus are doing. The rest of the family are pretty pleased too!I told a very stately looking unicorn in the back yard, that he should shake a tail and match your deeds, but he is not into champagne - can you imagine that?? - and he thinks your dads comments about uni corn is quite clever enough to score twice!! No exciting news - the U2 concert was cancelled, the movie premier was moved to Dubbo, but the opera is coming next week. They are using a Unicorn as their logo for the upcoming season "Bubbles (and Unicorns) in the Air". Love to all the intrepid runners. Auntie Kerryxx

Well well! Day 4 and approaching Heaven's Gate! I guess at times it must feel like Heaven's Gate in the biblical sense ...that's undergraduate humour or "uni corn". Unicorn is also the trade name for a new breed of cereal developed in the labs at Gatton campus of Uni Qld...so I'm told. Now I mention this not to enable a certain lady with deep pockets to ply you and your's with Möet...or is that Moët..doesn't matter Im sure you will have plenty of time and willing company to assist in its consumption! Am on an early flight to Cairns tomorrow -the northern ensign is flying upside down -what with Ric unable to drive and Kez having difficuolty getting behind the wheel...well she can put the seat back but then her arms are too short.... she needs to teach the little bloke to drive?!! Looking forward to seeing how you fared today... thinking of you all. luv Dad

Kate: we just heard that a small part of today's race was deleted due to rain damage to the course. While this didn't save much, we gather that some competitors only heard about this when they were very tired indeed, and so it was very welcome. I'm sure you were glad! That should leave you with the feeling that the end is coming into view...and knowing you've finished this sort of thing twice before must give you more strength...It sounds hot out there during the day --London has been cold and rainy. Our garden is waterlogged, so I have an excuse not to cut the grass. You may already know that one of Fergus's unversity subjects was formal logic. This involved looking at the paradox that some words act as nouns, or names of things, and we can all use them happily in English when there is nothing that they actually refer to. (At least, we tend to assume that a unicorn is imaginary..). I'm sure he can speak for hours on the subject ( not that I recommend it on this one!). Alan

Hey Katy Mary, are you doings wonders or not? Miss Mousey would be very proud of you. You know those unicorns? There was another 1 today out the front of the house. He and his family of unicorns ie. MANY UNICORNS, were here to patch the road. Huh! What about the street, still cut in half, down the hill? Oh, that's for the other, lots of, unicorns. I can feel the bubbles from here. You sound as if you had to pull out your reserves yesterday and I imagine it would be the same today. What an experience you are having, and all the sights that are so unique. Your description of the loose shale made me think of the cliffs at Kiama (in a very miniscule way) of the way it slips and slides as you try to work your way across it. I am so happy that you seem to be able to keep going. I trust you can manage to continue and to avoid injury. All the unicorns here give you a roar of approval and waggle their horns - Go Katy!! Love you lots and carrying in my prayers over the hard parts. Big hugs. Love Mum xxoo

Posted On: 13 Jun 2012 03:38 am

pssss... Russell... work in a 'unicorn' somewhere in there. It's worth champagne. Honest! Kate you are as usual doing amazing. Remember that you are doing this because... why again ah? (said with a Malaysian accent) You guys need a comic to come to the camp though. Rocks? Ravines? Sand? Heat? Weird! I thought you expected something desert-like? ;-) Hopefully, what must come up must come down. ALthough they could have been really treacherous and driven you through the downhill part. It is quite addictive to follow all this from here!

Posted On: 13 Jun 2012 01:25 am

Great to see you doing so well. Sounds like Mick is having a good time to. You haven't mentioned your knee which is fantastic. Now we want to hear about you wearing the green Zinc and some crazy get ups. How good is Fergus still in the top ten!!! I hope he has a nice bath ready for you when you get to your 5 star accomodation.:) Good luck tomorrow.

11 June 2012 04:41 am (GMT) Greenwich Mean Time: Dublin, Edinburgh, Lisbon, London

Felt much better today so tried to crack on a little in the first stage – it’s easy to forget that 1km across road or trail is very very different to 1km over rocky hills, so the first half of the first stage took me 18 mins… and the second half took 40 mins. Insane.

Second stage was tough – lots and lots of valleys anywhere between 3 and 10 m high, but not dunes you could just run up and down, they were rocky, steep awful things that made your legs shake from adrenaline because of the fear of falling down one. Got through stage two in almost two hours, which was longer than I would have liked but still, the early stages are about conserving energy, not killing yourself everyday. Stage 3 started off nicely, flat riverbed that, rocks aside, gave the legs a bit of a break. We could then see the checkpoint in the far distance on what looked to be a nice green hill.

Instead it was across a b*strd of a hill with crappy rocks that dug into your feet or threatened to break your ankle. And the lovely green? Spindly spiky bushes that tore at your legs as you brushed past. Anyway, once that was over the final stage started on a tarmac road that wound its way uphill for about half an hour before a long descent toward camp. At first this was great, until my body reminded me that running downhill ain’t all that easy either and it was a long hot trot into camp. Happily, just towards the end, I caught up with Mick so we ran the last bit into camp together which was fab.

So it took me just over 6 hours today which was good, I was hoping for 6 but expecting 8, so im happy. And after finishing about 74th yesterday, mick and I came in at 56 and 57 I think so that was a nice boost that we both managed to keep up a pretty good pace. Both Mick and Fergus still looking strong and happy (always a good sign this early in the race!) and I can’t say enough how much I am loving havng them here.

Thanks for all the cheers, I am loving all your comments and a big thank you especially to Nicole who is sponsoring me 7ml of champagne (I thnk that was a typo I am sure she meant 70) for every blog that successfully uses the word ‘unicorn’ in a sentence. So please do write much and particularly about unicorns as 1. Champagne is rather lacking in my life at this point and I would most like that not to be the case, and 2. I will demand fulfillment of sponsorship in person so I get to share the moment with a wonderful friend and toast to you all for making that happen!

Kez, can’t tell you how much we are looking forward to hearing the news. Everyone in camp knows you’re having a baby so there’ll be much cheering when he finally arrives.

So that’s about it for today, there’s quite a line for the laptops so I’ll leave it there.

Until tomorrow,

Cheers

Kate

Glad your feeling better and back on top Kate. God knows the number of times I've felt nautious around Mick.. Sounds like quite the adventure and it has definitely convinced me to think about maybe doing it!! Good luck on day 3. Xx

Sounds like you're just getting into your stride! A champaigne stride. Because, as it happens, Fergus can take you shortly to see a unicorn in the flesh.By that I mean HMS Unicorn, one of the 6 oldest ships still floating (built 1824), docked in Dundee harbour and still used by the navy for training purposes and a bit of a museum (I kid you not!). Sounds like you guys have an unofficial crack at the team title for this event?? Alan

I knew that stubborness would overcome any issues you had, great to see your back to feeling good again. I didn't think you would let your brother get to far away from you, say hi to Mick me. How good is Fergus going, his times are amazing. Good luck today.

Funny thing you should talk about unicorns. I was looking out the window this morning at the site of the Brisbane City Council sponsored new pipe laying work, the same street all the yobbos walk up when they have spent some time at the local pubs. This road has been cut in two for 3 weeks as the pipe laying does something, just not sure what it is. Bit like a unicorn really, you see it there and then nothing happens! There have been some good photos posted over the last couple of stages so it does help to know you are really there and not just somewhere else chasing unicorns. The scenery certainly looks stunning but I imagine you are fairly concentrated on where your foot goes next. It's great you and Mike are able to cross paths and pal up for a time. The companionship on the road is a force to be reckoned with. Take care darling Katy Mary and I am very proud of your stamina and courage in keeping going. Looking forward to all the stories when you return. Big hugs and lots of love. Mum xx

Correct that was 7cl or 70ml - in other words every 10 comments = 1 bottle. So friends & family, get inventive! I'm liking Alan Graham! Depending on how I modify the unicorn rules later (and as I please) he may have won you either 1 or 3 glasses of champagne :-)

Posted On: 12 Jun 2012 02:50 am

Go unicorn go. Knowing you Kate you actually meant to say 700ml of champagne (= 1 bottle); from my memory that would be the smallest Kate sized unicorn serving you would ever consider. Scenery there looks quite something (I am sure you have plenty of time to admire it between unicorn curses). Am sure there is some sibling rivalry emerging as brother holds a small lead over sister - he had batter watch out! Alan

You little beauty! I sense the steely resolve which has become your hallmark!! I commented to Mick, it was gentlemanly of him to give you an 8 sec advantage (to make him feel good!)Why do I sense Im digging a hole here ':-))) You seem to really get into your stride around the 2-3rd stage. Some news: After 30 yrs the official verdict is that the dingo took Azaria Chamberlain...The NT Coroner broke down as she apologised to the parents and handed them a new death certificate. Perth was devastated by cyclonic winds on the weekend...worst damage in history to their power supplies. Alicia S had a baby boy in Nambour Hosp on 2 June! Our accountant who prides himself on running long distances is shaking his head in awe at your obsession with deserts! It's a shade after mid-day Tues so you are no doubt well into Stage 3... bon chance! xxx Dad

Where can I get me a champagne sponsorship deal? Top work Katy Mary - tell Mick that Rick has stepped up his training efforts by watching "Run, Fatboy, Run." He walked down the drive this morning and re-twisted his knee so has now resumed the position on the couch..something I hope the three of you are doing whilst soaking up some rays and enjoying the scenery. Love you all, looking forward to more. Good luck for the next stage xxx

10 June 2012 05:17 am (GMT) Greenwich Mean Time: Dublin, Edinburgh, Lisbon, London

I didn't get much sleep last night and had been very nauseous all night (probably a combination of car sickness from the bus ride in yesterday and lack of sleep) . I couldn't eat breakfast so knew that today was going to be a bit slow. Started off ok, we pretty much skipped most of the fisrt stage because the canyon we were supposed to go through was flooded, so the 2nd checkpoint was really the first checkpoint.

So I jogged about 2/3 of the first stage but had to stop a couple of times to retch, and by the second stage I was stopping every half an hour to, er, empty my stomach. overall i felt ok, but the retching really exhausted me so walked stages 2 and three. I had the pleasure of Mick's company for about half of the second stage but after the second time i was bent double by the side of the road i encouraged him to keep going at his  own pace rather than wait for me. I tried to pick my feet up a couple of times and jog, but it never lasted too long. So today was a bit longer than i was hoping for, but it's only the first day and there's no sense in wiping myself just yet...

But Mick looked great, and is in good spirits, and Fergus had a blinder coming in 5th. I am so proud of them both and we're all enjoying the time together. We are at a village tonight staying in a village house which is nice and cool and has carpets on the floor - a luxury for the two in our tent who didn't bring sleeping mats! It was great running into the village (forced myself to run the last 500m with another competitor) with an entourage of laughing children running beside us. Such fun.

I have eaten now and am keeping water down so am hopeful that tomorrow will be a bit more comfortable and the blog a bit more interesting.

Till then

cheers

kate

Hi Crazy lady Glad to hear your starting to feel better, I knew a stumach bug wouldn't stop you. But how is the knee holding up? Knowing you, even it was killing you, you wouldn't tell us. Apart from the health problems you have one reall issues you can't let your baby brother beat you. What a great job he is doing, if he is a stubbin as you he may finish right up there near the top. Your doing awesome with what your been going through

Posted On: 11 Jun 2012 01:06 pm

Way to go Katy Mary - top notch. Mick better watch himself for I fear it is he who will be seeing the back of you once you are back on form in the next stage! Hope you ended up rested and well after a cool and peaceful night in the house and that tomorrow is an easier trek. I an quite happy the little tacker hasn't arrived yet as I get to spend at least part of this week connected to the outside world, and able to keep keep up with how you are doing. Keep it up beautiful girl, thinking of you all xxx Kez

Go Kate! Goooh! Leave the short falls behind and show them the dust sis.... ;-)

Posted On: 11 Jun 2012 07:59 am

When you were a little one you had trouble with car sickness. If they had let you drive the bus all would have been well. Should I send a message to let the organizers know I give permission for you to drive? Big hug to you darling, I think you are doing marvellously well. Lots of love, Mum

Once you've fully gotten over the first stage and had a good sleep, my bet is you'll very gradually catch Mick up...We can see that Day 2 is over, but not yet seen the scores. You've done all the prep, so now to get the rewards! Alan

Posted On: 11 Jun 2012 06:26 am

well done on completing Stage 2! you're amazing. In solidarity I'm running 3.5km a day. Pathetic I know. I can't even say: 'yeah but... but... it's really really hot in Malaysia!' ;-) In all seriousness, one day my kids will be old enough to cook their own macaroni and cheese and you and I will NOT go running a desert but might go have some rock climbing fun somewhere - or maybe hike in Kenya - or both. But close enough to a decent hotel ;-) HUGS!!!

Top effort Kate. Sounds like a terrific place, regardless of the race. Hope that you feel better for stage 2.

I told you getting very drunk the night before was NOT a good idea! tss tss tss That's what you get from beliting out 'Dancing Queen' until 3am on the Karaoke system. Joking aside - hope the bug gets on its way fast and that today is better for you!

09 June 2012 04:44 am (GMT) Greenwich Mean Time: Dublin, Edinburgh, Lisbon, London

Arrived in camp a couple of hours ago, being greatly entertained by the local villagers singing, dancing, playing instruments and soon to be riding horses (not us, the villagers)

Am quite enjoying mick’s excitement and occasional bewilderment at where we are and what we are doing… middle of nowhere, mountains, rivers, synthesizers with JBL speakers, green carpet laid over rocks, people dancing, singing, cheering, soldiers in fatigues with truncheons (in case we get too noisy…?) and the knowledge that tomorrow we start running.

Hoping to sleep well tonight, there’s only 8 in our tent so we have an unprecedented  luxury of space which makes life a little more relaxed and the tent a little less smelly. Haven’t really got a plan for tomorrow, will take it easy as usual on day 1 and save some energy for days 4 and 5 which look like they are going to be the toughest days.

Not much else to report although guessing Mick’s blog may be somewhat more descriptive than mine. Will write again after day one tomorrow, in the meantime please keep sending the emails and blog comments!

Cheers

Hope by now you are a) happy that Day One went well and b)that you are now a pround aunty. Sounds like the baby is not anxious to enter the real world too quickly. Alan has sent all meaningful scores ie football to Fergus. Love to all three of you. We look forward to meeting Mick and we are looking out for the pink hat!

Posted On: 10 Jun 2012 01:07 pm

Well done today!!! And Fergus! 5th! Geez! Please read my comment on his blog for all the wonderful world news today ;-) Also, I left a comment on your previous blog while this one was down: A pledge! For every comment from your friends / family that successfully includes the word 'unicorn' in a sentence, I pledge 7ml of champagne ;-) Word! May the gods of little pain be with you during day 2. You are all barking mad, and I love that the world has mad people in them. May the madness spread, contage and stamp out mediocrity! (to contage = to make contagious - not to be confused with the more popular 'contaminate' which has typically negative connotations)

Well KateyM "on the road again"!! Glad to read you got in safely and in good time. Got the photo of "club 250" members in their T shirts: but am not sure how it arrived --I was half way between searching "Gobi" and opening facebook and it popped up! I've printed it -in colour! these are special times indeed for you three adventurers...just hoping Fergus did not overdo it today...spectacular time..so why did he run away so fast ...Mick's jokes...?!!!

Posted On: 10 Jun 2012 08:24 am

Good luck, good luck, good luck - not that you need it! I think you're mad, of course, but I wish you all the best. :) Looking forward to following along via your blog. Go kick a**! Wxx

Just to keep you three amigos in the loop: We are now into Day 2 of overtime and have nothing to report. It's like a game of test cricket...we're positioning the field and hoping for an outcome by the end of the week! Glad to hear you all so excited and enjoying the specatcle at the start... I hope Day 1 lived up to expectations and you're all feeling well and pumped for Day 2. Big love from us here in limbo central xxxx

08 June 2012 08:31 am (GMT) Greenwich Mean Time: Dublin, Edinburgh, Lisbon, London

I tried to write this before but after a frustrating 45 minutes of typing the blog didn't save so I am trying again...

Well we are finally here. Arrived last night, a little jetlagged but otherwise well.
I had a moment of sheer panic yesterday as we boarded the final flight from Urumqi to Kashgar. I had been so focussed on packing but was also so excited to see my brother Mick that I hadn;t really thought about the race itself. So when it suddenly hit that I was on the way to what will be another week of testing phyical and mental endurance (read: pain and suffering) I was feeling very nervous.

I also very nearly arrived without any waterbottles which would have been a little... awkward.. As Fergus and I were waiting to board the flight from London, a ranodm converasation about water on planes led to the realisation that my water bottles, cleaned and dried ready for the race, had in fact been neatly packed back in the cupboard.. not in my suitcase...

However, thanks to an iPhone and online shopping and order was placed as we were sitting on the tarmac waiting for pushback, and two new bottles were waiting for me when we checked into the hotel in Hong Kong 11 hours later. HUGE thanks to Eric and the Racing the Planet store for being so efficient!

So I have all my kit, we have checked in (managed to get my pack down to 7.8kg. Yay!) and am looking forward to getting to camp one tomorrow.

For spotting purposes, I am wearing white t-shirt, blue shorts and am number 73. Fergus also in white top and blue shorts with blue shoes and number 49, and Mick.. well Mick will be wearing a pink hat.

Nervousness aside I am looking forward to the race, but am also incredibly lucky I get to share the experience with Fergus and Mick. pain, heat, blisters, sunburn, sore muscles and lack of sleep aside, it's going to be a great week.
